Copyright Responsibilities for Worship Booklets,

Podcasts and Live Streaming

In this time of COVID-19 many parishes are creating podcasts or live streaming private

Masses. Please be sure to comply with copyright laws when this is done. This ensures that

composers are compensated for the use of their materials.

Whether text and/or music are copyrighted or in the public domain, that information can be

found at the bottom of the hymn. Copyrighted music or text needs permission to be used.

Public domain material can safely be reproduced/reprinted.

Here is an example of a hymn (O Sons and Daughters) that is in the public domain. Notice

that you do not see the “Copyright” word or symbol (©). You should still include this

information when using the hymn, but you may use it without a copyright license.

In this example (Like a Shepherd), both the text and music are copyrighted. You need to

include all information regarding the music and text, and also need permission to use either or

both.

Sometimes music and text are covered separately. In this example (When Love Is Found), the

text is copyrighted, but the melody is not. You may find the opposite to be true for some other

hymns.

Much of what is printed in parish hymnals and song books is covered for reproduction under

OneLicense.net. Here is what was temporarily provided at no charge for parishes (know that

this policy expired on Wednesday, April 16):

https://news.onelicense.net/2020/04/13/looking-ahead-licensing-options-for-gratis-accounts-

after-april-15/.

OneLicense.net provides licenses for publishing music for worship booklets, and you can add-

on licensing for podcasts/streaming, as well as other uses. There is a one-time-use license, as

well as year-long subscriptions. Here is a link to see their license options and costs.

https://www.onelicense.net/options-and-prices

If a piece of music is not covered under OneLicense you may need to contact a different

company for permission. Use the copyright information under the music to know which

company to contact.

NOTICES__________________________________ ►►CONCERNING REQUESTS FOR HELP WITH

THOSE WHO MAY BE DEMONICALLY POSSESSED

OR OPPRESSED. If you are dealing with someone who is seeking help with what they believe to be demonic possession or oppression, you can have them contact the Chancery Office. They should do so by phone, 215-587-4538 during office hours, mail, or e-mail, [email protected].

Please do NOT go directly to those priests involved in this ministry. The Chancery Office serves as a kind of buffer for them.

The Chancery Office will send the person an extensive questionnaire that will help determine what further attention may be needed. Please note that if the person does not reside in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, they will have to contact their own diocese. It isn’t canonically or realistically possible for our men to assist those in other dioceses.

☀☀SUMMER ASSISTANCE - Throughout the year and especially during the summer months, the Office for Clergy receives requests for Mass coverage from pastors. A number of retired priests have been able to offer assistance for varying periods of time, and this has been extremely helpful, particularly in parishes where there is only one priest assigned. The Office for Clergy is grateful to all those retired priests who currently offer ongoing or occasional assistance to parishes or who have assisted in the past. Your generosity is a tremendous support to our brother priests.

If you are not currently assisting in a parish and would like to make yourself available, either during the summer months or on an occasional basis throughout the year, the Office for Clergy would be happy to identify parishes where you could be of assistance. There are many parishes that would benefit from the assistance of a retired priest and your consideration of this need is greatly appreciated. If any priest can assist in a parish this summer, please contact the Office for Clergy at 215-587-4532 to advise us of dates you would be available. Pastors who anticipate difficulty in arranging coverage are also invited to contact the Office for Clergy.

PERMANENT DEACONS DEACON MICHAEL PASCARELLA, JR.

_ ASSOCIATE TO THE VICAR FOR CLERGY FOR PERMANENT DEACONS

A Changed World

By Deacon Jack Hasson Assistant to the Associate to the Vicar for Clergy

One of the ministries of the Deacon, as well as all the clergy is visiting the sick in their homes and hospital. A ministry that I regularly and happily enjoy. A ministry I share with Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion as we perform this Corporal Work of Mercy. In my orientation for new Extraordinary Ministers we discuss the fact that life has changed for the people we visit and their loved ones. These changes take many forms; a beautiful change as couple receive the gift of a newborn child. The good news that a medical procedure has cured an illness or a condition and others where life changed and a new chapter in the person pilgrimage through life has begun. Over the past several months we have witnessed a global event that has and will continue to change the way we live and work for many years to come. Despite the limited social interactions with others, there appears to be a growing awareness of our interdependence with each other. More appreciation of service workers, doctors, nurses and health care workers. We have witnessed within the faithful a growing commitment to prayer and worship. The live streamed Chrism Mass by the Archdiocese had over 37,000 households log on to view the Mass, a new liturgical experience for many. Global devotions and prayer services from around the world imploring God for His intervention and guidance. A growing recognition of our dependence on the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We recently celebrated the Sacred Triduum of our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection and how God through His Son changed the world. Saving man from the effects of sin and death. Giving men and women hope. A hope realized through our relationship with Jesus. A hope that God will grant relief from this current scourge.

Please remember in your prayers the relatives of our brother priests and deacons who have died.

Priests can access most of these forms on the Priest’s Portal under the documents tab.

REMINDER ABOUT THE DEATH OF A DEACON OR A DEACON’S WIFE In the event of the death of a deacon or spouse, families should notify the Office for Clergy as soon as possible, and before final funeral arrangements are made. As the funeral of a deacon is an Archdiocesan event, the music selection needs to be reviewed by the Office for Divine Worship. This should be done by having the parish music director contact the Office for Divine Worship directly. Also, when possible, the Archbishop would prefer to be the principal celebrant at the funeral of a deacon or spouse of a deacon. In his absence, an auxiliary bishop may be the principal celebrant, based on availability. Any questions should be directed to Deacon Michael Pascarella at [email protected].

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION The list of approved spiritual directors has been revised. Please contact Deacon Michael Pascarella for more information about finding an approved spiritual director.

The Institute of Christian Formation

Mission Statement

Students are mentored to deepen their understanding of the Gifts of Baptism, Confirmation and the

Eucharist. In this way, they come to fully know their dignity as Christians, the broad dimensions of

the Catholic faith, the conscious participation in the Sacred Liturgy, the call to live and witness to a

moral life, and an interior communion with Christ.

The academic modules of the program focus on each of these essential areas of Christian formation.

The Institute for Christian Formation moves beyond an understanding of the faith to include, also,

with a firm grasp of the faith, the orientation of all knowledge to an encounter with the living Christ.

This encounter prospers the Christian life in the love and service of God and of neighbor.

MEMORANDUM

TO: All Priests

FROM: Catholic Human Services

Archdiocese of Philadelphia

DATE: May 2020

RE: Novo Nordisk: Cities Changing Diabetes

The information below is regarding Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare company working to

defeat diabetes and other serious chronic conditions. Catholic Human Services recently became

involved with the national effort “Cities Changing Diabetes.” Please consider sharing this

information broadly with others.

“Cities are on the front line for diabetes. Two-thirds of people with diabetes globally live in

cities. And, the highest growth in diabetes is expected to happen in urban settings.

In collaboration with cities around the world, we are helping communities understand their

unique diabetes challenges, identify areas and populations at greatest risk, and design and

implement targeted solutions.

In November 2019, we launched the program in Philadelphia, also in collaboration with

community leaders from public and private sectors to change the trajectory of diabetes there.”
