THE CONSERVATIVE SYNAGOGUES in Detroit wereforward thinking when we came together

to create joint programs for Purim, Selichotand Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of Av. Thisyear Tisha B’Av will be observed atCongregation Shaarey Zedek on Monday,

July 31. This day is regarded as the saddest day on the Jewishcalendar, and has a 25-hour fast, like Yom Kippur. Yom Kippuris also a solemn day, but especially toward the end of the Neilahservice, we should be joyous that we have been sealed in thebook of life for another year.

We mourn the destruction of both Temples in Jerusalem,the first by the Babylonians, and the second by the Romans.Also remembered are the murder of Ten Martyrs by theRomans, the Crusades, the Bar Kochba slaughter, and manymore calamities. In 1994 there was the bombing of the JCC inBuenos Aires where 85 were killed and over 300 injured.Traditionally we read Eikha, the Book of Lamentations, whilesitting on the floor, and not wearing leather shoes.

IN JUNE WE CELEBRATE 50 YEARS of Jews beingable to live and worship freely in Jerusalem.At the end of July we observe Tisha B'av, theday that commemorates the destruction thatbefell our people, at least in part because ofour inability to disagree with each other inpeace, calm and mutual respect.

I offer two poems from Yehuda Amichai, one of Israel'sgreatest poets. He fought in most of Israel's wars, and lovedJerusalem and the Jewish people, but worried about themdeeply, as well. We lost Jerusalem two thousand years ago because ofbitter divisiveness. We must not do so again.

IWOULD LIKE TO DEDICATE this article in honorof our adult B’nai Mitzvah class, who willcollectively be celebrating the culminationof their group studies at their Shabbat RoshChodesh ceremony on June 24.

During class we spent time discussing the differencesbetween the various readings which take place during theTorah service. The specific section of Torah which is read eachweek is known as the Parashat HaShavua (portion of theweek), sometimes called Sedrah. There are 54 parashiyot(plural of parasha) in the yearly Torah reading cycle, plus thereare additional Torah readings specific to the various holidays.The word Torah generally refers to the Five Books of Moses(Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy). Theword itself comes from the root word “teaching,” similar to theHebrew word for teacher — morah. The Haftarah, on the other hand, is a selection from thebook of Nevi’im (Prophets) and and is read following the Torahreading. The theme of the Haftarah parallels either theParashat HaShavua or the holiday. The word Haftarah isderived from the Hebrew root meaning “additional” or “leftover.” In Ashkenazi Hebrew, it is pronounced “haf-TO-rah” andin the modern Sephardic pronunciation, it is “haf-ta-RAH.” Itis often mistakenly assumed that the word is related to Torah,however the similarity is only coincidental. In Hebrew,Haftarah is spelled הרטפה (with a tet), while Torah is ת(with a tav). Between the Torah and Haftarah in the Torah service isthe Maftir reading. Maftir is spelled ריטפמ and therefore islinguistically related to the word Haftarah — the literal

of the Hebrew alphabet – and not with an alef– the first letter?” After a long pause andwithout anyone proferring an answer, Mr.Wiesel said, “just so you should ask thequestion.” Jews are urged by their teachers and parents to askquestions. Isidor Isaac Rabi (1898-1988), the winner of the 1944Nobel Prize in Physics remembers that his mother Janet TeigRabi would ask him in his childhood years what good questionhe had asked in school. Talmudic study is meant, I believe, not to give answers butto help us to sharpen our minds and to ask “better” questions.

Upcoming Family Events at Adat Shalom

We have a fantastic summer planned for our young families atAdat Shalom! We kicked off the season with our redesigned TotShabbat service on May 13, led by Hazzan Gross. It will returnonce a month beginning in September, after our summertimeShabbat in the Sun programs conclude.

Shabbat in the Sun is a fun and engaging outdoor event held onFriday evening, in which we welcome Shabbat on the Adat Shalomplayground with singing, dancing, friends and good food. Markyour calendars for June 23, July 28 and August 25.

Baby & Me with Lindsay Mall from the Bubble Club will continueon Sundays throughout the summer, with classes for parents withbabies up to 6 months old and those with babies from 7 – 13months. Coming this fall, we will add a Sunday morning Toddler& Me class. Stay tuned for more information.

Tuesdays with Tots moves to Room 103 for the summer so that wehave direct access to our playground. We will still have toys, musicand playtime but now we are inviting the sunshine to join us aswell. Come play on Tuesdays, June 13, July 11 and August 8 from10 to 11:30 a.m.

Each year, as part of our 7th grade curriculum, ourstudents learn about the history of the Jewishcommunities of Europe, study the events leading up tothe Holocaust and the Holocaust itself, visit theHolocaust Memorial Center, and most of our studentstake part in an essay competition sponsored by the AdatShalom Men's Club. The Men's Club provides volunteerswho, along with clergy, grade the anonymoussubmissions, and also provides prizes of $50, $25, and$35 Visa gift cards for the winners. Men's Club PresidentAlan Chandross helped coordinate, alongside SammiShapiro, and the volunteer judges were Rabbi AaronBergman, Rabbi Rachel Shere, Joe Wener, Bobby Blum,Les Hubert, and Joey Lebovic.

The students who participated in the essay contest were:Micah Bienstock, Daniel Bradford, Leora Kaye, JordanManela, Joshua Pollak, Raquel Rosenfeld, MadelineSandberg, and Claire Wolfe. Below are the winners ,along with excerpts from their essays:

First Place- Madeline Sandberg (Orchard Lake MiddleSchool) "People who otherwise might have lived peacefully withthe Jews collaborated with the Nazis and entire familieswere lost. This shows how important it is to make surethat all people understand what happened because theHolocaust was not just a few crazy individuals.Moreover, those who survived the Holocaust are gettingolder and soon will not be able to tell their storiesthemselves. It is only through education that people inthe future will understand the Holocaust." Second Place- Leora Kaye (Warner Middle School) "It’s hard to believe that only 70 years ago, the Naziswere able to kill over 6 million Jews. This happenedthrough a series of well organized planned events. Whenthings aren’t going well, sometimes people look forsomeone or something to blame their problems on.Hitler convinced people that the Jews were at fault forthe bad economy, unemployment and everything elsethat was going wrong in Eastern Europe at that time.This was simply because the Jewish religion hasdifferent traditions and ways of life that stand out.Nowadays, most people don't think of this as a problem.But Hitler brought it to everyone's attention, and gotpeople to believe that the Jews were bad people. "

Third Place- Raquel Rosenfeld (Berkshire MiddleSchool) "I think the best ways of making the lessons come aliveis by teaching it not just with textbooks but real peoplewho may have been involved or who had relatives in-volved, this is so that the kids will have an understand-ing from someone who went through this. Another goodway is since kids learn things usually better with some-thing they are familiar with people could use technologyto learn about the Holocaust.”

Engaging youth is an ongoing goal of Adat Shalom. I have thepleasure of working with dedicated staff, parents and teens tocreate and lead a variety of programs that help our youth feel alasting connection to our clergy, staff, and congregation. Thisunique programming is a great way for youth to have fun withtheir friends and make new ones. There was truly something foreveryone this year.

A few highlights…

Our seventh grade led a meaningful Yom Hashoah obvservance forgrades 4-6 and met with survivor Mrs. Mania Salinger, a memberof our congregation, pictured above in front of the Holocaust Torah.

● Youth were engaged and happy during the High Holidayyouth activities. Teens worked and volunteered to help leadactivity rooms.

● The Fall picnic and Spring BBQ were enjoyed by kids andtheir families thanks to our partnership with the Men’s Club.

● 39 8th-12th graders were dedicated to being Madrichim(teacher assistants).

● Kindergarten to 5th graders had fun at the Kids’ Afternoonof Fun and Kids’ Night Out programs.

● 6th to 8th graders enjoyed socializing during “Lanes &Games” bowling and a visit to Marvelous Marvin's MechanicalMuseum as well as volunteeringwith the Teen Volunteer Corps.

● 7th to 12th graders made a bigdifference throughout the yearvolunteering with the TeenVolunteer Corps at Adat Shalom(Tech Connect, etc.,) and atorganizations throughout MetroDetroit (JARC, Avalon Village, andmore.)

● The Adat Shalom clergy and I visited with students at Hilleland at Frankel Jewish Academy throughout the year to chatand connect with students.

● College students received Chanukah and Pesach packagesthanks to our partnership with parents that volunteered toassemble the packages.

Our Active AffiliatesMEN’S CLUB MUSINGS... BY ALAN CHANDROSS

Shalom! We’ve completed most of our formalprogramming year. Many club and board memberssupported our success, and provided numerousvolunteer hours in front of the curtain and behind thescenes. In particular, Bobby Blum, George Dickstein,Steve Goldsmith, Gary Graff, Larry Kaplan, JoeyLebovic, Aaron Perlman, David Shevrin, Michael Weil,Steve Woronoff, and Lon Zaback provided significanttime and effort to the club. I thank you immensely foryour service. The Men’s Club and the shul arefortunate to count you all as members, and I ampersonally grateful for the help you have providedduring my first year as president.

It has been a busy, exciting, rewarding, andeducational year, so I wanted to share some personalhighlights and club opportunities. In early summer oflast year, I attended our Housing the Homeless event,and enjoyed the opportunity to serve and share a mealwith this disadvantaged community. We enjoyedtalking about our respective backgrounds, and theirresilience and perspective was heartening to hear anddiscuss. This year, we will be serving dinner onWednesday night, July 5, and I encourage you to joinus in this important endeavor.

Later in the year, we shared dinner and a movie withTemple Israel’s Brotherhood, at our Deli Man combinedcongregational event. Everyone is excited about futurecombined initiatives, which we hope to bring to you inthe coming year. We also renewed an older program,Hearing Men’s Voices, that provided a forum to exploreJewish men’s place in our community. The turnoutwas modest but engaging and I also look forward tomore of these discussions in the future.

Our continuing programs also showed growth andexcitement. The Daddy Daughter Dance drew ourlargest crowd ever, and other yearly events such as theSports Night, Road Rally, and morning breakfastprograms continued to draw many participants. Welook forward to bringing these to you again in thecoming year, and are always open to suggestions andideas to make them even better!

Adat Shalom Men’s Club is always looking to improveand to incorporate your ideas, suggestions, and helpfulhints. As president, I have appreciated your feedbackduring the past year, and look forward to working withyou over the upcoming season. has never been more necessary or relevant. The limitations of Shabbat travel ask us to make adecision about where to be and then to be fully presentthere. Technology may have brought the world to ourfingertips, but at the same time, it often relegates ourfriends and family to arm’s length. On Shabbat, we putaway our screens so we can better focus on the faces ofour loved ones. When we observe Shabbat, wetemporarily exit the competitive pressure of modernsociety and enter a much needed refuge of purpose andpeace. Society’s response to the short attention spans andFOMO which plague 21st century minds has been tospout the newfound miracles of “mindfulness.”Mindfulness, however, is hardly a new concept. TheMishnah, written two thousand years ago, teaches us tostop whatever we are doing and express gratitude at leastone hundred times a day; this is our ancient tradition’sway of guiding our focus and reminding us to remain evermindful of the wonder that lies around and within us. Some of the world’s problems will, no doubt, besolved through ingenuity and innovation; others,however, may find their solution in answers given longbefore the problems ever manifested. Such is the wisdomof our Torah.

Even though this is a sad time, the special Eikhamelody can be very moving and inspirational. It givesus a chance to remember our past, and also looktoward the future: the rebuilding of connections, andrecommitting to our future. During the afternoonMincha service we add the blessing “BonehYerushalayim” (who builds Jerusalem) to look towarda bright future. Please try to attend this year’s service. It is uniqueand moving, and brings us together as a ConservativeJewish community.

meaning also referring to something thatwas added. The Maftir is always the lastsection read from the Torah. Sometimes itis a repeat of a section which was alreadyread (I like to refer to this as the encore),and sometimes it is a completely differentreading, read from a different Torahscroll. Each holiday is assigned its ownspecial Maftir. Are you confused yet?Here’s where it gets really confusing. Theperson who chants the Haftarah is giventhe Maftir aliyah, and is called up to theTorah for the very last Torah reading tochant the blessings before and after theMaftir reading. Our adult B’nai Mitzvah class hasstudied very hard over the past 18months. Some started from scratch,literally learning for the first time how toread Hebrew, starting with the alef-bet.Now all of them will stand on the bimah,chanting the sacred words of ourtradition. It has been an honor to learnwith them. I look forward to continuingour studies and to begin working with anew adult B’nai Mitzvah group in thefuture!

Today, there are many books being publishedwhich ask the question: Why did theHolocaust – Shoah - occur? In a recentlypublished book, the word “why” occurs in abook title. A teacher and student ofHolocaust history, Peter Hayes, has writtenan important book entitled “Why?Explaining the Holocaust.” (2017). On the last page (343) of his book heposits the following possibility: if GustavKrupp von Bohlen, head of the NationalAssociation of German Industry, had refusedto follow an order of Hitler on April 1, 1933,there might not have been a Holocaust. Afterprotesting Hitler’s order to dismiss all hisemployees “who were Jews or affiliated withother political parties,” Krupp gave in andfired “everyone of whom the Nazisdisapproved on April 5 and thus breaking hiscontracts with each of these people.” Peter Hayes concludes his book with aproverb “Beware the beginnings.” Of whatbeginnings should we be aware? That is aquestion which we need to ask to ourselvesand to others in our Jewish and worldcommunities.
