Chaplain Beth’s Ponderings:
In the midst of the spread of COVID-19, we pray…
I have been the physically absent chaplain these days and weeks since mid-March. As I write from home tonight, it is late. Thoughts are churning around in my head and I can’t sleep. I suspect I’m not alone with this issue of sleep. What has been ‘normal’ in our lives has been upended by a virus that science still knows so little about. I struggle with efforts just to keep some routine and order in my personal life. On top of that, I struggle with the bigger issue of how to provide some devotional experi-ences and spiritual encouragement as your chaplain, with the tools of technology—oh, wow. I think, when the time is right, I will write an article called “Technology and Sanity: Can They Co-exist?” My supervisor tells me, “NO! World religions can coexist, but not technology and sanity!” Arghhh! I may never share that article with anyone, but it still may prove to be cathartic. Thank goodness the phone, however, is my friend! We’ve had our major Christian and Jewish holidays of Easter and Passover this year in lockdown. Celebrations of life and lib-eration that we long for in the spring have still taken place, but so differently this year! I have hungered to read and hear words of hope and new life, promises of God’s presence and work in this broken world now more than ever. I am thankful for all those church leaders who have been reaching out to hurting, lonely people in our country, with encouraging and uplifting services online; musicians offering online performances to inspire; indi-viduals sending letters, cards, text messages, and emails to keep in touch. All of these things remind me that we are still community, even when physically separated. Ramadan begins on the 23rd of April and will continue through the 23rd of May. Our Muslim brothers and sisters from across the world observe various traditions during this time that teach them to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empa-thy for those who are less fortunate, thus encouraging actions of generosity and charity. This is a beautiful example of practice for our entire world to follow in the face of this pandemic. So many people are sacrificing their own safety—putting their lives at risk to serve in essential places of need. Understanding the vulnerability of community living, those who are caring for our seniors face a huge responsibility to protect these precious lives. As I have talked to a number of residents here at Cherry-wood Pointe, appreciation for what the staff is doing to keep you all safe and connected, is the theme that comes through in every conversation. So many reasons we have to give thanks!

paper towel? Call Josh (Maintenance Director) at 651-766-2267. To help ensure we
have enough supplies, we ask that you please refrain from using Cherrywood Sup-

*Please remember*- We are asking all residents to remain in the building during
the Shelter in Place per the Governor’s orders. This order is set to end on 5/18, un-
less this order is extended. This includes not leaving the building for non-
essential shopping, social visits, non-essential doctor visits, etc. Please help us in
keeping the community safe and reduce exposure for yourself and all. Thank you!
For this months Resident Spotlight, I thought it would be nice to hear a bit about a musical
performer we have in our building! His Name is Steve W. and he sings and plays guitar! It has been
some time now since any of us have seen a live, non virtual, musical performance, and Steve and I
thought it would be nice to bring some live music to your hallways. Playing in front of groups is not an
easy task, but Steve has grown accustomed to this, as he has been playing guitar and singing since
he was 19 years young! Steve bought his first guitar which was a 3 string guitar that his room mate at
the time suggested he start with. This 3 string guitar would go on to lead Steve down a path full of en-
tertainment. Steve became pretty good at the 3 string guitar, and as he leaned more songs, he up-
graded to more strings. Steve began playing in small groups for his singles group after his 1st wife’s
passing. He would play at campfires and bring his guitar on their camping trips and would enjoy play-
ing and singing for the small groups. Steve would go on to retire from his teaching job in 1996. During
retirement, Steve picked up a temp job but also need a time consuming hobby. Steve recognized the
need to pick up the guitar and start performing for Nursing Homes in the area. Steve would play many
different facilities throughout the years but had 5 specific locations where he would play 1 time a
month and has some great memories from those performances. As retirement went on, and the temp
work slowed down, Steve would start to spend his winters in the sunny state of Arizona. Many musi-
cians would fly to Arizona to get away from the cold weather. In the parks in AZ, they have what local’s
call Jam Sessions. Where musician's can sign up and play their instrument or sing on a stage in front
of an audience. Steve enjoyed these so much that him and two buddies started one of these Jam Ses-
sions for their park. They would have groups of 100-200 people come to watch and listen to the per-
formances. Steve says one of his favorite songs to sing was Hello Love. Steve also does a great Willie
Nelson impression, wig & all, and will sing Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain while wearing the wig. Steve
may not get to Arizona as often as he would like, but he enjoys having the opportunity to share his mu-
sic here with all the folks at Cherrywood Pointe.
Brandon Johnson - Activities Director
Steve will be singing and playing guitar on 2nd floor 5/5, 3rd floor 5/6 and 4th floor 5/7 following bingo, during social hour. Bingo is at 2:30pm, Social Hour and Steve’s musical performance will be at 3:30pm. See you there!
5 Tips for Staying Active from Visiting Angels Walking: If the weather is pleasant and it’s possible to avoid crowds, a walk around the block can provide sufficient exercise to reduce restlessness and deliver mood- and immune-boosting benefits. If you must stay indoors, walking around the house or marching in place can increase daily step counts. Exercise and strength training: Yoga, Pilates, tai chi, and stretching can help stay fit at home during “shelter-in-place” orders and can improve balance, flexibility, core strength, and overall mobility. Strength training doesn’t necessarily involve lifting heavy weights at the gym. Many strength-training exercises can be done at home while sitting or lying down. Seniors only need their body weight and a few simple exercises to get started. If desired, use everyday household items such as soup cans to add weight for exercises. Dancing: Known for its cardiovascular benefits, dancing is a fun, low-impact way to exercise and boost endurance during long days of social distancing. As an added benefit, listening to some favorite music may even encourage your loved one to exercise their mind by taking a pleasant “walk” down memory lane. Gardening : For older adults who enjoy being outdoors, gardening can enhance outdoor spaces while burning calories and providing a healthy dose of fresh air. Although some older adults may not be mobile enough to dig in the dirt, there are other alternatives to reap the benefits of gardening. Potting small plants or herbs to be maintained indoors or decorating an enclosed porch or patio can provide an afternoon’s diversion. Arts and crafts: Older adults who have limited mobility can stay active at home by partici-pating in arts and crafts. Whether knitting, crocheting, painting, coloring, or working with clay, arts and crafts can help maintain dexterity and cognitive skills.
