McBride Caribbean Ltd’s 25thanniversary message delivered byRicardo Strickland, General Manager.

AS McBRIDE CARIBBEAN LIMITEDMcBride celebrates the year of its silver anniversary, we give God thanks for the many blessingsbestowed on it. The significance of this achievement must becontextualised with the popular notion that manufacturing is dying or dead in Barbados as well as researchreflecting the failure of manycompanies within their first five years.

It is worth noting that aerosolmanufacturing is very capital intensiveand McBride has been the largestaerosol manufacturer in the Caribbeanfor the last 20 years.

McBride’s journey has not beenwithout major challenges and setbacks, but it has survived and is wellpositioned with its new state of the artoperation to take advantage of currentand future opportunities.

Within highly competitiveenvironments, McBride’s position andgrowth have been built on strong, quality and customer-centric brands –BOP, Beep, Super Suretox, GO! and theloyal support of customers at home inBarbados and 23 export markets in theCaribbean, Central and South America.

With 85 per cent of its productionexported, McBride is a net earner ofvaluable foreign exchange for theBarbados economy.

The tendency on occasions such as these is to look back and reminisceabout the past. In celebrating thismilestone, reflection is necessary as is paying adequate homage to ourpredecessors who laid the foundationfor what McBride is today.

However, the future of McBride and its journey to other significantmilestones must also be the focus at this time. Looking to the future,McBride’s growth will be led by exportsto new markets and the development of new brands and products while

maintaining its core values and thehighest quality and safety standards. This will enable McBride to enhance itscontribution to national developmentthrough increased earnings of foreignexchange and generate value for its stakeholders.

To McBride’s many stakeholders –shrewd and confident shareholders, supportive distribution partners andsuppliers and, last but by no meansleast, our dedicated staff, both past and present, I express sincerestgratitude to you for your invaluablecontribution to its development.

In addition, the facilitation of themanufacturing sector by Governmentand its agencies has been greatlyappreciated. With the continuedsupport of customers and stakeholders,I’m extremely confident in McBride’scapacity to achieve its current andfuture business objectives.

May God continue to bless McBrideon its journey to achieve futuresuccesses and milestones.

AS McBRIDE CARIBBEANLIMITED celebrates its silveranniversary, divisionalmanager John Taylor hasexpressed his appreciation to the company’s loyalconsumers and particularly to distribution associates andpartners whom he deemedcrucial to McBride’s growth.

“Our distributors havebeen absolutely key to thesuccess of the growth of BOPand other McBride brands in the 23 markets across the Caribbean throughout the years.

“We thank them for theirefforts and look forward to continue working closelywith them in the years to come,” Taylor said.

He also expressed his gratitude to each member of stafffor their efforts over the years in helping the business to grow and succeed.

Taylor has “worn a number of hats” since joining theMcBride team 19 years ago.

His association began in 1995 when he was appointedmanaging director, a post he held for five years. He wasnamed Chairman in 2000.

As divisional manager, Taylor oversees the governanceand strategy of the business operations of his division andkeeps his eyes out for business opportunities to grow themanufacturing and services business in the division.

He is of the view that, futuristically, “McBride is ideallyplaced to expand its markets in the wider Caribbean andCentral America where per capita consumption of aerosolinsecticides is high.

“The other major opportunity for McBride is to expand its product range of aerosol insecticide and other pestcontrol products,” Taylor noted.

JOHN TAYLOR (GP)

McBRIDE CARIBBEAN LIMITEDis a wholly owned subsidiary of regional conglomerate GoddardEnterprises Limited (GEL) and is thelargest and leading manufacturer of aerosol products in the Caribbean.

Established in 1989 under the nameMcBride-Ben (Caribbean) Limited, theplant began operation on August 28,1989, in Thornbury Hill, ChristChurch, and was then owned 50 percent by McBride United Kingdom and 50 per cent by Ben Distributors.

In 1993, the company suffered a short setback when the plant at Thornbury Hill was destroyed by fire.

GEL proceeded to buy Bayer’sfactory (which was located not faraway in Lowlands, Christ Church) as well as McBride United Kingdom’sshares to become full owner of the company.

In September 1994, with a newname, McBride Caribbean Limitedopened and began its operations at thefacility in Lowlands, Christ Church.

A second fire in 2007 also destroyedthe then current plant and between2007 and 2009, GEL had the plantrebuilt to improve upon the old design and implement state-of-the-art machinery.

McBride Caribbean Limited, which

employs 26 people, currentlymanufactures insecticides, insectrepellents, disinfectant spray and airfresheners which it markets under thebrand names BOP, Suretox, Beep andGO!. To ensure the highest quality, theproducts are reviewed by a toxicologist and tested by independent laboratories. Theseproducts are distributed in 24 markets(including Barbados) in the Caribbean,Central and South America, wherethey often enjoy market leadership.

McBride also offers contract fillingservices to aerosol brand owners and is the largest aerosol manufacturer in the Caribbean.

QUALITY AND RELIABILITY are among the many things McBride Caribbean Limited stands for. (GP)

Page 4: McBride Caribbean Limited 25th Anniversary

GOING FORWARD, McBride CaribbeanLimited will be focused on increasingexports to new markets while pursuinggrowth in existing markets.”

That’s the word from general manager,Ricardo Strickland, who also disclosed thatfocus would be placed “on developing newproducts under existing brands ordeveloping new brands”.

Speaking during a recent interview,Strickland, who has been employed withthe company for the past nine years andhas been general manager since 2009, alsosaid that McBride Caribbean Limited’sgrowth strategy would include pursuing the acquisition of other aerosol brands and contract manufacturing.

He disclosed that with McBride

Caribbean Limited exporting 85 per cent of its production to English, Dutch, Frenchand Spanish Caribbean countries, with theexception of Puerto Rico, Cuba and theUnited States Virgin Islands, the companywas making a significant contribution as a net foreign exchange earner.

The general manager said the companyhad witnessed improvements in salesvolumes over the years and had seenmarginal annual growth during the lastfour years that were the most challengingof the last decade.

He noted: “We have grown as a business

during our lifespan with great emphasis on our export markets. However, thisshould not be construed that the localmarket is not critically important to us.”

As McBride Caribbean Limited celebrates its 25th year in business,Strickland said he specially wanted to thank consumers, past and present staff, and the numerous stakeholders for their contribution, dedication andcommitment.

“On this our 25th anniversary, we wantto express our appreciation to our loyalcustomers and supportive stakeholders for their contribution to McBride’sdevelopment. Such support will also be required in achieving future milestones,”he said.

WITH NEARLY 30 years’ experience in the aerosol industry, maintenancetechnician Wilfred Alleyne is a valuable asset to McBrideCaribbean Ltd.

He was previously employed by aerosol manufacturer Bayer(Caribbean) Limited at its Lowlands,Christ Church, facility for ten years. In 1994, Goddard Enterprises Ltd(the parent company of McBrideCaribbean Ltd) purchased theLowlands plant and requested that he remain as maintenance technician

(a position he has held for 20 years). The wealth of knowledge gained overthis 30-year period has made Alleyneinstrumental to the training anddevelopment of the company’soperations personnel.

As maintenance technician,Alleyne is responsible for theservicing and maintenance ofmechanical, electrical and pneumaticequipment. He has been involved innumerous plant upgrade projects andhas travelled overseas to commissionnew equipment for the company.

MAINTAINING health and safety is important to anybusiness or residence. It’s no different at McBrideCaribbean Limited. Health and safety measures areutmost in the minds of each member of staff butmore so, in the minds of the engineering and facilitiesmanager Prince Forde and his staff.

The Engineering Department holds fullresponsibility for the maintenance of the plant andfacility. This includes scheduled testing of safetyequipment and safety procedures as well as generalmaintenance of the grounds, buildings andmachinery. The focus of the department is to create a level of reliability by finding solutions to problemswhich may occur, being proactive in the process andensuring safety systems are working as they should.

“Where reactive maintenance is carried out, we find solutions and measures to reduce theoccurrence of situations which would require thisform of maintenance.

“The Engineering Department is very importantbecause as a company that manufactures products forsale, we cannot sell unless we have products to sell.My department keeps the machines running. Theperformance of the machines is one of the factors thatdirectly impacts the financial performance of thecompany. If the machines aren’t running efficientlythat means it cost more to produce the product.

“The Engineering Department creates value withinthe structure of the company by maintaining a safeworking environment for staff and ensuring that themachines are performing efficiently and are reliable,”Forde, who has been employed with GoddardEnterprises Limited for the past five years, said.

Another of his primary responsibilities is that ofscheduling preventative maintenance together withhis team which includes maintenance techniciansBarry Cumberbatch and Wilfred Alleyne and generalworkers Pauline Dottin and George Lorde. THE PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT atMcBride Caribbean Limited encompasseswarehousing and the production line and is managed by Richard Wharton, who joinedthe company in 1997 and has been theproduction manager for the last five years.

The production department teamcomprises the warehouse supervisorAdrian Hinds, production supervisorHeather Young, two warehouse clerks andfive general workers. The loading andoffloading of container shipments areperformed by contracted service providers.

The department is responsible for thepurchasing, receiving and storage of rawmaterials, and the manufacture and deliveryof all finished goods produced by McBride.

Purchasing is a major activity for thedepartment as a significant percentage of rawmaterials required for the company’soperation are imported from regional and

extra-regional suppliers. Proper planning is

therefore required given

the lengthy lead times for the goods and to ensure the company can satisfy all sales demands.

The production operation has improvedconsiderably over the years and is currently a highly automated process due to theinvestments in new technologies. McBride isan environmentally responsible organisation

and has an

effective recyclingprogramme. Themajority of its wasteis generated from cardboard, plastic andrejected cans and these are recycled with theassistance of a local recycling company.

Wharton said that “efficiency and qualityare always essential” since the companycompetes against regional and international

brands that are produced in countries having lower production costsdue to their access to lower energy, rawmaterials, freight and labour costs.

“We are therefore forced to the positionwhich demands an efficient operation, requiring us to constantly review ouroperations towards achieving continuousimprovements,” the production

manager adeed. “Staff turnover is very low, and

it is our focus to work as a team,” said Wharton.

Dedicated staff makes up thisdepartment which has a record of having some of the most

long-standing employees in the company.

“Our production supervisor for example has been with thecompany from inception, whilemost of the production employeeshave been working at the companyfor an average of 15 years.

“We have a very experiencedteam and each team member is very knowledgeable onproduction, quality and health andsafety matters,” he added.
