Mayor and volunteers brave Seaburn seas for Boxing Day Dip

to raise money for the Mayor’s chosen charities this year.Cllr Atkinson said: “Myself and my team took part in

the annual Boxing Day Dip at Seaburn. “The monies raised will go towards my charity fund for this year. The organisa-tions that I am supporting are The Great North Air Ambulance, The Ferry-hill Ladder Centre and St Luke’s Church in Ferryhill.”Cllr Atkinson praised all the volunteers who took part and helped him raise money for his chosen causes: “None of my team members had partici-pated in anything like this before,” he said, “and a few of them were very nervous of doing the dip - including myself. “However, we all overcame our fears and had a tremendous day. The atmosphere at Seaburn, with lots of others taking part in their own dips, was remarkable.“Our initial target was £500, but thanks to the tremendous support from local residents and dona-tions from people from far and wide, our final total looks to be in excess of £1,000.”

Ferryhill mother, Karen Whittle, whose daughter Rebecca passed away suddenly after suffering a severe allergic reaction when she was just fifteen years old, has launched a petition to raise awareness of the potential for allergic reaction by asthma suffer-ers.Mrs Whittle said: “Rebecca had asthma, but we were never told of the link between asthma and severe allergies and there-fore she was never tested for any allergies.“After losing Rebecca we can’t just sit and do nothing, we have to do something so that other families don’t have to suffer the pain we have because it’s absolutely devastating.“With this petition we are trying to raise awareness of anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening allergic response that can be fatal if it isn’t treated immedi-ately.

Rebecca, who was a student of Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College and also delivered the Chapter in the town, showed no signs of allergic reaction before she died in September 2014.To sign the petition, visit change.org and search ‘everyone with asthma should have the automatic right to be tested for aller-gies’.

Free courses for the local community are being rolled out over the next few weeks at Endeavour Wood-crafts in Ferryhill. These include:• Fortnightly Messy Play

Three of the people prosecuted were from the local area.

Eight in court for dropping litter

Eight people have been ordered to pay hundreds of pounds between them after being taken to court for dropping litter.Six women and two men from County Durham were each handed fines having been prosecuted by Durham County Council for littering.The eight had dropped litter at locations through-out the county, including Bishop Auckland town centre and Beveridge Way in Newton Aycliffe, from August 2016.Five of the defendants were found guilty in their absence at Darlington Mag-istrates Court on Monday, and fined £80 with £130 costs and £30 victim sur-charge.They were: Jillian Burns, 52, of Broom Cottages, Ferryhill.Jane Clack, 57, of Meadow View, West Auckland.Adam Scott Colin, 25, of Aysgarth Close, Newton

Aycliffe.Gavin Peter McGurk, 30, of Gudmunsen Avenue, Bishop Auckland.Tracie Louise Vayro, 29, of Coleridge Road, Chilton.Two defendants pleaded guilty by post and were given £60 fines, £30 victim surcharges and £60 costs each.They were:Anna Marie Henderson, 45, of Silverdale Place, Newton Aycliffe. Elaine Webb, 45, of Lusby Crescent, Bishop Auckland.One defendant attended court and pleaded guilty.Shannon Mel Kenny, 18, of Hollyhurst Road, Corn-forth, was fined £80 and

ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £60 in costs. A quantity of alcohol was seized from a group of youths in Ferryhill over Christmas.

Police crack down on teen drinking

Officers from Ferryhill Police were out and about in the town following reports of youths drinking on the streets over the

festive period. A quantity of alcohol was seized from a group of youths aged 16 at the Leisure Centre.

A spokesperson for Fer-ryhill Beat Team asked: “Do you know where your children are and what they are doing?”

“The next meeting of the association will be 7th March, but don’t forget to keep an eye out for our regular coffee mornings which are held at the Royal British Legion, Ferryhill Station. Please contact Margaret Walton for more information on 01740 652994.”

Residents can now sign up for next year’s garden waste collection service.The fortnightly service will run between spring and autumn with 17 col-lections, starting in March 2017. Subscriptions are avail-able throughout the year for an annual fee of £25, although residents must subscribe before Tuesday 14th February 2017 to guarantee receiving all 17 collections. Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: “Over 70,000 households subscribed to the garden waste collection service in 2016 and we’re pleased to announce the start of subscriptions for 2017. “The annual fee has in-creased to £25 compared to last year’s subscription of £20. This is to ensure the service can continue despite current financial pressures.”Over the next couple of months, the council will be contacting eligible households by email or letter with details of how to subscribe. In order to subscribe, residents must use the letter sent to their home regarding the 2017 service as garden waste reference numbers are unique to

each property. Subscriptions made using a different letter or last year’s letter or reference number will not be reg-istered for garden waste collections.Residents can also visit www.durham.gov.uk/gar-denwaste to see if their property is eligible and to sign up.They will receive a green bin sticker and a collection calendar. Calendars will be issued from January.Those who have previously subscribed for three years will automatically receive their bin sticker and calendar in January.Garden waste collections in Teesdale are provided by Rotters Composting. Residents should contact Rotters at www.rotters.org or call 01833 690 022. Garden waste collec-tions do not take place during the winter months. Begin the New Year with free group exercise classes

People hoping to get fitter and healthier in 2017 can kick start their New Year resolutions this January with free group exercise (GX) classes.The free taster classes are available from Tuesday 3rd to Sunday 15th January at all Durham County Council managed leisure centres. Helen Tones, physical activity co-ordinator, said: “Group exercise classes are a fantastic way to get fit and stay fit, with our programming offering eve-rything from cardio and physical and mental well-being classes to resistance and toning sessions. “Many people don’t know what to expect with a class and think it will be too advanced, strenuous or that they simply won’t enjoy it. That’s not the case – lots are relaxed, fun

and enjoyable and even the more intense classes allow individuals to work at their own pace.” There are three levels of class available in January.Classes such as Gentle Aerobics and Circuits, Yoga or Pilates are ideal for those wanting to ease themselves into a new fitness programme gently or if returning to exercise after a break.Exercisers wanting to increase or maintain their current level of fitness can take advantage of classes such as boxer-cise, bodypump, zumba and clubbercise and, for those who want more of a challenge, high inten-sity classes such as boot camp, metafit, cyclenergy and functional training achieve maximum results and help to push partici-

Melanie Edmenson School of Dance, which meets at St Aidan’s Church Hall in Chilton, will be holding free Ballerina-inspired dance workshops on January 7th from 1.15pm to 2.45pm.Principal teacher, Melanie Edmenson said: “The dance workshops are open to all. Come along, meet our ballerinas and let your budding ballerina have their photo taken.“All participants will receive a worksheet and a certificate.”The dance school was established by Melanie in 1985 and all teachers are qualified with the Interna-tional Dance Teachers As-sociation (IDTA) and Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and hold relevant CRB and first aid certificates.RAD have teamed up with the creators of the film that will light up every young dancer’s Christmas this year: the animated musical fantasy adventure Ballerina to create the new dance which will be taught at St Aidan’s and at other workshops across the country.

Ballerina follows orphan, Felicie, who has one dream: to become a ballet dancer in Paris. Tenlands Care Home in Ferryhill was delighted to receive a Christmas visit from Fer-ryhill’s police officers, who brought along gifts for the residents.

Residents and staff at Tenlands Care Home in Ferryhill enjoyed a visit from Durham Constabu-lary’s Ferryhill team on Friday 23rd December. Chris, Dave And Kerris, Community Liaison Officer Faye Callan along with Katie, Emily and Abbie from the Partnerships team in Headquarters had a lovely morning giving over 30 gifts to residents, all kindly donated by officers of Durham Constabulary.A spokesperson said, “They came into our home and give the residents some beautiful Christmas presents and got everyone into the spirit of Christ-mas. We have forty residents and each person was very grateful. “This was such a generous act of good will and a bril-liant sense of community spirit.”Officers made lots of new

Dear Editor,

With reference to a story in The Chapter issue 808. Tom Scully talks a good game about Ferryhill needing a food store. The way he is talking you'd think Ferryhill was getting an Aldi, Asda etc. If this was the case the whole of Ferryhill would sign his petition but we are not, we will end up with a food store with prices on par with the one’s inside local petrol stations and we will still be travelling to Spennymoor, Aycliffe etc.

So how will this benefit the residents of Ferryhill?

Roadworks to close eastbound exit at Thinford roundabout for three monthsWork to widen a section of the A688 to the east of Thinford roundabout is set to begin later this month.The scheme, being carried out by Durham County Council, aims to increase capacity at the junction and reduce traffic queues. Widening of the road at this location has been a longstanding aim which is only now possible due to the demolition of the former Thinford Inn.It will also include the creation of a new junction, which will provide a right turn lane from the A688 and access to a new development due to open later in the year.Work will begin on Monday, 16 January and is expected to take about three months to complete, during which time the eastbound lane of the A688 will be closed from the roundabout towards Metal Bridge.Businesses normally accessed via this section of the road will remain open, with parking provided in the layby to the east of the A167 southbound carriageway approaching Thinford roundabout.The layby will be closed to other traffic while work is ongoing and will remain closed once the scheme is complete.

A diversion will be in place, taking drivers via the A167 to Rushyford, the A689 to the Sands Hall roundabout at Sedgefield and then the A177 to Tursdale.Several full closures of the A688 will be required towards the end of the works.
