HOW THE Y HAS CHANGED MY LIFE
“Come here to d a frie d” That is the motto that ad e Mc ey YMCA. For Stephe Parker, it is a motto that has mea e differe ce life.
Stephe t j ed the YMCA i the 80s whe there were ma private gyms, a d op were limited. He was a member for several years, but his work tra ferred him out of the area. Up s retur to New York i 2002, e of his t orders
ess was to rej e Mc ey YMCA. I e time that had elapsed, a ew Mc ey had bee lt; the facilities had bee mproved, faces had cha ed, but as Stephe ckly rec zed, the motto a d the spirit of the Mc ey Y, rema ed the same. What has always bee e about the Y for Stephe was his ability to c ect with people, every day, who shared the same ideals, values a d desire to do good. Despite all of the differe ces, the Y was what every e had comm , a d ded the e a er. “I made frie ds here everyday,” he said.
The childre at atte d the Y are what Stephe loves the most. Hav o childre o , he e joys the e ergy a d hopeful ess of hav em ar d. “Private gyms d allow childre , but the Y does, the childre are what make this place . They are the focus a d it is what makes the e a d so importa . The Y teaches childre about healthy lifestyles from a early age, they are e aged here, families are e aged here,” he said. Be active has always bee porta Stephe life so it is easy for him to appreciate how importa e Y is to the childre ew York a d the city itself.
I Stephe eyes, e should be discouraged from or de ed the opp j a Y, which is why Stephe made the dec et
volved with the Heritage Society. Stephe views becom a Heritage Society member as a “good ess dec ” a d a atural part of the pla g process. Whe e thought about how he wa prepare a d pla for the bala ce of his life, he wa ed to get the most ba for his buck. “Where else do you get to see your m ey actually d d?” He said, “this is
t a abstract c cept, you see it -ha d, a d you feel the differe ce it makes.” Wa more forma about our Heritage Society? Please c act
