Temple Sinai of Hollywood 3

The rhythm of the Jewish year hasmoments of joy as well as sadness. Ourprayers and celebrations are laden withhighs and lows. Many themes and idealspresent themselves as Holidaysthroughout the course of the year.

The themes of Creation Redemptionand Revelation manifest themselvesbeautifully as follows: Rosh Hashana_-Creation of the world, Passover –Re-demption from slavery and foreshadow-ing complete redemption for the Jewish

people and mankind, and Shavuot- Revelation of God’s teachingsand commandments.

These themes are linked in various ways. The journey from Lib-eration to the time of revelation is observe with anticipation andthe counting of seven weeks(the counting of the Omer).

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel wrote beautifully on revelation:“The nature of revelation, being an event in the realm of the in-

effable is something which words cannot spell, which human lan-guage will never be able to portray. Our categories are notapplicable to that which is both within and beyond the realm ofmatter and mind. In speaking about revelation, the more descrip-tive the terms, the less adequate is the description.

“Revelation is a mystery for which reason has no concepts.“Collecting the memories of the sparks of illuminations we have

perceived, the installments of insight that have been bestowedupon us through the years, we will find it impossible to remain cer-tain of the impossibility of revelation.”

Today is a day of gathering inward, of collecting the insights wehave gained, of appreciating the inner work we have accomplished,of preparing the harvest of our hearts and souls.

The counting of the Omer is the conduit between Passoverand Shavuot, between the opportunities opened to us after be-coming free at Passover and the realization of our potential, be-tween mere functioning and godliness. Shavuot, the giving of theTorah, is the actualization of what we began to understand atPassover. May this journey, for each of us continue to develop indepth and connection, within ourselves, among us, and with theSource of all

PRESIDENT SYLVIA BERMANTemple had a very exciting April,

starting with a special Yom Hashoahprogram, planned by Hillary Josephs, sponsored by Temples Sinai and Solel.Entertainment was provided by theGay Men’s Chorus, and we had aspeaker from the Congregation EtzChaim. It showed us how united thecommunity can be when there is a com-mon interest. I am sure, if you weren’table to attend, that you heard howbeautiful and emotional it was. I know

that both Synagogues hope we are able to do more of these jointcommunity events.

A big thank you to everyone who make the Casino night a suc-cess. Beth Braver and her committee prepared an evening of funand fund raising. This is what your Temple is all about. Workingtogether, growing together. Also in April, the ECE held its Char-acter Brunch, our Cantor did a Broadway Shabbat weekend andyour Temple participated in the Share-A- Meal program. I am soproud of all the volunteers making lives easier.

Now the holidays are behind us and the office starts with theplanning days of summer.

Many of our members escape the heat and take the opportunityto stay near family in other states or cities. It presents challengesthat only you can overcome. Our Synagogue is known for the factthat we have Minyan every morning and night. The summer is adifficult time for the Synagogue and its services. We need you tocome to minyans whenever possible. We have members who cometo us for a yahrzeit and it gets more and more difficult to be ableto have 10 people there in both the morning and the late after-noon during this time of year. Remember, it is a mitzvah to be therefor them. Let me know if you are available.

Just because it is summer doesn’t mean that anything slows downat Temple. This year Tishah B’Av is on July 21st. Stay tuned forupcoming activities. In the meantime, Rosanne and her staff arebusy making sure that you have all the information you are goingto need to be able to pay your dues and purchase your seats for theHigh Holy days - September is just around the corner. I am sureyou feel like I do, how did the year go by so quickly?

I like to end with good news and you should know that a NewJersey man, Robert Leibowitz, went to Disney World wearing atee shirt that read “In Need of a Kidney – O Positive”. Under thenote was his cell number. A guest took a photo of the shirt andposted it on Facebook. He had been on the list for 4 years andknew it was a 7 – 10 year wait. Strangers started calling him andfour potential donors went to New York. One was a perfect match.Richie Sully, from Indiana said “I just saw a father who wanted tospend more time with his kids”. What could be better than that?(www.forward.com, search 1-28-18) This all goes back to com-munities coming together to make great things happen. That’show we started April.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORRosanne Mendelowitz

As we head into the quietersummermonths, it is a good time to take stock ofwhat we have accomplished over the pastyear and what we would like to achieve inthe year ahead. I have seen firsthand thecommitment and dedication that so manyof our members possess to help keep Tem-ple Sinai a vibrant center of our Jewish com-munity. I’m excited to begin another year asExecutive Director and I am confident thatall congregants will see the positive direc-

tion in which wecontinue to grow as a community.Membership Renewal packets should be arriving in homes by

mid-month.We ask that all members re-submit the forms so thatwe can be sure to keep our records current with your personal andcontact information. Your renewal packet will include High HolyDay information, so that you are able to arrange your holiday seat-ing at the same time as your membership.

I would like to encourage all of our members to continue thecommitment to ensure that we have enough attendees for our twice dailyMinyan! Temple Sinai has the enviable distinction of being theonly Conservative synagogue in Hollywood and one of the few inBroward County that has consistently maintained a daily morningand afternoon Minyan. Without a Minyan, you, your fellow con-gregants and that stranger who joins us to recite, cannot honortheir loved ones with the Kaddish. The Minyan is an oasis of peace, quiet, and prayer in the midst of our busy lives. Please make a com-mitment to supporting our daily minyan…and be sure to join usfor breakfast following Minyan!

As we end another Religious School year, we also say goodbyeto our dear friend and valued Temple Sinai staff member, KarenKaye, who will be retiring upon the completion of this school year.We know that you join us in wishing Karen nothing but healthand happiness as she moves into this next phase of her life.

Our hard-working newly-installed Board of Governors andCommittee members are already busy planning for a successful2018-19 year. Be sure to read the weekly email blasts and checkour website for the most up-to-date information on what is hap-pening in our Temple Sinai community.

We look forward to seeing everyone throughout the summerand welcoming everyone back in September. Please be sure tostop by my office when you are in the building to say hello and/orshare what’s on your mind!

Wishing all a Happy, Safe Summer! All the best,

Rosanne

finish our hand-outs. (miniature soaps. lotions, toothpaste/brushes, shampoos, razors, kleenex, etc.)

SOCIAL ACTIONShare-A-Meal

Brighter Times for Share-A-MealThis April 15th Share-a-Meal saw a good group of regulars plus some

who have not helped us in a while. I was really worried about attendancesince the Character Brunch was scheduled for the same time, but thecrew came through.

Those participating were: Our mainstays Steve and Paula Platt; Loisand Mark Nonkin; Audrey and Sam Meline; Paula Greene; BarbaraRosen; Maggie Massillon; Judy and Larry Wiener; Fred Hochsztein;Diane Snyder; the Garber Family--Jonathan, Annie, Shira and Natan;Miriam Rube with sons Jacob and Reuben; Aaron and Shira Greenberg;and Mark and Sara Vogel with daughter Leora. Ben Fireman joined usat the site. Thank you to those who brought eggs.

And a big thank you Paula and Steve who continue to pick up ourcheese, bread and dessert. This feeding was challenging since our go toplace, Entenmann's Thirft is no more. But Steve persevered and found a thrift store on Pembroke Road that is great.

A big note: We desperately need toiletry items in order to give out the grooming bags. Search your house and remember to bringthem home from hotels. You can also purchase a few from the Dollar Stores and help us out that way. We really need the small de-odorants and razors as well as tooth brushes and toothpaste and the usual soap, shampoo and hand creams. Thank you to all those

who support this project. It isthe only consistent communitywide service program that Tem-ple Sinai take part in and hasdone so for over 30 years.

Are you aware that Temple Sinai has the enviable distinction of being the only Conservative synagogue in Hollywood and one of the few in Broward County that has maintained an egalitarian morningand afternoon minyan every day for the past 74 years?

At times, it is a struggle to make a minyan. Please join us when you can. It would be a mitzvah and greatly appreciated.

*Bagels and coffee are provided after the morning service.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR DAILY MINYANMonday - Friday 8:15 a.m.* | Monday - Thursday 5:30 p.m.
