With the end of the financial year I am pleased to report that our Club will report a trading surplus again this year. This is particularly pleasing as we did not enjoy the windfall profit enjoyed last year but incurred costs relating to our systems upgrade. We also invested in professional tuition for our young sailors.

Work is progressing to quantify the future of our Club Dock and what its replacement will be together with the costs and timing for this as well as a funding proposal. This process involves a lot of work by the Committee but our objective is to have this completed prior to the AGM so that our Members can provide input to what will be – regardless of

the timeframe – a significant decision for our Club.

Despite the terrible weather, there was an excellent turnout for our first ever Ladies Night, Jilly organized this event and given the support, positive feedback and numerous new ideas, it will not be a ‘once off’ event.

April saw the conclusion of the racing for the year, with the last of the Seapower two- handed race and the NSR long distance race. It was arranged that this race would be part of the Whangaroa race with a return leg scheduled for the Sunday.

After a slow start on the Saturday due to lack of wind it was up to California Kiwi to lead the way to Whangaroa. However, handicap results for the keel boat division meant that Straw Camel were credited with the handicap win.

The story was much the same for the Sunday race- a 10.00 am start was scheduled, but on a dying breeze there was little chance of any boat finishing within the time limit. So the iron sail was employed by all boats so they could return to Opua before dark.

It appeared that Savant made a sensible choice on the Sunday by going fishing instead of starting the race. I hope they had a more successful day!

The new sailing committee will look at the racing programme for next season in consul-tation with our Members to find out what type of racing and other activities they want. Should we have more windward/ leeward

courses, shorter series or more variety and “fun” races.

If you have any suggestions you can send to the race officer via email to: raceofficer@opuacruising club.co.nz or speak to your fleet captain.

A division- Paul SmithB division- Andy VanasheC division- Wayne LimbrickLadies - Anna Romeyn

We will also be looking into the Startbox operation and calling for volunteers to help out. If we have a good response then you may only have to volunteer once during the season.

We have been approached by YNZ to host a Race Management seminar that will offer training for Club Race Officers that can lead to National Race Officer qualifications. There is no charge for this two day workshop and even if you don’t want Race Officer qualifications it is still great for skippers to learn more about starts and course setting and the racing rules. Please let Judy know if you are interested by email to: [email protected]

Finally, I look forward to meeting you all out on the water for the start of Winter Racing with the NSR Series, the Women’s Winter Series and last but by no means least the final race of the Fisher & Pykel Interclub series where OCC holds a slender lead.

YOUTH SAILING Robbs Hielkema

Youth sailing has been growing and grow-ing. We had 21 sailors attend our biggest ever session this month. This has meant we have had 3 sailors at a time in the splash and 420’s which the kids are really enjoying.

It’s really interesting to see how much more social kids are these days. They love to be in group situations which is a move away from when I was a kid and everyone wanted to sail on their own. The team work and sailing skills progress quickly when they bounce off each other like this.

We encourage anyone who is keen to join in

with sailing on a Monday night if you are from a cruising boat or a local school we would love to get you in the water.

The first time is free. (To see if you like it)From then on you can choose to pay $5 on the day. Or join the Opua Cruising Club as a junior or family member.

We have a big group of Opua sailors who will be attending the school holiday sailing pro-gram and will get a chance to sail with the kids from the Bay of Islands yacht club. This will hopefully breed some great friendships and on water rivalries between all the kids in the bay.

MARINA DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Quite a few milestones completed this report.

The last of the marina berths have been com-pleted with J Pier now available. The only remaining water based development is the work associated with the new ramp pontoon and the inner pontoon creating the dinghy dock.

The new balustrade is going up at present and complements the new pier gates. All piers are being re-signed with a stylised fish resident in the local waters but also retain the existing alphabetical representation.

All the dredging is now completed which included the first maintenance dredging done in stage 1 which was removing the hump between E and F Piers in the fairway.

The reclamation will now settle from the ad-ditional dredgings and be prepared for some additional imported material to complete to height.

Shortly after this landscaping will commence as will the formation of the secondary car park area.

We are currently looking to place a water sup-ply point on the end of J Pier – this will take some pressure off the fuel dock.

The security gates will become active in the next month.

A formal opening date is yet to be firmed up but is not too far away – will let you all know and hope to see you there.

BOISW UPDATESome of you may have heard there are changes underway at Bay of Islands Sailing Week. After many years of faithful service, Ray and Lesley Haslar (KKCC) and John Grant (RBC), are stepping down from the organising Committee.

That leaves the doop open for a new Regatta Director, and also a Principal Race Officer, for the event.

These positions will be decided at the BOISW AGM, but we’re pleased to say our very own Manuela Gmuer-Hornell is in the running for Regatta Director, and Judy Lymbery has put her hand up to help with the Race Officer role. Many thanks to both of you and we look forward to seeing you (in person or ‘virtually’ as may be the case for Manuela!) at the forthcoming AGM on 22 May, 6pm at BOIYC.

We provide expert services to local and overseas yachts. You can rely on our expertise and products. Our complete range of facilities allow us to service all of your spar and rigging needs.

Did You Know...Most of us know the distress call ‘MAYDAY’ comes from the French “m’aider” or “help me”.

But did you know the urgency call “PAN-PAN” also comes from the French “panne”, meaning “break-down”?

MAY CALENDAR SPONSOR

Peter Boyd is the Doyle Sails representative in the Bay of Islands.

On completing his sail making/marine trim-ming apprenticeship Peter headed offshore to compete in many regattas and ocean races. After returning to Auckland, he started a marine trimming business, which was sold to a major sail loft after 14 years. Having managed that operation for a further three years, 10 years ago he then relocated to the Bay of Islands where he established South Pacific Marine Canvas and Upholstery, which services a wide range of local and offshore cruising yachts and launches. Over his career Peter has clocked over 100,000NM, contesting in many offshore races and undertaking island cruising. Un-surprisingly, this wealth of experience means Peter has a vast knowledge of what is require when racing and cruising, both local and off-shore, and has also recently been appointed a safety inspector for Yachting New Zealand.

Doyle Sails NZ offers a full range of cruising and racing sail options for yachts of all sizes. The Bay of Islands operation will see dedi-cated focus on supporting the cruising sector. Doyle’s GPc cruising range is increasingly the choice for those looking for long-lasting cruising sails that have added performance benefits.

In 2014 Laissez Faire 2, with a full Doyle Stratis ICE cruising inventory, had a convinc-

ing overall win at Musket Cove Fiji Regatta Week. This win followed Laissez-Faire 2 covering over 12,000nm in two years, includ-ing two return trips from Auckland to Fiji, without any compromise in sail performance.

Thanks to all who attended the Ladies’ Night and showed your support. Luckily the horrible weather didn’t stop us having a fun evening!

We had a range of gifts and products on show, including Revlon and Dr LeWinns free facials.

Some nibbles were available and cocktails at the bar went down a treat. We had a few games to play and a manicure table with a wide selection of polishes available.

The evening ended with a hilarious movie “Bridget Jones’ Baby,” and everyone had a goodie bag to take home.

We hope we can organise another Ladies’ Night in future. If you would like to be in-
