Joy in Service

I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was Joy. (Rabindranath Tagor)

As we are celebrate the 50th anniversary of McClure United Church, these words of the poet keep coming to mind. To me they speak of the character and calling of our con-gregation. We take our name from Dr. Bob McClure, medical missionary and the first layperson to be Moderator of the United Church of Canada. Service to others, especial-ly those in greatest need, was his calling, passion and joy. Dr. Bob’s is a wonderful and challenging legacy for us to aspire to emulate, God being our helper. Jesus said that the greatest commandment is: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength; and, love your neighbour as yourself.” This was Dr. Bob’s way of witnessing to his faith; loving and serving God by loving and serving neighbours both near and far, in places like China, the Middle East, India, the Philippines, and Canada.

For fifty years, this congregation that bears the name McClure has sought to follow Jesus’ call and Dr. Bob’s example. We have an ongoing record of strong support to the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church, funding missions, justice work, chap-laincies, congregations and other ministries in Canada and abroad. Dating back to the 1970’s, and still today, McClure is very active in sponsoring and supporting dozens of refugees and their families. From the 1980’s onward, the dream of a multi-purpose church building within a broader McClure community that includes enriched housing for seniors, which became McClure Place and later Amy McClure House, was and is a wonderful reality. The countless hours of volunteer service that made this dream a real-ity and that sustains it to this day, has brought joy to our faith community and its many members, residents, and their families. The Stephen Ministry program that ran at McClure for many years, and that you can read more about in the pages of this News-letter, provided training in pastoral visiting and profound ministries of one-to-one pas-toral care. Hands-on service activities continue to be performed by those McClure peo-ple who serve coffee and visit people who drop-in at the Integrated Community Minis-try downtown; prepare and serve meals at the Lighthouse shelter; participate in reading programs with children in our community’s schools; deliver Friday lunches to shut-ins through Meals on Wheels; supported the building of a school and repairs to buildings serving people in remote villages of Nicaragua; and on and on.

Yes, there is much to celebrate from the past 50 years of McClure United Church lov-ing God and loving neighbour. More yet will be accomplished in the years to come, God willing and we ourselves participating. Let us continue to find our joy in service, as we each say our own “yes” to Christ’s call.

Calling All Smiles

We announced in February that we are going to have a New Photo Directory

in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary Celebration in October. Photo Di-

rectory committee members are Terry Cutler, Carolynn Drabble and Carol

Dean. This project is going very smoothly due to the involvement of many

willing and able volunteers. Thank You so much for you and the task you

carried out for the photo directory project. If you are interested in joining us

The photo directory helps connect names with faces and that connection

fosters friendship and strengthens our community.

There were 15 photo dates in February, March and April. Approximately 300 fami- lies

will have had their photos taken for the directory by May 1. We have booked Monday, May 30 and

Tuesday, May 31. These will be the last photo opportunities. In order to meet the October distri-

bution date we will NOT be able to offer any dates in September.

Each family who has their photo taken for the directory will receive a directory and a free 8x10 print.

Each family will have an opportunity to purchase photos. There is no obligation to purchase.

Annual General Meeting

McClure Place Association Inc. will hold their Annual General Meeting in the McClure Unit-

ed Church Auditorium on

**Sunday, May 29, 2016**

At 2:00 p.m.

At this meeting consideration will be given to committee reports, financial statements, approval

of changes to the articles of incorporation and bylaws, auditor’s report, appointment of the audi-

tor, and election of new directors.

Everyone is welcome.

McClure U.C. and Holy Spirit R.C. Preaching Exchange

McClure folks are invited to join in worship at Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Place) for any of the

services when Rev. Ron McConnell will be preaching: Sat. April 23rd at 5:00 p.m.; Sunday April

24th at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, and 7:00 p.m. Ron would love to see you there!

Two weeks later, on Sunday May 8th, Fr. Darryl Millette will be preaching at McClure United

Church at both our 9:15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services. Folks from Holy Spirit will be joining him. Let’s

make our friends and Covenant partners feel welcome, visiting with them before and after worship and

over coffee time.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

What is the prayer Shawl Ministry? It is providing pastoral care to the McClure Faith Community with

the distribution of a shawl to people who are experiencing adversity and stress in their lives. If you

know of someone who would benefit by being wrapped up in the loving prayers, warmth and comfort of a

shawl – please let the ministerial staff know.

Shawls are given to the new residents of Amy McClure House if they want one.

This ministry is made possible by the generous gift of knitters who create shawls. At one time all the

shawls were made from Bernat Harmony Wool; in soft pastel colors in a set pattern. A prayer is prayed

while the shawls are knit. We no longer can get the wool; shawls

are created using soft warm pastel colors.

Congregational Care would like to know who the knitters are.

Life in McClure Place offers many opportuni-

ties and choices. This month has been particu-

larly full of them!

Keeping active is a great benefit to us all. We

have opportunities and encouragement to do

just that when we participate in the daily “In

Motion” program, the Moon Walk project, Car-

pet Bowling, and the newly acquired Curling

Game.

After our April Potluck Supper on April 5 we

were treated to the lively music of “Just Us”.

Recently we had a presentation by a Massage

Therapist who is portable and qualified to pro-

vide beneficial therapy in our homes to on an

appointment basis. This is especially helpful to

those with mobility issues.

Another motivational presentation included

tips about de-cluttering our living spaces. Now

we just have to do it! The next day we were

given a review of the procedures required in

the event of a fire in McClure Place.

Being informed about our wider community is

also available. Just days before the April 4

Provincial Election, our activity coordinator

arranged an All Candidates Forum, complete

with prepared questions for comment. On April

12, Kitty Murphy gave a presentation on what

it was like working in the North with the Ca-

nadian Coast Guard. On April 13, we were in-

vited to wear pink to show our solidarity

against all forms of bullying. Another connec-

tion with the wider community is with the pub-

lic library Book Exchange program. We just

received a new selection of books for our read-

ing pleasure, so just have to go down to the

dining room to sign out a book. Information

offerings are also diverse.

This month, Jack Millar’s slide presentation

was on his travels to Namibia. It was most in-

formative. For this month we watched the in-

spirational movie “The Intern”.

We have evidence that spring is here. Our gar-

deners have been bringing geraniums out of

winter storage, placing them in the link, and

letting us witness the miracle of new fresh

growth. It reminds us to be full of gratitude

and hope.

McClure Men’s Gathering

Our next gathering is Saturday May 8th, 8:00 – 9:30 a.m., in the Craft Room. This is a group of men

who get together, once a month, for an hour and a half. We enjoy a light

breakfast, get to know some other guys in our church family a bit better,

and discover God’s Spirit through friends in faith. Why not drop by and

check us out? There’ll be plenty to eat and good friends to meet and greet.

This will be our last get together until September. So, hope to see you on

Saturday May 28th at 8:00 a.m.! For more info call Ron (373-1753)

For some larger picture memories of this decade I

consulted my parents. So this first bit we can thank

Bruce & Marg Richards. In my defense I was 8 years

old when this decade started. :)

In just a few years after the church was built, there

was tremendous growth of our congregation. That led

to large, and sometimes split Sunday school classes

(Mom was the co-ordinator of church school for a

number of years), the move to 2 services

on Sunday mornings, and the requirement to expand

the building not too many years after it was built (the

expansion came in 2004).

The beginning or continuation of many large fund-

raisers (mostly for outreach initiatives) including huge

community garage sales each spring, dinner theatres,

and an ice cream booth annually at the Saskatoon Ex-

hibition. In spite of the size of these initiatives, they

were planned, organized and staffed by many hun-

dreds of McClure volunteers!

My earliest memory of this decade was one that

caught me by surprise. I can't remember exactly

where I was, maybe outside my house or in Lakeridge

park; but what I vividly remember was Dale Morri-

son, the minister of the church, coming up to me and

inviting me to join him for a slurpee at 7-11. We

needed one more though, another member of the Jr.

Youth Group; Kevin Palendat. I knew where Kevin

usually hung out, and we drove around in Dale's car to

Kevin's hangouts, talking all the way. When we

found Kevin skateboarding with his friends, he joined

us in a conversation. Dale wanted to know how we

were doing in the church, and about school and our

lives. I have recounted this moment numerous times

in my life. It was the first time a minister went out of

his way to talk to me specifically. It made a huge im-

pression on me, and as I grew older I realized the pos-

itive influence a minister can have on people in the

community, just with random acts of kindness. Look-

ing back on where I am now, it is all quite surreal, and

a little ironic. Thanks Dale! I guess I still owe you a

slurpee. :)

Anyone else remember the portables? We had senior

youth group in that monstrosity. I cannot emphasize

how cold they were during winter!! You had to go

outside to get into them too, they weren't connected.

Kent Mohn was our Sr. Youth Leader, and Darren

Woof our Jr. Youth Leader. I remember sitting on the

old couches and chairs. Dani, Leah, Kevin, and my-

self. I find it a wonderful testament to those memo-

ries that I am still friends and in contact with all of

them. Kent was a wonderful leader. I remember at

one point he took us to a variety of different faith ex-

pressions; I remember going to Elim Tabernacle and a

Mosque in I think Lawson Heights. For someone like

me who grew up exclusively in McClure United

Church this was a big deal.

Another thing I remember is the Dinner Theatres from

this time. My mom used to be a bunch of these. The

first one I saw her in was Wolf at the Door. The one I

mostly remember though is Buckshot and Blossoms.

She had to sing some ridiculous, high pitched song in

that play, it was quite memorable.

A tradition that is from McClure that I hope goes on

forever is the Easter Vigil and Sunrise Service at

Wildwood Hill. I have lots of memories of staying up

all night, contemplative worships, playing games and

laughing. The 2:00am hockey game was always my

favorite part, and just what I needed to get over that 2

- 4:00am drowsy period. I remember one year when

for some reason we had one of those huge old CD

players on the stage at 3rd Avenue United. Me and

Matt Galbraith sat there catching up and playing songs

for hours. I hadn't seen him for a while; Easter Vigil

has always been a service where the former youth

might just drop by and mingle with the current ones.

In the spring of 1993 a few McClure Place resi-

dents came home from being down south with news

of the Stephen Ministry program. Then Dale Mor-

rison introduced McClure congregation to the pos-

sibility of supporting the ministry staff in providing

pastoral care to our growing congregation through

Stephen Ministry.

Stephen Ministry is a pastoral care program ( a

one-to-one lay caring ministry) where lay people

are taught to give pastoral care to others in the

congregation who are in need of support. Stephen

Ministry congregations equip and empower lay

caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide

high-quality, confidential, Christian care to people

who are struggling through a difficult time in life—

experiencing grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or ter-

minal illness, or some other life crisis.

In the fall of 1993 Dale Morrison, Joan Brown,

Sheila Krueger and Sandi Hamp spent two weeks

in Edmonton taking the Stephen Leader Course

and then came home and set up the program at

McClure.

In the first year twenty eight people took the 50

hours of training, equivalent to a university semes-

ter class and committed themselves to serving the

pastoral care program for two years. It was be-

cause of this extensive training that congregation

members were very accepting of their ability to

provide pastoral care.

Following the training the entire group met twice a

month for ongoing support and training. This was

a very valuable part of the program as we got to

know each other very well, we supported each oth-

er and received some continuing education. For

example in the year 2000 the education events in-

cluded Aldyne Adam on Alzheimer's Disease, Tom

Powell on Healing, Dale Morrison and Ruth

Mireau on Change and Retirement.

In the following years the congregation supported

the training of new Stephen Leaders to train the

lay people of McClure. These included Jack Millar,

Rose Brodsky, Sue Trenchard, Ted Trenchard,

Kent Mohn, Ron McConnell, Terry Cutler, Cheryl

Thompson, , Muriel Baxter, Marilyn Ferguson, Col-

leen Kinahan, Eleanor Birtles, Roger Birtles and

Laura Fouhse.

Over the years there were about 75 Stephen Min-

isters trained and for a few years there were 42-46

people participating in the ministry at one time.

In 2003, Stephen Ministers were trained to provide

coverage for Rev. Tom Powell of the Northern Sas-

katchewan Hospital Chaplaincy during his sabbati-

cal leave. And in subsequent years they assumed

responsibility for the Amy McClure House Volun-

teers, the Grief Phoning Ministry, the Newcomers

Committee and Visiting People.

Joan Brown maintained the program through all

the changes of personnel (both ministers and lay

people) until 2006 at which time Laura Fouhse con-

tinued that work. Eventually the number of peo-

ple interested in becoming Stephen Ministers

dwindled. The program came to an end in 2010

with some of the original Stephen Ministers still

remaining part of the care giving team.

The training enabled individuals to learn about in-

teractions with others, to learn about themselves

and to learn more about our Christian faith and to

nurture and encourage ways to live out our faith in

everyday life.

The people who participated in Stephen Ministry

took their knowledge into their workplace, their

homes and their schools and reported that their

relationships were enhanced by their new listening

and caring skills. For me it was the catalyst that

brought my call to ministry alive and I am forever

grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this pas-

toral care program.

McClure United Church, an outreach congrega-

tion, celebrates its 50th anniversary with a one-

day event on Saturday, October 29, 2016.

We will learn more about the work of the Truth

and Reconciliation Commission and how we can

participate, individually and collectively in

responding positively to its recommendations and

calls to action.

So, please, save this date, Saturday, October 29,

2016. More information to follow.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with great joy and deep thanksgiving to God for you, our friends and Covenant Partners, that we at

McClure United Church wish you every blessing as you celebrate your 50th anniversary on May 1, 2016.

Both of our churches began in 1966, Holy Spirit Parish worshipping at Holy Cross Collegiate and

McClure United Church worshipping at Walter Murray Collegiate. At McClure United Church’s inaugu-

ral service on October 30, 1966, Holy Spirit’s then parish priest, Rev. Fr. Bernard Dunn, proclaimed the

Gospel reading John 15:1-12. From that time onward our two congregations have been close companions

in prayer and in discipleship to Jesus Christ. An important milestone in this shared journey of faith was

the official signing of our formal Covenant together on March 5, 2000. It remains a joy and blessing to

live together with you into the deeper meaning of this Covenant partnership, as we seek to more faith-

fully witness to the unity that is Christ’s will and the Spirit’s gift to the Church.

As you celebrate the past 50 years of ministry and mission as Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Parish, we at

McClure United Church share in your joy and we hold you in our prayers. As you take up the joys and

challenges of ministry and mission in the years to come, we will continue to count it as blessing this gift

of Christian love and fellowship that we share; and we ask that Christ will continue to bless and

strengthen you as you witness to God’s love in and for the world.

Dear McClure Friends,

With your love and encouragement, I answered a call to study for ordained ministry four years ago. The

time at St. Andrew’s College passed quickly and following convocation on May 6, I will be ordained as

part of the closing service for the 2016 Saskatchewan Conference annual meeting. Anyone is welcome to

attend this service, but I would like to extend a special invitation to you, my church family, to join me in

Regina to mark this occasion:

Sunday June 5 at 10:00 am at Westminster United Church, Regina SK

Following convocation I will begin in ministry in Delisle and Vanscoy pastoral charge; I look forward to

returning to River Bend Presbytery and serving the church in various ways. It is an exciting time to be

a part of the United Church and I am looking forward to being involved in whatever God is up to!

Sunday May 22nd , our first one service only at 10 am be prepared to be blessed by the

“Heritage Christian Academy Choir” made up of seventy young people under the direction

of Torri Airhart who is the son in law of McClure ‘s Linda and Doug Cooney. This is an

award winning choir which tours both internationally and nationally once a year. How fortunate we are

to be able to receive this gift of music; you may want to delay opening up the cottage for a week!
