Deception gains a slight edge over deception detectionwhen the interactions are few in number and are amongstrangers. If you spend enough time with the people youinteract with, they may leak their true intent throughtheir behaviour. However, when interactions areanonymous or infrequent, behavioural cues cannot beread against a background of known behaviour, somore general attributes must be used. Because of thenegative consequences of being detected, people areexpected to be nervous when lying. In response toconcern over appearing nervous, people may exertcontrol, trying to suppress behaviour, with possible sideeffects detectable by the listener such as a planned, rehearsed impression. Lying is also cognitivelydemanding. You must suppress the truth and constructa falsehood that is plausible, then tell it in a convincingway and remember the story. Cognitive load appears toplay the biggest role. When lies are not well-rehearsed,people have to think too hard, and this causes severaleffects, including overcontrol that leads to blinking andfidgeting less and using fewer hand gestures, longerpauses and higher-pitched voices. Of course, ifself-deception is involved, you are less likely to give offthe normal cues of lying that others might perceive.

The author is of the opinion that ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

anyone can become a good liar as long as arehearsal process is involved

lying makes people feel relaxed if they know the liewill not be detected

people show fewer signs of lying if they believe thelies themselves

lies are impossible to detect unless you know aperson well

lying is an almost effortless process for many people

35.

According to the passage, deception becomeseasier than detecting deception when ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

people involved do not know each other well

the person telling lies shows signs of nervousness

the listener is cognitively challenged by thediscussion

people in a conversation do not have commonattributes

the listener has a general view about the peoplethey are interacting with

According to the passage, ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

deceiving people with whom you have problematicrelationships requires more effort

the possible negative results of being caught do notbother people

establishing control over behaviours has side effectsthat cannot be detected by man or machine

lying involves a lot of mental processing leading toobservable side effects

deception requires memorizing a very detailed andelaborate lie

The author’s main purpose is to ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

give practical advice to people who are required todetect deception as part of their occupations

describe the nature, manifestations and mentalaspects of deception

present conflicting views on deception, deceptiondetection and self-deception

39. - 42. soruları aşağıdaki parçaya görecevaplayınız.

A behavioural pattern is considered to be innate whenit is essential for survival and already present at birth,as it is predetermined by the genetic make-up of theorganism. A reflex is the simplest form of an innatebehaviour. It is a programmed reaction to an outsidestimulus that is carried out unconsciously. For example, the eyelids close automatically as soon as a draft of airstimulates the surface of the eye and the pupils of a catwill contract as soon as it looks into bright light. Theseare reflexes that an organism does not have to learn;they are referred to as unconditioned reflexes. Anunconditioned reflex is always an unconsciousresponse, and therefore it is impossible to suppress itat will. Such a reflex always requires a stimulus thattriggers a certain behaviour. Many unconditionedreflexes exist in order to protect the organism, forexample coughing, nausea, or the draw back reflex ofthe body part that touches a hot object. Anatomically, a reflex is based on a chain of stimulus and reaction, which is referred to as a reflex arc. A well-knownexample is the knee jerk or patellar reflex in humans, which is triggered by a light hit to the patellar tendon inthe knee. The knee jerk reflex is often used in medicineto test the function of the spinal cord and associatednerves. The real purpose of this reflex is to protecthumans from injury when tripping.

It is understood from the passage that reflexes ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

can cause damage to an organism if they are notstrictly controlled

represent series of behaviours present only inhuman-like organisms

are passed on through an organism’s geneticstructure

are learned by an organism as it struggles to survive

are difficult to differentiate from voluntarymovements

39.

It is clearly stated in the passage that ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

there is no conscious control over unconditionedreflexes

it is useful to suppress certain unconditionedreflexes such as nausea

unconditioned reflexes are learned responses tocertain stimuli

the purpose of some unconditioned reflexes isunknown

unconditioned reflexes are activated even whenthere is no stimulus present

We can understand from the passage thatunconditioned reflexes are behaviours that ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

can frequently be observed in animals but rarely inhumans

display great complexity in both humans andanimals

help an organism to protect itself against outsidedangers

are limited to organs such as the eye and the legs

can vary substantially among individuals in somecircumstances

According to the passage, the knee jerk reflex is ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

necessary to protect an organism from a hot object

a very rare reaction to a physical stimulus

useless in terms of helping a person to survive

used to assess certain anatomic functions

a reaction that indicates a severe spinal cord injury

Relatively few people enjoy the opportunity to travel toother countries. By far the most common form of travelis that by residents of a country within that country.International travel, although given high priority bysegments of the populations of industrialized nations, is still a minority activity. As a very rough guide, weestimate that expenditure worldwide on domestictourism may be worth up to ten times that amount oninternational tourism. Ironically, there are relatively few countries that collect domestic travel and tourismstatistics, while much more information is available oninternational tourism. Why is this? First of all, international travel involves, by definition, the crossingof a frontier. It is therefore easier to observe andmonitor. Domestic tourism involves movement internallyand is therefore more difficult to research. Countriesthat only make use of registration forms at hotels missout on all aspects of domestic tourism that involvestaying in other accommodation establishments or withfriends or relatives. A number of countries do not eventry to measure domestic tourism due to its very nature. For example, in many developing countries, very littledomestic movement involves staying in paidaccommodation, and so it does not compete withdemand from international visitors.

It is directly stated in the passage that ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

according to statistics, people spend much of theirincome on international tourism

spending on international tourism is about one tenthof the amount spent on domestic tourism

the measurement of domestic tourism demandcovers similar areas to that of international demand

domestic and national travel surveys are based onknowledge of the resident population

many countries promote themselves strongly to theirown residents as holiday destinations

43.

According to the passage, the primary challenge ofmeasuring domestic tourism is that ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

there is competition among countries to attracttourists

most people travelling within their own countriescannot afford to stay in hotels

people do not necessarily stay in hotels whentravelling in their own countries

the numbers involved are insignificant to trackaccurately

expenditure statistics are very difficult to collect fromsuppliers of tourism services

It can be inferred from the passage that ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

international tourism statistics are not always basedon reliable data

if there were no border crossings, internationaltourism statistics would be less comprehensive

surveys given to foreign tourists are a useful way ofcollecting information on international tourism

domestic tourism in developing countries willcontinue to increase

developing countries are beginning to place moreimportance on domestic tourism

We can understand from the passage that ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

people from developed countries prefer to travel todeveloping countries

some developing countries think it is too costly tomeasure domestic tourism

only developed countries have the necessaryresources to measure domestic tourism efficiently

it is not worthwhile to produce statistics on domestictourism in some countries

international tourism is becoming a high priority forpeople in developing countries

During the 1990s, the country that was viewed byAmerican leaders and many others in the West as themost important challenge for a transition to democracywas Russia. The Clinton administration emphasizedthat one of its high priorities in foreign policy was thesuccess of the movement to democracy and a marketeconomy in the states of the former Soviet Union, inparticular Russia. A senior official asserted that “helpingthe Russian people to build a free society and marketeconomy is the greatest strategic challenge of ourtime,” and that “Russia was the single most importantforeign policy priority” of the Clinton administration.Russia was by far the largest of the former republics ofthe Soviet Union in both population and land area. Inaddition, its geographical location gave it influence onissues in several regions in which the US wasinterested, and it had greater strategic military capabilitythan any other country except the US. On a deeperlevel, Russia represented what remained of the formergeopolitical and ideological rival of the US. If the statethat had been the core of the superpower which wasconsidered to be the main adversary of the US and ofdemocracy could, within a relatively short time, bechanged into an ideological soul mate of the US, thesymbolic implications would be profound.

According to the passage, the Clintonadministration ----.

Species diversity provides the foundation for individualecosystems and thus is the prerequisite for thefunctioning of the biosphere. It is an immeasurablesource of food and medicinal products, and anirreplaceable resource as a gene pool. Due to theincreasing destruction and pollution of natural habitats,over-fishing and hunting, humans are destroying thebiological multitude of life, and with that, the basis oftheir own well-being. The public is concerned when awell-known species like the tiger, whale, or mountaingorilla becomes endangered; however, the majority ofother cases are hardly ever noticed by the public. Apartfrom the decline of species diversity within habitats, lossof genetic diversity within individual species has alsobeen observed. The destruction of individualpopulations leads to a reduction in genetic regenerationcapacity within a species. For instance, selectivedeforestation reduces the quality of the genetic materialof affected tree species, since only strong, healthy treesare logged and the weaker ones are left behind.Humankind’s intentional or unintentional introduction ofexotic animal and plant species to new habitats playsan important role as well. These so-called “neozicspecies” can become a threat to local species and leadto their complete extinction. For instance, the flightlessKiwi bird in New Zealand is threatened with extinctionby introduced rats and feral cats.

It can be inferred from the passage that thedestruction of species ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

is a process that can lead to disaster for mankind’sfuture prospects

can help man search for better living conditions

is a part of the natural cycle of life and death onEarth

is a necessity in terms of the well-being of the planetand mankind

has been exaggerated and a more balanced viewneeds to be taken

51.

It is stated in the passage that ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

biological diversity is a luxury when people are inneed of food and medical products

hunting and fishing, unlike other environmentallyharmful activities, are necessary for human survival

most cases of biological destruction remainunknown to the public

the public should be more concerned about thepossible loss of species like the tiger

biological diversity is more important for someindividual ecosystems than others

One can understand from the passage thatbiological destruction ----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

affects those who make the wilderness a basis fortheir livelihoods

comes about mostly from natural catastrophesrather than human activity

is most common in temperate areas such as NewZealand, which includes many species

helps local species to reproduce and multiply

impacts the capacity of a species to producegenetically healthy offspring

As it is clearly stated in the passage, the Kiwi bird----.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

was introduced into New Zealand along with animalssuch as rats and feral cats

has become a symbol for conservation throughoutNew Zealand

has never been able to adapt to the harshenvironment of New Zealand

is under threat because of other animals that wereintroduced into its habitat

is a prime example of what is called a “neozicspecies”

Richard: Do you mean that people should watch a movie

for what it is and not for how it is seen to the eye?

Stacy: Yes, that’s exactly what I mean.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

It’s obvious that current technology has contributeda lot to the visual quality of movies.

I suppose it’s more about the content of the moviethan the way it is presented to the audience.

High definition movies are so realistic that it feels asif you were actually taking part in the movie.

But it’s the harmony of different colours in moviesthat make them seem more appealing.

I don’t pay much attention to when a movie wasproduced, but it is the cast that usually captivatesme.

Since the country is about to develop quickly, thePresident is ready to make use of the country’snatural resources and abundant biodiversity and hewill compensate the people for their loss.

The President thinks that no economic growth cansubstitute for the loss of the country’s naturalresources because rapid development would meanthat the destruction of the country is finishing them off.

Although the country seems ready to develop, thePresident is aware that no economic growth couldmake up for the deterioration of the country’s naturalresources and abundant biodiversity.

During thenineteenth and twentieth centuries, there werenumerous developments in mathematical logic.

A)

B)

C)

D)

E)

Aristotle taught many subjects including syllogism,an argument in the form of two premises and aconclusion.

To introduce formal logic to students, it is useful toexplain that logic examines how arguments areconstructed.

Therefore, Aristotle, the Father of Logic, referred toinductive logic as “a passage from individuals touniversals”.

There are several kinds of logic, the most commonof which are deductive and inductive logic.

Nevertheless, Aristotle was the first philosopher toidentify and formalize rules for this branch ofphilosophy.

Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little andsmoking can raise your future risk of heart disease.---- Previous studies have linked exposure toenvironmental pollution to an increased risk ofheart problems, but the two analyses now show thatpoor air quality can lead to a heart attack or strokewithin as little as a few hours after exposure.Scientists found that people exposed to high levelsof pollutants were up to 5% more likely to suffer aheart attack within days of exposure than thosewith lower exposure.

A)

B)

C)

D)

This can be reduced, however, if you exerciseoutside in the fresh air.

Heart disease is reversible if the underlying diseasecan be treated.

But there is another factor that can trigger heartproblems more immediately.

The risks are relatively low for people who “smokesocially” and have lower cholesterol levels.

Strict regulation of pollutants may not only improveair quality but could also become necessary toprotect public health.
