KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Canadian Press) Stephen Harper took one last tour of the war-torn Kan- dahar region yesterday as Canada prepares to leave its five-year war to begin training Afghan army and police. Harper told hundreds of troops at Kandahar Airfield that the long, bloody fight to keep the region from slipping back into the grasp of the Taliban has been Canada’s “great enterprise.” And he suggested it was a successful one, saying the country is no longer a threat to the world. Harper attempted to underscore that by visiting Tarnack Farms, a former agricultural project that later became a Taliban training centre and is now back in the hands of farmers. It is also the site where the first Canadian soldiers to die in Afghanistan were killed by friendly fire in 2002. The one-day visit also took the prime minister to a forward operating base, where he helped serve lunch, and then to a wreath-laying ceremony at an airfield memorial to Canadian dead. “You have been courageous warriors, so you are also compassionate neighbours,” Harper said in thanking the troops for their service. “You have done exception- ally well. TOM FLETCHER (Black Press) If they’re not disrupted by a strike at Canada Post, more than three million voting packages will be sent out in mid-June so voters can have their say on the harmonized sales tax. Voting packages will be sent out the week of June 13 to Vancouver Island and B.C. Interior loca- tions, Elections BC officials said in a media brief- ing yesterday. Packages will be mailed to Lower Mainland homes the week of June 20, in an effort to have all delivered by June 24. Canada Post employees have given notice that they may go on strike by Friday. If a strike disrupts the province-wide ballot on the HST, Elections BC will extend its return period as necessary to give voters time to consider the choice. Assuming no disruption in postal service, ballots must be completed and returned to Elections BC by July 22. They can be mailed in or returned to one of 60 Service BC offices around the province. Assistant chief electoral officer Anton Boegman said Elections BC has allowed until Aug. 25 to count and verify every returned ballot, and announce a decision. Voters will mark a ballot yes or no to the referendum question: “Are you in favour of extin- guishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and rein- stating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunc- tion with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)?” The ballots are to be marked and placed in a privacy envelope. That envelope goes inside a registration enve- lope that voters must sign and fill in their date of birth.
