Many of you may not be aware that our oldest daughter was born

with a congenital heart defect. We are grateful that she is doing

well and living a full life. She is just one of millions of people with

cardiovascular disease in our country that the AHA is working so

hard to protect. We are blessed with the financial resources that

many in similar situations might not have.

Right now, in Tulsa we are facing serious issues reaching the city’s

most vulnerable population. Not only are heart and stroke patients

at higher risk, but they also face higher mortality rates if they

contract COVID-19. According to the CDC, serious heart conditions

including heart failure, coronary artery disease, congenital heart

disease, cardiomyopathies, and pulmonary hypertension may put

people at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.

When we agreed to chair the 2021 Heart Ball, we never dreamed

the country would be facing this pandemic. However, we have been

impressed by the AHA’s immediate and impactful response. For

more than a century, they have helped people live longer, healthier

lives, and today is no different.

From the Heart,

Hayley & Kevin Vann

help people understand the importance of healthy lifestyle

choices. We provide science-based treatment guidelines to

healthcare professionals to help them provide quality care

to their patients. We educate lawmakers, policymakers, and

the public as we advocate for changes to protect and

improve the health of our communities.

The Heart of Tulsa Award is given annually to an individual who has made a significant investment

in the health of the Tulsa community. This year, the Award was presented to AJ Johnson. Through

his work with the Tulsa Dream Center, over 10,000 meals have been distributed to North Tulsa

families and students during their Friday drive-thru grocery experience. This has become a place of

hope for so many, including the over 400 boys and girls who participate in the after-school

program.

Last year was Tulsa Dream Center’s 20th Anniversary and when COVID hit, they responded with

hope and love through an outpouring of support from local volunteers and organizations like the

American Heart Association. AJ embodies their motto - “One Person. One Family. One

Community.” – and we are grateful for his contributions to our community.

The 2021 Heart of Tulsa Award is presented by Enduro Pipeline Services.

Every year, 1 in 100 babies are born with a congenitalheart defect. For Jamie Eckerd, it was all three of her

children.

Shanley was born in 1995 and had to undergo open-heart surgery at just 3 days old. She would require

several more surgeries over the next few years.

Bailey was born in 1998 and doctors heard a heartmurmur at his one-year check-up. Because of his

enlarged heart, Bailey was forced to sit out during hisjunior year of high school football.

Prior to Colt’s birth in 2011, doctors were able to

discover 2 extra holes in his heart during Jamie’spregnancy using a test that wasn’t available when

she was pregnant with Shanley and Bailey. “The more that is raised and the more attention thatwe give the Heart Association…the more technologyand…healing that we can do on these children,” said

Jamie.

Tonight you will hear more from Jamie Eckerd andthe impact that heart disease had on her family.

Please consider Opening Your Heart to make alifesaving donation toward the mission of the
