‘ROUND THE BENZ

After four Formula One races, Team Mer-cedes AMG has won three and Ferrari one, but it’s clear that Ferrari has greatly improved from last year and

almost has the speed to match Mer-cedes. Last year the gap between Team Mercedes and the rest of the field was at least one second per lap. I know, one second per lap doesn’t seem like a huge difference, but if a race is sixty laps, for example, that means that at the end, the Silver Arrows were one minute clear of the rest of the field. In a race, one minute ahead is an eternity.

The 2015 season is on their spring break and the season will resume on May 10 for the Spanish Grand Prix to kick off the super European schedule of races. Team Mercedes should still win the 2015 cham-pionship, but it won’t be the 2014 cake walk. They will have to have smarter race strategy, i.e., which set of tires and how long to run on each set, and timely pit stops, and above all, quick pit stops. Ferrari’s pit stops have been quicker than Mercedes so far this season, and with the lap speeds so much closer, you can lose a race in the pits.

Speaking of pit stops, it was good to see so many members take adantage of our Spring Do-It-Yourself Tech Ses-sion on Sunday, 26 April, again hosted

by Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. I was able to take care of many spring maintenance items on my ML 320 - tire rotation, wiper blade replacement, and the gas struts on the hood and tailgate. And like all Pikes Peak Section mem-bers, I received a 20% discount on parts, courtesy of Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. If you missed this event, we will do it again on November 22 for our Fall DIY Tech Session.

Our highlight event for this month is the 16 May tour of the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, CO. After breakfast at the Egg & I restaurant, we’ll drive up to Golden for the tour. This should be interesting and a lot of fun. I’ve lived in Colorado for over 20 years and haven’t visited this museum yet. Since I’m an avid railroad buff, I’m looking forward to it. Don’t wait, please RSVP because based on the number in our group, a tour guide and admission discount may be available.

Phase II of our Paved Peaks & Passes driving program is off to a great start. We’ve got 12 teams signed up so far for the Points of Interest (POI) passport and they have driven to 77 points of interest to date. These drives to small-town Colo-rado are scenic and educational, and as the summer driving season gets going, the perfect excuse to take that Star car on the road. Pick up your passport to a fun summer driving season today. Con-tact Judy Bennett to get your passport.

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

Star Party - 20 June 2015Have you ever seen the Milky Way? Do you know what the Milky Way is? Can you find the North Star? What about the Big Dipper? Do you know where to look? Hint, it’s not in the cooking utensil drawer or the pantry.

If you don’t know what or where they are, then you need to join us for the second annual Star Car Star Party on Saturday, 20 June 2015. Once again we’ll gather at Absher Acres in Peyton. If we have nice clear weather we’ll show you all the above items.

Bring your favorite significant other in your Star car for an evening under the stars. We will be having a small pot luck - bring a fa-vorite dish along to share with other mem-bers. There will be a $5 per person charge to cover drinks and other odds and ends. We’ll have hot dogs with my wife’s special hot dog sauce and cold drinks. If you want something a little harder than soft drinks, you’ll need to bring it along. Please be sure to have a designated driver. We may have a few other surprises in store for you as

well. You’ll have to wait and see what they are.

After the sun goes down (and the weather permits), you’ll have the chance to look through our telescopes to see some won-

drous sights in the nighttime sky.

So bring your lawn chair, sit out under the stars, and talk with friends while looking up. I would also recommend you bring a jacket and mosquito repellent. You know how cool it can be when the sun goes down. If you’ve got binocu-lars, bring them too - you’ll be amazed at what you can see.

Mark 20 June 2015 on your calendar for the second annual Star Car Star Party. You’re in for a pleasant drive to and from the event, then a nice evening with good food and friends. Look for more information and directions in next month’s newsletter. For more information or to sign up, please contact Ken Sheehan at 719-433-9025 or email him at [email protected]

Paint the Town - 12 June 2015Join us on Friday, June 12, for a fun and unique get-together at Paint the Town, 7844 N. Academy Blvd (just south of Jamboree) from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. This is a first for our Section and we know every-one will discover his or her inner artist - we all have one, you know.

Each person will get a 16”x20” canvas, paints, and paint-ing supplies. The owners will guide us step-by-step through the creative process. Each person picks their own picture to paint - check this link for choices (http://www.paint-the-town.com/party-paintings/)

- and there will be additional options for car enthusiasts. Take home your beautiful masterpiece and show it off to your friends

and family. They’ll be so impressed!

Cost is $35 per per-son, which includes the painting, all sup-plies, and a meal. It’s BYOB, so bring your wine, beer, soda, or whatever you want to drink.

Reserve your easel today; space is limited. Call Dan Kerbs at 719-964-5956, or email him at [email protected]. Don’t miss this fun-filled evening.

“...converted

Mark your calendar, everyone - you’re in for a real treat. On Saturday, 11 July 2015, The Pikes Peak Section will host the an-nual Joint Section Picnic at Maguireville in Monument, Colorado.

Maguireville began many years ago when Jim and Donna Maguire purchased a horse ranch just east of I-25 in Monument. Donna set out to furnish the house with antiques from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Jim caught the bug and from there the bug just grew and grew.

The interior of the barn was made over into a large social area surrounded by the original horse stalls converted into reproductions of businesses from rural America. Each busi-ness is fully outfitted with original furnish-ings that Jim has collected over the years.

As Jim turned over more of his owner-ship responsibilities at Overhead Door to his son Kevin, this gave him more time to collect memorabilia for Maguireville, and

collect he did, and still does.

A friend who was making his first visit to Maguireville recently stated, “This is one of the best kept secrets in El Paso County.” For more information on Maguireville, ac-cess the Web.

If you would like to spend a few hours with old and new Star friends, enjoying catered barbeque while surrounded by memora-bilia from your parents’ and grandparents’ era, plan to attend this year’s Joint Section Picnic.

All you need to do is RSVP by July 6, 2015, and arrive with $10 for each adult and $5 for each child under 12. Plan to arrive between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. Food will be served at 1:00 p.m.

To RSVP, contact Clark or Karen Absher at 719-749-2621, or [email protected]. Directions to Maguireville will be provided in next month’s newsletter.

Joint Section Picnic - 11 July 2015

The 2015 President’s Rally is coming soon. This year’s theme is inspired by the 1980s “Back to the Future” movie trilogy.

In “Back to the Future II”, Marty and Doc traveled ahead thirty years into the future, from 1985 to 2015. In the 2015 movie future, people drove flying cars, rode hoverboard-type skateboards, and used Mr. Fusion compact power supply units. Obviously, our 2015 is quite different from that vision, but it will make for great rally ques-

tions.

The movies covered the years 1885, 1955, 1985 and 2015; the rally questions will be about those same years. Questions and clues will cover movie trivia and Mercedes-Benz-related his-tory from those years. The rally should take 2-3 hours, ending with lunch at an appropriate restaurant. The cost is $10 per car. Please RSVP to Andrew Nelson, 719-634-7522 (home), or [email protected].

Wine-Making Made Easy - TBD September 2015The owners of Old West Homebrew Supply have reserved, for the Pikes Peak Section, their popular wine-making class for the month of September. The class takes the mystery out of wine making with a hands-on 3-hour evening session in a re-laxed environment. Participants will sample a variety of wines, eat hors d’oeurves and desserts with port wine. At the end of the class you get to take a bottle of wine home as an extra bonus. Enjoy all of this for a small class fee of $29.95/person.

The course provides instruction on the equipment, techniques, supplies, and methods you need to transform a Wine Expert wine kit into over 2 dozen bottles of enjoyable and high quality wine.

There are only 12 seats available for this class, and early registration and payment is required. More information about the class will be provided in upcoming news-letters. The point of contact for this class is Gary Gagnon, 719.282.9313 or [email protected].

Denver Nature & Science Museum - 15 August 2015The Denver Nature & Science Museum is the destination for our August Fun Run. After our monthly breakfast we’ll travel to Denver where we will explore exhibits on dragons, unicorns, and mermaids; the Silk Road; Egyptian mummies; and North American Indian cultures, just to name a few.

A wide variety of exhibitions, programs, and activities help museum visitors learn about the natural history of Colo-

rado, Earth, and the universe. The 500,000-square-foot building houses more than one million ob-jects in its collections including natural history and anthro-pological materials, as well as archival and library resources. Plan to join us on this very edifying trip.

President’s Rally - 18 July 2015

Drive-In Movie - 6 September 2015The Mountains, Movies & Mercedes Re-gional Event of last year was such a suc-cess that we can’t begin to duplicate it. So this year, we’re going to throttle back just a little on our annual Drive-In Movie event. This may be the last year for this iconic event, so mark this date on your calendar and join us for a top down (and sunroofs open) fun-filled evening.

Once again, we’ll gather at Dan & Cheryl Kerbs’ homestead for dinner and a movie - Pikes Peak Section-style. Plans are still being formulated, but we’ll have steaks on the barbie and accompanying side dishes along with suitable beverages, adult and otherwise. Line up your Star car and grab some popcorn as you relax under the stars. It’s one of the best times you’ll have all year.

Pikes Peak Section Enchanted Weekend

“Highlights

Byway and

Winery....”

The Pikes Peak Section is headed south to New Mexico this Fall for a 3-day regional event called The Enchanted Weekend. We plan to leave Colorado Springs on Friday, 9 October for Taos, NM. Highlights of the weekend include driving the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway and visiting the Black Mesa Winery and other points of local inter-est.

The Enchanted Circle is an 83-mile loop through mountains, valleys, mesa, and national forest, all unique to northern New Mexico. We’ll drive from Taos to Questa via Red River, Eagle Nest and Angel Fire. This beautiful countryside offers dramatic moun-tain vistas of aspen and pine in the shadow of 13,000-ft Wheeler Peak, the highest point in the state.

Then it’s a 37-mile drive down a winding canyon road along the Rio Grand River to the Black Mesa Winery. Black Mesa Win-ery has garnered multiple “Best of Show”, “Best in Class” awards, and “Double Gold” and gold medals in international competi-tion. Black Mesa’s wines meet the high-

est standards for wine, not only for New Mexico, but also on the international stage. Need more activities? Taos Pueblo is a living Native American community and National Historic Landmark. The multi-story adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over a 1,000 years.

We will be staying at the historic La Fonda de Taos Hotel on the Plaza. Our renowned hospitality suite will be open on Friday and Saturday nights before and after dinner. The event cost for this weekend is $37 per person and includes a continental breakfast, box lunch, snacks and drinks in the hospitality suite for two nights, dash plaques and prizes. We plan to return home Sunday, although it’s possible to stay over to Monday and have breakfast with anyone who wants to spend Sunday shop-ping or sightseeing.

Contact Dave Carpenter at [email protected] for more information or to sign up. Registration deadline is 1 September 2015. Please plan to join us for this delightfully enchanted weekend.

Shelby Museum Recap It’s been a while since we motored north to visit the Shelby American Collection in

Boulder and this visit was well worth the trip. Pikes Peak Section members made the drive after our April breakfast. The col-

lection is awe-inspiring and it was great to see the gleam in the eyes of some of our younger members.

We then adjourned to the Leanin’ Tree Mu-seum, 3 blocks away, to visit the extensive collection of sculptures and paintings that make up the founder’s collection. It would be easy to spend an entire day there, but lunch awaited.

We made it to Oskar Blues for some stick-to-your-ribs (literally) food and adult beverages before our drive home. It was a beautiful day for a drive and we thank Gary Gagnon for setting it all up for us.

Mercedes owners appreciate German en-gineering and are not averse to the hands-on approach to taking care of their cars. Ten Pikes Peak Section owners showed up on 26 April at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs for our Spring Do-It-Yourself Tech Session, thereby saving ourselves hun-dreds, if not thousands, of dollars in needed repairs.

On a rainy Sunday morning, we welcomed

repeat customers as well as first-timers. After snacking on donuts and coffee, cour-tesy of Dave Williamson, we got to work. We performed oil changes, changed spark plugs, replaced oil filters, did a B-service, replaced gas struts, rotated tires, fixed air conditioners, and installed new lug nuts. Whew! That’s a lot of maintenance. Many thanks to Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs for showing us how it’s done!

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class compact premium car was recently selected as the World Car of the Year for 2015 from final-ists that included the new Ford Mustang and Volkswagen Passat.

A jury of 75 international automotive jour-nalists from 22 countries made their choic-es from an initial list of two dozen car mod-els in the competition that was narrowed to 12 and then to three models this year. During the awards presentation, World Car jurors noted that the C-Class takes its design and technological cues from the S-Class large premium sedan. They pointed out that the C-Class is built on an “all-new aluminum/steel hybrid platform with up-dated rear-drive powertrains and delivers a refined, luxury, safe ride and handling.”

The C-Class (sedan and coupe family) is one of the Daimler brand’s best-selling models worldwide. Through the first three months of 2015, C-Class sales in the Unit-ed States were 20,943 units vs. 17,029 unit sales a year ago, according to J.D. Power

and LMC Automotive. The model is now produced at the Mercedes plant in Tusca-loosa, Alabama, in addition to being built at the Daimler plant in Bremen, Germany.

In addition to the overall World Car of the Year honor, Mercedes-Benz captured two other awards. The Mercedes S-Class coupe received the 2015 World Luxury Car award. The other two finalists in this category were the BMW i8 and Land Rover Range Rover Autobiog-raphy Black LWB.

Also, Mercedes’ AMG GT was singled out as the World Performance Car of the Year over the BMW M4 Coupe/M3 Sedan and Jaguar F-Type R Coupe.

Mercedes-Benz is officially working on a pickup truck, though whether or not the vehicle will make it to the U.S. is still up in the air. A few things we do know about the pickup is that it will be a mid-size model and feature a dual-cab design, as indicated in the official teaser sketch below.

Mercedes has also confirmed that the pickup will be based on a body-on-frame platform shared with the next-generation Nissan NP300 (a Navara in certain mar-kets), and that production will take place at plants in Argentina and Spain.

Now, we have a few more details by way of an interview by CAR with the head of Mercedes’ commercial vehicles unit, Volker Mornhinweg. In the interview, Mornhinweg

explained that Mercedes didn’t want to develop a “fat cowboy truck” for the North American market, which is dominated by the Detroit 3 brands. That’s why Mercedes has chosen to focus on the Australian, European, Latin American and South Afri-can markets, where mid-size pickups also double as premium lifestyle vehicles.

Mornhinweg didn’t say what volumes Mer-cedes is expecting for the vehicle but did point out that globally, the mid-size pickup segment sees about 2.3 million sales an-nually and that most of these are for Toyota products.

CAR goes on to report that the pickup will be badged a “GLT” and that it will offer four- and six-cylinder engines, presumably in gasoline and diesel flavors. There will also allegedly be three different trim levels to choose from, aimed at utility, dual-purpose use and leisure respectively. The report also claims that beyond a standard live rear axle, buyers will be able to opt for indepen-dent rear suspension as well as all-wheel drive.

The Mercedes pickup is due to arrive near the end of the decade. A decision on a U.S. launch will be made by the end of this year.

Mercedes Sets Sales RecordLuxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz saw its highest monthly sales ever in March 2015. The brand owned by Daimler AG got a boost from a recovering auto market in Europe and a big increase in China.

Mercedes-Benz sold 183,467 vehicles in March worldwide. That’s an increase of 15.7 percent from the same month a year earlier.

The sales numbers were boosted by strong growth in Asia and in Europe, still the com-pany’s biggest market. Europe sales rose 16.3 percent while China alone was up 20.8 percent.

The company said Wednesday it saw stronger sales across its small-car lineup

including the A-Class, B-Class, CLA and GLA. March volume leaders for Mercedes-Benz included the C-, E- and M-Class model lines. The C-Class held the lead with 7,635 units, increasing 34.9% from the 5,660 units sold in March 2014. The E-Class followed with sales of 4,489, while the M-Class, to be succeeded by the GLE this summer, rounded out the top three at 4,023. At the high end, G-Class sales increased 13.7%.

Europe’s car market is showing signs of life again after several years of decline during the continent’s crisis over high government debt.
