It is my considerable pleasure to welcome you to the United States Virgin Islands.

The residents of our Islands take genuine pride in the beauty of our land and sea and

in the diversity of our people. We thank you for choosing to visit the Virgin Islands.

I hope that you will return again and again, thereby getting to know each of our

    unique and wonder-filled islands.

The American flag flies over four main islands, each different in special ways, all

sharing a common destiny. On the "big island" of St. Croix we invite you to discover

our historic towns, estates and heritage trails. St. Thomas has made its name known

around the world as a trading and shopping port for centuries. St. John and Water Island each retain much of the calm

and quiet of by-gone times. And everywhere, white sands, blue skies and turquoise seas invite you to swim, sail, dive, fish

... and relax. I urge you to try our rums, visit our restaurants, dance to our music and meet our people.

Please enjoy our island home and our hospitality. Welcome!

Welcome to the United States Virgin Islands! St. Croix, St. John and

St. Thomas are each distinguished by unique and appealing personalities.

I invite you to discover the distinct and varied offerings of each of our islands.

Home to superb dining, an exciting nightlife and duty-free shopping,

St. Thomas is the most cosmopolitan of our three islands. Our capital,

Charlotte Amalie, is the most visited port in the Caribbean and boasts one

of the most magnificent harbors in the world. Whether soaking up the sun on

one of St. Thomas many beautiful beaches, shopping along the downtown

waterfront, or visiting island attractions, you will find plenty to fill your days

    and nights on the island.

If it is unspoiled beaches and a tranquil atmosphere you are seeking, then look no further than St. John. Enjoy

snorkeling in the crystal blue water, or just relax on one of the world-renowned pristine beaches. Two-thirds

of the island is a National Park, established in the 1950s with land donated by American financier Laurance

Rockefeller. Hike the trails or camp out under the stars in St. Johns lush, untainted environment.

Take some time to visit St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where you can experience a mix of

rich heritage and culture with exciting land and sea activities. Pastel buildings, historic fortresses and majestic

churches can be seen in the charming towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted, while offshore some of the best

scuba diving sites in the world await your exploration.

While each of the islands has its own personality, their proximity makes island hopping quick and easy.

Whatever way you choose to spend your vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, it is sure to be memorable.

    Enjoy your stay!

    Sincerely,

    Beverly Nicholson-Doty

Federal and state partners of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security hope that you have enjoyed your stay in the Virgin Islands. As you leave, keep in mind the following advice to help make your trip through the airport as efficient and comfortable as possible:

ARRIVE ON TIME. Remember to leave adequate time to check baggage and move through security. Security measures in the Virgin Islands are unique. All passengers and crew trav-eling from the U.S. Virgin Islands to the continental United States and Puerto Rico must be cleared by officers of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to determine admissi-bility to the United States. Each individual must complete the CBP Declaration Form 6059B. Check with airlines for recom-mended arrival time.

PACK SMART. Pack an organized carry-on bag using layers a layer of clothes, then electronics, more clothes, and then any heavier items. Innocent items can actually appear to be potential threats in an X-ray image, simply by the way they are packed.

PAY ATTENTION TO 3-1-1 RULE. Liquids, gels, and aero-sols are permitted in 3- ounce containers, placed in a 1-quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag, one bag per traveler. If you can pour it, pump it, squeeze it, spread it, smear it, spray it, or spill it, its subject to these limits. Tamarind and cherry stews are considered liquids and gels. Breast milk and medically neces-sary liquids like baby formula and insulin are permitted, but must be declared to a security officer at the checkpoint before they go through the x-ray machine.

DRESS THE PART. Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) have to resolve any anomaly detected at the checkpoint. TSA strongly recommends removing ALL items from pockets, as well as certain accessories, including wallet, belt, bulky jewelry, money, keys, and cell phone. Place those items into your carry-on bags. Also please remove shoes before entering the screening technology and put them directly on the belt. Removing all of these items will reduce the chance of needing additional screening.

HAVE THE FOLLOWING READY. Passengers should be prepared to present their own boarding pass and a valid federal or state issued government ID, such as a valid drivers license or passport with your name as it appears on your boarding pass. You will have to show these items twice. Once to CBP and the second time to TSA security personnel.

RISK BASED SECURITY. Passengers 12 and younger can now leave their shoes on during security screening. Passengers 75 and older will undergo similar modified screen-

ing procedures to those 12 and under and will be able to leave on their shoes and a light jacket or outer wear when passing through security. Travelers and families of passengers with disabilities or medical conditions may call the TSA Cares helpline toll free at 855-787-2227, 72 hours prior to traveling with any questions about screening policies, procedures and what to expect at the security checkpoint.

FOR CHECKED BAGS. Lock your suitcase with a TSA-approved lock and be sure not to pack any hazardous materi-als. Liquids and gels greater than 3 ounces - such as duty free purchases (including alcohol, perfume and lotion) - purchased before entering the checkpoint, should be placed in checked baggage.

FISH AND WILDLIFE. In order to keep our islands beauti-ful, we must protect our natural resources. The VI code pro-hibits the taking, catching, possessing, transporting or export-ing of indigenous species. The prohibition also includes the removal of coral, sea shells, sand, and other native species, flora and fauna. Commercially caught legal size conch and whelk are the only shells that can be removed from the ter-ritory. Some of the items may also be considered prohibited based on TSA security protocol.

Federal and state partners of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security remind travelers to be vigilant by report-ing suspicious activity to local law enforcement. If you see something, say something. The traveling public plays an important role in security.

BANKS. The following banks operate in the US Virgin Islands:

TAXATION. There is no sales tax in the Virgin Islands. Residents pay income tax to the USVI government. There are no state income taxes.

MAIL. The US Virgin Islands are a territory of the United States and therefore use the same postal system and US mail rates. You can mail an unlimited amount of locally purchased gifts back to the states but liquor and tobacco are excluded. These will not count in your total USVI Duty-Free allowance.

DRESS. We are more than just a beach destination and bath-ing suits worn elsewhere, especially in the downtown areas, tends to offend the local residents. So, please, wear proper attire (no bare midriffs or chests) in town and public areas away from the beach.

PHONES. The Virgin Island area code is 340. There are Innovative public phones throughout the commercial areas. You can make calls just as you would in the United States using credit cards or by calling collect. There is an AT&T Calling Center located in Havensight, across from the cruise ship dock on route 30.

CELLPHONES. Your cell phone may work here as well. AT&T, Sprint and Innovative Wireless all have local service and will allow you to make calls based on your rate plan. Roaming may or may not incur additional charges. Check with your provider for specific rates and coverage.

MEDICAL. For 24 hour medical care call Red Hook Family Practice at 775-2303 (St. Thomas office) or 776-6789 (St. John office) or call Doctors on Duty 776-7966. St. Thomas Hospital phone number is 776-8311.

ISLAND CREATURES. The mongoose take care of our snakes, the scorpions sting but arent poisonous. If you are prone to allergies you may have similar reactions to various insect bites and stings.

Visitors should exercise the same safety precautions used when traveling anywhere else in the world. Lock your hotel door or car when you exit. Dont answer the door in a hotel without verifying whom it is. Place all valuables in the hotels safe deposit box. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly after dark, and stay in well-lighted areas.

The U.S Territories (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the British Virgin Is-lands (to the north and east) are among the most beautiful geographical areas in the world, blessed with powdery beach-es and sun drenched weather. The islands lie in the path of soft trade-winds blowing direct from Portugal. Which perhaps accounts for the fact that Santa Cruz was among the first islands to be sighted by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage west-ward. He then sailed northeast, pass-ing St Thomas, St John and Tortola and called them collectively Las Virgenes.

After his visit, the islands went back to sleep for more than a hundred and fifty years. They woke to find the flag of Den-mark planted on St. Thomas, the French Tricolor on St. Croix and the Union Jack flapping over Tortola (where it still flies). The Arawak Indian population had dis-appeared. Denmark later claimed St. John, bought St. Croix and built the Danish West Indies into thriving sugar cane and trading islands. Slaves were imported early to work the growing number of sugar plantations. The islands were also used as a base for re-shipment of slaves to other areas.

After the Danish abolished slavery in 1848, planters began to abandon their estates and the population and econo-my dwindled. Threatened by German expansion dur-ing World War I, the U.S. bought the Danish West Indies (now the American Virgin Islands) on March 31, 1917. Even then the islands were expensive real es-tate almost $300 an acre. In 1927, residents were granted U.S. citizenship. Until 1931, the islands were administered by the U.S. Navy. Then they were placed under the Depart-ment of the Interior with a Governor appointed by the President. A locally elected legislature (15 members from all three islands) has operated since 1852 but it wasnt until 1970 that is-landers could vote for their own Gov-ernor, and in 1972 a delegate to the U.S Congress. Though U.S. citizens, Virgin Island residents have no vote in national elections. Nor does the Virgin Islands' representative in Washington have a vote on the floor of the house.

1Their slogan Get up close and personal couldnt be more appropriate. See tons of ma-rine life without ever getting wet. Learn about the beauty and magic of Caribbean marine life in a stunning setting. View life on a coral reef from their unique underwater observa-tory. Visit the shark pool where you can pet a shark or hand feed a stingray. Visit with the Lorikeets which will flock to your arm when offered a cup of nectar. And if you dont mind getting wet bring your bathing suit so you can swim with the sea lions or try a Sea Trek Hel-met Dive. When you are ready to relax, have lunch at one of the restaurants and shop for a special souvenir at one of the unique gift shops.

2This Ultimate Caribbean experience begins with a wild ride in the Pinzgauer, a six wheel drive Swiss military transport, to the top of St. Peter Mountain and ends with the world famous Yo-Yo zip. See the incredible island views from eight aerial platforms, fly high on six exhilarating ziplines and maneuver two breathtaking skywalks as your professionally trained guides lead you through the experi-ence of a lifetime. Tree Limin Extreme is the only way to fly on the island. www.ziplinestthomas.com

3Explore Americas Paradise with kayak, hike & snorkel multi-eco adventures in three unique locations. Watch for wildlife while paddling through St. Thomas Mangrove lagoon, enjoy a hermit crab race, a rare geologic blow hole and snokel in a shal-low coral-fringed mangrove nursery. Caneel Bays tour offers you the best that St. John

has to offer with three fun activities: paddle in turquoise waters, hike tropical trails and snorkel over coral reefs with turtles, all in one afternoon! History buffs will enjoy exploring above and below the water at Hassel Island boasting centuries old Forts and ruins in the middle of Charlotte Amalies harbor.

4If youre visiting for a few days be sure to leave yourself at least a half day for relax-ing and sunbathing on Magens Bay Beach. Noted as one of the worlds most beautiful beaches by both Cond Nast and National Geographic it is a must see. Lots of things to do besides swimming and sunbathing like hiking the nature trail, kayaking, paddle boat and sailboat rentals. A nice bar and restaurant with a shop for chair rentals, suntan lotion, bathing suits and much more.

5Some of the fun things to do on surrounding islands include the Dolphin Discovery which takes place on the British Virgin Island of Tortola, just a ferry ride away. Reservations should be made in advance and tell them you are coming from St. Thomas. Your ferry ride will be included in the price. A passport is required for this trip. You will swim with the dolphins in protected, shallow waters. Other activities are: playing golf at the fa-mous Carambola Golf course on St Croix (take the Seaplane over); Visiting the unusu-al rock formations called The Baths in Virgin Gorda; snorkeling or diving the Wreck of the Rhone in the British Virgin Islands.

6St. Thomas is widely known as the best shopping spot in the Caribbean and one of the ten top shopping areas in the world! Many duty-free bargains can be found at prices that are below stateside with no sales tax making it worth your while to spend one of your vacation days perusing the shops in downtown Charlotte Amalie, Havensight Mall, Red Hook, Crown Bay Center or Yacht Haven Grande. The duty-free allowance is $1,600 per person including children. So a family of four can take back $6,400 worth of duty-free purchases.

7Trunk Bay is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and as such is one of the most popular beaches on St. John. It features a 225-yard long underwater snorkeling trail. Underwater plaques along the trail describe the various species of cor-al. There is a bathhouse, snack bar, souvenir shop and snorkel gear rentals are available. Lifeguards are on duty daily. There is a small entry fee. Kids 16 and under are free. Take the ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay and then a taxi or the bus to Trunk Bay.

8Magic Ice, is now St. Thomas Hottest Place to Cool Down. This Caribbean-themed, Scandinavian-inspired gallery crafted entirely of ice, is ranked #1 attrac-tion in Charlotte Amalie on Trip Advisor. The dramatically-lit sculptures feature life-size figures, sea creatures, furniture you can sit on, a frozen slide and a bar that looks like a shipwreck. All made from ice and ac-companied by sound, music and images. Visitors are provided with warm gear to withstand the Arctic chill and at the end of the tour theres a complimentary drink at the ice bar.

9 They say the best way to explore a new place is through running. Find out why with a guided running or power-walking tour through the most scenic & historic areas of St. Thomas. Soak in rich history & stunning views of Charlotte Amalie harbor on the His-toric Waterfront 5K tour, or savor views of St. John & nearby islands on the all-terrain East End-eavor 5K. Each social tour comes with a moisture-wicking shirt, bottled water, photos, and concludes with a Cruzan rum cocktail -- a salty workout deserves a sweet reward! activeislandvi.com

10SNORKEL / SCUBABeing on the water enjoying the sun, sea and sand is one of the major reasons to visit the VI. There are many ways to enjoy the water. If you are a certified diver...or not...there are dive shops which will take you to beautiful underwater dive sites including including historical shipwrecks. There are resort certification programs which will get you diving right away. Or you can rent an underwater submersible Scooter which requires no diving experience at all. DAYSAILSEscape to another world with wind in your sails and adventure in your dreams! De-ciding whether to go to St. John or to the British Virgin Islands on a day sail will take some consideration. Neither of those choices will disappoint you. The waters of the Virgin Islands are known as some of the best sailing waters in the world. And no matter where you end up, you will totally enjoy your day. Of course stay-ing within the boundaries of the United States Virgin Islands will not require you

to pass through any customs areas where a passport may be required. And there is plenty to see and enjoy without leaving this area. Most sailing yachts leave from St. Thomas East End/Red Hook area. Most boats offer drinks, lunch, water toys, snorkel gear and instruction along with a shady area on the boat to take a breezy afternoon snooze.

Some St. John companies will come to St. Thomas and pick you up. For informa-tion on companies offering the above, along with phone numbers, see the ac-tivities and watersports pages.

All beaches in the Virgin Islands are open to the public. A few have dressing facilities and showers Coki (at

Coral World) and Magens Bay on St. Thomas; Cinnamon and Trunk Bay on St. John. Some hotel beaches

have beach chair/umbrella rentals and restaurant/bars nearby, such as Frenchmans Reef Morningstar Beach

and Sapphire Beach. It is advisable to leave valuables at your hotel unless you have a plastic container to take

them along on your swim or snorkeling while at the beach. Avoid the mid-day sun. Start out with a 20 minute

exposure with suntan lotion on your rst few days. Even sitting in the shade can result in sunburn.

    1. COKI BEACHNoted for its tranquil turquoise waters, Coki Beach has great snorkeling and scuba diving right off the beach. Take your rst scuba lesson from one of the dive shops on the beach. You will nd hair braiders, chair rentals, beach waiters serving drinks and vendors selling t-shirts, sunblock, art work, bags, wrap skirts, towels and more! If you want to see the marine life without getting wet, visit Coral World right next door.

    2. MAGENS BAY BEACHNamed one of the worlds most beautiful beaches, Magens Bay, the largest beach on St. Thomas, of-fers changing rooms, bathrooms and showers. The mile long beach is very calm with no waves, unless posted that there is surf present. A water sports operation rents paddle boats, kayaks and sunsh. There is a $5 per person entrance fee to this public beach. This beach can be very crowded on heavy cruise ship days.

    3. MORNINGSTAR BEACHThis is the main beach for the Mariotts Frenchmans Reef and Morningstar Resorts so you will nd lots

    Beachesst. thomas

of hotel guests there and lots of things to support guest lounging and comfort. The watersports operation offers paddleboats, kayaks, sailboats, jet skis and more. Chairs, umbrellas, snorkel gear and oats are available to rent from the hotel. A beachside restaurant and bar lies conveniently at waters edge.

    4. SAPPHIRE BEACHWindsurng lessons, snorkeling, beach chairs and umbrella rentals are just some of the available amenities. Water is for the most part calm and the snorkeling is quite good to either side of the beach. A great beach for learning windsurng as most the wind blows in towards the beach making the return sail a breeze!

    5. LINDQUIST BEACHLocated on the East End of St Thomas charges an entrance fee ($3). It is a very natural beach lined along the shore with indigenous plants and trees with no development within sight. Very popular with the locals. Long, ne, white, sand beach with calm, pristine, crystal blue water. A beautiful Carib-bean beach!

Pam Heath spent 10 years in Cali-fornia working for a bank until she re-ceived a call from her father in 1983 asking her to sail his boat to the Virgin Islands. She never looked back!

She crewed and captained various day charters until she bought her yacht Fantasy in 1994. The rest is history!

Fantasy is a Pearson 36 that really loves to sail. She was originally built for offshore sailing and has been beauti-fully and meticulously maintained mak-ing her safe, stable and comfortable in our calm Caribbean waters. There is a full bimini shade cover over the entire cockpit protecting passengers from the tropical sun during their charter, and lots of cushions for lounging top-side or in the cockpit.

She specializes in teaching non-swimmers and the timid how to snorkel using her super-duper float which al-lows them to view the tropical reef fish and turtles in total safety. There is also a fishing pole for trolling while under sailyou might even be able to catch your lunch!

There is a full head (bathroom) on board, galley, forward cabin and changing area and she has an iPod with lots of Jimmy Buffett or bring your own and plug in! She offers Snorkel gear, open bar and hot lunch for one low all-inclusive price. We encourage you to join her for one of the best days of your vacation!

he Virgin Islands hosts some of the fin-est marine life in the Caribbean. Acres of coral reefs make up an ecosystem that supports a large variety of sea creatures and under water plants. Snorkelers can enjoy a leisurely swim in the crystal clear waters, diving through fantastic reefs to witness tropical marine life. St. Thomas

and St John host a variety of snorkeling locations and famous underwater trails. Both novice and expert snorkel-ers will enjoy the passages through and over the reefs.

Fins, a Mask and a SnorkelThe big question for many is should I buy or rent snor-

kel gear? If you think that you will be snorkeling every day of your visit then it might make sense to purchase a set from either the local dive shops or K-Mart. If you are only planning to snorkel for one day then just rent. Important when either buy- ing a mask or renting is to make sure that it fits properly. Hold the mask up to your face without using the strap and inhale through your nose until you have created a vacuum. If the mask stays attached to your face and no air leaks out then it is a good fit. Make sure your fins fit comfortably. They dont need to be super tight but should fit snugly.

Snorkels are one-size-fits-all. You can rent snorkel gear at the various snorkel beaches mentioned below. Most day sails and water sport tours operators will supply you with snorkel gear as part of their tour.
