Holy Spirit Day, which we call Pentecost, is May 19th! We will celebratehere with Holy Eucharist, Holy Baptism, balloons and a Birthday-of-the-Church party. Please join us!

Can you define the Holy Spirit? some have asked me. After referencing

The Holy Spirit in our Catechism on pages 852-3 of our Book of CommonPrayer, trying to not be a smart aleck I ask, Can you define define? Mydictionary says that the word define comes from Latin words that mean to

put a boundary around; to put an end to; to state precise meaning. Since wecannot limit, bound or end God, especially God we know as Holy Spirit, and

because the Bible speaks of God as boundless, unending, unlimited and nothaving precise meaning, No, I cannot define the Holy Spirit. And, weexperience much we cant define. Define time. Define love. Define humanspirit.

The Holy Spirit is God. Christians relate God the Holy Spirit/Sustainer to Godthe Father/Creator and God the Son/Redeemer in the divine Trinity (TrinitySunday is May 26th). When our faith was mentioned for the first time to anAsian man who was curious about Christianity, an old story goes, he said, Ah,

now I see. You are governed by a divine committee. When told that in thestory of Jesus baptism the divine Son heard a voice from heaven and saw theSpirit of God descending like a dove, the same man said, Father I understand;Son I understand; bird I do not understand at all.

Such puzzlement should inform us that we have work to do in approachingthe concept and reality of the Spirit. Despite our best efforts, we finally mustgive up trying to say what the Spirit is and turn to saying what the Spirit does:The Spirit hovers over the waters at creation: Creator Spirit. The Spirit is the

breath of God in the voice of the prophets; God inspires, and speaks to andthrough, the human voice and human writings. The Spirit appears at Jesus

baptism as a sign that, from the first, Jesus participates in the boundless, endlessnature and activity of God.

Jesus claims that the Spirit commissions him. In Johns Gospel Jesus promisesthe Spirit, and after Jesus is bodily removed from the disciples and this world, the Paraclete --usually this Greek word is translated Comforter-- comes(Acts 2:1-21). The Spirit is presented as a divine advocate who takes our side, speaks up for us, makes us strong and makes Christ a living presence. Paulsets a good example by firmly refusing to define the Spirit; but he makes Christcentral to whatever he wants to say about God and closely connects Christwith the Spirit.

    Yours, in Christ -

    Rectors Desk from page 1

Today, the Spirit creates, speaks, anoints, comes, empowers: the lifeless comes alive. The past becomes

present. The long ago is as fresh as the now, and the Spiritmoves us toward tomorrow.

The Spirit --undefined, unending, unlimited-- acts amongand in us. The Spirit, promised by the Father, connectedwith Jesus Christ, comes to us when we cannot naturally

come to him; and there are no limits, no ends to what Godwould work now, through us.

So we do not define. We pray: Come, Holy Spirit!

    WHAT IS PLANNEDGIVING?

This is the first in a series of articles based on informationsupplied by the Episcopal Church Foundation. For moreinformation about establishing a planned gift for the benefitof Saint Michael & All Angels, please contact our rector.--Ed.

Planned giving encompasses a variety of ways that gifts can bemade to the church from accumulated resources. It usuallyinvolves financial or estate planning; however, it is notreserved for the wealthy.

Planned giving is a means by which anyone concerned

with the wise use of his or her personal resources makes aconsidered choice about their ultimate disposition.

In general planned gifts are made through:*A Bequest in a Will* A Life Income Giftsuch as a pooled income fund, acharitable gift annuity, or a charitable remainder trust* Gifts of Special Assets (real estate, closely held stock, life insurance, retirement accounts)Planned giving establishes a way for a donor to provide

for family members while remembering the church as well.It often enables the donor to provide more for his or herheirs and to make a larger gift than thought possible. Itoften reduces taxes as well.

Planned gifts can be designated for an organizations

general funds or its endowment.Planned gifts are either outright gifts (i.e., gifts of

appreciated securities, real property, personal property, etc.)or deferred gifts (i.e. bequests, property, etc.) or deferredgifts (i.e. bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitabletrusts).

A BEQUEST IN A WILLPerhaps the easiest and most common way of making a

planned gift is through your will. Yet over 50% of Americansdo not have one. (continued in the next column)

If you die without a will, the state will divide your assets amongyour spouse and children (regardless of their age); appoint anadministrator that may cost the estate large fees; and appointguardians, who may or may not have been your choice, for yourdependents. The state makes no charitable contributions, and itwill ensure that your estate pays as much tax as possible.

By making a will, you appoint your own administrator; youname the guardian of your dependents; you control applicabletaxes; you can create a famil y or charitable trust; and you can

share your resources with your family, church, or other institutionsas you choose.A bequest in a will can take the form of a set amount of money,

a percentage of an estate, a specific asset, a trust, or the namingof a church-related organization as a contingent beneficiary.

Sample language for including the church in your will mightbe: I give, devise, and bequeath (state amount, asset, or percentageof the estate) to (name and address of your church) to be used(describe use) or as the churchs governing board or vestry deemsappropriate.

The next article in this series will touch on life income gifts, gifts of real estate, appreciated property and tangible propertyand gifts of life insurance and retirement accounts. The aboveand further infomation in this topic is available from the Episcopal

    Church Foundation www.episcopalfoundation.org.

[Episcopal News Service] The Rev. Amy McCreath awoke inWashington, D.C., April 19 to learn that her parish of Church ofthe Good Shepherd in Watertown, Massachusetts, was close tothe epicenter of an unprecedented manhunt for the second oftwo suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing. She also soonlearned that the Episcopal Church sometimes is really just a small

parish.Soon after a call from her bishop, the Rt. Revd M. Thomas

Shaw, SSJE, of the Diocese of Massachusetts, McCreaths

phone kept ringing.Ive heard from quite a few bishops and parishes all over

the country and friends and Ive been just very movedand amazed by the power of social media and theconnectedness we have through the Episcopal Church, shetold Episcopal News Service.

As soon as she learned the news, McCreath said she, oneof the wardens of the parish, and an intern began contacting

parishioners. Before coming to Good Shepherd in 2010, McCreath was

the Episcopal chaplain at Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology. MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, 26, ofSomerville, was killed at about 10:30pm April 18 during whatthe Boston Globe called a chaotic, violent night that precededthe April 19 manhunt.

My heart goes out to the MIT community. Im a huge afan of the MIT police, McCreath said. Theyre top notch.I am grieving with them as they mourn the loss of a finecolleague.

Events began to unfold on the evening of April 18 after theFBI released photos of two then-unidentified men they calledarmed and extremely dangerous. They had asked the

publics help in identifying the men but added a cautionarywarning.

    Journey

    On April 21st, the JOURNEY

    members said their good-

byes, and during the 8 and 10amworship services on April 21, theJOUR NE Y class was de-commissioned.

I remember how many monthsago, in the early season of summer2012, the concept ofJOURNEYcame before the Christian EducationCommittee.

Father Jeff Hulet presented aministry that he and his wife, DJ hadactively participated in at their former

parish in New Jersey. TheJOURNEYministry was comprised of two

elements: Lectio Divina, which is aform of contemplative prayer, and ateaching time of Anglican history.JOUR NE Y was accepted and

embarked in the fall of 2012. OnNovember 19, fifteen parishionersand two clergy gathered to begin theJOURNEYprogram held in theNorth Wing of Saint Michael & AllAngels. Every Monday night theclass started at 7pm and ended at9pm.

Father Hulet began each classsession with a selection of music and

an introduction to the nightsdiscussions. Following theintroduction time, the group

participated in Lectio Divina for onehour.

In Lectio Divina, people sit togetherin small groups and listen to aScripture reading. Time is given toreflect and to contemplate what theHoly Spirit may be saying throughthis reading. Each person present isgiven time to share his or herthoughts. Lectio Divina takes placeduring the first hour of the class.

After a break for refreshments, thesecond hour of JO UR NE Y isdedicated to a time of teaching.Father Jeff led the class through fiveteaching modules over a period ofsix months.

Formation is the catch word andthe name of the curriculum adoptedfor our fifth through eighth graders inSunday School, beginning May 5th in theGreen Room.

Just as we seek to grow in our faith,

our youth look for ways consciouslyor unconsciously to understand thehow, why and why not of the contentsof the Creed we recite each Sunday.

The Formation curriculum meetsthose basic tenets with direct strategiesfor thought, discussion and humour.

Another piece in the Christianeducation program is the ChildrensChoir.

Stephen Black (Director of MusicMinistry) is working to find anagreeable time for that choir to rehearse.

How important is it to have a ChildrensChoir in a Church? Let me count theways:

    1) Young singers can absorbunderstanding of our faith through thewords of hymns and songs;

    2) When children sing and participatein the worship service, the liturgicalexperience is deepened for thecongregation;

    3) When making music together, choirsingers bond and develop a sense ofcommunity with each other, alsoextending their bond to the larger church

community;4) Music itself enriches the life and

soul of the singer.Remember that St. Augustine tells us

    that singing is praying twice.

OurJOURNEYgroup has concludedtheir work underFr. Jeff Hulet, havingmet for the last time on April 15th. AnewJOURNEYgroup begins next Fall.Meanwhile all other Christian Education.

program parts continue: the Mens Groupweekly meetings, Vestry meetings,Sundays at Nine, choir rehearsals, handbell rehearsal yes, all provideChristian Education to souls in growth.

    SANCTUARY REFURBISHING

As presented at our Annual Parish Meeting on Feb. 3, our parish sanctuaryis in need of refurbishing. The goal is to accomplish this during the comingsummer months. The question now becomes how to provide the funds forthese needed items.

As you can see from the breakdown below, the bids come in at $22,849.00If we could get a bit more than that it would cover any extras (in my housethere are always extras). Should those not come up - then we would beable to do a few other things, like remove carpeting in the North Wing andrefinish that floor, etc.

PROPOSED COST FOR SANCTUARY RENOVATION $ 22,849

We are hoping that those who pledged this year would consider adding aone-time gift of $200.00. Please contact either of us with any questionsyou may have with regard to this project

aint Michael & All Angels Churchis privileged to host the vocal

ensemble LYRA from St. Petersburg,Russia in concert on May 18. Here isan excerpt from a review in theWashington Post, written by AndrewMalone and dated August 30, 2004.

LYRA produced a pure a cappellasound that could both fill the intimatespace and drop to an edge-of-your-seat whisper, and the ensemblecoordination remained impeccablethrough even the most complex

po lyphony. The groups clea rharmonies gave a sense of how the

unique flavor of Orthodox musicpersists in both the clean, bright musicof 17th-century Dmitri Bortnianskyand the aching chromatics of turn-of-the-last-century Pavel Tchesnokov.Dobri Khristovs Praise the name ofthe Lord made the greatest impressionof all, though, because it featured a

solo by Vladimir Feliauer, one of thoseforce-of-nature Russian basses, whose tone was rock-solid and velvet-smooth no matter how low he went.

After the sampling of intense, elevatedOrthodox music, the singers post-intermission entrance in traditional dressand singing a jaunty folk tune brought

everything back to earth. The simplermusic offered showcase solos for mostof the singers, and lots of broad acting, like Ekaterina Isatchenkos charminglycoquettish posing in Black-browed,

black-eyed fellow, partially made up forthe lack of texts and translations. Yet itwas the Russian Orthodox music, especially in LYRAs fine performances, that left one wanting more.

Opportunities to hear live performancesof a cappella repertoire from the greatrepertory of Russian sacred and secularvocal music are quite rare. For that reason

alone, this promises to be an extraordinaryevent. Please come to the concert, andinvite your friends! The program is onSaturday evening, May 18, at 7:30 P.M.The concert is free, and there will be areception afterwards.

Feel free to visit the groups websiteat http://www.lyra-online.org

LYRA is a community ofprofessional musicians. Most of ourmembers are students or

postgraduates of Saint-PetersburgConservatoire, working in differentchoirs of Saint-Petersburg. Some of

us are also soloists at musical theatresof our city. Though the members ofour community represent differentmusical professions: choir conductors, opera singers, instrumentalists, musicteachers - we are all united by love forchoir and ensemble singing. The choircommunity LYRA includes about 25

people. However, due to differentdifficulties connected with thearrangement of concerts for such anumerous group, we usually performin small groups of soloists consistingof 5-6 people, trying to keep the

harmony of choir sound. In 2001 we were awarded theMontreux (Switzerland) internationalchoral festival diploma. In 2005 ourgroup was also a winner of ColeraineInternational Choral Festival (NorthernIreland).
