Thank You
The courts are noticeably cleaner but there are still some members who
leave glass bottles on the ground, outside of the recycling containers.
These receptacles are for “recyclable” materials……..aluminum, plastic,
glass, paper, cardboard.
PLEASE DO NOT PUT FOOD SCRAPS in these units and use the open top
bins for that purpose.
So Please
DO NOT PUT GLASS BOTTLES ON THE GROUND BUT PLACE THEM IN
THE RECYCLING CONTAINERS.

Completion of the Score-sheet
Please take the time to fill out the score-sheet correctly. It is putting added pressure on the
scorekeeping staff when they have to investigate which teams are playing in what leagues. You
can all see the number of teams in our leagues and it is no mean feat to get this updated ready
for posting on Sunday so please play your part in assisting us to accomplish this.
SENIOR players your divisions are either RED, WHITE or GREEN.
DO NOT PUT “SENIORS” in the DIVISION BOX.

Happy Independence Day
The 2nd
Annual Gene Rittburg Tournament
Wait a minute, I tell ya. You ain’t heard nothin’.
You wanna hear Toot Toot Tootsie? Alright, hold on, hold on. Hello, listen, play Toot Toot Toostie, three chorus, you understand? In the third chorus, I whistle. Now give it to ‘em hard and heavy. Go ahead. Toot, toot, tootsie, goodbye! Toot, toot, tootsie, don’t cry!
The Second Annual Gene Rittburg Memorial Bocce Tournament was held on Saturday June 17th, 2017 in Martinez, CA, and started with a walk down memory lane for one of Gene’s dearest friends. It’s 6am and Bill Kintana is sipping his caramel macchiato, helping the setup crew prepare for the day. As Al Jolson bellows from the portable speaker, Bill shares childhood memories of him and his father listening to The World’s Greatest Entertainer. The conversation shifts to Gene, and he and the family share a couple off-color memories of the World’s Greatest Guy, the kind he would have been proud of. They looked at the plaque on the clubhouse, recently re-named in his honor, and missed him dearly.
Nineteen teams braved the extreme heat to honor a great man, chow down on some killer grub, compete for bragging rights, and raise money for needy children.
“Boy that horseradish sauce is great,” a player remarked during lunch. “I’m going for seconds on the pasta salad,” another said. That’s what you get with fresh-made food that’s prepared onsite with love by our volunteers. Food comas were the norm after everyone enjoyed salad, pasta salad, baked beans, pulled pork sliders and tri-tip sandwiches.

Happy Independence Day
Smiles spread across a number of faces as they won raffle prizes that included a TV, barbecue, tablet, $100 worth of scratcher tickets (way to go Bob Mann!), Wing Stop and See’s Candy gift certificates, VISA gift cards and more.
Prizes for the top–performing teams included shirts branded with the newly
designed tournament logo, a firefighter-themed drawing made by a local child, and a bottle of wine handmade by Gene’s friend and teammate Luigi Genicolo. A highlight of the day for the Rittburg/Calhoon family was when Roger Gregoire, who won first place and also played with Gene at the Peppermill, said that he would cherish the wine bottle and keep it forever unopened, in honor of Gene.
Congratulations to the top 4 teams – Pittsburg Pirates (repeat Champions!),
Slow Hand Boogie, On a Roll and Rittburg Rollers. Thank you to all of the attendees, whose generosity allowed us to send a check
to Where Angels Play for two thousand dollars. A special thank you to all of the volunteers (you know who you are) who helped us put on this event. A final thank you to our donors- Wing Stop Martinez, Diane, Maria, Sandy, George, Babe and Luigi. Without you, this would not have been possible.
The Where Angels Play Foundation has made it its
mission to give children in areas that have suffered tragedies, an oasis in the form of a playground. It can give them a sense of normalcy after the storm and be the symbol that their community will recover. The playgrounds are also
designated to celebrate the life of a given “angel,” a child/hero who inspired the community and was taken too soon due to violence. It can give their family a place to remember and highlight what made their angel so special.

Martinez Recreation Playground Program
On Tuesday July 11th the Martinez Bocce Federation hosted a group of young students from the
Martinez Recreation Playground Program, supervised by Barbara Patchin and the theme was to
introduce them to the world of bocce and how the history of Martinez had a pronounced
influence on the sport in our town. Some 30 children took part and after watching a game being
played by the “Martinez Morning Mafia” they were split up in 4 groups and were introduced to
the basics of the game. About an hour later it was time to leave and Barbara said that the
children had a great time.
Coaches for the day included Mike Anselmo, Redmond O’Colonies, Steve Burnett, Mike Fontana,
Keith Machado, Bob Pentacoff & Vic Delpine.
