Michael Mayer is on a roll. He directed three Broadway productions in a row that were nominated for best-musical Tony awards. He won a Drama Desk Award for outstanding director of a musical for 2002’s Thoroughly Modern Millie, as well as a Drama Desk Award and a Tony for best direction of a musical for Spring Awakening.

But his most remarkable accomplishment may have been convincing the notoriously rebellious punk-pop trio Green Day to let him adapt its critically acclaimed, multiplatinum 2004 rock opera, American Idiot, for the Broadway stage.

Mayer fell in love with the album when he was directing the 2006 film Flicka. “It was the only CD in my car as I would drive the Pacific

Coast Highway from Hollywood to Malibu and back,” he recalls. “I couldn’t get enough of it. Something tickled in my head and I thought, ‘There is actually a narrative inside this album. What if I staged it?’ And that’s where the idea first came to me.”

That initial spark of inspiration grew into a flame when Mayer did an interview with Variety on the subject of rock ’n’ roll music in theater and said, “I’m sure that someone’s going to be doing American Idiot: The Musical, because it’s ready to go.” Mayer’s Spring Awakening producer, Tom Hulce, called to ask if he’d be interested in pursuing the project.

“I thought it was the most far-fetched thing you can imagine,” Mayer confesses. “Why is this punk band going to be interested in musical theater?”

‘I thought [American Idiot: The Musical] was the most far-fetched thing you can imagine.’

ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 11

Page 12: May 2014: Green Day's American Idiot

A few weeks later, Mayer and Hulce found themselves meeting with Green Day agent Jenna Adler and manager Pat Magnarella. Mayer pitched his concept, which involved taking the album’s main character, the Jesus of Suburbia, and pairing him with two best friends. Instead of one man’s journey, the story would follow three young men trying to figure out who they are, and understand the world they were born into, post-9/11 America.

Not long after that, the agent and the manager took Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong to see Spring Awakening. Says Mayer, Armstrong came away suitably impressed.

“We spent all night talking about what American Idiot might be as a musical,” Mayer says. “He brought it to [Green Day bassist] Mike Dirnt and [drummer] Tré Cool, and they

eventually got in a room with us after we organized a reading of the musical. They heard it, and they were sold from that point on.”

The production premiered at Berkeley Rep in 2009, and transferred to Broadway’s St. James Theatre in March 2010. It opened to mostly positive reviews, including a crucial rave from The New York Times.

It was nominated for several Tonys (including best musical), and ultimately won for best scenic design and best lighting design of a musical. But, if you ask Mayer, the show’s biggest victory was crossing generational lines and bringing a new audience to the theater.

“I’d walk down 44th Street,” he says, “and the line outside the theater looked different from every other line outside every other show. It was cool to see people who had never been to the theater before show up because they were Green Day fans. Likewise, it was amazing to see Broadway audiences discover a kind of sound that they hadn’t heard on a Broadway stage. It was really a meeting of two worlds that came crashing together. It was really cool to see a completely different version of what a Broadway audience could be.”

That “collision between contemporary music and narrative” is the driving force behind much of the work Mayer has been doing lately. He clearly believes that fusing the traditional theater audience with a younger, more contemporary crowd is the key to Broadway’s future and vitality.

“The older audiences get older and die,” he laments, “and what can you do? The audience that’s always been there for South Pacific just isn’t going to exist anymore. Unless we continue to make theater that’s resonant for — and speaks to — a younger audience, I don’t see how theater will continue to be the vital art form I believe it is.”

‘It was amazing to see Broadway audiences discover a kind of sound that they hadn’t heard on a Broadway stage.’

GREEN DAY (Music & Lyrics) – vocalist/guitarist BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG (Book & Lyrics), bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool – were kids from working-class backgrounds who came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. Even though they had released two records prior (1039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk), they announced their arrival with 1994’s Dookie, a dynamic blast of exuberant punk-pop that sold 15 million copies and earned the band its first Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with subsequent studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning, while entertaining millions of fans with their frenetic live shows. But it was their landmark 2004 album, American Idiot, that launched Green Day into the stratosphere. American Idiot debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, earned seven Grammy nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album), and raised the bar for modern rock and roll. In 2009, Green Day released 21st Century Breakdown, which won a 2010 Grammy for Best Rock Album. It spawned two hit singles: the gold “Know Your Enemy,” which was the first song ever to top Billboard’s Rock, Alternative and Mainstream Rock charts simultaneously, and the double-platinum “21 Guns,” which earned them three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards including Best Rock Video. Green Day also took home an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Rock Music Artist. Later that year, Green Day collaborated with the Tony Award-winning director of Spring Awakening, Michael

perfectly captures the excitement and surprise you might feel when discovering that the foothills of Blue Ridge are home to more than 15 wineries. That’s right. You can enjoy a weekend in wine country just 90 minutes north of Atlanta.

Frogtown Cellars and Wolf Mountain are two of the

better-known wineries in the region. Frogtown, on 57 acres in Dahlonega, is Georgia’s most-awarded winery in national competitions. If you’ve sampled a bottle labeled “Frogtown” or “Thirteenth Colony,” you’ve tast-ed the fruits of its labors.

Wolf Mountain, also in Dahlonega, offers views of the southern Appalachians and a Sunday brunch of some renown every March-December. The

Whatever your vintage, you can enjoy a weekend in wine country just 90 minutes north of Atlanta.

spring-summer lineup: A white wine, sparkling wine & seafood festival this month; in June, a tribute to Tuscany; in July, a tribute to the barbecue of the South with live blues music; and in August, artisan cheese and Southern regional cuisine.

With so much to see and do, I spent two days on the winding backroads of North Georgia in search of good wine and good stories. You might want to start your own wine country tour with these stops.

THREE SISTERS VINE-YARDS | Noted as “Dahlonega’s first family-farm winery,” this was Lumpkin County’s first since Pro-hibition. Nearly 20 years after the first vines were planted, the 184-acre farm now features 11 grape va-rieties. Owners Doug and Sharon Paul remain committed to their “vine-to-wine” approach, meaning every drop is grown, fermented and bottled on the property.

The bright, laid-back tasting room and beautiful views make this an excellent stop for long-time wine lovers and beginners alike. Says Doug, “This ain’t France, this ain’t Italy — it’s Georgia. We’re trying to bring [wine] down to earth and demy-stify the experience.” The happy staffers are both knowledgeable and passionate about their wines and the area’s history.

Though craftsmanship is evident in every glass, my favorite pour was the Cynthiana. Made from the Native American varietal Cynthiana-Norton, not found west of the Mississippi River, its butterscotch notes pair decadently with dark chocolate. An absolute must if you’re looking for a true taste of Georgia.

493 Vineyard Way. Dahlone-ga. Tasting flights $10; fam-ily- and pet-friendly; tasting

room hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 1-5 p.m. Sundays. Details: [email protected] or 706.865.9463.

YONAH MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS | The drive here is breathtaking. As the sun sets, it washes the mountain miles with an amber haze. Owners Bob and Jane Miller have neatly integrated the area’s rustic elegance with a skylight and Brazilian marble bar to create a stunning tasting room. The new space, which opened in March, is on a 197-acre estate alongside 20 acres of vines; each vineyard is named for a daughter or granddaughter.

The tasting list this day fea-tures seven wines. My favorite: the Kistler-inspired 2012 chardonnay. This bottle packed a dry, tangy flavor that finished with tastes of tangerine and Georgia peach. Barreled in French oak, this white is complex but balanced, and favored by Jane. I was also lucky enough to taste the 2010 Totem — Bob’s favored reserve cabernet

SMALL TALKBefore Prohibition, Georgia was the fifth-largest wine producer in the nation. Today, California is first. Georgia is no longer considered a large-scale contender.

The Cynthiana-Norton grape was cultivated by both the Cherokees and Thomas Jefferson.

The Georgia Wine Highway winds through Rabun, White and Lumpkin counties, with signage recommending stops along the way.

The soil, mineral content and weather patterns of North Georgia closely mimic those of Napa Valley, Calif., resulting in comparable wines.

Though counts vary, there are more than 25 small-farm wineries throughout the North Georgia mountain region.

sauvignon that’s as velvety in taste as its black-purple hue. Scents of cocoa leap from the glass, while each sip spotlights first blackberry jam then sweet toasted oak. Argu-ably the best of the best.

Yonah has live music every Saturday and walking trails (mapped by early summer) to let guests explore the wooded grounds.

Stop by on a Saturday for the Tour de la Cave & Barrel Sam-pling. For $25 per person, you get an overview of the winemaking process, a trip underground to Georgia’s first functional wine caves and the chance to taste three unreleased wines.

1717 Ga. 255, Cleveland. Tast-ing flights are $11 for seven pours or $6 for four. Hours vary. Details at 706.878.5522.

MONTALUCE WINERY & ESTATES | From the covered patio of Le Vigne — the farm-to-table restaurant on-site — you’ll see 15 picturesque acres of vines running along dirt paths and the dock of a glinting lake.

Of the 10 wines on the list during my visit, my favorite was

the La Stella, the menu’s boldest red and a blend of Georgia-grown merlot with French-grown Petit Verdot and cabernet sauvignon.

Full of flavor and aroma, it’s balanced and earthy with a nose of old leather and plump cherries. My choice white: the 2011 Pri-maluce. Dry and medium-bodied, this pinot gris-chardonnay blend smells like freshly baked bread and bursts with citrus and melon flavors.

Be sure to stay for lunch. Ex-ecutive chef Austin Rocconi fea-tures a sumptuous menu of “fresh, whole, modern” dishes. Many are enhanced with an umami flavor (our sixth, savory sense) that pairs deliciously with the earthiness of the wines. Curious? Try the arugula and mushroom agnolotti soup, complete with a quail egg poached tableside in mushroom broth.

946 Via Montaluce, Dahlone-ga. Tasting flights $16; tours held at 2 p.m.Tuesdays-Sundays. Open for brunch 11 a.m-3 p.m. Sundays. Details [email protected] or at 706.867.4060.

Just a few miles east of downtown Atlanta, the city square of Decatur is packed with food, festivals and fun. This vivid neigh-borhood boasts unique restaurants, history

and art, and a festival for everything — all within walking distance. This spot is best expe-rienced on foot, so grab your flats and make a day of it. A quick MARTA ride will drop you off in the middle of it all, but parking can quickly be found as well.

Here are a few highlights on or just off the main drag, East Ponce de Leon Avenue.

EATS AND TREATS | If you can’t find something delicious in Decatur, well, friend, you ain’t hungry. For Southern decadence, try the steakhouse Parker’s On Ponce. To please a global palate, visit Chai Pani — a quirky

Indian street-food joint that offers feel-good, flavorful dishes (pair the chickpea-battered fried kale with a Thums Up cola). Colbeh Persian Kitchen & Bar offers big bites of suc-culent, savory meats and addictive rice dishes. For quick and casual, try Calle Latina for authentic Latin lunch dishes including crab empanadas and veggie arepas.

If you need a little pick-me-up, there’s cof-fee, tea and sweets all along the way. Dancing Goats Coffee Bar, a storefront for renowned, eco-conscious coffee roasters Batdorf & Bron-son, offers eye-brightening espresso beverages, locally made doughnuts, and a showcase of single-origin coffees. Java Monkey is the place for a sip and a story. The comfy organic coffee shop/wine bar exhibits local artwork, plus a rolling list of live music and poetry

readings. Greene’s Fine Foods has “all your pecan gift-giving needs” — rows of candies, chocolates, and bags of salty or sweet, spiced or spiked nuts. For fro-yo fans, The Yogurt Tap is a must. The creamy, yummy flavors change frequently, and all are made without artificial sweeteners or dyes. It offers dairy-free and no-added sugar options, too.

LOCAL LIBATIONS | A bona-fide speak-easy, Paper Plane, is tucked down a side alley, shaded by overhanging trees. Sit at the bar. Watch these cocktail craftspeople artful-ly pour drinks inspired by vintage flavors and spirits. For artisan cocktails (and an adventurous raw bar) go to Kimball House. Made with seasonal, local ingredients, the drinks are guaranteed conversation-makers. If you dare, go off menu and try a Gin-Gin Mule — forget muddling, these herbs are blasted with liquid nitrogen then smashed, causing the drink to burst with the freshness of a spring morning. Twain’s Billiards and Tap, Decatur’s own award-winning brewery, features up to eight in-house beers. All-day Wednesdays and on Sunday evenings, you can get a burger, beer and side for just $10, one of the best burger deals in town.

CONCERTS ON THE SQUARE | On Satur-day nights in May, enjoy family-friendly tunes at sunset. Whatever your groove, you’re sure to find a new favorite from such genres as New Orleans funk, retro Top 40, acoustic rock, and even folk -rock performed by Michelle Malone. Shows start at 7 p.m.

DECATUR ARTS FESTIVAL | The 26th annual event, running May 24-25, bursts with artistic expression. Shop for jewelry, pottery, paintings, apparel and accessories from Southern artists. Both days feature music, performance art, dancing and special events for kids and teens. Mark your calendars for the May 1 poster unveiling, where you can grab a print signed by the artist and help ignite a month of fine and funky local art, and the May 23 ArtWalk. The one-night, citywide exhibition features local galleries, retailers and restaurants that display artwork and offer free refreshments.

BEACH PARTY | Grab your flip-flops June 20 and head to the Square, filled with 60 tons of sand. Highlights include a kids’ boardwalk with games, live music, dancing on the plaza, a food court and beverages.

HERE ARE SOME FACTS ABOUT THE EGYPTIAN BALLROOM, THE GRAND SALON AND THE GRAND TERRACE:

★ The discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1922 launched a worldwide fascination with Egyptian décor. That look can be seen in the Moorish details the theater itself and significantly in the Egyptian Ballroom.

★ The Rooftop Terrace, accessible off the Grand Salon, was added in 1999, following a fire that damaged the theater offices that had occupied the space.

★ Illustrations of scarabs, also known as dung beetles, appear throughout the theater and the Egyptian Ballroom balcony. These mythological designs are believed to ward off evil spirits.

★ The chandeliers and a large skylight in the Grand Salon were concealed by drop ceilings installed when the room held Georgia Theater Company’s corporate offices.

FOX FUN FACTSSECRETS BEYOND THE STAGE: PRIVATE EVENT SPACESEach year, the Fox Theatre hosts more than 250 shows and half a million visitors for concerts, musicals and movies. Patrons also can create their own memories with private events in the theater’s Middle Eastern-themed spaces.

The Egyptian Ballroom and the Grand Salon are lavishly decorated with sweeping columns and ornamentation, making them great for weddings and receptions, corporate events and association functions. From business luncheons or dinners for 50 guests, to pre-show cocktail parties or post-show dessert extravagan-zas for 1,100, the Fox can set the stage for elegance and fantasy.
