INTERNET UPGRADEThe NBTC has invested in a new Fiber Optic Internet Line, scheduled to be ready on May 19th. Now you can enjoy faster FREE internet here at the club!

To schedule a lesson or participate in a clinic, see the back of the newsletter for contact info

Could we be any more busy? On the maintenance front, we have begun our official SpriNG CLEaNiNG, but this year it seems to be on steroids! Our first major project was a big one, as we patched and re-surfaced court 15. The infrastructure had been compromised and it was a big job, but our crack maintenance department (no pun attended) did a fantastic job breathing new life into the court. along

the same fronts, we are in the midst of resurfacing courts 1-4, with completion being around may 20th. and, don’t forget about the net posts, which are also getting a fresh coat of “hunter green”, as are all the railings on court 1. it’s going to look unbelievable once it’s done.

You may notice we updated our hallway with new photos of the staff pros and we re-painted most of the dining room, bar, gym, and card room. additional small changes are coming for the interior of the club, so stay tuned! The Spring Cleaning has even extended out to the outdoor areas, where we are painting the pool bar, planning to repaint the pool deck in mid may and planting water conscious plants in prepara-tion for the summer months ahead. i would be amiss if i didn’t acknowledge the tireless efforts of heather Nalle and Steve Joyce in running the fall Calcutta to great success. it was one of the most organized and fuN Cal-cutta’s in recent memories. its not easy running a tournament and bidding party of 160 players with big money on the line. Congratulations to the winning teams and thank you once again to the captains for their efforts. also, great job to Jenna Taylor and Laurie moroch who won Captain of the Calcutta honors. remember, that 10 percent of the money for the event, or $1500 will be donated to the Ocean institute, to help save our oceans. as for may’s calendar of events, we have our Doubles Cham-pionships on may 2-3, (with prime-Time finals the following week), then the pro-Exo on friday, may 8th with rickie and Scotty, mother’s Day Brunch on the 10th, Grand prix League finals on the 17th, then capped off by the largest Charity tennis event in So-Cal: The adoption Guild Tennis Classic, 23-25, 30-31. it’s going to be a blast! we’d like to announce that in the works is a New member-Existing member mixer, on either friday or Saturday night. This mixer will put existing members together with new members. we’re still working out the details, but stay tuned to your e-mail. also, starting this month on wednesday, may 13th at 5pm is our New-member So-cial. all new members will get an email invite to join us for some free wine, light hors d’oeuvre and a chance to meet board members, staff and other members. This will be a great opportunity for new mem-bers to get acquanted with the club and hopefully make some friends in the process. On the employee front, please do welcome Carrie perkins as she has taken over the court desk and front desk management functions. we are thrilled to have her and is already making a positive impact to service. Lastly, happy trails to ross. we’ll miss you mate!

Carrie Perkins has been named Manager of the Court Directors and Front Desk Department. From Carrie, “i’m absolutely thrilled to be here... i started playing tennis as an adult in 2007 and i totally fell in love with the sport. Being able to

combine my 15 year management/receptionist professional experience and my favorite hobby all in one place is fantastic. i’ve met so many members already and i can’t wait to meet even more. See you on the courts!

FRANKLAFERLA

NBTC member frank m. Laferla is the Dean of the uC irvine School of Biological Sciences. professor Laferla is a Chancellor’s professor and former chair of the Department of Neurobi-ology and Behavior since 2011, and joined uC irvine in 1995 as an assis-tant professor. Since that time he has served in numerous leadership roles, including as associate director and now director of uCi miND (institute for memory impairments and Neuro-logical Disorders), a research center internationally acclaimed for its work on disorders of the brain, particularly those that are age-related.

professor Laferla was also founding director of the Neuroscience pro-gram, which united several neuro-science-related departments and faculty under one major initiative and has since facilitated the recruitment to uC irvine of numerous outstand-ing graduate students.

professor Laferla received his ph.D. from the university of minnesota

and his B.a. from St. Joseph’s univer-sity in philadelphia, and has research interests in the molecular biology of alzheimer’s disease and neurode-generative disorders, transgenic and genetically-modified animal models, presenilins and calcium signaling, and learning and memory.

he has received several honors for his research accomplishments, in-cluding the promising work award from the metropolitan Life founda-tion for medical research, the ruth Salta investigator achievement award from the american health assistance foundation, the Zenith fellows award from the alzheimer association, the uCi innovators award, and the Sen-ate Distinguished mid-career faculty research award.

professor Laferla is a fellow of the american association for the advance-ment of Science and an elected mem-ber of the american Neurological as-sociation, the american Society for Cell Biology, the international Society for Stem Cell research, and the Society for Neuroscience. he is a frequent guest speaker at local, national, and interna-tional venues, and is a current member of the board of directors of the Orange County alzheimer’s association and a member of the club since 2011.

The month of april showcased 48 singles matches in total - 24 singles matches from the “a” Di-vision, 17 matches from the “B” Division and 7 matches from the “C” division……(C’mon “C” Divi-sion. The “a” division “iron man” award goes to rob prendergast, as he rallied to a 2-1 mark for the month, outlasting anyone who dared to stay back on the baseline with him. (hint: DON’T) Division “B” april “ironman”, mike palitz also posted a solid 2-1 record for the month (going deep into tiebreak-ers for each win!). in Division “C” ironman Lee Triebwasser took on all comers, playing 3 matches, including matches in our B and C divisions. Great job iron-men!

Just a reminder that last month we moved non-active ladder play-ers down to the bottom of their respective divisions, so there re-ally is no excuse not to claim your appropriate place on the club lad-der. make a call, email and chal-lenge a fellow member TODaY!

The month of may officially kicks off the “prime time” tennis sea-son, and days are getting lon-ger, thus, our 7pm monday Night Singles is mostly played during daylight hours, so if you have trouble with the lights – bring your sunglasses and come on out!

May Singles Strategy: One of the questions that comes up fre-quently in singles play is “how do i beat someone from the baseline if they are better at rallying than i am?” Or, a fairly regular com-ment i hear is, “i don’t like com-ing to the net, so i am just going to stay back” here are a few sug-gestions: 1) if you are playing a baseline player who rallies better than you , don’t try and rally all day with them. hit the ball short and maKE them come to the net! There is a very good chance that if someone is a good baseline player, he/she may probably be uncomfortable at the net, so take them OuT of their comfort zone. start taking more chances, take the fight to your oppo-nent (even if it is a bit uncom-fortable) and do NOT let them hang out in their comfort zone!

The month of may has some great events – Club Doubles and the adoption Guild are two ex-amples, and June offers event more, so try to participate in as many of these events as possible and tune up that singles game for the long, hot Summer ahead!

most importantly, keep it in play!

TENNiS TipThE EFFECTIvENESS OF ThE ChIP RETURN

whether playing singles or doubles, the chip return of serve can be the most effective. Chipping a return of serve often is the easier way to get the point started especially against a serve that comes at you with pace. The chip return, otherwise known as a ‘block” or “slice” is a shorter stroke which means less can go wrong. The key to hitting an effective chip is to avoid taking too big of a backswing and to make sure that your weight is moving forward into the shot. an effective chip return is also one that stays low making it tough for the serve and volleyer to dig out low volleys or for the server who stays back to move up to a short low ball. To keep the ball low on a chip return make sure the racquet face isn’t too open. This will cause the ball to float thus eliminating its effectiveness. also, the chip return can be used as a lob over opposing net player. This strategic tactic keeps the opposing net player honest. They cannot freely close the net every time they see the player chipping their return of serve. a chip is very deceptive because it is difficult to determine whether or not it’s hit low or high. To execute the chip lob simply use a higher and longer follow through. The deception comes from keeping the take back the same.
