Have you ever looked at the sun? Yes, I know it’s not a good idea to stare at the sun. Apart from watching a sunrise or sunset, looking directly at the sun can cause damage our eyesight. However, whenever I’m outside on a sunny day, working in the garden or around the flowers, I will lift up my head towards our glowing orb of light that is warming my skin. Sometimes, I will look up at the sun from our boat when I am fishing with my brother in Wisconsin. Sunshine is not so good for fishing. Yes, it’s very pleasant to be out on the water, on a calm lake, when the sun is shining, but it’s not too helpful if you want to catch fish. So, in the lull between casts, I will glance up at the dazzling sun

every once and a while. The image of the sun glowing brightly in the

sky came to mind as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord this Sunday. The sun shines very brightly and intensely, high in the clear, blue sky. Nothing can compare to its glow, radiance, and glory. In comparison to the sun, everything else is flat, dark, and dim. If the sun glowing in the sky is so bright, imagine what God looks like? How bright would God be if we were able to see Him in His divine glory? This was the grace that the Blessed Mother and the Apostles were given on the Ascension. On the feast of the Ascension, Jesus leaves earth and ascends back to God the Father in heaven. Imagine what that scene looked like?

The American born painter Benjamin West wonderfully paints what this scene may have looked like in his painting The Ascension (1801). Jesus, ascending up to heaven, shines gloriously and brightly, high in the sky. Dazzling, bright light surrounds Christ and illumines the sky around him. The dazzling brightness of Christ is in stark contrast to everything else. Yes, the angels are illumined, but they are not as intense and bright as Jesus. The humans below Christ (the Blessed Mother, Apostles, and faithful women) are even dimmer than everyone else. The people on the bottom live in shadow compared to the glory of heaven. For a moment, the people living in darkness here below have seen the glory of heaven opened to their sight. For a moment, they see Jesus, truly as He is, the Son of God, like the bright sun, returning back to heaven, shining in all His glorious divinity. Nothing can compare to Christ’s radiance and glory. In comparison to the Son of God, everything else is flat, dark, and dim.

Like the people in lower half of Benjamin West’s image, we live in a place of shadow and death. Christ ascending into heaven in all his glory proclaims to the world that His work is done. Christ now reigns supreme over the earth, sin, and death! The earth can be a dark and gloomy place, but the Ascension of Christ fills us all with light and hope. St. John Chrysostom teaches, “observe that the Lord submits to our sight the promised

rewards. He had promised the resurrection of the body; He rose from the dead. It is also promised that we shall be caught up in the clouds through air; this also He made manifest by His works.” Happy Mother’s Day to all moms! Congratulations to all the students from our parish school and religious education program who received their First Holy Communion this Saturday, May 7. Please pray for all mothers today, living and deceased. During this Marian month of May, please pray the Litany of Mary everyday. May our Blessed Mother Mary help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

GO ST. JOSEPH KNIGHTS!

Happy Mothers’ Day! There is nothing as powerful as a mother’s love,

And nothing as healing as a child’s soul. Author; Unknown

I always enjoy earing the good news about our graduates. Recently I was informed that Isabella Davila (S.J. Grad.2015) received the President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence from Argo High School. We send our congratulations to Isabella and her family. May Crowning – Next Sunday, during the 9:30 a.m. Mass, we will be having our May Crowning. Our eighth graders, along with our Communicants, will take part in the procession. St. Jude – I mentioned last week that our fourth and fifth graders participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon. We were informed by St. Jude that in the 11 years our fourth and fifth graders have participated - under Mrs. Nieminski’s direction – our children have raised over $21,000.00. Registration - If you are interested in a Catholic Education for your children, please contact me at the school office, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss our school program. Through the Archdiocese there are a number of assistance programs for families, to make tuition more affordable. Our enrollment goal for next year is 230 children, which would be an increase of 20 children over this year. Please help us reach our goal! If you do not have school aged children, please spread the good news about our school. If you are speaking to neighbors or co-workers who are interested in a Catholic Education for their children, please encourage them to speak with me. I will gladly give them a tour of our school and speak to them about our program. Have a great week God Bless. Lawrence Manetti, Principal

Informes Padre Bob

Jakże jaśniałby Pan, gdybyśmy mogli ujrzeć Go w całej Jego chwale! Taką właśnie łaskę otrzymała Maryja i Apostołowie w dniu Wniebowstąpienia. Wówczas Jezus opuszcza naszą ziemską przestrzeń i powraca do Boga Ojca w Niebie. Spróbujmy sobie wyobrazić ten moment… Malarz Benjamin West próbował to przelać na płótno w obrazie zatytułowanym: „Wniebowstąpienie” z 1801 roku. Chrystus tutaj cały promienieje olśniewającym światłem, które rozjaśnia niebo. Stanowi to jaskrawe przeciwieństwo reszty dzieła.

Wszystkim Matko serdecznie życzę: HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! Pamiętajmy w modlitwie o wszystkich matkach: żyjących i zmarłych. Gratulujemy wszystkim naszym uczniom, którzy wczoraj (w sobotę, 7 maja) przystąpili do swojej I Komunii Świętej. Miesiąc maj tradycyjnie poświęcony jest Maryi. Zachęcam więc wszystkich wiernych do codziennego odmawiania litanii. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
