Danielle Bull was 29, had a secure job and a healthy
savings account when she decided to break out and do something for her. She knew there was something more in life than being a paralegal; that wasn’t her calling. That’s how Bull’s Tavern got its start. She wanted a venue for great live music with great craft beer, great craft cocktails and a fantastic atmosphere. And, that, is exactly what she has.Now, four years later, Danielle is in the middle of what she calls the “Fourth Year Facelift.” The reason was to make the bar more accessible to those who not only frequent the bar, but for the employees that work there. The bar itself is a thing of beauty and was made by her father, Darrell Bull. Most of the major renovations that have been going on inside Bull’s Tavern have been spearheaded by Mr. Bull. Danielle felt like they needed to change things behind the bar, so they removed all the fixtures and flooring. They stripped down to the original 1925 hardwood and replaced the antiquated floor covering. It’s more comfortable for the bartenders which will mean a more pleasant experience for the patrons. Danielle confided that she is, in her words, “somewhat of a beer connoisseur.” That was proven to be the case when she started explaining the brews that have taken up residence in the newly installed 24-tap long-draw system. 24 glorious beers that will be an added attraction for others that deem themselves “connoisseurs.” Including
cans, there are approximately 70 beers to choose from at Bull’s Tavern. Coming soon – wine on tap. Complementing an already awesome sound system, they’re adding an arsenal of stage lights to enhance the show experience. There will also be some changes to the outside area, which right now has some benches creating a berm/patio. There will be wrought-iron fencing to create a more aesthetically pleasing atmosphere that leads the patrons directly into Bull’s Tavern and not leading them around turns;

the way they have to enter, now. This, and a brand new sign will make the establishment a “place to be,” even more so than it is now, not just musically but visually from the street. Some events that allow you to enjoy this WSNC staple are: the Family Jam that happens every Tuesday; Kostume Karaoke (the weirder the better) on Wednesday; big name and regional bands such as People’s Blues of Richmond, Norlina, Dale and the ZDubz and Brothers Pearl. Big things are happening at Bull’s Tavern. Danielle takes her entire staff on vacation each year and really takes care of those who take care of her. When asked about what she wanted others to know about Bull’s Tavern, she said, “Everyone behind the scenes is “family.” A lot of hard work makes it a place for everyone; older, younger, all music styles with an eclectic music line up. It really is a place for everybody.” This reporter agrees.Bull’s Tavern is open 7 days a week at 4pm and is located at 408 W 4th St, Winston-Salem. You can find them on the web at www.bullswsnc.com

Wicked Weed BrewingFrom Spencer: Wicked Weed Brewing is located in Asheville NC and the dream of opening a brewery started in 2009 with two brothers, a friend and their parents. Their vision of West Coast style ales and Belgian ales are now one of the hottest and most sought after beers in America. These guys continue to brew new award winning beers that are very allocated and challenge the craft beer drinker to enjoy unique beers.The Milk and Cookies is an Imperial Stout that is brewed with raisins, cinnamon and vanilla. This beer is a smooth Imperial Stout with vanilla notes that reminds me of freshly baked cookies with just the right amount of spice on the long finish. Milk and Cookies is usually released around the Christmas holidays just in time for Santa to enjoy. ABV 8.5%From Tim: I’ve not had this on The Less Desirables, yet, but I have had it. I thought it was a wonderful mix of the vanilla and cinnamon, but it was a littler “fluffier” in flavor than that. I swear I tasted marshmallows in there. It was rich, it was creamy. Very dark in color and at 8.5% ABV, you get the very front of that bite of the alcohol flavor that comes with higher gravity brews. It’s not something you are going drink many of in one sitting. It is something, however, that you’d want to use as a good conversation piece with your beer buddies (and beer ladies). I love Imperial Stouts because of the flavor and body (and ABV) that many of the mainstream stouts have. Slàinte!
