BRIAN DAINSBERG The Litmus Test for a Hypocrite A hypocrite is someone who is one thing on the outside and another on the inside or one thing in public and another in private. What is the litmus test Jesus uses to determine if someone is a hypocrite? Typically we might think it’s sex – “He appears to be a family man, but he’s caught up in an affair.” We might think it’s money – “He comes across as a caring person, but he won’t give the poorest person a dime.” We might think it’s anger – “She puts on a pretty face, but inside she’s a raging bull.” Jesus doesn’t use sex, money, or anger as the litmus test for determining a hypocrite. He uses prayer. In Matthew 6:5 Jesus says, “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.” In the context, Jesus says a hypocrite is someone who prays in public, but doesn’t have a private prayer life. Did you catch that? According to Jesus a hypocrite is someone who will pray at church, in Bible studies, and at prayer meetings, but doesn’t spend time in private prayer when no one is around. How’s your private prayer life?
