The Oak Island BeachPreservation Society has pur-chased and placed Be a BeachLover signs along the beachaccesses to help promote aware-ness of beach preservation andto aid in eliminating safety haz-ards on our beaches.Refrigerator magnets replicat-ing the signs have been distrib-uted for placement in beachrental properties. The Be aBeach Lover initiative's pur-pose is to encourage beachusers to participate in keepingour dunes intact; to make surethat beach equipment will notimpede sea turtles that comeashore to nest; and also tomake the beach a safe place forall.

The OKI Beach PreservationSociety has many ongoing proj-ects that require expenditures. An annual wine tasting fundraiser is held each April to off-set project costs.

The most recent event washeld on April 16 at Island WayRestaurant; this was the 12thsuch event. The Societydepends on local businessesand the generosity of support-ers to make this event a suc-cess. Local restaurants donate

food for the event. Attendeesenjoyed a beautiful view, won-derful wines, great food andinteresting auction items.Businesses and many privatecitizens donated many items fora silent auction.

Strong community participa-tion resulted in a great success. This year, with ticket sales andsilent auction profits, approxi-mately $8,000 was raised.

This event also includes a veryimportant award. The OKIBeach Preservation Societyrecognizes that there are many, many people in our communitywho go above and beyond tohelp preserve our unique envi-ronment. Each year the honorof Beach Preservationist of theYear is awarded to such a per-son. We were proud to recog-nize Mary Ellen Rogers as our2011 Beach Preservationist ofthe Year.
