July 22 to 24, 1992Laboratory Diagnosis of Viral InfectionsRochester, MinnesotaThis 3-day workshop for laboratory directors and technologistswho are involved in the processing of specimens and the develop­ment of tests for the rapid and sensitive diagnosis of viral infectionswill feature the following topics: selection and collection of appro­priate specimens for culture for the direct detection of viral antigensby rapid methods; understanding the variables of the rapid shell vialassay for the most sensitive and specific detection of cytomega­lovirus, herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, adenovirus,and influenza virus; assessing methods for the rapid detection ofviruses directly from clinical specimens; examination and interpre­tation of specific immunofluorescence patterns of viral infectedcells; evaluation of the use of serology in clinical virology; and un­derstanding the principles and procedures involved in nucleic aciddetection systems, especially for the diagnosis of enterovirus, hu­man papillomavirus, and parvovirus infections. The program oflectures and laboratory sessions provides a basic course for begin­ners and those with limited experience with the shell vial assay anddiagnostic virology in general.

August 8, 1992Phlebotomy: From the Patient's PerspectiveWashington, DCPhlebotomy is a demanding procedure that necessitates both techni­cal skills and interpersonal abilities and insights. This conferencewill approach phlebotomy from the patient's perspective, focusingon many of the problems faced by' patients and their families­coping with illness, pain, and dying and concerns about transmis­sion of diseases such as hepatitis and human immunodeficiencyvirus and the confidentiality of test results. The needs of specialpatient populations, including pediatric patients and those withAIDS, will also be addressed. Attendees will learn to performspecial collection procedures for bleeding time and blood culturetests, sampling from indwelling catheters, and collections frompediatric patients. Through participation in this conference, phle­botomists (and administrators and supervisors of phlebotomy ser­vices) will gain a better understanding and appreciation of the needsand concerns of patients that will enhance patient care and alleviatejob-related stress.

With use of a case-presentation format, the facultywill review bleeding and thrombotic disorders within the context ofa simple scheme of hemostasis, followed by open question-and­answer sessions. The goal of the seminar is to provide an under­standing of the mechanisms of hemostasis, various screening tests,common hemostatic disorders, limitations in the evaluation ofthrombotic diatheses, and principles of anticoagulant therapy forphysicians in any discipline.
