Dear Brothers and Sisters,In his 1905 inaugural ad-

dress Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro, the founder of the Order Sons of Italy in America, said, “We must educate ourselves and insist that our children receive the best education possible.”

To date the Order Sons of Italy in America has given over $50 million in scholarships to young deserving students for their scholastic achievements, leadership, and community ser-vice, thanks to the Sons of Italy Foundation, the Grand Lodges, Filial Lodges, and individual do-nors. Dr. Sellaro, thank you for guiding us on the right course.

On May 20, 2012, the Chari-table and Educational Trust of the Grand Lodge of Mas-sachusetts sponsored the 57th

Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon and honored 39 outstanding students for their academic achievements. Thank you to Scholarship Commission Chairman Donna Giuliani and her Commission members for a wonderful day.

On May 23, the Sons of Italy Foundation held its 24th Annual National Education & Leader-ship Awards (NELA) Gala. This year, the Foundation honored ten distinguished scholarship recipients in addition to confer-ring several awards.

The Excellence in Business Award was given to Mr. Claudio Bozzo, President of the Medi-terranean Shipping Company. Born and educated in Genoa, Italy, he was hired by the Medi-terranean Shipping Co. (MSC) in New York as a clerk. After 11 years managing most of the company’s departments, he be-came President in 2005.

The Humanitarian Award went to Mr. Armand E. Sabitoni, General Secretary-Treasurer of the Laborer’s International

Union of North America. He joined the organization in 1969 and has since held various offi ces. In 2001 he was elected to the office of General Sec-retary-Treasurer, the second highest position in the Interna-tional Union, which represents over 550,000 members.

The Courage & Patriotism Award went to General Peter Pace, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.). General Pace graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1967 and later, the National War Col-lege. He was the fi rst Marine to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the principal military advisor to the President and the Secretary of Defense. General Pace has also received the Presidential Medal of Free-dom, the highest civilian honor.

The Lifetime Achievement Award for Public Service went to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. A graduate of Wellesley College and Yale Law School, she served as the fi rst lady of Arkansas for 12 years before serving as the fi rst lady of the United States for 8 years. In 2000, she became the fi rst-fi rst lady ever elected to the U.S. Senate, and the fi rst female Senator elected in New York. In January 2009 she was sworn in as the 67th United States Secre-tary of State.

With over 800 members and guests in attendance at the NELA Gala, it was a night that brought great joy for our Italian heritage.

If you missed the Commission for Social Justice’s 29th Annual Law and Justice Day Breakfast, you missed one of the best events they have hosted. The pride of being an Italian Ameri-can could be seen on the faces of each of the 235 members and guests in attendance that morn-ing. Chairman Al DeNapoli and

his Commission put together a program that made every member thankful for our Italian heritage.

Our 98th Annual State Con-vention will be held on Satur-day, June 16 at the Holiday Inn in Mansfi eld, MA. It is impera-tive that all delegates attend this convention, as there will be some major decisions that must be voted on.

Please don’t miss our first family outing in a number of years, a Family Picnic on Sat-urday, July 8 at the Salisbury Beach Reservation. This will be a great outing for you to spend with your children or grand-children and show them what the Sons of Italy is all about. Call the Grand Lodge to reserve your tickets.

Our annual Lobsterfest will be held at the Hingham Sons of Italy on Saturday, August 4. As always, the menu includes lobster, steak, clam chowder, corn on the cob, watermelon, and lots of laughs with your fellow members. Call the Grand Lodge for tickets.

On Saturday, September 29, we will hold our Italian Heritage Month Kickoff Dinner Dance at the Watertown Sons of Italy featuring great food and enter-tainment. Tickets are available through the Grand Lodge for $35.00 per person.

As always, we ask that you continue to keep the Grand Lodge informed of any function you are having so that we may join you and your members.

Kathy and I look forward to seeing all of the delegates in Mansfi eld on June 16 at the Convention. To all our Brothers and Sisters, we hope you have a great summer. May God Bless you all, and bless our service men and women overseas pro-tecting our freedom.

May 6, 2012, Law and Justice Day Breakfast

Dear President DiStefano:

I want to formally extend my thanks to you, the Commission for Social Justice, and entire membership of the Order Sons of Italy Grand Lodge of Massachusetts for bestowing the Law Enforcement Award on me last Sunday in Woburn. I was humbled by the ceremony and particularly honored to be recognized together with the other highly distinguished and worthy award recipients of the day. My wife Karri, mother Jeanne and colleagues from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Offi ce all thoroughly enjoyed the morning and were highly impressed with the spirit and enthusiasm of the Sons of Italy members and guests. Importantly, the day’s event gave me an opportunity to refl ect upon the good fortune and privilege of being both American and enjoying a rich Italian family heritage. I will display my award plaque proudly, and wear my Italian-American fl ag lapel pin with equal delight.

Warmly,

Michael Fabbri77 Shore Road

The Organization & Education Commission of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts presented its third Education Workshop on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Braintree Sons of Italy in Brain-tree, Massachusetts.

R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s f r o m the Worcester Lodge #168, Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 (Brockton), North Adams Lodge #704, Piave Fiume Lodge #1035 (Watertown), Ambrose D. Cedrone Lodge #1069 (Arlington), Norwood Italian Lodge #1235, Stella Del Nord Lodge #1436 (Quincy), Braintree Ladies Lodge #1422, G. Marconi Lodge #1620 (Lee), South Shore Men’s Lodge #1850 (Hingham), Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge #2183 (Wilmington), Greater Boston Renaissance Lodge #2416, and Walpole/Foxboro Lodge #2641 were in attendance.

Organization and Education Commission Chairman Louis Floriani welcomed everyone to the third workshop that the Commission has presented. State President James DiSte-fano spoke on the history and origins of our Order. He recalled how Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro and his compatriots struggled to make this Order a reality in 1905. At one point during his inaugural speech, Dr. Sellaro stated: “I have a dream, and hope that someday, even if it takes a hundred more years before we are fully accepted, our children and their children’s children, even if they carry a single drop of Italian blood will be able and proud to continue to carry on our traditions, our cul-ture and our language. It is up to us, and what we do today!”

Sta te Trustee Stephen Cozzaglio explained what the Organization & Education Com-mission does and the impor-tance of staying updated on changes that have been made. The Ritual for the Installation of Offi cers, President’s Handbook, and Membership Handbook are available online via the Grand Lodge website. Visit http://osiama.org/commissions and select “Organization and Edu-cation Commission” to access these materials.

It was brought to the atten-tion of the attendees the impor-tant role of the State Deputy. As noted in our by-laws in M.L. Article 35: “The State Deputy is the representative of the State President and the State Council to the Lodges where he/she is assigned. He/she cannot be assigned as a State Deputy for the Lodge of which he/she is a member. He/she remains in offi ce until his/her successor is appointed.” There are additional points of information included in the article; the final one states that at least once every three months, a detailed report of every installation ceremony, and of every initiation in his/her district, and reports on what he/she observes of impor-tance during his/her visits and by the Lodges on these matters, a report that should be sent to the State Council.

State Second Vice President Antonio Sestito spoke on the rules governing Parliamentary Procedures and their impor-tance within our Order.

The “Duties of the Lodge Offi -cers” handout was read in detail by Brother Stephen Cozzaglio and Sister Dorothy Berlandi. After each offi ce was read there was a question and answer period. The duties of the lodge

officers are very explicit and veering from the instructions only creates problems. It is also important to know that the books of a Lodge should be au-dited quarterly by the Trustees.

Brother David Covucci and his committee have been work-ing on a special project called OSIA Comunita: Italian-Ameri-cans helping Italian-Americans. This is a very ambitious project, but it will enable members to help each other and provide help where needed in areas such as family assistance, fi nd-ing a job, fi nancial advice, and special projects. It will build a community where we all help one another. This project is in its early stages and as it devel-ops we anticipate a stronger Italian-American community, improved quality of life for Ital-ian-Americans, incentives for Italian-Americans to join a fi lial Lodges and additional revenues for the Grand Lodge. Informa-tion will be made available via our Sons of Italy News and cor-respondence.

Brother Covucci, also a Ben-efi t Insurance Commissioner, spoke on the benefi ts that are made available by our Ben-efi t Insurance Commission. He noted that if any lodge needs additional information the Com-mission is willing to attend lodge meetings to discuss their needs.

State Trustee Michelle Ber-toldi and Sister Marisa Ranalli spoke about one of Italy’s oldest and most celebrated legends, the story of La Befana. Sister Bertoldi read the article in Ital-ian and Sister Ranalli read the English version.

A very delicious collation was served by Fasano’s Cater-ing, which certainly helped to make our day. Many thanks to Fasano’s Catering for provid-ing the wonderful luncheon.

Sister Berlandi spoke about the Italian-American Recipi-ents of the Medal of Honor. It is interesting to note that as far back as the Civil War, U.S. Army Colonel Luig i Palma DiCesnola from Riva-rola, Italy received this presti-gious award. There are twenty-fi ve Italian-American Medal of Honor recipients starting with the Civil War and continuing to the present War in Afghanistan.

S ta t e T rus tee Char l es DeStefano, who also serves as Junior Division President, reported on the various Junior Lodges and the plan to add more lodges in the not too dis-tant future. There were many questions asked during this section and Brother DeStefano answered them while also giving suggestions.

Brother DeStefano and Sister Berlandi then read the very stirring composition by Angelo Bianchi, Esq., “I am an Italian-American.”

The Commission Chairman Louis Floriani thanked every-one who attended and made this a very successful seminar. The fi nal seminar was on June 2, 2012 hosted by the Sea-coast Area Lodge # 2303 at the Portsmouth Public Library, 175 Parrot Avenue, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This final seminar was geared toward Districts 6 and 7, but members from any district were welcome to attend.

*Fillet of fl ounder can be used in place of grey sole fi llet.Cook rice according to directions on the package. Set aside. Peel shrimp and place in a bowl with water and set aside.Crush crackers thoroughly. Add softened butter or margarine

and work it into crushed crackers. Set aside.Drain shrimp. On a cutting board, cut up each shrimp into

half-inch portions and set aside.Line bottom of a baking casserole dish lightly with mayonnaise.

Spread cooked rice over bottom of casserole.Wash out the grey sole fi llet and drain. Using one fi llet at a time,

spread some cracker stuffi ng mixture in center portion of fi llet. Add shrimp portions over the stuffi ng. Starting at narrow edge of fi llet, roll the fi llet carefully toward the wider end to create the stuffed roll. Continue stuffi ng remaining fi llet. Place each rolled fi llet, side by side, over rice in baking dish. With butter knife, spread some mayonnaise lightly over each fi llet roll. Sprinkle some cracker mixture over them and top each roll with 1/8 teaspoon of butter or margarine.

In a cup, mix three tablespoons of white wine in one-half cup of water or clam juice. Spread mixture over rice and rolled fi llet.

Place casserole dish in a preheated 375°F oven to bake for fi fteen or twenty minutes. Then remove baking dish from oven. Additional water or clam juice can be added to casserole if needed. Return to oven to bake until tops of fi llet brown lightly and rolled fi llet is fork tender (approx. fi ve to eight minutes).

Note: Watching my elders become creative with foods through the years encouraged me to do the same in my home. This recipe resulted from my curiosity to prepare something different for my family with rice and grey sole fi llet. During the summer months, I prepare and bake this recipe in a throwaway aluminum baking dish over low heat on my gas grill.

LODGE NEWS

Boston’s own 1955 World Welterweight Title Champ Tony DeMarco told his story to a spellbound group of about 50 members and guests of the Winthrop Mixed Lodge #2057. The Tuesday, April 24 meeting was open to the public.

Inside the Fireside Room at the Winthrop Elks Lodge, the “Boston Bomber,” with help fro m his wife Dorothy, showed an interesting documentary of his climb from being “the little kid with the big punch” to Welter-weight Champion of the World. Tony then discussed details from his book Nardo: Memoir of a Boxing Champion, entertained questions from the audience, and autographed copies of his book.

The son of Sicilian immigrants Vincent and Giacomina, Tony DeMarco was born Leonardo Liotta in 1932 in the North End of Boston. He grew up there working in his father’s thriving shoe repair shop and responded to his mother’s calls of “Naaardo” from the window of their fi rst fl oor apartment.

DeMarco started boxing when he was 11 and was a product of the Boys’ Club of Boston and the Parks Department where he was a very active combat-ant. When he graduated to full amateur status, he participated in only a few fi ghts. In his fi rst professional fi ght, he knocked out Mestor Jones in the fi rst round. He was just 16 at the time and had “borrowed” his friend Tony DeMarco’s birth certificate to qualify for the 18-year age requirement to fight as a professional box-er. He came to be known as “The Flame and Fury of Fleet Street.”

Famous for his left hook and in a style reminiscent of Jake LaMotta, Tony went on to beat the likes of Kid Gavilan, Chico Vejar, Don Jordan, Paddy DeMarco, Teddy “Red Top” Davis, Vince Martinez, Arthur Persely, George Araujo, Johnny

Cesario, Carlos Chavez, Chris-tian Christensen, Terry Young, Jackie O’Brien, George Monroe, and Gaspar Ortega. At age 23, he won the Welterweight title on April 1, 1955, by knocking out Johnny Saxton in the 14th round before a sold out house at the Boston Garden.

A legendary puncher and now Hall of Famer, Tony DeMarco is best remembered for two great fi ghts in which he was defeated. Tony’s title defense against onion farmer Carmen Basilio, televised on June 10, 1955, will not be forgotten by boxing fans. The two battled with unequaled fury. The fi ght was decided by a 12th-round TKO when Basilio came back from the brink of destruction to prevail in the “fi ght of the decade.” Tony commented that he personally felt that the ref-eree called an end to the fi ght too soon.

DeMarco rebounded with a one-round demolition of Chico Vejar. However, in an-other 12-round ring classic on

November 30, 1955, before 13,373 fans crowded into the Boston Garden, DeMarco failed in a bid to win the title back from Basilio.

A very affable man, Tony re-counted the camaraderie that he shared with his old friends from the North End and the fi ghters like Rocky Marciano. “All the fi ghters had a softball team,” he said. “We were — and still are — close to each other and have great respect for each other,” DeMarco noted. DeMarco also encouraged sup-port for youth organizations like the Boys’ Club that helped him “stay out of trouble ... most of the time.”

DeMarco fought in 71 profes-sional fi ghts and fought eight World Champions. He holds the record for the most fi ghts and most sellouts at the Boston Gar-den. Tony is a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Offi cial Italian American Hall of Fame in Chicago. “Tony DeMarco Way” in Boston is named after him.

Dr. Antonucci’s message to the recipients was simple: re-member that your parents have worked hard and are proud of what you have accomplished. Continue on; college is hard work, but remember to have fun.

The Charitable and Edu-cational Trust and Scholar-ship Commission extend their thanks to everyone who worked hard to make this 57th Annual Scholarship Awards Program a success.

The Winthrop Ladies Lodge #2071 held a very informative meeting this past May. Our guests were from the Massachusetts Senior Action Council (MSAC), who came to share information about the organization and the strong, meaningful role they play in addressing senior issues, including the legislative push to hold the line on the MBTA fare increases. Because of proposed state budget cuts that directly affect our seniors, the MSAC has their work cut out for them this year with petition drives and promoting the “Five immediate ways to fi ll the MBTA’s $161 million budget defi cit” without cuts and fare hikes. These fi ve fast fi xes proposed represent a savings of $224.6 million.

Presenter Pam Edwards, Community Organizer, explained that the major cuts to the state-wide senior lunch programs have been stopped. She emphasized that it is community awareness and stepping up to the plate that makes things happen. The MSAC continues to stand up and be heard by working with our state legislators across Massachusetts on a daily basis to gain support.

Pam said, “the fi ght is not over! We have until July 1st to stop the MBTA Board’s proposal that targets seniors, people with disabilities and students.” She noted that an intervention and a moratorium on implementing the proposed solutions are needed until we have a real fi x for statewide public transit. A bonus sav-ings will be found in removing the Big Dig debt. She urged people to call their legislators at 617-722-2000.

Also in attendance was long-time MSAC member Kiki Chaiton, who spoke on the work being done on behalf of prescription and medical needs for our seniors. Barbara Mann, MSAC State Mem-bership Chair, addressed the need for more senior action groups throughout Massachusetts, with membership being the key to getting things done.

They all agreed that having Winthrop’s own Robert DeLeo, Speaker of the House, on board in support of seeking ways to help the MBTA hold the line was great. Lodge President Dottie D’Onofrio thanked the ladies for an informative meeting and also thanked Barbara Bishop, a long-time friend of the Lodge, who videotaped the meeting.

ors of the lodge. We welcomed our new sister, Kathleen Per-gola. During April’s meeting, we pinned sister member Ann Mannetta. Like a tree, our friendships and loyalty to the lodge and the OSIA have stood the test of time. After a brief business meeting we settled down for our pizza party and entertainment.

Mrs. Drinkwater is a feisty, stylish, engaging character that takes us back to a bygone era and the humorous side of our Italian heritage. Her skits are fi ctionalized but she bases many from the years she grew up at her grandmother Josie’s

knee. Laura Bellusci, the tal-ent behind Mrs. Drinkwater, grew up in a close-knit Italian-American family in East Boston. She attended Mt. Holyoke Col-lege and chose to pursue a ca-reer in teaching. Laura speaks Italian and has traveled exten-sively throughout Italy and now lives in Greenfi eld, Massachu-setts with her dog Bella Rosa. President of the Lodge Dottie D’Onofrio and member Marilyn participated in the ‘Leafy Lawn Cemetery’ skit that had the group in stitches.

At the May meeting on Tues-day, May 15, the lodge hosted the Massachusetts Senior Ac-tion Council who shared in-formation about the ongoing efforts around the MBTA and the Ride. This year they are cel-ebrating 30 years dedicated to seniors and action items in sup-port of our seniors. The meeting was be open to everyone and will began at 3:30 PM.

For the Lodge’s June meeting, the members are planning the annual Awards program, during which a scholarship recipient will be honored. The Lodge will also recognize this year’s “In Recognition and Appreciation Award,” which will be presented to Winthrop Fire Chief Paul Fla-nagan for his years of service to the community and support of our ladies Lodge.
