    PARTNERS WITH

MID-CITIES CARE CORPS FOR A DAY OF CARING

The Davis Memorial United Methodist Church of North Richland Hills teamed with Mid-Cities CareCorps (MCCC) and the Helping Hands program for their Day of Caring. Rev. Linda Holbrook was looking

for opportunities for members of Davis Memorial to reach out into the community. The result was a Day ofCaring on April 25th that replaced scheduled Sunday worship services. Members were encouraged to join in

the community outreach experiences and the rewards of assisting neighbors throughout the community. The day started with a hearty breakfast served up for all participants. Deb, a member, was the project

coordinator and interface with MCCC. The membership tackled twelve MCCC client service order requests. The variety of projects completed was impressive and appreciated.

Thanks to the members of Davis Memorial United Methodist for teaming with MCCC and making a pos-

    itive imprint in our community.

MCCC HONORS OUR CARING VOLUNTEERS AT LUNCHEON:

Mid-Cities Care Corps Board of Directors and Staff honored our outstanding and caring

volunteers with an Italian Pasta luncheon catered by Ti Amos of Hurst on April 29, 2010.Mid-Cities Care Corps could not exist

    without the compassionate and reliable

    volunteers that provide such wonderful

services to our Senior Neighbors. This

year in addition to our volunteers we had

two of our Senior Neighbors join us.

Mary and Pat are part of the first TLC

    Phone Tree and had never met before;

they were thrilled to put a face with thevoice on the phone.

Each year MCCC presents the M.A.R.I. Awards (Making AReal Impact) to recognize excep-

tional volunteers. This year we also introduced a new recognition: The 600 Mile Club, for those

drivers who volunteer for MCCC and accumulate this impressive annual achievement. We also

acknowledged those volunteers who have served five and ten years.

The Ruby Award (Symbolizing Energy and Action) was given to two

long standing volunteers: Jean Ricketts, our Monday scheduler and

Leonard Kiker. Jean has been the voice on Monday for over 6 years.

She often volunteers to come in on one of her off days as well if itlooks like we are running a little behind. Jean also helps out with the

Health Fairs that MCCC attends. The only thing that has kept her out

of the office has been a broken leg and she recovered from that and

    returned right back into action!

Leonard Kiker has been driving with MCCC for 12 years, ever since his retirement from

American Airlines. He knew about MCCC because MCCC had driven his mother to various

appointments over the years. He knew firsthand the important mission MCCC performed in

community. Leonard often tackles the challenging drives always with energy and enthusiasm.

The Emerald Award (Symbolizing Healing, Hope & Optimism)

went to Christina Bartha. Christina called United Way-Northeast

hoping to volunteer with the elderly and was referred to MCCC.

What a great match! Christina has been instrumental in establishing

the TLC Phone Tree (Talking-Loving-Communicating) and getting this

exciting new program up and running. Christinas passion for serving

our Senior Neighbors led her to pursue a degree in Gerontology

from the University of North Texas which in turn has led to a full-

Mary & Pat meet for the first time as a result of TLC Phone Tree

VOLUNTEERS ARE THE CARING SPIRIT OF THE MCCC MISSION

time position with the Area Agency on Aging. She now has limited time to volunteer with

MCCC, but we truly appreciate her caring spirit and the get-it-done attitude she shares withMCCC and the TLC Phone Tree program.

The Sapphire Award (Symbolizing Justice & Humanity) traditionally goes to a single group,

but the recipient of this years award had multiple groups in multiple age brackets! COMPASS

Christian Church and their Mission and Outreach

Ministry participated in multiple Work Days for

Mid-Cities Care Corps. The children, youth, and young

adults at COMPASS truly bridged the generations as

they performed needed outdoor tasks for our Senior

Neighbors in both the fall and spring. They raked, mowed, cleaned out flower beds, planted flowers,

trimmed shrubs, and painted a house! Bill Groom,

Minister of Mission and Outreach accepted the award

on behalf of COMPASS Christian Church.

The Board of Directors would like to thank Anne Agee, Office Manager and Duane Buuck,

Executive Director for co-coordinating this event. The food was delicious, the event was fes-

tive, and the contagious spirit of volunteerism was evident.

Mid-Cities Care Corps is blessed to have a group of caring individuals committed to working

together to meet the needs of our Senior Neighbors. In 2009 MCCC volunteers drove 24,000plus miles and completed 1,375 drives for seniors in the community. MCCC has added over 100

new Senior Neighbors to our database in the past year. As the population of Senior Neighbors

continues to grow so does our need for volunteer drivers and other caring volunteers. Our best

volunteer recruiters are existing volunteers. Please be an ambassador for MCCC in the

community and tell your friends and neighbors about volunteerism with MCCC as we continue to

address the growing needs at Mid-Cities Care Corps to preserve the independence of Senior

    Neighbors in Northeast Tarrant County.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: PETER HATCHWe always like to have volunteers stop by the office and have a cup of

coffee and chat with us about their adventures, whether an unusual ride,

competed project, or life experience. One day Peter stopped by to chat abouta home repair project that he had just finished and went on to tell us abouthis adventures as a home renovation specialist. Turns out that Peter is ourcelebrity volunteer. He appeared on one of the first seasons of This OldHouse with Bob Vila, installing some unique wall coverings that he had im-ported from Italy. At the time he was running a decorating business in Or-egon. His exposure from This Old House led to his being on the cover ofPopular Mechanics magazine which led to guest appearances on another PBSshow Hometime. We appreciate his going the extra mile as a HelpingHands Project Leader.

Last winter Peter was instrumental in coordinating the power restorationat the home of one of MCCCs senior neighbors after the snow storm. More recently Peter came to the rescue

again. One of our senior neighbors had fallen during the evening and paramedics had to break down the doorto get to her. Encouraged by her visiting nurse to go to the hospital the next day for additional checks, she re-fused to leave for the hospital until her home was secure. MCCC was called at 11:15 A.M. and Peter wason site by noon working to make the repairs needed to insure that the home was secure. Only when she wasconvinced that her home was secure did our Senior Neighbor agree to go to the hospital for needed tests andobservation.

Peter claims he is retired. Peter is a valued volunteer not only at MCCC but as a volunteer driver for Mealson Wheels. In his spare time he likes to play golf. Peter, thanks for being a member of the MCCC volunteerteam!

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES:MCCC & S.A.L.T. TEAM UP FOR A VIDEO HISTORY

Roger participated in a Helping Hands work daywith his sons church youth group. The experiencecaused him to reflect on his personal family heritage.I wish I had the experiences of my father, a physicianin the Northeast who is no longer with us, to sharewith my children. Roger indicated he enjoys makinghome videos and has some equipment. While empha-sizing his amateur status, Roger volunteered to capturethe memories of a senior for MCCC.

The result, MCCC teamed up with S.A.L.T. (Seniors

And Law Enforcement Together) to capture the lifeand times of S.A.L.T. founder Robert Bryson of Hurst.Oh, the memories Roger captured of Bob and his wifeDonna! ... early life memories, family trips throughoutthe world, and background on Bobs motivation tostart the S.A.L.T. chapter in Tarrant County.

The achievements of S.A.L.T. are impressive as theannual conference held in March revealed with over500 attendees. S.A.L.T. is a non-profit that teams withlocal community law enforcement agencies to educateand inform seniors throughout in the community.

Thanks to Roger for his initiative resulting from a

volunteer experience with MCCC. Not only did hetouch a senior as a volunteer but he also wastouched and did something about it. The video iscurrently being edited and certain to be a valuedcollection for Bobs family as well as the commu-nity Bob has made an imprint on.

Jim Newlon Joins MCCC Board of DirectorsWe welcome Jim Newlon to the Mid-Cities Care Corps Board of

Directors. Jim is a financial advisor with his Northwest Mutual Life In-

surance Company agency. Jim and his wife Kay Lynn are active mem-bers of St Philip Presbyterian Church and active supporters of MCCC.

The Board of Directors has the responsibility, opportunity, and priv-ilege to guide and foster the ongoing legacy of MCCC. This role alsoprovides a unique insight into the rewards of serving senior neighborsin our community. We are excited to welcome the communityconsciousness, business experience, and spirited energy of Jim to theBoard of Directors.

    BLESSINGS SHAREDDear Friends,

Thank you all so verymuch for finding the lovinglady Bobbie who took me to

my doctors yesterday. Wehad a very amiable visit and a

lot of laughs as we drove. Ihad no words to adequatelythank her, one lovely lady. Thanks so much again.

    B. MC

    Dear MCCC,Thank you so much

for your assistance inpainting our home. My

husband & I appreciatethe help that the SABRE

group provided. Youare indeed faithfulservants. Thank youfor being so thoughtful.

    SK & BK

Thanks to those sweet, smiling, young peoplefrom Davis Methodist forthe very professional job

they did on my lawn. Itwas the first time I asked

for help & I feel soblessed. There are notenough words to expressmy gratitude.

    FT

The call I took from Ms. Odie one Monday morning captured the mission of Mid-Cities Care Corps.

Ms. Odie called to express her appreciation for the MCCC volunteers that had tended to her yard on a

Helping Hands work day that Saturday. I had never spoken before with Ms. Odie, a MCCC client, but thetone of her voice communicated her spunky spirit and genuine gratitude.

Ms. Odie offered I appreciate the efforts of the kids that tended to my yard on Saturday. The kids did a greatjob and worked hard! We began with prayer. The adult leaders were such nice individuals. The flowers they planted in

my front flowerbed are beautiful. And I was able to give all the kids a hug at the end of the day.The kids were part of the thirty-two 5th & 6th graders from COMPASS Church that volunteered for a

MCCC Helping Hands work day. The spirit and energy of these kids were evident as they gathered,

organized, and headed out to tackle four MCCC Service Orders. (Picture page 3)

Then Ms. Odie offered the following observation Im oohing and ahhing at everything they did. InJuly I will be 102 years old, and that was one of the best days in my life I can remember! While giving,

can you imagine the imprint Ms. Odie made with these young MCCC volunteers!

This is just one volunteer story that illustrations the rewards for volunteers tending to the mission ofMCCC to preserve the independence of senior neighbors in N.E. Tarrant County. Caring volunteers of all

generation teaming through MCCC to bridge the generations for transportation, Helping Hands, and TLCPhone Tree programs result in a simple formula of touching others and being touched.

Thanks to all the caring MCCC volunteers for your commitment to the MCCC mission and to all thegrateful MCCC clients for your genuine appreciation.

    In Memory Of:

    James Driskell

    Our prayers are with

    the family of James

    Driskell. Jim brought a

    smile to all those he

    met through MCCC

    whether it was helping

    us fold newsletters or a

    voice on the TLC phone

    tree, Jims memories

    will be cherished.
