I welcome especially: Mr Phil Nutt, Chairperson, and Members of the Murray Bridge High School Governing Council, Mrs Janelle Traeger, Chairperson, and members of Parents and Friends Committee, The Mayor of The Rural City of Murray Bridge, Mr Allan Arbon, Guest Speaker, Mr Joe Hoad, Mr Peter Chislett, Regional Director Murray and Mallee, DECS, Mr Harold McLaren representing the McLaren Family, Mr Gordon Schultz and Merilyn representing Adam and the Schultz Family We are a very proud school community. Ours is a pride grown through achievement. For tonight’s address I identify achievements in the school from the time the Year 12’s were in Year 8, to complement the approach taken in the Year 12 Year book. When the Year 12’s were in Year 8 in 2005 we were developing the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. At the same time the Lower Murray Skills Centre was completed and Automotive and Polymer processing courses began. In one exciting evening we opened the Murals, painted by Ivan Campbell, the Skills Centre and the Industrial kitchen. Mr Hall won a Premier’s Industry award. You went on the Year 8 camp to Monarto: and planted trees with Mr Hall and Mr Duguid. Jazz legend Don Burrows played with 140 students from Murraylands schools here in concert in a very special music experience. The Australian Girls Choir chose Murray Bridge High School for their first country tour. Our first eleven students arrived from China, their families working at T&R. Beryl McLaren and her family established the Geoff and Beryl McLaren Scholarship in memory of Beryl’s late husband Federal Labor MP Geoff McLaren. At the time Harold said: Whilst at school my father developed his strong sense of social justice. He strongly believed all children should have the opportunity to achieve their full potential not just the children of the wealthy. As a State School Principal, I encourage our young people and our school community to advocate for public education and social justice, with an awareness grown from having attended a school with the some of the most disadvantaged groups of people. I formerly thank the McLaren family for their support of Murray Bridge High School students. I take the opportunity to similarly thank the Schultz family for their donation of a scholarship. Adam, now an engineer, is a former student of Murray Bridge High School. In 2006 when Year 12s were in Year 9 it was the year of the 1956 Flood Commemoration. Mr Stewart’s class worked with local historian Mr Ken Wells to imagine how high the water once reached. In 2006 our students achieved IB Certificates for the first time. In 2006 the Youth Opportunities Program was introduced with tremendous mentoring and financial support from the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge. In 2007 many of you had the benefit of the program when you were in Year 10. In 2006 the Accelerated class began. The first Year 12 graduates are here tonight. By 2007 we had more than 60 Chinese students, a number of Sudanese students and we had introduced Arabic. Ngarrindjeri language was recognised by the IBO and taught at year 12 level in the SACE for the first time. After 5 years of fundraising, the Cafeteria was opened to add to the industrial kitchen. We had hosted students from Funabashi High School in Tokyo for eight years. Some of you have been fortunate in being part of the first return visits in 2007 and 2008. In 2008 the SAPOL Rock Band performed at an assembly and presented Certificates in IVEC to Students in the Special Unit. The Australian Girls Choir visited again in 2008 – in response to the warmth of the community from their first visit. Dr Tattersall won an award for his e- learning work in Murray Bridge High School, a leading e-learning school. Murray Bridge High School successfully applied to become a lead school in the Hills-Murraylands Trade School for the Future. Mrs Elston became our first Apprenticeship Broker. And now 2009. Many of you have undertaken VET courses in Vocational Education and training, benefiting from the Lower Murray Skills Centre and the Industrial Kitchen and Cafeteria. Others of you have undertaken academic subjects intending to go on to University. Be aware that you are leaving a country High School which has determinedly built these pathways for you. Next year a $1.7 million Trade Training Centre in Electro–technology will be built to offer new vocational courses. Very few country schools have been able to maintain, let alone expand, courses for students. Leave being proud of your school and being proud of your community, a community which has given so much support to you. Let me conclude this section by highlighting this year’s Rock Eisteddfod. This augurs well for 2010 when Murray Bridge is a Regional Centre of Culture. The school has secured a $40,000 ARTSsmart grant to enable professional artists and technicians to work with students. Presentation Night is a very important occasion for Year 12 students. And so especially to our year 12 students who are leaving, I trust that the school motto will serve you well: Your school motto, from the ancient Greek story of Apollo thousands of years old, translated into the Latin language by the Romans in a book called the Aeneid, brought by the English to the establishment of Murray Bridge High School in 1913 – the school vision, the story of generations, the values of excellence, of respect, and of working together: Sic Itur ad Astra By striving we reach the stars. And with the wisdom of Ngarrindjeri culture, formally added to the motto in reconciliation in 2001: Ngunangk tuldar witjunggildhur toran Together we gather the stars. CHRIS SEARLE RETIRES Before concluding I want to thank Chris Searle for a lifetime of dedication to State school students. Geoff Searle started teaching at Minlaton in 1970. Christine met Geoff when she was appointed to Minlaton in 1973, they married in 1974 and moved to Port Pirie in 1975 where they lived for eight years. During this time Darren and Adam were born. Geoff was appointed to Murray Bridge High School in 1983. During this time Darren went to Fraser Park Primar y School, Murray Bridge High School and on to University and is now a Pharmacist. Adam took a different direction into TAFE and works in Horticulture. Chris returned to teaching at Murray Bridge High School in 1986 initially as a contract teacher until she regained permanency in 1990. She has taught Maths, Humanities (SOSE), Work Education, Health Education, History, a Retail VET course and Community Studies. For the last five years Chris has, as Assistant Principal responsible for Senior School, been very highly regarded by students and her knowledge and advice invaluable. For the last ten years Chris has been a SSABSA (now SACEBoard) moderator, supporting teachers and assessing student work state-wide. Chris will be greatly missed by staff and students. SCHOLARSHIPS

It has again been a pleasure to be involved with theCommittee this year. Members attended GoverningCouncil meetings throughout the year and wereinvolved in the discussions of the new uniform andthe changes to school photos.

Thank you to the parents who attended themeetings. It has been great to represent you overthe years. To the parents of the Year 12‘s, thank youfor your contributions over the years.

As I finish my time as a school parent it is a chanceto reflect on all the years of being involved inschools. It is like a journey to an unknowndestination. We start out with the excitement andanticipation that the young 5 year old feels about

going to school and leaving the security of home.Parents experience the fear of how the child willcope but the joy of that freedom to get our life backwithout the little ones being constantly around. This then moves on to the child’s joy or hatred ofthe teachers, the subjects, homework and school ingeneral. Over the years I have been impressed withthe opportunities that students are given and thevast range of activities that they experience. Hownew and different it is since you or I went to school! Now as the students finish their schooling it againbecomes an unknown as they await results forfurther study or jobs. It can be a joyous time butalso an uncertain time and as parents we are onceagain the main support for them.

We, at Murray Bridge High, are able to see many ofthe activities highlighted in the newsletters. Alsowe have seen our students feature prominently inall aspects of the Community.

To the teachers, thank you for organising activitiesthroughout the year. Thank you also for yoursupport and encouragement of all students. Tothose leaving to go to other schools, we wish you allthe best. To those retiring, thank you for yourcommitment to Murray Bridge High School and ourchildren’s learning over the years.

Finally, to the students, congratulations on yourefforts this year. Be proud of your achievements. Tothe Year 12 students, good luck in whatever you do.
