A Tip from Angel: Make A Change

By Angel Higbee, Exercise Instructor

Regardless of how well you take care of yourself, time takes a toll on your body. As you age, your muscles

typically weaken, bones become more brittle and your tendons lose elasticity, making you less flexible.

Don‘t wait to make a change! The time is now! Thirty minutes a day is all it takes. A well rounded fitness

program is at your fingertips. Our exercise programs can really benefit your health as well as your mind.

Let me just give you a little insight on what each class can offer:

1. Tai Chi – This program works on your balance, proper breathing tech-

niques, flexibility and training your mind.

2. Ball Fitness – This class is especially good for dealing with arthritis

along with hand- eye coordination. It also works on flexibility.

3. Sit-ercise – This option is a full body workout. It works every muscle from your head to your toes. All of

this while sitting in a chair.

4. Circuit Training – This class is for the people who really want to push their bodies. There is no slack

with this exercise, it‘s all hard work.

Remember, when you exercise every day you eat, sleep and feel better overall. So don‘t delay; get to one

of these classes soon. You can pick up a schedule at the Activity Office or in the exercise room on the se-

cond floor.

And last, but not least, please be sure and bring a bottle of water to class so you can re-hydrate your

body. See you there!

Words to Live By By Dave McElheran, Chaplain

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in

trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give

way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.

Psalm 46:1-2

One thing is sure, God never changes. He was and is and

always will be! No matter what the circumstances He can

be trusted to guide us through the storms of life.

Turmeric: Spice, Medication, or Both? By Brigita Nikolov, Health Services Director

Do you like curry? If you do, you are in luck: one of the main spices in curry—turmeric—was found to be

very beneficial for your health. An orange-colored spice imported from India, Turmeric is part of the ginger

family and has been a staple in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian cooking for thousands of years.

In addition, ayurvedic and Chinese medicines use turmeric to clear infections and inflammations both inside

and outside of the body. Although further research is needed, some preliminary lab studies show turmeric

and curcumin (a substance in turmeric) may be helpful with the following health conditions:

1. Alzheimer's disease

Researchers believe that curcumin's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may be strong enough to

break down the amyloid plaques in the brain that contribute to Alzheimer's disease. Researchers believe if

the blood vessels remain less clogged, then certain parts of the brain might receive oxygen more easily,

keeping the brain functioning more effectively. UCLA‘s Alzheimer's Disease Research Center is currently

planning clinical human trials.

2. Cancer

In his book, The 150 Healthiest Foods On Earth (Fair Winds), nutritionist Jonny Bowden says there are at least

30 studies showing that curcumin may have an anti-tumor effect, "either reducing the number or size of tu-

mors or the percentage of animals that developed them.‖

There are also indications that curcumin may help to prevent breast, skin and pancreatic cancer, childhood

leukemia and multiple myeloma. "While no one is claiming that turmeric cures cancer, there is plenty of rea-

son to believe it is a useful adjunct to a healthy diet," says Bowden.

3. Heart attacks and strokes

Curcumin may also have a positive effect on cholester-

ol, says Bowden. Animal studies have shown that it

may lower cholesterol and prevent the build-up of LDL

(bad cholesterol) in the blood vessels, potentially

stopping the build-up of plaque (atherosclerosis) that

can block arteries and cause heart attacks and strokes.

4. Inflammatory diseases

Turmeric's natural anti-inflammatory qualities mean it

may work as well as some anti-inflammatory medica-

tions, without the side effects. Early research shows it

may help with inflammation of the eye, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and arthritis.

In a multi-center trial, patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either ibuprofen or tur-

meric daily for six weeks. The researchers measured several outcomes, including walking 100 meters and

stair climbing. After six weeks, significant improvements and similar outcomes were observed in both

groups. However, the turmeric group showed slightly better performance on the 100 meter walk, less self-

reported pain going up and down a flight of stairs, and less adverse events. Also, subjects rated themselves

to have higher satisfaction with the treatment results in the turmeric group (91.1%) versus the ibuprofen

group (80.4%).

5. Colds and flu

Preliminary studies show that turmeric may help reduce the severity of bacterial and viral infections.

6. Indigestion and weight loss

Curcumin stimulates the gall bladder and produces bile. Because bile helps digest fat, experts believe this

improves digestion and may help control weight. At least one study found it treats indigestion, reducing

symptoms of bloating and gas.

In the last several years, turmeric is becoming a popular addition to Western style cooking. Turmeric's

roots and bulbs are generally boiled and dried to form powder. You can also grate it like ginger or take a

supplement. Curcumin is also fat soluble, so it may be a good idea to take it with a fatty meal.

King and Queen of Hearts Decree Enjoy the Spring! By King Ted and Queen Deanna Parker, Residents

We are hoping all of our ‗Royal Neighbors‘ are enjoying the beauty of spring ‗springing-up‘ all around us.

Our beautiful Hearthstone landscape has come alive with color and blossoms. Pause and enjoy!

This is the wonderful season of renewal, and may it fill our hearts and thoughts of some renewal within us

too! Maybe think about adding something new to your daily life: a mid-afternoon ‗chocolate kiss‘ or a cup

of tea or a foo-foo Keurig coffee. Think what may bring a smile to your face. Smiles are contagious and a

wonderful contagious!

We want to remember to nourish ourselves mentally and physically. Think of possibly beginning your day

with music or trying a new entrée on the menu, or simply try a new activity. Hearthstone has a vast array of

activities, and the staff is open to new suggestions. Find a game you like to play with a friend or friends in

one of our wonderful alcoves. Angel has a cabinet full of fun games, and it only takes two to play.

Again, we will look forward to the fun and joy of greeting all of you in the dining rooms at our evening

meal on the 14th

with a ‗Royal Chocolate Kiss.‖ Until then, renew!

8 Murrayhill Times | May 2015

This was a portrait photo taken of my mother, Ma-

rie Kipp, and me when I was eight years old. My

mom was secretary to the president of the Federal

Land Bank in St. Louis, which was a branch of the

Farm Credit Administration. My mom had gone

back to work after my Dad lost his job in the 1929

stock market crash.

Shirley Johnson

DEAR MOM,

I LOVE YOU.

This photo was taken in 1981 for my parents 50th wedding

anniversary at the Greenwood Inn in Beaverton.

Standing left to right: Jerry Katzke, Margaret‘s brother; Mar-

garet; Joe Hasson, Margaret‘s husband. Seated left to right:

Margaret‘s grandmother, Bertha Nelson; mother, Helen

Katzke; and father, Jerry Katzke.

Margaret Hasson

My British mother, Nell, was a stickler for respect. One day as

we sat at breakfast, we saw a neighbor hurrying along the

road. Despite the warm summer day, he wore a heavy tweed

coat and cap. He walked quickly, head down, apparently

muttering. ―There goes Galloping Harry,‖ said my brother.

Mum banged the table with her open hand. ―His name is Mr.

Parker and that is what you will call him.‖ She taught us to

respect people for their character regardless of differences.

Jean Bradley (Jean on far left, mother is far right)

We had four generations of family together at this

1971 Christmas gathering. I‘m in the orange dress

with big hair and my mother, Hannah, is holding her

great grandchild. The photo also includes my dad

(far left) and my son, Dan, the proud father of Beth

and new baby.

Anna’s Place Moments

The Very Magical World of the

Aquatic Ecosystem at Anna’s Place By Frank Pablo, Life Enrichment Coordinator

An upgrade to the salt water tank has taken place here at Anna‘s Place. We have added new

salt water critters as well as live coral which illuminate beautiful green polyps when undis-

turbed.

The sea anemone now has a humble home and a safe place for the clown fish to dwell. The

clown fish skim their bodies on the sea anemone like they are getting a quick tickle from an

old friend.

We have a variety of crustaceans: a flame cleaner shrimp and its side kick cousin called a

banded coral shrimp. They both mischievously hide underneath the rocks along with a handful

of mini hermit crabs that climb amongst the vast big rocks.

Let‘s also give it up to the algae eaters or the sea snails that are slowly combing the tank. If

you look closely you can see the white tube worms disguised as chandeliers dangling on the

bottom of the rocks. But don‘t let them fool you: they are still worms even with their unique

look. Oh, and don‘t forget the different sea sponges and sea grapes providing a quick meal

for the diverse community.

Anna‘s Place salt water tank is fascinating and entertaining for the many residents, family and

friends who visit. Who knew the underwater world could be so spellbinding?

Jim and Pat Kuenzi: A Ministry of

Listening and Encouraging Others By Ruben Wilson, Resident

James Berton Kuenzi was born in Silverton, Ore., December 2, 1934, to Theodore

William and Gracia Graynell (Rundel) Kuenzi. A sister, Joyce, completed the family.

Jim attended Middle Grove Elementary and Parrish Junior High schools, and gradu-

ated from Silverton High School. He attended Willamette University after three

years in the Army.

He was sent to Ordinance School in Aberdeen, Md., for basic training. He was then

assigned to Hanford, Wash., where he worked on the radar protecting the Hanford Atomic plant. In Janu-

ary 1954, he was given orders to serve in Korea with various responsibilities. In October 1955, Jim was

brought back to the States where he finished his enlistment at Camp Irwin located on southern California‘s

Mojave Desert. He left the Army as a corporal. Jim had a desire to work in the outdoors as an engineer.

However in 1960, he realized his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis might limit his mobility, so he pursued a

career in accounting. They lived in the Silverton, Salem and Keizer communities south of Portland. He

worked for Salem Sand and Gravel, The Oregon Nut Exchange and State of Oregon.

Patricia Ann Mowery was born on April 26, 1938, in Portland, Ore., to Layton and Blaine Mowery. She had a

brother, Gene. She attended Abernathy and Llewellyn Elementary schools, Cleveland High School and Port-

land State College. Pat‘s ambitions included becoming a school teacher, which she did, teaching classes

from kindergarten through the secondary levels during her career in education.

Pat‘s cousin was married to Jim Kuenzi‘s cousin. Jim was serving in the military at the time of his cousin‘s

wedding, so Pat had never met him. One Saturday afternoon, Pat was invited to go with her cousin to visit

Jim‘s mom, Gracia, who was highly admired by all of her family. Both Pat and Jim were suspicious that their

families were ―setting them up.‖ However, the meeting went well and they followed up with dates the next

few weekends. Soon they were engaged to be married.

Jim and Pat were married at Moreland Presbyterian Church on December 19, 1959, in Portland. It was the

day after Pat completed her college finals and the Saturday before Christmas. Jim and Pat feel the Lord has

Aging Successfully: Learning About Our Brains By Penny Holcomb, Community Relations Director

“Our BRAINS are alive . . . with the sound of MUSIC.” For years music therapy experts, caregiving profession-

als and family members have intuitively understood the power of music to elevate our moods. Now brain

scientists are catching up and confirming that music has the power to heal our brains. This is what 83

Hearthstone residents, family members and friends learned when they attended Roger Anunsen‘s April 15th

seminar at Hearthstone.

A pioneer in the national creative aging movement, Roger Anunsen

designs and presents innovative educational programs that explore the

science of brain health and how to use that science to benefit our

brains. By promoting behavioral approaches to brain health, Roger

incorporates the creative use of food, music, plants, sports, humor, and

the visual arts in ways that literally wake up our brains.

We encourage you to bring your family and friends to experience Rog-

er Anunsen‘s third ―Healthy Brain‖ lecture at Hearthstone – this one

honoring mothers. As always, participants‘ brains will be stimulated by

learning something new and by sampling some ―brain-healthy‖ treats.

For more information about the May 13 seminar, please contact Com-

munity Relations Director Penny Holcomb at 503-521-3006 or

[email protected].

given them a ministry of comfort and blessing to others. They spent

45 years at Salem Alliance Church before moving to Hearthstone at

Murrayhill.

Pat has assumed the position of being historian for her extended

family. She has created photo albums and grandmother books for

all of her grandchildren. Although MS has limited Jim‘s physical ac-

tivities, he enjoys reading, working on computers, and family gath-

erings and games.

Their older daughter, Kristin Gard, is an event planner for Ministers Fellowship International in Portland.

She and her husband, Rick, are the parents of three sons: Josh who is married to Xiomara and the father of

Jesse and Naomi; Nick and his wife Chauncey; and Nathan who is a Marine. Daughter Kathi Schaedler is a

human resources manager for Acumentra Health in Portland. She is married to Karl and is the mother of

Katie and Miles. Karl‘s children are Roland, Gunnar and Anika.

Daughter Kristin had heard positive things about Hearthstone from a financial advisor who had clients in

several retirement communities. As soon as they toured Hearthstone at Murrayhill, Jim was ready to get on

the waiting list. They were impressed with the facilities and with the friendly, welcoming spirit of the staff

they met.

Dumb and Dumber #2 By Barbara Gerson, Resident

Barbara, Barbara Who?

Recently, I went to the Providence on Scholls office

to have blood drawn. I signed my name on their list

and sat down to wait. After a short amount of time,

a woman came out. ―Barbara?‖ she asked hesitantly.

―Yes,‖ I said as I stood to follow her. ―Right this way,

Barbara,‖ she said. I followed along.

―Sit right here, Barbara,‖ she said. ―Barbara, I need

to enter your data in the computer.‖

―Of course,‖ I replied.

―Barbara,‖ she asked, ―what is your last name?‖ I

stated my last name and then spelled it. ―And your

first name?‖ I started to laugh. She didn‘t seem to

understand why.

Don’t Call Me, We’ll Call You

A friend of mine had recently been widowed and

was grieving deeply but still saw the humor in this

and told me the story.

Shortly after her husband died a telemarketer

called her home. The caller asked, ―May I speak to

Robert Morton?‖

―I‘m sorry,‖ she said, ―but he is deceased.‖ ―Oh,‖

said the marketer, ―I‘ll call back later.‖
