McKenna plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin this fall. She plans on majoring in aerospace engi- neering. Her summer plans include relaxing with family and attending orientation op- portunities at UT. Beyond her studies, McK- enna’s senior year has also included TCEA Robotics, Lego FIRST Robotics, UIL, BPA, National Honor So- ciety and church activities. McKenna said she is looking forward to a little more inde- pendence as she set off for college but knows she will miss her family and the Val- ley culture while gone. The valedictorian’s ad- vice to next year’s seniors is to not procrastinate, but not get in too big of a rush either. She says it is the last school year you get to be a “child” and they should enjoy it. This year’s Mission High School salutatorian is Jin H. Gao. He is the son of Kehe Gao and Rui Huang. Gao will be joining McKenna at the University of Texas at Austin. Electrical engineer- ing is where he plans to focus his studies. Gao said he would like to work for Space X and is looking for internship oppor- tunities, specifically with that company. Spending some time fishing and UT orienta- tion are some of the activities he knows will take up some of his summer plans. The salutatorian’s senior year activities included the two robotics programs on campus, BPA, National Hon- or Society, Student Council and UIL. He says he is most looking forward to the study- abroad opportunities he plans to pursue while at UT, and seeing what the college meal plans are like. Gao said that next year’s seniors should plan their year wisely, and to apply to as many colleges as they can. Mission High School in general and its teachers are among the things he knows he will miss this fall. Alejandra Karima Reyna is the third ranking student at Mission High School. She is the daughter of Gauden- H ector Luis Iglesias is the Veterans Memo- rial High School class of 2016 valedictorian. He is the son of Leticia and Hector Iglesias. Hector plans to at- tend the Massachusetts Insti- tute of Technology this fall. His chosen major is electri- cal engineering and com- puter science. Iglesias said he also plans to explore the possibility of a second ma- jor in math. Before heading to MIT, he plans to continue working at Mathnasium and studying. The valedictorian’s senior year activities include robot- ics, SeaPerch, Masterminds, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, BPA and Sci- ence Bowl. Iglesias said he is looking forward to meeting people from all over the world at MIT, and the opportunity to explore areas of the north- eastern part of the country. However, he said he knows he is going to miss being around his family. Iglesias’s advice to the seniors of 2017 is to not pro- crastinate, especially on col- lege related items. This year’s Veterans Memorial High School sa- lutatorian is Rene Alberto Olivarez. Rene is the son of Anna and Orlando Olivarez. He will also be heading for the northeastern part of the country for college; he will be attending Yale University where he plans to major in biochemistry and then pur- sue law school. Olivarez’s summer plans include relax- ing, spending time with fam- ily and perhaps a summer session at college. His senior year activities include FFA, student coun- cil, HOSA, UIL, robotics, SeaPerch, National Honor Society, Science Bowl and Mu Alpha Theta. The salutatorian said he is going to miss his fami- ly time and the high school routine when he goes north, but is looking forward to the new activities that will be available to him at college. He also said he is looking forward to exploring nearby areas of the northeastern part of the country. Olivarez said next year’s seniors should plan to do as much as possible with what is left of their time in high school. It can be stressful, he said, but it is worth it. Feliciano Escobedo is the third ranking student in the Veterans Memorial High School class of 2016. Escobe- do is the son of Brenda and Armando Sandoval. He will be joining classmate, Hector at the Massachusetts Insti- tute of Technology, where he plans on pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. Es- cobedo’s summer will likely include time relaxing, a trip abroad and continuing some of his church-related volun- teer work. The third ranked student’s activities this school year include UIL, HOSA, BPA, SeaPerch, Science Bowl, National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He said he is excited about meeting new people from all over the world at college and the op- portunities that will come for exploring other areas of that part of the country. When commence-ment ceremonies are held for the

high schools of Mission CISD on June 2. More than 100 graduates will already be career-ready upon their grad-uation. These 153 students took advantage of programs offered through the district’s Career Technical Education Program to earn professional certifications.

The programs are made available to Mission CISD students through partner-ships with South Texas Col-

lege. In many cases, these certificates not only qualify the students for profession-al-level jobs, but also serve as a direct pathway to higher degrees and certifications.

The Mission CISD stu-dents graduating with pro-fessional certifications in-clude: 117 for multimedia specialist, 11 for patient care assistant, 17 for structural welding and 8 for precision manufacturing technology. Mission CISD anticipates this number will continue to grow next year as other pro-

grams bear fruit for the first time next school year.

The district also provides opportunities for students to work toward other profes-sional certifications offered through state and national professional organizations and agencies. That number won’t be available for anoth-er couple of weeks as grades and certification exam re-sults come in. In the past, this has topped 600 business and industry related certifi-cations earned by Mission CISD graduates.

A total of 10 students at Mission High School earned AP Scholar

Awards in recognition of their exceptional achieve-ment on AP (Advanced Placement) exams.

The College Board’s Ad-vanced Placement Program provides motivated and ac-ademically prepared stu-dents with the opportunity to take rigorous, college-level courses while still in high

school and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful perfor-mance on the AP exams.

Three students earned the AP Scholar with Honor Award by receiving an av-erage score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of the exams. The three students are seniors Jin Gao and Katherine McKen-na, and Violeta Rivera from

the class of 2015. Seven students qualified

for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher. The AP Scholar in the current senior class is Eric De Leon. The AP Schol-ars from the class of 2015 are: Xavier Alonzo, Jose Calderon, Edelmiro Garcia, Luis Gonzalez, Eri Longoria, Jasmin Vega.

Two students from the Mission High School Future Business Lead-

ers of America Chapter advanced to national com-petitions based upon their performance at the recent Texas FBLA State Lead-ership Conference held in Houston. The FBLA Nation-al Leadership Conference will be held in Atlanta, Geor-gia in June.

sists of two parts: a one-hour exam consisting of objec-tive-type questions related to the application knowledge of word processing concepts, and a one-hour production test. Cazares was also named who’s who in Texas FBLA.

Gerardo Hernandez placed fourth in the database design competition. This event consists of two parts: a one-hour online exam consisting of objective-type questions related to the ap-plications knowledge of da-

tabase design and application concepts, and a one-hour production test.

A total of eight members of the MHS FBLA competed at the state level. The mem-bers were: Diego Bustillos, Rebeca Gomez, Ja Reta-Cor-doba, Dante Rodriguez, Mar-co Silva and Pedro Silva.

and fine art competitions at the state and national levels. You set a new bar for future graduating classes to aspire towards.

Yet, in our district legacy we have a first — Mission Collegiate Early College High School, a two-time na-tionally recognized campus, will have their first graduat-ing class with a vast majority of their students receiving an associates degree. These graduating classes of 2016 are truly leaders of Texas and our nation. Charge on!

In Mission CISD we play to win. Your academic pre-paredness for college, ca-reers and life will give you the needed training and tools to compete with anyone in the nation at the highest lev-els. Although you have the foundation to succeed in ev-ery endeavor, I want to share words of advice to keep you grounded to allow you to make all your dreams come

true. The first is to be passion-

ate with every task you do. When you put love and posi-tive energy into anything you do, life is significantly more enjoyable. You wake up ener-gized and inspired and filled with contagious energy that inspires others. This inspira-tion fosters and transforms the mundane tasks to cele-brated undertakings. Passion separates the extraordinary from the ordinary. Those with passion prosper.

The second truth is to al-ways be you. There is only one you and you must be comfortable in your own skin. You have special gifts and talents that the world will see; do not worry about what others think or say. Their doubts may be their way of keeping your great-ness from shining through. The only way to shine is by being yourself and believ-ing in the gifts you have. In

Mission CISD, we honor and love you for the real you. Stay true to yourself.

Finally, always do what is right and ethical. It is easy to get trapped by peer pres-sure, especially when adults are no longer closely moni-toring your behavior. Adult-hood carries freedom but with freedom comes more responsibility. Use mature decision-making in all your career and life choices, and when in doubt, we will be here for you.

On behalf of the Mission CISD Board of Trustees and more than 2,000 education employees, we salute the graduating class of 2016. We are proud of your past accomplishments and look forward to relishing in your future ones. Congratulations, and best wishes on your bright future.

Dr. Ricardo López, proud Superintendent of Schools

A total of 14 students at Veterans Memorial High School earned

AP Scholar Awards in rec-ognition of their exception-al achievement on AP (Ad-vanced Placement) exams.

The College Board’s Ad-vanced Placement Program provides motivated and ac-ademically prepared stu-dents with the opportunity to take rigorous, college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful per-formance on the AP exams. The College Board recogniz-es several levels of achieve-ment, based on students’ per-formances on AP exams.

One student qualified

for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of the exams. Darius Davis, from the class of 2015, was named a National AP Schol-ar.

Four students qualified for the AP Scholar with Dis-tinction Award. This is grant-ed to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of the exams. The four students are: cur-rent VMHS seniors Feliciano Escobedo, Hector Iglesias, Rene Olivarez; and Darius Davis from the class of 2015.

Current senior, Tomas

Garcia, qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award. This is earned by receiving an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of the exams.

Nine students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completed three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher. Junior, Isaac Martinez and senior, Aimee Villarreal have earned the AP Scholar Award. Mem-bers of the class of 2015 who also earned this award include: Noel Barsenas, Jai-me Bazaldua, Henry Davis, Judith Haro, Jacqueline Mar-tinez, Ted Rodriguez, Lee Sanchez.

Feliciano Escobedo, Hector Iglesias, Rene Olivarez, Tomas Garcia.

Rene Olivarez, a grad-uating senior at Vet-erans Memorial High

School, was named one of 689 semifinalists in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 4,700 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2016.

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Pro-gram, now in its 52nd year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artis-tic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in commu-nity and school activities.

A distinguished panel of educators have reviewed submissions and select-ed 689 semifinalists. The commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the finalist. The U.S. De-partment of Education will

announce the Scholars in later in May. Scholars will be invited to Washington, DC for several days in June to receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion at a rec-ognition ceremony and to

participate in events and ac-tivities.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was estab-lished in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to rec-ognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduat-ing seniors for their accom-plishments in many areas:

academic success, leader-ship, and service to school and community. It was ex-panded in 1979 to recog-nize students demonstrating exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts.

In 2015, the program was expanded once again to recognize students who demonstrate ability and ac-complishment in career and technical fields. Annually, up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen from among that year’s senior class, representing excel-lence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth. All Schol-ars are invited to Washing-ton, DC in June for the Na-tional Recognition Program, featuring various events and enrichment activities and culminating in the presen-tation of the PResidential Scholars Medallion during a White House-sponsored cer-emony.

VMHS senior named semifinalist in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

Veterans Memorial High School student Rene Oliva-rez placed sixth in the nation at the 2016 Business Profes-sionals of America National Leadership Conference held recently in Boston, MA. Ol-ivarez competed in the ex-temporaneous speech events. After advancing to the finals of the national competition,

he placed at sixth in the na-tion after the results were re-leased.

In order to compete at the national conference, students must be a registered BPA member in good standing and compete in a regional and state level workplace skills assessment program. Oliva-rez placed first in the regional

competitions and second at the state competition, qualify-ing him for nationals.

BPA is the leading Career and Technical Student Orga-nization for students pursuing careers in business manage-ment, office administration, information technology and other related career fields.

VMHS student placed in top ten at national competition

Veterans Memorial High School junior Mirna Rodriguez will be spending a few days at Princ-eton University this summer learning more about journalism from reporters from some of the

nation’s leading news organizations. Rodriguez, a VMHS GEAR UP student, has been selected to attend the Princeton University Summer Journalism Program in Princeton, New Jersey. Over 350 students from around the

country applied for the program. Only 38 were selected to participate. The summer program will be an intensive, 10-day seminar on journalism. The program’s goal is to diversify college and professional newsrooms by encouraging outstanding students to

pursue careers in journalism. Reporters and editors from The New York Times, The Washing-ton Post, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Time Magazine, The Daily Beast, CNN, NPR

and other media outlets teach classes.

VMHS student selected for Princeton journalism program

enjoy it because it really the best year of high school, in her opinion.

The third ranking student at Mission Collegiate High School is Jose Garcia. He is the son of Dinora Duran.

Psychology is what Gar-cia plans to focus on when he begins classes at the Uni-versity of Texas Rio Grande Valley this fall. Prior to that,

Garcia hopes to have a part-time summer job. Journal-ism, UIL and National Hon-or Society are some of the extra activities he has been involved in during his senior year.

Garcia said he is going to miss the environment created at MCHS and the people of the school. He enjoyed how they became like a family

and set history for the school. However, the third rank stu-dent indicated he is looking forward to working on his major in college and getting a step closer to his goals.

He warns next year’s se-niors to have fun, but start working on college applica-tions as soon as school starts.

cio and Dora Reyna. This fall, Reyna will head off to College Station, to attend Texas A&M University where she plans to major in the Bio-Medical Sciences in preparation for medical school, while also possibly getting a second major in business. She sees herself becoming a psychiatrist.

Before heading for Col-lege Station, Reyna said she

hopes to work as a hospital volunteer at Rio Grande Re-gional Hospital. Her senior year activities have included: band, BPA, National Honor Society, DECA, Environ-mental Club and community volunteer work that included time at Palm Valley Animal Shelter.

Time management is something she said seniors need to focus on as they be-

gin their final year in high school. She said it is import-ant to stay on top of every-thing and to avoid slacking off toward the end of the year.

While she knows she will miss seeing everyone every day at Mission High School, she is looking forward to the freedoms that come with go-ing to college.

Two students from Mis-sion Collegiate High School were selected,

along with only eight oth-er high schools students, to participate in the UTRGV High School Summer Intern-ship Program, funded by the Howard Hughes Medical In-stitute.

In June, Harry Siegel and Valerie Flores will begin the

six-week program that will allow them to experience re-search at a university level, while under the mentorship of UTRGV professors.

As a part of the internship, Siegel and Flores will be re-quired to work a minimum of 25 hours a week, and be al-lowed to take one three-cred-it course at UTRGV, as long as the course does not con-

flict with their internship lab work. Upon successful com-pletion of the internship, the students will also receive a $1,200 stipend.

At the end of the six-week internship, the students will also present their findings from their completed re-search to the STEM UTRGV faculty and staff.

The College Board recogniz-es several levels of achieve-ment based on students’ per-formance on AP exams.

One student qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award. This is granted to stu-dents who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of the exams. Senior Daya-na Garza Gonzalez earned the AP Scholar with Honor

Sixteen students from Mission High School and Veterans Memorial High School are ready to enter the professional workforce, several weeks before they get their high school diplo-mas. The dual enrollment phlebotomy students have been working on their skills and knowledge through the program offered through the district’s partnership with South Texas College.
