We are ordinarily deluged by 100-150 teens and chaperones for the weekend — Friday evening through Sunday morning — to feed, provide overnights accommodations for (although not much sleeping actually occurs), and encourage in the Lord. There will be banquets, great singing, prayers, great lessons from the Scriptures, spiritual “commercials” from our own teens, lots of fun, and often baptisms and rededicated lives. And because of all this activity, we’ll be needing a lot of help — sometimes with transportation, sometimes in the kitchen, certainly with hospitality homes, and maybe even with regard to what worship service you decide to attend. Let me explain this last one: we hope to have 150 visitors among us in addition to our own teens and necessary helpers. Our auditorium will accommodate about 198 — know what I mean? So, can you help? Your contributions to this effort will bear wonderful spiritual fruit today and years into the future. Find out what you can do by talking with Ryan Lloyd, Linda Paul, and Mary Scarlett. Last Sunday morning was a lesson on Patience from one of our elders, Lee Davis. This Sunday, the first service will feature our youth rally speaker, Matt Wilson. But the later worship service, the one that many of us will be encouraged to come to will have me (Park) in the pulpit again and talking about “A Simple, Fulfilling Spirituality”. Are you coming to an assembly on Sunday evening? We have a number of small groups, of course, but if you’d like to join us at the church building again on Sunday evening, 6 PM, we’ll be continuing a look at the words of hymns and spiritual songs that we sing. We’ll be looking at the lyrics and comparing them with what the Scripture itself says. I think you’ll find it most interesting and the fellowship afterward is pretty awesome. Join us; you’ll love it!

The Manchester youth rally (a.k.a. The Gander Brook Reunion) is a highlight of our congregation’s activity each year.

And because of all this

activity, we’ll be needing a lot of help — sometimes with transportation, sometimes in the kitchen, certainly with hospitality homes, and maybe even with regard to what worship service you decide to attend.

Well, Memorial Day has come and gone, and with it the unofficial beginning of summer. Plant your gardens, make your summer vacation plans, fire up the grill, break out your shorts and sandals, put on your “cool shades”, send in your Gander Brook registrations (a little commercial; I hope you don’t mind), and let’s enjoy New England’s favorite season after a long cold winter. Yeah, summer!

But along with this wonderful time of the year comes a few spiritual challenges not found as much in the other seasons. In view of these challenges, may I offer a few Christian, biblical words of wisdom and guidance to help us all continue walking in the light as He is in the light?

First, let me encourage you to be careful how you dress.

This word of wisdom is usually directed primarily in the direction of the sisters, but the brothers need to heed this word, too — be modest. Short shorts, clothing that is too tight, clothing that is too loose, clothing that is designed to attract sexual interest (e.g., blouses that reveal too much of the breast from front or side, clothing that shows one’s underwear, clothing with inappropriate messages printed on it, and (to quote the apostle Paul) "… things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." Galatians 5:21, NAS95. And I’m not just talking about what you’ll wear to church services; I’m also talking about what you wear Monday through Saturday, too!

“But it’s just too hot to wear all those clothes,” you might answer.

Listen, folks who live in truly hot places in the world discovered a long time ago that taking off clothing so that skin is exposed is a really poor way to stay cool — take it from a Texan who used to work 8 hrs./day in 105 degree heat. Hats, light-weight long-sleeve shirts, loose fitting pants, full skirts (light weight) below the knee, sandals, and light colors (not black or red) render the person wearing them much cooler than allowing the direct sun to get to the skin.

Second, don’t take a vacation from worship services.

The Bible verses which say, "And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24, 25, NAS95) aren’t nullified for the summer; so, factor in worship with the Lord’s people into your vacation plans. Do a little research to find the closest congregation to where you’ll be on Sundays (and Wednesdays), and make definite plans to go. A big book of congregations of the churches of Christ in the whole USA is available to use in the office.

And please, don’t plan to use Sunday morning to go to the beach and skip church. Yes, there is a Sunday evening service at 6PM, and communion will be served then, too, but let’s be honest, 6PM easily “slips up on us” on a lazy day at the beach, sometimes the traffic can delay us more than we anticipated, and it’s incredibly easy to rationalize that “missing just this once isn’t going to kill us.”

Third, please continue to help in the work of the church, even when

you’re gone. This has to do with money,

and everyone hates to talk about money, so I’ll be brief — the bills will continue to come all summer long. Summer is often the “low tide” of the year when it comes to contributions. The reasons are numerous, but the solution is simple; please continue to help out with the work of the church through sending in contributions while you’re on vacation, or making them up, when you return.

Fourth, don’t let fun trump everything else.

Yes, we should have some fun in the summer. But why not consider using your vacation time for some spiritual growth, instead of glutting ourselves on pure entertainment? How much of our lives do we really need to waste on TV, video games, etc.? Make life count, make vacation count; grow, deepen, make a difference in the lives of others! Set a goal to read through a portion of Scripture you haven’t read in a long time or have never read at all. Resolve to invite someone new to church every day this summer. Make yourself a promise that you’ll be a good Samaritan to at least one person every day this week. Let vacation be a time re-creation rather than wreck-reation.
