On 3rd & 4th May, 100 speedsolvers of"speedcubers" from all over the countrygathered for Mumbai Summer Open, a na-tional-level competition for the cube.

Organised by 2 teens who are alumnusof Bombay Scottish School-Amay Saxena& Subhankar Panda, the competitionhosted a variety of disciplines of speed-cubing. All the way from the rather trivial2x2 to solving a 5x5 cube, people of all agessolved the cubes in a matter of seconds.Nikhil Mande won Mumbai SummerOpen ‘14 with an average of 15.13 seconds.Pradyut Sekhsaria finished second (16.08)

& Gaurav Taneja finished third (16.12).Mumbai Summer Open saw people of

all ages, solving the puzzle and sharingtheir passion for the sport. It was affiliatedto the World Cube Association which is thealpha body for the organization and exe-cution of competitive speedcubing.

What are the unique challenges commonly faced by or-ganizations in this field of work?The challenges are a) Convincing the client the extent of damage in the struc-ture.b) The repair work to be carried out in the right method-ology which requires time and the cost is high. It is generally observed that many older buildings &structures are in better shape than many new buildings.What could be the reasons for this?Knowledge of construction/shuttering – formwork/false-work/concrete cover/tying of steel bars/making of con-crete/ placing / compacting/quality of the sand/givingenough time for curing & settlements/before next se-quence is done - in other words strict supervision will en-sure the work will last a hundred years.

What professional advise would you have for flat, bun-galow and owners of other structures?Look after the building by crack filling and painting every4th year and do not allow 'Cowboy Contractors' to do evencrack filling and painting unless it is supervised by some-one who has some kind of technical experience/otherwiseit will be an eyewash/various agencies are puncturing

holes in to the external structure of the building for vari-ous things like electrical work/cabling telephone wires etc.There are people who are giving plumbers/ painters/inte-rior decorators/and any person is being engaged to doplaster work at a low price - and these same persons arealso doing structural repairs who have no knowledge ofrepairs.

How can a client availing of the services of a civil con-tractor identify whether he is being cheated or not?The client will need to have a close look at the civil contac-tors profile -1. How long has the contractor being doing work - this hasto be verified by the client – by seeing written testimonyfrom satisfied persons after a period of time - say 7 to 10year period.2. Go & see the works done over a MINIMUM 7 to 10 yearperiod - that’s a minimum - (we need to keep in mind inmeeting the residents of the building – some have issueswith the pervious issues with persons being committeemembers) - that has to be viewed too.3. In other words stringent checks have to be done – re-member the clients money is going down the drain if theclient does not do his homework - only then the contrac-tors need to be put on a chart and check out their rates orprices.

Are any permissions required to be secured before dif-ferent types of repair and restoration work are under-taken by a property owner?No permission is required if you are undertaking plasterand painting work - however the BMC requires a struc-tural engineer who has a BMC licence - if structural workis being carried out and then a stability certificate will begiven if the structural engineer is supervising the work.Which is mandatory after 25 years.

When we think seafood in Mumbai, our mind automaticallywanders to those big shot fine dining restaurants which gen-erally cost a bomb. So when I walked into Nothin Fishy AboutIt!, I was pleasantly surprised, because you don’t really find agood fast food joint these days which primarily serves fish. Itis a neat little joint in the ever increasing cluster of food jointson Carter Road.

Along with the cleverly designed logo and catchy name, theinteriors too were beautifully put together. The menu was writ-ten on the t-shirts of figurines drawn on the wall with paintand felt pens. The rest of the counter too was very efficientlydesigned with wooden blocks.

The restaurant offered a plethora of items ranging fromgrilled fish to a number of Maharashtrian specialties. The por-tions were quite large though, too large even for some. We or-dered four dishes, the first being a Malai Chicken Tikka roll,which was my least favourite. It had a delicious creamy fillingwith a lot of soft chicken pieces. The only reason I said that thisis my least favourite dish is because I just really liked the oth-ers.

The second dish was called Grilled Fish Tikka which was arich red in colour and in flavour. It was spicy, but not too spicy.Topped off with a bit of lime and dipped in some green chutneymade it an explosion of contrasting flavors. The fish was softand absolutely fresh. The oener comes from a family that sup-plies fresh fish to famous hotels from trawlers, so her fish is al-ways fresh.

Then came the Kung Pao Potatoes, which was the only veg-etarian dish that we ordered. It too had a distinct red colour likethe previous dish, but contrary to the previous dish, it had amore crispy texture and a more tangy taste. All in all, it was

pretty much the most succulent portion of potatoesthat I had had in a while.

Lastly, we had a portion of Butter Garlic Prawnsalong with some Garlic Bread. The gravy went per-fectly with the fresh and juicy pieces of prawn. Thepresentation was beautiful too. The garlic breadalong with the gravy tasted heavenly. This was my

absolute favourite dish amongst the four that I gotto taste.The owner of the joint, Sanyukta Dhangar Lal comes

from a P.R. background, and has established what many oth-ers today wish to, to open their own restaurant. She, with a littlehelp from her husband, has managed to open this wonderfullittle fast food restaurant serving the most beautiful fish. Fastfood, she rightly claims, is the food of today, which is why sheopted for fast food. And what better place to open a restaurantin than on Carter Road?

When we first entered, there weren’t many customers. Infact, we were the only ones there. But as the hours piled up, sodid the number of customers, and very soon the place was allbut packed. The food came quite quickly in neat boxes made offoil and the service was impeccable. The whole experience washeightened by the social nature of the owner and her husband,who personally greeted all their customers.

Basically, Nothin Fishy About It! is pretty much an all-rounder in terms of the food, pricing as well as the interiors. Ithas a homely atmosphere which makes you want to visit againand again, which is probably why the joint has gained thismuch popularity in its teething period itself, after all, it’s butfifteen days old. Eating here has been a lovely experience and Iwould definitely recommend it to all those reading this article.
