My Dear Parishioners,

We continue our journey through the Easter Season – the One Great Sunday. This Sunday, we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Easter which is also referred to as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Each year of our three year Sunday Lectionary cycle, the beautiful image of the shepherd changes slightly, but its reference always remains constant. This weekend, Christ is seen as the sheep gate through which authentic pastors and sheep pass. The image of the gate is one that is a dividing line between the threats of the outside world and the safety of the meadow and the sheepfold.

This Sunday may be likened to a kind of “hinge” Sunday in that we are making a shift in our thought process during the Easter season. The image of the compassion and care of the Good Shepherd calls us to look back with fondness to the appearance accounts of Jesus that we have heard in previous weeks. We are also challenged to look ahead in preparation to our call to become disciples which we will hear about in the upcoming weeks of this season. The message of the Gospel today gives us hope as we learn more about being a true disciple. As we look ahead then to the ups and downs of discipleship, Jesus reminds us today that He is nevertheless always walking ahead of us as our Good Shepherd to protect us and to guide us.

The month of May is a time when we express with particular intensity our love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis recently wrote a letter to all the faithful reminding us of the importance of praying the most holy rosary especially as a family during this time of pandemic and with many being sheltered at home. Below is an excerpt of his letter:

“I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow. I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this letter so that they are available to everyone.

Contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my pray-ers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing.” (end quote)

Our Holy Father’s complete letter to the faithful for the month of May along with his personally written prayers can be found online at http://www.vatican.va/content/vatican/en.html. And so, I encourage you and your families to pray the rosary during this month dedicated to Our Lady asking for her intercession, especially during this time of trial and suffering in the world.

I thank all those who continue their weekly giving to our parish week to week. This is so important to keep our parish healthy and strong. Please continue to do as your means allow. Simply mail in your contributions or you can always drop off your envelope at the rectory. Also, electronic giving is always an option and perhaps you may want to consider that at this time. Whatever means you choose and whatever you can do for us, know that I am truly grateful! Finally, don’t forget to “tune in” to Sunday Mass at 10:00 AM through our parish website. I also invite you to virtually participate in our weekly Tuesday Holy Hour beginning at 7:00 PM. Until next week, I pray that you and your families will continue to be blessed with the joy and peace of the Risen Christ.

Love and prayers, Fr. Carey
