Report from President Sue Harris

Hello Friends Where did April go??? I guess buying a new house with all the conversations with lawyers, banks etc. takes up time plus Easter was in there too somewhere! Kevin and I went to spent Easter in Methven where I lived with my late husband for 20 years. He was in charge of the Police Station there and that’s where I obtained my love for small communities. One thousand population in the summer and tripling that in the winter for the ski season at Mt Hutt. We enjoyed catching up with my son Mark and his family Phoenix 7 and Axel nearly 5. They have a scarecrow competition there every year where businesses, schools and

residents make a scarecrow to a theme, this year was children’s film characters and then you pay for a map and have to guess the 40 scarecrows. We also visited South Pacific Seed Company where my son works and saw how vegetable seeds are cleaned for export. This is a huge industry with millions of seeds exported every year. Another visit was to the Grain and Snow Centre which I helped set up when we upgraded the Memorial Hall. We added in the information centre, an Art Gallery and upgraded the hall’s war memorial and the main hall for conferences. Well worth a visit if you are in Mid Canterbury or Christchurch which is only an hour’s drive away, plus you can experience a lovely road trip through the Rakaia Gorge. Methven has plenty of cafes to choose from too, especially Marias Café which is in amongst an antique shop. The Top Twins also have a café in town!

We lunched at Terrace Downs Golf Resort, a 15 minute drive from Methven and did the Washpen Falls walk at Windwhistle. The falls are where they used to wash the sheep many years ago. As you can see plenty of things to do in the area and the Rakaia Gorge has a great camping spot if you are caravanning. Kapiti FF activities We had our morning tea at Café Lane with 17 attendees. I usually do a quick update at the morning teas, and you are welcome to bring along anyone interested in joining. Please do speak to anyone you think may be interested in joining Friendship Force. When talking to others outside Friendship Force try not focusing on travel but by focusing on the way we can gain a better understanding of different cultures by experiencing their world from their homes. Our annual picnic with Wellington was held due to inclement weather at a boating club in Porirua. A good number from our club attended and while we didn’t win the raffle we did have fun playing a number of games, “Up she goes” and a golf putting competition included.

As our new Motto is BE VISIBLE, so we will be working on this to attract new members by being seen out and about at different venues. The field reps are also working on a “Bumper Sticker” which can be placed on your car, letterbox or another prominent place. These will be available at our Soup Lunch in July for purchase at around $2.50. We are ordering 30, so first in first served! Getting new members is our priority this year as many of you have been active members of our club for many years but are winding down your travel and hosting commitments. I had a first meeting on Saturday April 27th to discuss ways for us to Be Visible, and to promote ourselves. While only a small number attended we have come up with some great ideas! One being an Advertising Board able to go up on the Community Notice Board areas in Raumati, Paraparaumu and Waikane on a cyclic basis. If you know a place to place our new brochure, please text or ring me on 0274 385143 or send me an email [email protected]. We also would like you to wear if you have one, our journey tee shirt or vest to coffee mornings and outings so that we look like a group. If you have either of these and don’t intend ever wearing them again could you please hand to someone on the board so we can pass on or sell to other members who will use them on future journeys. Are there any members interested in becoming a Pub Quiz Team? We thought this could be a way of being seen in the community. Let me know and we will see how we could do this. It could just be roster of people at one Pub Quiz Venue. Have you looked at our Facebook Page and Our NZ Friendship Force Page? If you need help with Facebook at any time please contact me to set up a meeting time where I can visit and run you through the basics. Facebook is a great way to keep up to date with family and friends especially if they or you are overseas. It is also another way we can read comments by FFI and see what other FF groups in NZ are doing. Many have their own page which you can like and keep up with. Our next overseas journey has been confirmed as Brisbane and Bundaberg. Rhondda Harris is the Ambassador Coordinator. Rhondda will send out information in due course. Our 2020 Inward Journey is from Friendship Force of Raleigh who we visited in 2016, probably late March 2020 Allan and Beverley are to be Host Co Coordinators. Fran is looking into a club journey to another NZ club possibly later in the year and anyone is welcome to attend the NZ FF Conference in Marlborough in Feb 19,20 and 21 2020. There is no local hosting so we could make this a motel or air bnb few days away together. Email me if you would like to go. If you’d like to send Beverley a few paragraphs on your trip away for our members to read in our newsletter please do so at any time as I know some of you have been or are going to some interesting places. We are also doing a member profile so that you become familiar with both new and older members. I am intending to travel to Africa for my 65th birthday next year. This is not a FF journey but if anyone is interested in joining me please let me know. It may be an 8 person tour in Kenya although you can add anything else on, staying mostly at a base house in Nairobi, includes safari and meeting local people. Cost approx. $5,500pp plus airfares (approx. $2000pp) and incidentals. I am away from May 28 to approx. July 14. Kevin and I are off to France, UK and Spain. Kevin is doing a cycle trip in the South of France and I join him a bit later to do my first cycle trip EVER in the Cotswolds!! We move into our new house as soon as we get home so another new adventure begins! In friendship Sue Harris

Sue’s Tip for the Month

BE VISIBLE Taupo Friendship Force help out at Community events e.g. The lake Run. If you belong to an organisation that may need volunteers we could see if we could get some of our members to help, wearing our Tee Shirts or vests of course. If you do collections as a volunteer maybe you could wear your vest while collecting! Just a thought.

Board Member Lois Horsfall

Lois is one of our newer Board Members and you will remember she organised the recent Brunch LEO to the Bus Stop Cafe in Te Horo. We can promise more LEO dining activities which Lois will be organising. Lois works in Healthcare at the Nikau Club Day Respite unit at Seven Oaks in Paraparaumu. She has been there for three years. Although Lois was born and bred in the Wairarapa, she actually arrived in Kapiti in 2015 from Pukekohe to be nearer her young grandson. Lois has a son and a daughter. We have been pleased to welcome Lois to our Board.

Adding more languages to our FFI Website

If you speak English, you will have no trouble reading the FFI website. There are other languages available

also. However, FFI says there are 6 languages they would be very keen in which to have translations of the

website. Sadly this costs money. So FFI are having a fundraising auction specifically for this project.

Here’s some information.

https://mailchi.mp/friendshipforce/board_auction?e=77a4339c3d.

Intrigued? An email will be sent to all members very soon. The deadline for offers has now been extended

to 1 June.

THE FRIENDSHIP FORCE PLEDGE

As a member of the Friendship Force I recognise that I can make a difference. I recognise that I have a mission.

That mission is to be a friend to the people of the world. As I embark on this adventure I know that others will be watching me.

I know that through my example to my fellow citizens and people of other countries, the cause of peace and friendship can be furthered.

I can make a difference.
