the business aspects of sport in culture, sports information, interscholastic

intercollegiate and professional sports, facility management, sport ethics, sport

marketing, sport law, and sport finance.

    What Do Sport Managers Do?

    A. Management Functions. Managers need to get the job done through others.

They plan, organize, lead, and control to achieve organizational objectives.

Managers in all organizations (whether they focus on sports or not) must usethese four functions to get the job done.

    B. Nonmanagement Functions. Sometimes managers need to get involved in the

daily operations and must help their people get the job done. For instance,

helping to clean up after an event shows that a manager is willing to support his

    team of employees.

    C. Management Functions as a System. Managers need the ability to understand

an organization or department as a whole and the relationships among its parts.

As businesses compete in the global marketplace, creative analysis and

judgmentcritical thinkingare needed to resolve conflict and solve problems.

ADs must understand the need to integrate students, playing fields, and

transportation all within an assigned budget. They need to view the entire system

and balance all the needs of the people involved.

    D. Management Roles. Managers must wear many hats. They must juggle being

the figurehead, leader, monitor, spokesperson, entrepreneur, disturbance

    handler, resource allocator, and negotiator.

Deshmukh outlines his priorities as MCA President

    By Javed Farooqui, Sportz Power

Newly elected Mumbai Cricket Association president Vilasrao Deshmukh has

assured that he will give all his time and experience in administration for the

welfare of the game in the metropolis and neighbouring Thane.

In the lead up to the MCA polls, Deshmukhs rivals had pointed out that he had

attended only two meeting during his tenure as vice-president.

I have already said this time I will not give people any chance to complain against

me, Deshmukh told reporters after the election results were announced.

Deshmukh, an influential leader Congress leader from the state, is currently part

of the Union cabinet heading the science & technology ministry with additional

    charge of earth sciences.

This is a huge responsibility, Mr Sharad Pawar has given direction to this

organisation for the past 10 years and has done a lot of good work so I have

    challenges ahead, acknowledged Deshmukh.

As the head of MCA, Deshmukh has three priorities, one of them is to tackle

administrative problems faced by maidans in Mumbai.

During the AGM, which was held after the polling ended, many MCA members

had pointed out issues faced by them, from lack of toilet facilities to proper

drainage systems. The members had pleaded that if Mumbai has to regain its lost

glory in domestic cricket then Maidans have to be properly maintained.

We have maidan clubs with more than 200 members. Our first pr iority will be to

look into the problems faced by Maidans and we are hopeful that we will find

ways in coming days to resolve these issues, the former Maharashtra CM

    claimed.

  • 7/30/2019 mca descrption doc

    14/25

He also promised that the MCA will build new facilities, particularly in Thane and

on the outskirts of Mumbai. MCA members from Thane had complained to the

managing committee that due to paucity of space in Thane and adjoining areas of

Mumbai, kids have to travel all the way to the city to practise.

The second challenge is that in Thane and Mulund we dont have big

playgrounds so people who want to play dont have that facility in those places. In

coming days we will try to build new playgrounds and clubs in those areas,

added Deshmukh. We will sit with the government and try to find plots to create

    infrastructure.

Also on Deshmukhs priority list is employment of Mumbai cricketers. Off late, the

central public sector undertakings have stopped recruiting local talent. Deshmukh

promised that he will work with Sharad Pawar in Delhi to find a solution.

The third main issue is that the central public sector undertakings have stopped

recruiting local cricketers because of which new cricketers are not getting any

opportunity. So we will try to see to it that our cricketers start getting

    employment in PSUs, he held.

On queries about politicians entering sports associations, Deshmukh retorted by

saying that every citizen has a right to contest and the prerogative of electingthem rests with members, referring to his 47 vote victory over opposing

candidate and former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar.

Everybody has a right to contest elections whether it is a politician or a cricketer

or a businessman. Our job is to give better governance and take measures to

improve the standard of cricket and cricketers.

That matter is closed now, the members have clearly demonstrated that they

dont differentiate between the cricketer and politicians. Whatever is in the best

interest of the association they have given the mandate.

He also stated that the MCA president does not need to be available full-time

since the policies are implemented by the core team including vice-president,

joint-secretary and treasurer besides other committee members.

  • 7/30/2019 mca descrption doc

    15/25

This post requires very less time (emphasis ours). (All) we have to do is give

administrative directions which can be implemented by vice-president, joint-

secretary and treasurer and all other members. We are a team and I am the

captain. Each member of the team has to play his role.

He also pointed out that cricketers who want to be part of MCA can work with the

cricket improvement committee, which takes decisions on important cricketing

matters. Sunil Gavaskar was the chief of the CIC until he resigned some months

ago, stating he was not able to dedicate as much time as needed.

Our cricket improvement committee has all top cricketers so they have to think

about cricket, we will give them whatever assistance we can in fulfilling that,

    Deshmukh averred.

He also said he has no problems working with election rival Dilip Vengsarkar and

said he would want him to be a part of the CIC.

He had been a part of CIC for many years, we would want him to give more time

to CIC so that we can produce better cricketers and raise the standard of game in

Test and ODI cricket, Deshmukh said. On the Mumbai Premier League, which was

postponed last year due to crowded international calendar, particularly with the

World Cup and IPL playing out back-to-back, Deshmukh said he needs to go

    through the details.

Till I understand everything properly it is difficult to say anything about that

today. Whatever, promises we have made to our members it is our duty to fulfil it

    first.

What Deshmukh conveniently chose to ignore of course was the fact that seeing

as he had made the step up from MCA vice-president to president, he should

have been in the know of such issues. After all he was not coming in as a fresh

new face n the association's affairs.

Clearly, Deshmukh has many promises to keep and much ground to cover before

he can convince the sceptics that his assurances are merely empty rhetoric.

    COACHES

In sports, a coach or manager is an individual involved in the direction and

instruction of the on-field operations of an team or of individual player. Coaching

entails the application of sport tactics and strategies during the game or contestitself, and usually entails substitution of players and other such actions as needed.

Most coaches are former participants in the sports in which they are involved,

and those who are not have usually had extensive training in the sport in

    question.

A coach, particularly in a major operation, is traditionally aided in his efforts by

one or more assistants known as the coaching staff. The coach's leadership is

often cited, rightly or wrongly, as one of the prime or even the prime ingredient insuccessful efforts by the players under his or her direction. Many times, in major

team sports the principal coach (usually referred to as the head coach) has little

to do with the development of details such as techniques of play or placement of

players on the playing surface, leaving this to assistants while concentrating on

    larger issues.

The title "Coach" is also one of respect or affection, often replacing the first name

much like "Doctor" to become "Coach Smith". Former players will still addresstheir instructor as "Coach", even if both the player and coach him/herself have

    long retired or graduated on.

    Responsibilities Coaching Methods

    Responsibilities:

In some professional sports operations the head coach also serves as general

manager, the team executive responsible for acquiring the rights to players and

negotiating their contracts, generally in recent years with their agents, and for

trading or dismissing players, but these roles have been increasingly likely to be

seen as separate functions fulfilled by separate persons in more recent years,

although many coach/general managers still exist.

Many coaches, usually those of school-sponsored sports teams, also bear the

responsibility of teaching the skills, rules and tactics involved in a particuliar sport

to its players. This can be accomplished individually, by team, by division (ex.

Bowling Coach, Batting Coach, etc.) where applicable. Under this system in which

duties are divided, there is necessarily a head coach who oversees all other

    coaches as a supervisor.

Successful coaches often become as well or even better-known than the playersthey coach, and in recent years have come to command high salaries and have

agents of their own to negotiate their contracts with the teams.

    Coaching methods:

Coaching techniques and philosophies are often taught by prominent coaches to

youth and high school coaches at events referred to as "coaching clinics" where

literature supports the increase of specific, positive feed back in order to achieve

optimal effects of coaching. The classic practice consists of the on-court

demonstrations and walkthroughs to learn the plays and strategies. Other

applications are used to create a more effective learning environment that will

reach all the athletes. Coaching philosophies are passed along from one

generation of coaches to another through these events, and of course the

tendency of assistant coaches serving under a successful head coach being the

most likely to be given an opportunity to become head coaches in their own right.

Many coaches are former players of the sport themselves, and coaches of

professional sports teams are sometimes retired players.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF SPORTS MANAGER

A Day in the life of a Sports Manager

Sports managers spend their time behind the scenes coordinating all business-

related activities for the team that employs them. During the playing season they

may work seven days a week. When they work for college or professional teams

they stay behind in their office at the teams home facility while the team travels

to away games. A few who have been in the business for many years travel with

the team from city to city, but they are the exception. During the off-season, the

manager is busy negotiating trades and signing free agents. The sports manager

or general manager, as he/she is sometimes called, signs all players to the

professional team. According to one successful manager, It is more important to

know which deals not to make than which deals you should make. This is oftenthe most delicate aspect of the job, as a manager must make deals that satisfy the

owners, without alienating any of the players. Managers who work for a

professional sports team are involved in the yearly ritual of drafting college

players. They work closely with the coach and scouts to determine which players

are the most talented, economically feasible, and play positions the team needs.

Managers must do this while keeping an eye on the teams budget. They are in

charge of everyones salary, from the coach and players down to the assistants.

They also make financial arrangements for travel, equipment, and uniform

purchases and must factor into their budgets player injury and the possible teamsuccess that leads to additional playing and travel costs. Sports managers have to

participate in press conferences and explain the reasons for their decisions to the

media, without giving away their intentions for the future. They may be the

subject of both complimentary and critical press reports which they must be able

to ignore. When they sign a great player, they are considered heroes. When a

respected player leaves the team or slides into a losing streak, managers are often

seen as contributing to the teams downfall. Managers should expect to be fired

and forced to relocate a number of times during their careers. For all of these

reasons, this is a highly stressful job.

    Paying Your Dues:

There is no one ideal background for a sports manager. Sports managers should,

of course, love the game they are managing and should have experience playing

or coaching it. Most managers have spent time as an assistant to a manager or

coach while in high school and college. Most managers begin managing local

school teams, work their way up to the college level and eventually work with

professional athletes. Some may have a degree in physical education, with a

business minor, which allows them to handle the business aspects of their work.

For managers of professional teams, a business degree is recommended. Themanager should be familiar with contract laws, economics, and accounting. There

are no licensing requirements for managers. They may belong to an organization

or association of managers in their particular sport.

    Associated Careers:

The general manager is usually promoted from the position of head coach or head

of scouting. A coach organizes practice schedules and develops playing strategies

for the team. The scout visits teams in lower divisions of the sport to find newtalent: For example, College Team scouts attend high school events. They meet

with exceptional players and watch them play. When they find a player that they

think would be an asset to their team, they generally work out a scholarship plan

to entice the player to attend their employers school.

First major function is planning (such as in anticipation of future or upcoming

events). Second is organizing (such as dividing workload). Third is leading (such as

motivating for change). Last is coordinating (such as 'smoothing' and reporting

    any obstacles.
