Wounded, Injured and Ill Programs at NMC

It’s hard to believe thatthis May marks the twoyear anniversary of theNeighborhood Exchange. This monthly food bank distribution site atthe ASYMCA in Murphy Canyon has become a trusted source for mili-tary families to help stretch their food budget. Since its start in May2009, volunteers have helped load 6,462 bags of food for 3,660 fami-lies! Volunteers make the Neighborhood Exchange happen.

While there are so many volunteers to thank, we want to tell you abouttwo that exemplify the ASYMCA’s Attitude of Gratitude. Rory O’Neilland Bryan Wiggins have volunteered at the Neighborhood Exchange fortwo years. They step right in where they are needed; no job is too bigor too hot. During school breaks their daughter Susanna also comes tovolunteer. Susanna has received the President’s Volunteer Service Award three times and is working on a fourth. Bryan is a retired NavyCaptain helicopter pilot and son of a Navy Dad. Rory is a Senior Legal Analyst at a local law firm. We thank them for the spirit they demon-strate in their untiring service to military families.

April was a very busy month at Naval Medical Center. The Armed Services YMCA partnered with American SoldierNetwork in arranging for a visit by the cast of “Justified”,an FX hit television show. The cast viewed an episodewith the injured service members, and then hung aroundfor a Q & A session, autographs, and a photo opportunity!Later that month, we took our 3rd trip to a taping of “ThePrice is Right”. Our group of thirteen wounded warriors

and their guests attended with the hopes of becoming acontestant. At the end of the show, our deservingwounded warriors were given a backstage pass to meetDrew Carey himself!
