Health Ministry - Greetings on Mother's Day! Mothers must be valued everyday. A mother should be

surrounded by a loving and respectful father. Giving

birth and nurturing a child until his or her maturity is the

biggest responsibility for parents. From the moment of

conception, the embryo is vulnerable to any trauma the

expectant mother may experience. The young parents

relationship is very important at this time. Any discord

could result in primary impairment of the child;

superimpose itself on some defect or come chronic

illness or disability. Impairment can be minimal or the

child could be seriously impaired for life. After birth,

the child should be given age appropriate care. Too

much care can be as harmful as not enough care -

protection, but gradual maturing allowed with the

assurance of love and support. There are parts of the

world where women (mothers) are considered lower

beings. Yet they, and only they, are the ones who can

give birth to a child and nurture it. Bowen Natural Family System Theory's concept: Family Projection Process,

Dear Members of St. John’s,

Please hear the words from Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by

prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace

of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ

Jesus.” These are powerful words from Paul and wonderful wisdom for us as we approach the

summer months.

First let me thank you all for your support of my upcoming sabbatical. I will be leaving after the 11:00 worship service on

May 14th and will return on Sunday, August 27

th. While I am away, I will not be attending worship, officiating at any

funeral/memorial services, or attending any church meetings or events. The council, in consultation with Pastor Emily,

will be handling many of the decisions and duties that I typically handle.

During my sabbatical I will be focusing on strengthening and renewing my covenantal relationships, three big promises I

have made with God: my baptism, my marriage and my ordination. Much time will be spent embracing God’s will for me

as a child of God, as a husband and parent, and discerning my role as a pastor called to Word and Sacrament ministry. I

plan to spend time at Duke University, visiting other pastors, reading and learning more about the Native American

culture, time in Orlando with family, time in Alaska with Carolyn, and much more time in prayerful conversation which

will help me deepen my relationship with God. This time away comes as I celebrate being 51 years old, our 26th Wedding

anniversary, and on June 9th, the 20

th anniversary of my ordination.

As you and I prepare for this new experience, I hope we can do so with confidence and excitement. I know venturing into

the unknown may seem a bit worrisome, so that is why I share the above scripture with you as I did with Council in April.

I truly believe that “in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving” we can let our “requests be made

known to God”. And when we do this, when we redirect our worries and concerns to God, we will feel “the peace of

God” embrace our lives and guide us through whatever happens in the uncertain future.

I will keep Pastor Emily, the staff, the council and all of you in my prayers as you work together with God’s wisdom and

guidance. Please keep me, Carolyn, Megan and Nathan in your prayers too. May God bless and strengthen us.

Peace,

Pastor Mike

Growing Our Future Capital Campaign As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live

your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, and established in the

Kids and Youth Classes

Classes for Pre-K through 5th grade are in the hallway below the Fellowship Hall. Our SparkHouse

curriculum connects kids with the same stories they’ll hear in worship each week, so that the

lessons are more easily learned and remembered. Each class is tailored to its age-level with caring

and fun teachers and hands-on learning opportunities.

Confirmation Class for grades 6 through 8 are upstairs, above the staff offices. Pastor Emily will

lead this year’s study of the Old Testament and other topics.

High School Students meet in the Youth Room of the Parish Life Center with Corey Carson

and Kevin Lageman for discussions about life topics and current videos.

Adult Classes

Young Adult Bible Study meets in the Parlor to look at the Sunday readings together. This conversational group is led by

a team of facilitators. Everyone past their high school years through their 20s and 30s are welcome to come every week

or to jump in and out as their other commitments at St. John’s might require.

Alpha & Omega, led by Judy Lybrand, meets in L08 (below the sanctuary). This is a thorough and friendly study that

walks the whole Bible through chapter by chapter. This is an ongoing course that is always welcoming to new

participants.

Contemporary Discussions meets in the PLC Senior Room under the aegis of Dick Conn. This lively class seeks to relate

current world events to God's Word and enjoys a good conversation and a good cup of coffee. Contemporary Discussions

is an ongoing course and there’s always room at the table for one more.

Martin's Table, in the PLC Conference Room, is a multi-generational class is dedicated to providing short-term studies on

various topics in the spirit and tradition of teaching, debate, and discussion found at Martin Luther's own table. Many of

their sessions this year will be in preparation for 2017’s 500th anniversary of the Reformation. April 23-May 28, Martin’s

table will continue its study of the Reformation. In the next section, we will consider the other reformers of the

reformation and their conflict and/or agreement with Luther. Be with us as Jim Milligan leads us in the study of Calvin,

Zwingli, Henry VIII, as well as the counter-reformation of the Catholic Church.

Living the Christian Life meets in the Downstairs Conference Room, under the sanctuary. This track will rotate by topic

and teacher, and seeks to encourage students to think through how their faith impacts their everyday life. April 23-May

28, Benji Mills will lead a discussion of Partnering With the King, a study of Matthew’s Gospel.

Maundy Thursday - The Living Last Supper

Maundy Thursday in April was a moving experience for those who attended the drama of the Living Last Supper. Under

the direction of Sue Kurz, St. John's presented this drama in the PLC as part of Holy Week worship in preparation for

Easter. It was an incredible performance with opening words by Pastor Emily Edenfield and performed by very talented

men of St. John's. A beautiful finale came with Martin Aigner singing "The Lord's Prayer" accompanied by Frankie Deal

on piano. Thank you to everyone who was involved behind the scenes and the actors during this performance...it was quite

memorable! Please visit St. John's Lutheran Church on Facebook for more photos.

March and April brought their usual uncertain weather patterns. We expect and

sincerely appreciate these gifts of snow, rain and cold or sun, humidity and warmth

from God each year. And, additional pleasant surprise gifts are always welcome.

Martin Luther said that “Money will follow the heart. He who has given someone his

heart will also give him his purse.” People who give freely their time and talent will

surely give their money. Good stewardship is seen throughout our congregation.

St. John’s has been the beneficiary of several generous contributions from estates of

former members who were known to give from their hearts. Undesignated gifts totaling $382,466 from the estates of

Dorothy Alexander, Joseph Sayre and Dorothy Kraft have been received. Also, we will be receiving another substantial

gift from the estate of Jan Porter later this year designated to our mortgage debt and the endowment fund. Let us

praise God for these acts of stewardship and ask for his continued blessings.

HISTORY IN ACTION or . . . A Blast from theA Blast from theA Blast from theA Blast from the Past! Past! Past! Past!

by Judy Lybrand, Archives

This month, we learn the second surprise about Martin Luther from the article, “Martin Luther’s Seven Surprises,” by

Timothy J. Wengert, which appeared in Lutheran Woman Today in October 1992 to commemorate the 475th anniversary of the start of

the Reformation. This year, we celebrate the 500th anniversary and will enjoy his message, which notes the change in perspective

Luther had on religion. We started last month will learn new a surprise each month for seven months, concluding in October.

What surprises many Lutherans about Luther is what he actually taught and how that teaching so excited Christians in his day.

Surprise #2: God’s Word Works Death and Life on Us.

Luther’s encounter with the crucified God convinced him that human attempts to explain God always tame God. That becomes

most painfully clear when human beings get their hands on God’s word in the Bible and make up their minds that we must do

something to it to make it work. Then the Bible becomes an answer book telling us what to think, or a rule book telling us what

to do, or a crystal ball telling us what to expect.

In Luther’s encounter with God’s Word, the Word fought back, leapt off the page and did something to him! This was

especially true of Romans 1:17 (“For in [the gospel] the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith….” New

Revised Standard Version), which condemned Luther’s own unrighteousness and gave him God’s righteousness as a gift.

God’s Word, he later reflected, is not a noun but a verb; it does something to us. What God Does through that Word first

is an alien deed. Through the Law God kills the rebel in us, what Paul calls “our old self” (Romans 6:6) by confronting us

with our sin. Then through the gospel, the good news, God does a deed appropriate to God’s nature, making us alive as

new people of faith and consoling us with the promise of forgiveness, life, and salvation.

Elizabeth Cruciger, who contributed to the first evangelical hymnal printed in 1524, used the following shocking language

to describe God’s working word: “Kill us through your own goodness; Awaken us through grace. Bring to the old such

sickness, That we new life embrace.”*

*(“Herr Christ der Einig Gotts Sohn,” translated by the author. Lutheran Book of Worship 86, “The Only Son from Heaven,” is a very loose

paraphrase of this hymn, but does not include this verse.)

Coming Soon! Beginning May 4th at 7:00pm in the PLC Conference Room we will

join Jim Milligan to discuss and learn about Handle's Messiah. Be with us on

Thursday evenings, to explore Georg Friedrich Handel; The man, the Music, and the Bible

used in the Messiah. The topics will include the following: Week one – Handel the man,

an introduction to the Messiah looking at its structure. Weeks two through four will

examine the Bible verses behind the Messiah. Week five will consider the question, “What

have we done to the Messiah?” and examine three modern versions of the work as

contrasted with the original. Videos will be used to allow us to hear and see portions of this

great work. For additional information, contact Jim Milligan, he may be reached

at [email protected], by telephone (864) 703-1101 or on Sunday mornings.
