We have a couple new advertisers again this month. Please welcome Billiard Gallery and The Break Room to the pages of the paper. I hope everyone will keep them in mind when it comes to pool supplies and pool on the South East part of Phoenix. Hopefully we don’t have any glaring errors in the paper this month. Especially no ads from last November. Sorry Jimmy. Before we even had a chance to mourn the loss of Marvin Lawson, we lost Guy Martinez last month. Kitty’s had a fundraiser for Guy’s family last month and Q & Brew will also be holding a benefit for Guy’s family on May 5th at 1pm.

Until next time...

- Mike

Arizona Billiard & Dart News May 2013

After her second place finish at the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour’s season opener last month at Bullshooters, Bernie Store did that fin-ish one better with an undefeated run through the field of twenty five players on the bar tables at Stinger’s Sports Bar & Grill on April 20th - 21st.

With the event on bar tables, no points were to be awarded for this event. That meant that the usual influx of out-of-state players was not in attendance for this one, but the field still included such notables as Store, Susan Williams, Sara Miller, Leandrea Gaff, Tracie Hamman, Veronica Poore, Justine Bishop and New Mexico’s Terri Johnson-McCauley; all dangers on the bar box.

Some of the top players would find themselves facing an uphill battle early in this one as Gaff, Bishop and Poore all lost first round matches. Sara Miller would quickly join them in a power packed one loss side after a second round loss to Tracie Hamman.

On the winner’s side, Saturday play left just four players without a loss. Store, Williams, Ham-man and Maria Simonson. Simonson surprised some in attendance with her play on Saturday as she put together a combined score for the day of twelve wins and four losses. By means of comparison, Bernie was the only player to have a better record after day one with her 12-2 record.

On the one loss side, Claudia Morado, Prescott’s Stephanie Sterling, Sara Miller and Leandrea Gaff all kept their tournament hopes alive and would come back to play on Sunday.

Winner’s side matches on Sunday saw two hill-hill matches with Maria sending Tracie Hamman to the one loss side, and Bernie scoring a 4-3 win

over Susan Williams.

Stephanie Sterling ended Claudia Morado’s tourna-ment in 7th place and Sara Miller had it easy as her op-ponent, Leandrea Gaff, could not make it to Sunday play.

Miller would go on to eliminate Tracie Hamman in 5th place 4-0, while Susan Williams ended Sterling’s tournament with a 4-3 win.

The match for the hot-seat could have been missed if you went outside for a long smoke break as Bernie ran over Maria 4-1 in under fifteen minutes - easily the quickest match of the event. By contrast, Susan Wil-liams ground out a 4-2 win over Sara Miller on the one loss side to earn the right to play Maria in the semi-finals.

Maria’s Cinderella run finally came to an end in the semi-finals as she had no answer for Susan’s ball mak-ing and pattern play. Williams calmly ran out from any opportunity she had and took the match 4-0. Still, a great finish and the best finish in Simonson’s AWBT career so far.

The final race to six saw Susan still on fire as she raced out to an early 4-1 lead, but that only seemed to get Bernie’s attention as she quickly regained control of the match and knotted the score at 4-4. Williams would get to the hill at 5-4, but was quickly joined there by Store at 5-5. Bernie had the break in the last rack and would break dry as she had done multiple times in the finals. Williams eyed an open table, but would choose a make-able combination to get her run started. After missing

the combination, Susan could only sit and watch Bernie run the rack for the 6-5 win and first place.

The AWBT Would like to thank Dale Hanson and his staff at Stingers for hosting the event and add-ing $300. Thanks to the friends of the AWBT who added $300 and to Jose Gonzalez of Las Glorias Grille for adding another $100 to the ladies prize fund.

Ed Scott Wins at KnobbysOn Friday April 5, Knobbys held their monthly 9 and under 8 ball tournament. 28 great play-ers showed up to play and to celebrate Sara Sorg’s Birthday.

It was a race to two games on the winners side and a race to 1 on the losers side.

The hot seat match was Joseph Farias vs. Ed Scott. Joseph beat Ed 2-1 putting Ed on the losers side.

On the losers side, Evans Bishop beat Sophia Morquecho, giving her 50.00 for 4th place.

The next match was Ed and Evans. It was a back and forth battle but in the end, Ed won. Evans made 110.00 for 3rd place and 2nd place side pot.

Ed was shooting lights out as he came to play his rematch against Joseph in the finals. Ed won the 1st set 2-0. With only one more game to play in the 2nd set, he finished it off with a great run out. Joseph got 140.00 for 2nd place and Ed Took home 300.00 for his 1st place finish.

Thank you everyone who came out and we look forward to seeing you Friday May 3rd. Knobby’s always has their tournament the 1st Friday of every month. 1st place Ed Scott $300.002nd place Joseph Farias $140.003rd place Evans Bishop $110.004th place Sophia Morquecho $50.00

Tucson’s Mike Hamman made an undefeated run through a power packed field of 29 players at Stinger’s 8’s & Under 10-Ball event on April 27th.

As is usually the case, picking a favorite in this one was tough with notable monster players in-cluding Hamman, Steve Stowers, Burt Balancad, Carl Stewart, Ed Scott, Ben Sutherland, Steve Stowers, Ken Gouso, Susan Williams and Bernie Store.

The final four on the winners side were Ham-man, Nick Cipiti, Sutherland and Stewart. That number would be cut in half when Hamman defeated Cipiti 8-4 and Sutherland beat Stewart 8-5.

In the match for the hot-seat, Sutherland would only manage one game before Hamman took the hot-seat and got comfortable waiting for an op-ponent in the finals.

On the one loss side, Tenadore Lee was laying waste to the brackets. After a first round loss to Joey Pegnam, Ten had won six straight matches that included notable wins over Bernie Store, Burt Balancad, Carl Stewart and Nick Cipiti. Ten wasn’t satisfied with just third place and he sent Sutherland to the seats with a 6-1 scoreline and set his sites on Hamman in the finals.

Ten looked like he might be able to force a sec-ond set as he took a quick 3-1 lead in the finals, but Hamman quickly regained control of the match and won six of the next seven games for the 7-4 victory and first place prize money.

Hamman was gracious when talking about his victory. “I got a bit of luck as the DCT finalists

Carl Stewart & Jason Sweet battled it out in the early rounds on the lower side of the bracket. The races to full handicap were very much appreciated since I was down early in the most of my matches and stayed patient to get back in them. I had a good time and the Stingers food kept me going during the long haul that ended just after last call. Janelle and Jimmy always run a good tournament.” Hamman commented.

Complete Payouts:1st Mike Hamman $6902nd Tenadore Lee $4703rd Ben Sutherland $2604th Nick Cipiti $1605th Joey Barrera $505th Carl Stewart $50

Reich Undefeated For One Pocket WinBrian Reich went through a field of six-teen players to score an undefeated win at Bullshoot-ers’ One Pocket Madness event on April 13th.

Terry Os-borne would match Brian win for win as they made their way through the winners side of the event. Reich had wins over Bernie Pettipiece, Brett Huth and Tyson Cole. Osborne had wins over Larry Olson, Paul Feltman Jr. and Tres Kane.

Reich would get the better of Osborne 2-0 in the hot-seat match and Osborne would think better of the hour and forfeit from there.

On the one loss side, Paul Feltman had bounced back from the loss to Terry and was making his way through the left side of the brackets. After a 2-0 win over Tres, Feltman would take advantage of the forfeit win over Osborne and the finals between Feltman and Reich were underway.

The finals were a true battle with Feltman holding leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before Reich would win the case game for the 3-2 win and first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Brian Reich $2302nd Paul Feltman Jr. $1703rd Terry Osborne $1104th Tres Kane $70

Avalos & Perez Win 480 ScotchBill Van Der Weyst & Chris Negrin teamed up to take the hot-seat at Max & Ted’s 480 Bar’s Scotch Doubles event on April 13th, but they had no answer for Carlos Avalos & Cee Perez in the finals.

Van Der Weyst & Negrin took the hot-seat with a convincing 7-1 win over Tina Hammers & Mike Os-born.

On the one loss side, Tina & Mike found Carlos & Cee waiting. Carlos & Cee had lost their first match of the day to Tina & Mike 6-4, but no one had been able to hand Carlos & Cee a second loss.

Unfortunately for Tina & Mike, the semi-finals would be another 7-1 scoreline that they would be on the wrong side of.

The double elimination finals would be won by Carlos & Cee 7-1 and then 7-4 for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Carlos Avalos & Cee Perez $4452nd Bill Van Der Weyst & Chris Negrin $1853rd Tina Hammers & Mike Osborn $120

Eleven singles and two Scotch Doubles teams competed in the APA Single Nationals Tourna-ment held in Las Vegas Nevada on April 24th through the 28th. Will Sexton and Scott Henley were the top performers representing Phoenix finishing in seventeenth place in their respective skill level groups from a field of more than one thousand players. Will repeated his performance from last year and moved to a skill level nine during the competition while topping some of the very best players in the country. Though this was Scott’s first time at a National Event, he played extremely well and showed great composure while working his way through the brackets in the skill level four division. Other players repre-senting Phoenix at this event were Dede Burum, Tashana Williams, Christie Sprong, Max Sperry, Jamie Goodwin, Jeremy Zastrow, Luis (Kar-loz) Chavez, Francisco Sarmiento, and George Stalter.

Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles teams were Tim and Nancy Witts, and Brad Andrews and Polly Hughes. Tim and Nancy are a husband and wife team that has been playing together for several years, including this same event last year. They play on a five person team and they also com-pete on a Jack and Jill doubles team that plays at Bullshooters every Friday night. It is from this J&J Scotch Doubles division that they qualified to compete in Vegas. Tim is no stranger to the APA National scene. He is an active National Referee during the Team Nationals that are played in August, and he and his wife Nancy are big supporters of the APA. Brad and Polly qualified for this event by winning a special Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles tournament that was held at Main Street Billiards on Valentine Day. This tournament is a yearly event that qualifies the doubles teams to go to Las Vegas to compete for

$25000 in cash and prizes. You can find Brad and Polly playing at Main Street Billiards and the Hambone bar and grill in Mesa on their 5 person team every week. The Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles tour-nament is incorporated into the Singles program each April at the APA Single National Tournament. APA pays for the participants to travel, stay and play in the event. Singles players qualify on a local board, and then win at the Regional level, and you are off to Vegas on the APA. All this for just $15 cost to play on the local board with 7 other players.

The Single National Tournament is the prequel to the Team Nationals that will be played in August. The APA Team Nationals is listed in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records ‘as the largest pool tournament in the world. Over 1400 teams competed in last year’s event and over $1.7 million was given out in all the National events.

Anyone interested in joining the APA Pool League can contact your local APA League Operators.

Thunder Mountain Open ResultsThe 24th annual Thunder Mountain Open (TMO) steel tip darts tournament was held April 12 – 14, 2013 in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The top four finishers in the singles events (men’s and women’s) earn points in the American Dart Organiza-tion (ADO) national ranking system. The results were:

Cricket Men’s Singles1st Mike Neubert (SADA)2nd Robert Preston (LBDA)3rd Terry Deavisne (CADL)4th Adam Sevada (CRDA) Cricket Ladies Singles1st Cris Froman (SADA)2nd Kim Swift (ADL)3rd Anissa Radetski (SADA)4th Kelly Sanders (SVDA)

501 Men’s Singles1st Robert Preston (LBDA)2nd Gregor Cruickshank (SADA/TDC)3rd Quintin Fitterer (LCDA)4th Dallas Cullins (ADL)

501 Ladies Singles1st Cris Froman (SADA)2nd Kim Swift (ADL)3rd Anissa Radetski (SADA)4th Tami (NMDA)

The above players were from the following leagues.ADL Arizona Darts League (Phoenix, AZ area)CADL Central Arizona Dart League (West Phoenix-Glendale, AZ area)CRDA Colorado River Dart Association (Parker, AZ area)LBDA London Bridge Darts Association (Lake Havasu City, AZ area)LCDA Las Cruces (NM) Dart Associations (Las Cruces, NM area)NMDA New Mexico Dart Association (Albuquerque, NM area)SADA Southern Arizona Darting Association (Tucson, AZ area)SVDA Sierra Vista Dart Association (Sierra Vista, AZ area)TDC Tucson Dart Club (Tucson, AZ area)

Mike, only about half the peo-ple went to NDA this year from last year, what do you think is the reason or reasons? In my opinion there are lots of reasons for this. First of all you have so many choices on big tournaments to travel to.

You have NDA, Bull Shooter (Chicago), Darts Live, Phoenix Darts, Medalists, and more.

On the west coast, we haveThe Laughlin Desert Classic and lots of steel tournaments to choose from as well. In a one month period you have NDA, Bull Shooter and Darts Live Super shoot.

Who can get off work that much, let alone afford all of those.

The second reason is that NDA has chosen to make a rule excluding certain locations and

leagues from sending players if all theboards aren’t part of NDA’s vendors. Whomever led them down this path must have had blinders on. No other sanctioned body has this rule.

Years ago NDA and Medalist were not on good terms, but this rule wasn’t around, many places had Medalist, Arachnid, and Valley Boards. This rule should go away and fast if NDA is to survive the onslaught from theseother Board Manufacturers. The play-ers who have been loyal to NDA for all these years are up in arms on this deci-sion, and it will only get worse. The NDA needs to step back and throw a little trust to their players and vendors to make sure sanctioned NDA matches are played on the right boards. At this point they are questioning their players and vendors integrity and that doesn’t help anyone.

These are my opinions and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Holland & Chavez win Bull Shooters’ Blind Draw Blast

The turnout of lesser-skilled players may have been fewer than hoped for in Bull Shooters’ first-ever blind draw pool tournament; but the efficiency, enjoy-ment, and results, were well exceeding of anything that anyone had expected.

After a first round loss to Jamie Goodwin & Roger long, the team of Selena Holland & Karloz Chavez undauntedly worked their way through the left side of the board until coming back to reach the final match against Frank Alvarez Jr. & Brad Johnson.

Alvarez & Johnson had looked like they were the team to beat from the very start. They were, after all, the team with the most collective experience in the tournament. But it wasn’t meant to be, as Holland & Chavez double-dipped them in the final match to take home first place money and the thrill of being champions in Bull Shooters’ first-ever Blind Draw Blast.

Blind Draw Blast was the idea of Bull Shooters’ owner, Mike Bates, and it was adeptly promoted and directed by Abelecio “Abie” Padilla. Blind draw doubles tournaments are a common thing in darts, but pool players have long been ac-customed to picking their own partners. The Blind Draw Blast showed how well blind draw can work when one of Arizona’s finest players finished out of the money, while a pair of relative unknowns won the whole thing.

Bull Shooters wants to make Blind Draw Blast a regularly monthly tournament, so look for that to start in June.

Final Payouts:1st Selena Holland / Karloz Chavez $3402nd Frank Alvarez Jr. / Brad Johnson $2203rd Jamie Goodwin / Roger Long $1204th Arte Lewis / Chuck Evans $60

Moore & Turner At KittysIn order to win a twenty one team scotch doubles event after losing your first match, a team has to win nine straight matches. Just ask Randell Moore & Ernie Turner, because that is exactly what they did at Kitty’s 12 & Under Scotch event on April 20th.

Moore & Turner lost their first match to Kitty Carroll and Ryan Daw 7-2, but they wouldn’t lose again.

The hot-seat was taken by Tom Johnson & Reuben Garza, with a 7-4 win over Pat Leonard & Dan Young.

Pat & Dan would then lose to Randell & Ernie 7-2 to finish in third place.

Tom & Reuben looked to be in good shape in the first set of the finals as they held a 5-2 lead in the race to seven. Randell & Ernie would then take control and win the next five games for the 7-5 win.

Randell & Ernie weren’t done yet, as they then won the first four games of the second set and held that lead for a 7-3 win and first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Randall Moore & Ernie Turner $6052nd Tom Johnson & Reuben Garza $260 3rd Pat Leonard & Dan Young $1854th Ray Lapanid & Eric Winemiller $65

Sexton over Martinez for Kitty’s Win

Will Sexton held off defending champion Amado Martinez to win Kittys’ 7’s and Under 9-Ball tournament on April 13th.

Sexton sent Amado to the one loss side in the hot-seat match with a 7-3 score-line, but Amado made quick work of Eric Lacey on the left side of the board and earned another shot at Sexton in the double elimination finals.

Martinez kept on rolling in the finals and scored a quick 7-2 victory over Sexton to force a second set to determine the final winner.

That winner would be Sexton as he matched Amado’s 7-2 scoreline from the previous match for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Will Sexton $3202nd Amado Martinez $1703rd Eric Lacey $30

Lutz and Reddin Win Kittys ScotchTom Lutz & Crash Reddin got back to their win-ning ways as they defeated Chuck Bobbitt & Ricky Jones two out of three matches to win Kittys’ 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on April 27th.

Tom & Crash were unbeatable in the hot-seat match where they crushed Chuck & Ricky 8-0, but they would find out later that Chuck & Ricky were not going to go away that easily.

On the one loss side, Chris Negrin & Tony Norton were mowing down oppo-nents but came up one game short as they lost to Chuck & Ricky hill-hill and settled for third place.

The first set of the double elimination finals saw Chuck & Ricky take an early 3-1 lead and hold on to that lead for the 6-3 victory (6-8 race).

The second set couldn’t have been closer with the score tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5. At 5-5, Chuck & Ricky needed one more game for first place but they would not get it. Tom & Crash dug down and won the last three games for the hill-hill win and first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Tom Lutz & Crash Reddin $6002nd Chuck Bobbitt & Ricky Jones $3403rd Chris Negrin & Tony Norton $1704th Bill Van Der Weyst & Manuel Steele $50

What Would A Sucker Do?

By Jacqueline KarolHouse Pro at DownLo Billiards in Chico, California

If you look around the room and don’t see any suckers….YOU are the sucker!

You are playing 9-ball. What do you do?

Idea #1: “Hit the 1-ball into the clustered 3 and 4-ball and hope something goes!”

Idea #2: “Bank the 1-ball into the corner!”

Idea #3: “Hit the 1-ball paper thin on the right side to leave the 1-ball safe behind the 3 and 4-ball cluster”

Suckers…

Why aren’t these the best ideas?

Idea #1: It is very unlikely that you will pocket a ball this way.Idea #2: A bank shot here is low percentage and there is no future or payoff for doing that because the other balls are tied up.Idea #3: Not a terrible idea, but there is a more powerful option.

Answer:Notice that the 9-ball is near the corner pocket. You can play safe here AND set yourself up for a win by hiding the cue ball behind the 3 and 4-ball cluster and send the 1-ball near the 9-ball. Now it is likely that you will get ball-in-hand and be able to win the game by making an easy combo!

Arizona Billiard & Dart News May 2013

Chet Lahti & John Marquis teamed up to take the hot-seat and then split in the finals of a large Groggy’s Scotch Doubles event on April 5th.

A whopping thirty three teams came out on this day and play would run late into the night before a split could even be negotiated.

Lahti & Marquis would follow up a 5-4 win over Dana Moore & Al Ruiz with a 5-3 win over Tenadore Lee & Billy Coulston for the hot-seat.

Meanwhile, the left side of the board was seeing multiple battles carried out. Jim Digregorio & Donald Mangahas defeated Pete Barrios & Ernie Turner to keep them out of the money. At the same time, Ricky Tyrell & Skyler Flaherty were keeping Bill Van Der Weyst & JR Ascension out of the month in 7th place.

Moore & Ruiz righted their ship after the loss to Chet & John and defeated Digregorio & Mangahas in 5th place. Joining Jim & Don in 5th place was Seth Johnson & Eric Lervold, who lost to Tyrell & Flaherty.

Tyrell & Flaherty would settle for 4th place after a hill-hill loss to Dana & Al, but Dana & Al would be the next to exit the tournament with a 6-3 loss to Ten & Billy.

Considering the late hour, the tournament was split at that point with Chet & John taking the lions share of the prize money.

Complete Payouts:1st Chet Lahti & John Marquis $1,0802nd Tenadore Lee & Billy Coulston $6003rd Dana Moore & Al Ruiz $1854th Ricky Tyrell & Skyler Flaherty $805th Jim Digregorio & Don Mangahas $255th Seth Johnson & Eric Lervold $25
