DESCRIPTION
May Day on May 1 is an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival and usually a public holiday; it is also a traditional spring holiday in many cultures.
ORIGIN
May day basically originated in the late nineteenth centaury because of the worker class were struggling to get an eight hour work day due to the working conditions.
LOCATION
May day is mostly celebrated in Ireland, Cuba, and the Soviet Union. The biggest celebration was in Russia topping two million people.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION
This holiday is a Christian holiday and it is to celebrate the mother of Jesus and it is to make the holiday more subtle.
SYMBOLS
The symbols for May Day are Flowers, May baskets, Jack in the green, and May dolls. These symbols celebrate the holiday and the middle of spring.
TRADITIONS
The people who celebrate May Day use ribbons, garlands, flowers, wreaths, and other decorations to celebrate May day. They also dance and sing around a circle tying ropes around a pole.
FUN FACT
In pre-Christian times, May 1 was seen as the first day of summer. I found this fact to be interesting because pre Christians think that it is the first day of summer but really it is June the 21st.
