MCCS Miramar Adventure Club Coordinator:

Erika Rogness

Erika is an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer In Service to America) that serves at Outdoor Outreach as the club coordinator with the MCCS Miramar Adventure Club. Originally from Michigan, Erika has lived in 5 different states/ 8 different cities and always ends up coming back to her favorite place - California. Through her varied work she realized she needed to join her love for the outdoors with her passion in working with youth. 1. What is your favorite outdoor sport?

Canyoneering and hiking are my top, but now that I’ve gotten to surf –it’s moving its way onto my list

2. What is your favorite place in San Diego? I thought the tide pools and cliffs at Cabrillo National Monument were gorgeous, but when I want to go to the beach, it’s always Coronado.

3. What have you learned working with OO? I enjoyed the class about knots/anchors for rock climbing, but the kids at the Youth & Teen Center teach me something new every day – no doubt!

4. Favorite trips with the MCCS Miramar

Adventure Club so far? Summer – Overnight surfing/camping trip at Camp Pendleton’s San Onofre Beach Fall – Mountain Biking in Los Penasquitos

5. Why do you participate in Outdoor Outreach/Adventure Club? Because I LOVE the outdoors and I like to have fun! I have enjoyed my time so much, I signed up for another year with this program (my 4

th year

with AmeriCorps total!)

Rose Canyon

Last month a group from the Youth and Teen

Center cleaned and planted in Rose Canyon with

Deborah Knight from Friends of Rose Canyon.

This activity is part of the Adventure Club’s

monthly stewardship project.

Teens: Alisha Jackson, Dennie Mae Dominguez,

Devin Roldan, Meia Cuyjet, Patrick Hanshew along

with staff members Michael Sales, Joann Hoxie,

volunteer Constance Canales, and club

coordinator, Erika Rogness, worked on the

canyon.

After school the teens gathered to learn about

invasive species, clean the area, and planted ten

willows and one oak tree (acorn). The teens are

excited to see the results from their beautification

actions at the end of the year.

Volunteer for Awesomeness!

Do you have a love for the outdoors? Are you looking for a way to relate to people in your on-base community? Do you

want or need volunteer hours?

The MCCS Miramar Adventure Club is always looking for new volunteers to get involved with us on our trips!

There are no required qualifications - training can be provided. The only requirements are that you are: enthusiastic, want to help others, and complete a livescan fingerprinting along with a volunteer orientation.

The remaining activities we have for the year are:

February – Snowboarding and Rose Canyon Restoration

March – Indoor Rock Climbing, Outdoor Rock Climbing, Rose Canyon Restoration

April – Overnight Camping/Rock Climbing Trip and Rose Canyon Restoration

May – Mountain Biking, Balboa Park, Beach Day, and Rose Canyon Restoration

June – Final Rose Canyon Project: Trails Day

Our Adventure Club meets weekly (Thursday after school) on base, so if you have a talent you would like to share with our club, feel free to contact us.

A Snow Shreddin' Sunday

Eleven teens from the Youth and Teen Center attended a Snowboarding trip at Snow

Valley on Sunday.

Snowboarding was a new experience for all the teens and when they fell, they got

right back up. Thanks for making this trip great!

took a chance; if you succeed, it’s because you grasped an opportunity.”
