Helpful hints for stamp collectors

In the February 2014 issue of “American Philatelist” I found an article on removing the adhesive from self-adhesive stamps. The self-adhesive stamp has a pressure-sensitive adhesive that does not require moistening. Supplies: a WD-40 pen, a pair of stamp tongs, a paper towel and some corn starch. The WD-40 pen is nice because you can put the WD-40 right where you want it.

Step 1: Cut the paper around the stamp leaving enough exposed to hold on to the edge of stamp with tongs. Hold your stamp with tongs, with the back of the stamp (blank paper facing you) so you can locate the center of the stamp.

Do this by holding it to a light source so you can see the outline of the stamp, apply WD-40 pen to the center back of the stamp. Within a few seconds the paper will begin to look translucent and your stamp is ready to be removed from the envelope paper. It will peel off very easily with your tweezers (tongs) but use care in doing so. Only the slightest trace of adhesive will be left on the envelope paper. Step 2: Place your stamp face down on a paper towel, caution, it is still very sticky. Take a brush and sprinkle corn starch on the back of the stamp, brush off excess. Let dry, repeat if necessary.

From Harry & Roberta: Sports Medals and Cultural Awards

Our annual “Uffda” awards were held at the Bothell Lodge on March 20. For 2013, we improved greatly. Nineteen members completed the requirements for 121 sports medals. Bothell was a close second with 118. Our output was very significant as we more than doubled the number of sports medals earned over the previous year. Congratulations to all our sports medal participants. Congratulations are also in order to these members who have earned Cultural Skills Awards in 2013. We tied with Bothell lodge at 11 medals total, and get to keep our trophy for another year!
