Wendover Celebrates Monday 4 June Wendover Celebrates will see the biggest event Wendover has witnessed since the millennium. On 4 June 2012, Wendover will celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Games with the return of the Carnival – a parade, fun and games, plus live music and pyrotechnics! The celebrations will begin at 11am with entertainment on the Manor Waste, with local

retailers decorating the High Street to celebrate the Jubilee and the London Games. At 12 noon, a Carnival Parade will start at Ashbrook Park on the Aylesbury Road, proceed along the High Street and on to the Wendover Campus (formerly Wendover House School), where an afternoon and evening of Carnival entertainment will await you. The Parade includes entries from many local groups including the local schools, churches, scouts, guides, the RAF mascot, plus jugglers, stilt walkers, and a rock and roll Piper to lead the way! The Carnival afternoon starts at 1pm with the arrival of The Parade at the Wendover Campus. Entertainment then includes the much anticipated It's a Knockout competition (advanced bookings via the website), the one and only Colonel Custard on stage, the Mix 96 Bouncy Castle, plus a demonstration from the GB Paralympic Basketball team. Our stage will also see music, dance and demonstrations from local groups and organisations throughout the afternoon. Local charities, organisation and businesses will also be supporting the event with market stalls, plus their own fun, games and entertainment. In the evening, Wendover will rock to live music from Deadcells (Battle of the Bands

Hay Fever Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen that affects up to 1 in 5 people between March and July. Typical symptoms include sneezing, an itchy, runny or blocked nose, and itchy or watery eyes. Symptoms are typically

worse in the evening and when outside.

If you suffer from hay fever reduce your exposure to pollen as much as possible by:

• staying indoors as much as possible,

and keeping windows and doors shut

• washing your face or showering after being outdoors, especially after visits to the countryside, and

• keeping car windows closed, and consider buying a pollen filter for the air vents in your car.

In keeping with local health pr io r i t i es , p rescr ip t ions for antihistamines for hay fever are not available from the health centre and patients are requested to buy their own medication. All of the commonly used hay fever remedies are available over the counter, i.e. without a prescription. Antihistamines are generally very e f f e c t i v e – w e r e c o m m e n d LORATADINE or CERTIRIZINE which rarely cause drowsiness. A steroid

n a s a l s p r a y s u c h a s BECLOMETASONE or FLUTICASONE (Flixonase) may ease a blocked or runny nose. This should be started before the hay fever season and continued throughout. It is important to use nasal sprays correctly – follow the instructions that come in the box. SODIUM CROMOGLICATE eye drops may relieve itchy, watery eyes. Generic products are generally cheaper than branded ones, and prices are very reasonable, for example 30 X loratadine 10mg tablets are available for less than £1 at leading supermarkets and on-line pharmacies. If you get chest symptoms such as wheezing or coughing a lot when you get hay fever please make an appointment to see a doctor. HS2 HS2: Legal action commences Wendover HS2 is delighted to announce that we have now reached the initial fundraising target in our legal fighting fund. This forms our contribution towards the legal costs of taking the Government to court by Judicial Review over High Speed 2. Our sincere thanks go out to all those who have contributed. The fighting fund will stay open for the time being. The claimant in this legal action is the HS2 Action Alliance (HS2AA Ltd) working closely with us and many other action and residents' groups. As seen in the news, HS2AA Ltd announced that they will be proceeding with legal action on two fronts. One case concerns environmental issues, and the other is about fighting for a fair deal for compensation. In both cases, HS2AA argues, the Government has failed to follow the proper processes required. A spokesman for HS2AA Ltd said: "We have two strong legal teams who are specialists in their fields and believe we have two powerful cases that Government must now answer. SJ Berwins with David Elvin, QC, of Landmark Chambers are handling our environmental case, and Leigh Day & Co with David Wolfe, QC, of Matrix Chambers our compensation case."

Wendover HS2 Campaign Team

Six minutes to save the Chilterns! Government documents show that an HS2 route alongside the M1 would only take London-Birmingham trains six minutes longer than the chosen route through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Beauty. Yet because of the way small time-savings are valued in the HS2 business case (and totalled over a 60-year period) and because it would be slightly more expensive, the Government says the route alongside the motorway is unacceptable. We must keep stressing the unique quality of the Chilterns AONB and argue that if the Government wishes to build the line, it should follow a route alongside existing motorways and not run through protected countryside. One way you could help is by writing to Prince Charles, at Clarence House, London, SW1A 1BA, telling him of your concern that the current HS2 plan with its viaduct across Wendover Dean will cause a terrible eyesore in the protected Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You could mention that the Government has rejected less damaging routes alongside existing motorways because the route through the Chilterns would be just 6 minutes quicker. The Government’s appraisal of the project’s environmental sustainability also reveals that the M1 route is less damaging environmentally.

The Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust on Monday 26 March took the unprecedented action of writing to the European Commission claiming that the UK Government chose the High Speed Rail (HS2) route between London and Birmingham without taking proper account of its environmental impacts. The Government did not carry out a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) which would have required a thorough investigation of the environmental impacts of the HS2 route and viable alternatives. As a result, the process used by HS2 Ltd ignored vital information about the potential impacts of HS2 on nature reserves, protected species and important wildlife sites, claims the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust. Philippa Lyons, Chief Executive of BBOWT, explains why the Trust is taking this action: “The Government believed it wasn’t necessary to carry out an SEA. As a result they didn’t know about the nature reserves cut through by the route, or the precious woodland habitats of Bernwood Forest, where the very rare Bechstein’s bats were discovered by a local bat group. “The Wildlife Trust has never before been driven to complain to the European Commission, but the refusal of this Government to take proper account of wildlife

issues when deciding on HS2 is beyond belief. Even now it is refusing to take our advice and carry out proper environmental assessments for Phase 2 of the HS2 route.” The Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust is collaborating with four other Wildlife Trusts affected by HS2 Phase 1, other conservation groups and the HS2 Action Alliance, which recently sent a letter to the Government calling for a Judicial Review of its decision to go ahead without doing an SEA. “The European Commission will not investigate our complaint while the UK courts are examining the same issues,” says Philippa Lyons. “But by submitting the complaint now, these important issues are on the Commissioner’s desk ready for immediate investigation. If the UK courts either refuse to examine them or decide they do not contravene UK legislation, the EC will be able to investigate them instead.” The Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust highlighted the impacts of the HS2 proposed route on wildlife in its response to the Government’s consultation during 2011. Thousands of responses raised similar concerns, with the vast majority calling on the Government to think again about HS2, but these were ignored by the Secretary of State when the route was announced in January this year.

Business The Russell Arms When the Russell Arms went up for sale last December, the Butlers Cross community wasn’t prepared to lose its only pub. Juggling full time jobs and family commitments, five local businessmen mobilised villagers and organised meetings. As a result, over 70 supporters pledged their financial backing, contracts have now been exchanged and the search is on for a new tenant. Although structurally the building is sound, refurbishment work is needed and the plan is for the pub to open in time for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Villagers are keen to create a warm, welcoming environment serving excellent pub food and using locally sourced products and drinks. This venture is a great example of what can be achieved when people work together and it has further cemented what was already a strong community bond. Financial contributions are still being accepted and anyone who would be able to assist with renovations or interested in the tenancy should contact [email protected].

Wendover resident writes surprise best seller Wendover resident Peter James was surprised to find his novel Deferral of Guilt at number one in Amazon’s top hundred best

sellers in April, just days after launching it in a free promotion. Having spent three years writing the novel he decided to ‘self publish’ it as a gift to friends and family, but was then persuaded to place it on Amazon as a Kindle ebook. Within three days it had shot to number one in both the general fiction and crime categories with nearly twelve thousand downloads in its first five days. Peter James, says he is astonished by the demand. ‘The arrival of the Kindle has evidently revolutionised the book publishing industry making it possible for anyone who has a novel in them to reach a wide international audience!’ Written under the pen name of James Parr (to avoid confusion with his more famous crime writer namesake) Deferral of Guilt is set in and around Sarratt. As Watford detectives Pat O’Donnell and Alex Paterson piece together a story of murder, blackmail, rape and revenge each man is pursued by his own private demons, for both have guilty secrets that threaten to overwhelm them even before their investigation is completed.

Community Oil Buying Scheme The Community Oil Buying Scheme launched by Community Impact Bucks at the start of January is going from strength to strength with members in 19 communities around the county: Akeley, Aston Sandford, Bryants Bottom, Chackmore, Chearsley, Cuddington, Dinton, Dunsmore, Haddenham, Long Crendon, Mentmore, Oving, Preston Bissett, S t e wk l e y , T h o r n b o r o u g h , U p p e r Winchendon, Wavendon, Wendover and Worminghall. We are very keen to offer the opportunity to benefit from bulk buying to other communities in Buckinghamshire. On 30 March the price paid by members was 60.3p per litre, which compares very well to the highest price we were quoted of 74p per litre and an average price of 65p per litre. So if you buy oil and don’t already get the benefit of buying in bulk, why not consider becoming a member. If your community doesn’t already have a co-ordinator, why not volunteer? The time commitment is small, the benefits are large – and don’t forget co-ordinators can join the scheme for free. There’s plenty of information on our website at http://www.communityimpactbucks.org or contact us by email or phone 0845 389 0389

Aston Clinton, Buckland, Drayton Beauchamp, Stoke Mandeville Weston Turville, Wendover, Halton A number of important local issues were covered at the Wendover Local Area Forum (LAF) meeting in Weston Turville on 4 April. Brian Thompson, Halton Parish Council, spoke of the links made with Michael Foote from Weston Turville Parish Council, where both parishes realised they could develop a project to better meet local transport needs. Brian explained that Halton had undertaken an extensive survey of residents. This information, combined with that from Weston Turville parish, was incorporated into a proposal taken forward at a recent meeting with representat ives from Arriva, Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC), Halton and Weston Turville parish councils. Arriva assess the viability of the proposal to divert the existing route through Weston Turville and Halton village centres. An update will be given at the next LAF meeting in July.

Foster carers needed! Joan Smith, BCC, explained that there are currently 377 children and young people being looked after in care homes, foster homes and independent carers. If you are interested in fostering, call the team on 01296 382555 or [email protected]

Domestic violence Sue Burke, BCC, explained about the different types of domestic violence, which includes control over a person or physical violence against a partner (male or female) or perhaps an older child against an elderly parent. Domestic violence does not discriminate against age, gender or class. There are many agencies who can help including the National Domestic Violence Helpline who can provide confidential information and advice on 0808 2000 247.

LAF funding: Wendover Decides The Wendover LAF will be running Wendover Decides again in 2012 but with a different format. Projects meeting local priorities will be invited shortly to come forward with proposals for a share of £10,000. The top three projects will receive full funding (up to £3,000 per project) and the next two projects will receive part-funding. The LAF also agreed £5,000 funding for a range of activities in the parishes of Aston Clinton, Weston Turville and Wendover for young people, funding for support workers for Wendover and Weston Turville youth clubs and the development of a youth council/forum for the Wendover local area. For information on Wendover Decides young people’s funding, [email protected].

Update from RAF Halton Wing Commander Stephen Borthwick noted that around 13,000 service personnel will be involved with the Olympics with around 7500 involved in venue security and some will be involved in ceremonial events. Aylesbury Vale RAF staff will be trained at RAF Halton and will be providing ushers for the Stoke Mandeville torch relay and the Paralympics flame festival. There will be a restricted zone for flying, which extends up to the Halton runway (but aircraft can still use the runway), so there may be a slight reduction in aircraft traffic towards the Wendover direction. As well as training 1200 recruits during the year, RAF Halton will be training more reservists. This has the consequence of more weekend operations, with reservists taking a two-week course running over the middle weekend. There may be more use of the rifle range on Saturdays, but Halton will work to keep disruption to a minimum.

Neighbourhood Police Update Sergeant Bryn Scott, Thames Valley Police, noted that the restructure of the local areas has been completed and Wendover Neighbourhood will keep its three PCSOs and three PCs. However, the consultation on front counter services has resulted in a

reduction of front counter hours at Wendover to three days a week between 10-2pm. Crime figures were down until a recent spate of shed burglaries and also an incident of someone driving along spray-painting parked cars. A person is in custody about the latter incident. Work is actively taking place to reduce speeding through villages and enforcement will take place in specific areas including Brook End, Weston Turville. Bryn also noted that the Police have been following up reports of speeding HGVs along the Aylesbury Road although subsequent checks have not so far proven this to be an issue. Community messaging, where Police advise local residents about specific incidents in their area or other communications of interest, has been rebranded as neighbourhood alerts. People interested in joining this service should go online to www.thamesvalleyalert.co.uk. The next Wendover Local Area Forum will be held on 4 July from 7pm-9pm at Buckland Village Hall. For more information please email [email protected] or telephone 01296 383839 / 383409. http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/bcc/our_communities/wendover.page

Aces High New Exhibition Doors open Wed 1 May 2012 in Normandy Aces High Fine Art will this summer be opening a new exhibition at the recently renovated Utah Beach Museum in Normandy, displaying an extensive range of aviation and military paintings and prints to the many thousands of visitors and veterans visiting this world-leading D-Day museum.

Following a year-long restoration the Utah Beach Museum is home to more than 3000m² of exhibits related to the events that took place on 6 June 1944. The new ‘star’ is an authentic Lockheed B-26 Marauder, one of only five still existing in the world today. The twin-engine, medium bomber will be displayed in the colours of Major David H. Dewhurst Jr who flew 85 combat missions in Europe with the 553rd Bomb Squadron, 386th Bomb Group, part of the US 9th Air Force. “Our new exhibition enhances our commitment to both current and future customers of Aces High as we continue to expand our range of high quality military and aviation products. We are delighted to be working with the Utah Beach Museum to preserve the memory of those who gave their lives for our freedom.”

Over the year No2 has encouraged its patrons to donate the value of a cup of coffee or tea (in lieu of payment for their hot beverages) on a Monday, to raise funds for a local cause. For the last 8 weeks these donations have been collected in support of Florence Nightingale Hospice and the total raised was £550. The customers at No2 often generously gave more than the value of their drinks, which is very much appreciated. Whilst the nominated coffee cause has now changed, No2 continue to support Florence Nightingale. On Wednesday 2 May there is a “Summery Fun” wine tasting taking place at No2 in suppor t of F lorence N ight ingale Hospice. Tickets are available for £20 per person including a £5 donation to FNH, also any purchases on the night will generate a further 10% of sales value as a donation to FNH, the more you spend the more No2 donates on your behalf. The nominated fundraising cause is currently Wendover Celebrates ~ an event on 4 June for the whole community in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee.

YOGA – Learn more about it…how to find a class and choose what’s right for you. There are many different styles of yoga based on the same physical postures (called poses), each has a particular emphasis. Here is a quick guide to the most popular types of yoga, the benefits, and where to find classes in the community to help you choose what is right for you. I am often asked by clients or in various classes to recommend tai chi / yoga / pilates classes to people who have been told to stretch, strengthen, relax, or improve core strength for instance. Although I do my own research, there is a quick and easy link on-line that lists local yoga classes. From Yoga for Teenagers, to Laughter Yoga see the wide choice we have in our area. www.localyogaclasses.co.uk Hatha, which is a general style, usually slow-paced and gentle and provides a good introduction to the basic yoga poses. Vinyasa, which means breath-synchronized movement, tends to be more active poses where movement is matched with breath including a series of poses called Sun Salutations. Ashtanga, is a fast-paced, intense style of

yoga, a flow with a set series of poses always in the same order, which is more physically demanding. Power Yoga, does takes its inspiration from Ashtanga, although the sequences may vary. Iyengar focuses on alignment, and usually emphasizes holding poses over long periods versus moving quickly from one pose to the next (flow). Iyengar practice encourages the use of props such as yoga blankets, blocks and straps, in order to bring the body into alignment. Bikram; this style is more generally referred to as Hot Yoga. It is practised in a 95 to 100 degree room, which allows for a loosening of tight muscles and profuse sweating, which is thought to be cleansing. Cat Booker provided this article, and has a new fitness yoga class launching in Wendover, at Wendover Memorial Hall at 1pm on Wednesdays. Visit to Wendover Junior School Since being awarded Eco-School Ambassador status last summer, Wendover CE Junior School is being seen as a beacon school for sustainability. In March we were v i s i t e d b y t w o Argentinians, Natalia B e n z a q u e n a n d Damasia Ezcurra. They are the directors of an e n v i r o n m e n t a l organisation in Buenos Aires called Eco Educarte. This organisation implements a green schools programme in kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools throughout Argentina. The British Council had paid for both these women to come and visit Britain to learn how English schools implement sustainability in their curriculum. We were the only primary school chosen for this purpose. Sian Chattle, Eco School coordinator, was helped by the school’s Eco Committee and Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) to show Natalia and Damasia around the school and answer any questions. The children proudly showed the visitors their wildlife garden, which includes a pond, orchard, vegetable

beds, plastic bottle greenhouse and bug hotels. They also took them around the 18 month old

wood land and la rge wildflower meadow, which the school shares with The John Hampden School, and shared information about our recycling and energy saving activities. Natalia and Damasia have since written to us saying: “We really enjoyed visiting your school and being guided by the children, all of them so involved in the project. We really congratulate you for all your work in the school, we know

what it is to work in a school, and finding time for these kind of activities is not so easy, you are really an example and thank you so much for receiving us at your school.”

C.C.T.V. for Wendover? During public participation, Councillors were given a presentation on the benefits and effectiveness of C.C.T.V. in the fight against crime and the fear of crime, by one of W endover ’s neighbourhood watch coordinators together with a fellow scheme member - himself a professional security manager. The Council was told the number of neighbourhood watch warning letters being issued was on the increase and a private residential C.C.T.V. system had proved very successful in providing important evidence relating to anti-social behaviour and suspicious callers. It was put to the meeting that the installation of three strategically positioned cameras in the central area of Wendover under a Council sponsored scheme, would play a key role in the fight and it was hoped the Council would support the idea. Should Councillors wish to consider the matter further, it will need to be discussed as a formal agenda item at a later meeting.

Vale of Aylesbury Plan – Stakeholder Forum Receiving feedback from the forum, Councillors heard that the response to A.V.D.C.’s consultation had been “poor” and unsurprisingly, the results were mostly for the lower housing range options. The meeting was also told it was likely to be at least two years before the Vale of Aylesbury Plan made it to the statute book resulting in a

current ‘planning vacuum’ in which some developers were submitting opportunistic applications.

A bright future? Wendover could soon begin to see a different type of glow from the Parish Council’s 350 lighting columns under a proposal to replace the existing sodium lights with light emitting diodes (L.E.D’s). Although still at the planning stage, the aim would be to update a significant number of lights each year and Councillors heard that the new ones would have a much longer life, save on energy and maintenance costs and cause less light pollution.

HS2 Community Forum “Appalling” and “horrendous” were two of the words used in a summary of the March forum held in the library room involving representatives from HS2 and various local organisations including Councils, Amenity and Action Groups. It was also reported that an element of those attending from outside of Wendover had allegedly “resolved a set of quite destructive tactics” and the way they treated the Chairman of the meeting and the representatives from HS2 was “disgraceful.” Councillors were told the next forum would not be for another two months but in the meantime the fight to stop HS2 would go on although mitigation had to be worked on as well. Mid Bucks Beekeepers Association May is a busy time in beekeeping with the colonies building up for the main forage season and beekeepers trying to keep up with the growth. We are moving towards the swarming season which Beekeepers try to manage to their benefit. If you wish to report a swarm full details can be found on our website www.mbbka.org.uk. This year members of the Association are also putting a lot of effort into preparing for Wendover Celebrates on 4 June. We have a team working on a float for the parade and a second team focusing on the stand at the Wendover Campus. If the weather is kind to us we hope to be able to put on a flying bees demonstration giving carnival goers the opportunity to experience close up the life of a bee colony.

Wendover Twinning Association

We would like to thank everyone who bought raffle tickets on our stall at the Charity Market in March. Congratulations to the winners – we hope you enjoyed the contents of your hampers. The profit raised will be put to very good use, helping to fund entertainments for the party of 33 visitors from Liffré who will be with us for the annual Town Exchange during the last weekend of April. We would also like to thank those readers of Wendover News who contacted us with offers of hosting, and we hope that they will enjoy meeting our visitors and taking part in the activities. In next month’s Wendover News you’ll be able to read all about the weekend.

Barbara Jefford Chair, Wendover Twinning Association

Costa Coffee The Costa Coffee franchisee has appealed against the refusal of planning permission to operate in the former Barclays Bank Building. The Wendover Society surveyed the members of its email consultation panel on this issue. There was a 76% vote from the 150 members of the panel. 108 members were opposed to the appeal, 4 were in favour and 2 were neutral. As a result the Society is

opposing the appeal on a variety of grounds including the likelihood of traffic problems from the twice daily deliveries envisaged, potential noise and disturbance to neighbours from use of the garden and the effects on one of the finest parts of the Conservation Area if pavement seating evolved.

Mike Beard Chair, The Wendover Society

Span Training & Development On Sunday 1 April the annual Span hair competition was held in Cowley, Oxford with the theme being The Oscars. Scruples had four trainees and a stylist entered across the three entree categories. The standard of work the competitors produced was extremely high and despite this stiff competition Ami Jo Porter was awarded a Second place in the open category. Congratulations to Ami Jo and well done to the girls who entered. Yvonne Bone

Thank you A big thank you to everyone who supported the MS Centre Art exhibition on 10 & 11 March. It was successful in all ways, a delight to view, an opportunity to meet friends and raised over £14,000. We are all looking forward to the exhibition in our new building next year.

Mimi’s Mission Congratulations to our friends who successfully completed the Reading Half Marathon for Mimi’s Mission. Particular thanks are due to Jackie Robinson and JPR Fitness for sponsoring shirts and organising

training runs. Thanks are also due to all the generous sponsors, whose total contributions exceeded £9,000.

On Easter Sunday, over 100 children and their families joined in an Easter Egg Hunt organised by No 2 Pound Street and Churches Together in Wendover at Wendover Campus. A fantastic array of cakes was donated to provide a tempting refreshment stall. The children had a great time searching the grounds for those elusive chocolate eggs. A bouncy castle was provided by Aylesbury’s Fun4Kidz, and a produce stall selling various hand-made gifts also proved very popular. All of the proceeds from the day were donated to Mimi's Mission and over £400 was raised.

Tragedy in Terrick Our sympathies go to the family of Mark Alan Camber, who worked at Kings Farm Shop since 1985. Shortly before midnight on Monday 16 April, Mark was involved in a collision with a car in Nash Lee Road while cycling home and died at the scene. Mark was a very conscientious employee who always kept to himself and had worked here for so long that he was part of Kings Farm. His quiet way and dry sense of humour will be sadly missed by staff and customers. The funeral will be at Amersham Crematorium on 3 May at 3.15pm. Gary King

The Olympics is a once-in-a-lifetime event with up to 30,000 visitors a day coming to Eton Dorney and hopefully visiting attractions in Bucks. Buckinghamshire residents will be able to come along to see the Olympic torch relay procession as it goes through north Bucks and down to Stoke Mandeville/Aylesbury on 9 July (it also goes through south Bucks on another date).

Live Events on the big Screen All are welcome to see action from the Olympics on a huge public screen – in Amersham on 11 August and in Aylesbury Vale Park on 1 September where a number of exciting events will also be held in Market Square and Kingsbury Square. The Paralympics Flame Festival is being held in Stoke Mandeville but, due to space restrictions, another event will be held in Aylesbury town centre, with a live link through to Stoke Mandeville. Community Games A community could be your street, an estate, your colleagues at work, a ‘friends of’ group from your local park, your faith group, your children’s school… the list goes on. A community is simply a group of people that come together at some point to share and do things. You could, in fact, form your own new community and bring them together so that you can all be a part of the largest sports event this country has ever seen.

I’m interested - what do I do next? Go to www.communitygames.org.uk where you can find out more and express your interest. Then one of the team will contact

you and help you get started.

The Big Lunch The fourth annual Big Lunch will fall on Sunday 3 June, the same weekend as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Danielle Miles was born in the Royal Bucks Hospital, Aylesbury on 15 October 1985. She attended John Hampden First, Wendover C of E Middle (as they were then) and John Colet Upper Schools. As a school child Danielle was always busy with extra curricular activities such as playing the viola or in school and county netball teams. She also studied tap and modern dance at the Rozelle School of Dance and Drama taking weekly classes and performing in their annual show, often at the Civic Centre in Aylesbury. When very young, Danielle was always interested in jobs that ended in ist: geologist, zoologist, and so on. She chose to study chemistry because it is often seen as the middle science, touching maths, physics, biology, pharmacology and much more. It would let her keep most options open. She started a chemistry BSc course at Exeter in September 2004. She was getting a first for all her coursework and having the best year of her life. Then in November 2004 they were told that Exeter University was intending to shut down the expensive Chemistry department. Danielle was incredulous:

how could a ‘good’ university not have a core department?

Danielle helped to organise a 2000-strong protest a g a i n s t t h e c losures, and gave evidence to the Commons S c i e n c e a n d T e c h n o l o g y C o m m i t t e e ’ s inquiry, ‘Strategic Science Provision

in English Universities’ but the department closed so she decided to transfer to Leeds where she began in her second year on an integrated 4 year masters course with a year in industry, which was carried out at AstraZeneca in Charnwood, Loughborough. After getting a first for her MChem she decided to stay on for a PhD. Danielle’s PhD has been designing a protein like gel to treat back pain. The main aim of her project was to develop a peptide (small protein) gel that can be injected into the disc. This work provides the necessary understanding of the gels to enable them to be optimised for the treatment of disc degeneration. The findings also open up

a number of other applications for these exciting new materials.

During her PhD she was invited to give numerous academic talks and public lectures and in 2010 won the University of Leeds Postgraduate researcher of the year award and in 2011 was awarded the Faculty for Maths and Physical Sciences researcher of the year as well as winning the Kate Furneaux prize for the most meritorious non-academic contribution to postgraduate life in the School of Chemistry 2011. Danielle still manages to keep very busy in her spare time. She has always enjoyed dance and currently teaches swing dancing as well as participating in advanced classes and going to social dances and camps all around the country. She still rides her horse competitively at dressage, show jumping, cross country and for fun around the Yorkshire countryside as well as socialising with friends. On top of this Danielle comes back to Wendover every now and then to help out at the Aces High exhibitions in Back Street which is where she used to work, as well as to catch up with friends and family.

View from the Chair I would never have anticipated that the Parish Council could have existed without a Clerk, but survive the year it did, with a deputy Clerk who has worked extremely hard and for long hours to keep the ship afloat. Jill Bottomley has done a really sterling job and I cannot praise her too highly. We have appointed a temporary Consultant, Glyn Thomas, who will be helping us out over the next few months. Not knowing how long the status quo would last has been (and is) most frustrating but thank you Jill on behalf of the people of Wendover.

We have established a Speedwatch panel, with the support and training from the local constabulary, which means that every now and then, we report speeding to the local police who will then visit the offenders and have a chat. Our locations vary: the next will be based in South Street. Any suggestions for siting our equipment are always welcome. Our objective is simple – to make Wendover a safer place to live for ourselves, our families and our children.

Last month’s Parish Council meeting went well and a large number of items were discussed in front of local County and District Councillors as well as quite a number of members of the public. It’s always good to see different people attend at different times. We will always welcome you to join us. Thank you for your support over the last ‘Parish’ year – I look forward to more of the same.

Robert Duggan, Chairman

S106 Money: the story so far In March, WPC invited community projects to apply for funding from the S106 funds held by AVDC. This funding source arises as a result of the new homes built at St. Mary's Gate. There is still time to apply.

The criteria relating to the fund’s distribution are quite strict and as a result, of the three projects put forward, o n l y o n e w a s s u c c e s s f u l . Congratulations to the St Mary's Church group whose plan will benefit both Wendover youth’s and the broader community’s access to well equipped m ee t ing room s . Un f o r tuna te l y Wendover Cricket Club and the Youth Centre proposals didn't meet the S106 criteria on this occasion. WPC are happy to advise. WPC is about to make an application to help fund much needed improvements to the very popular London Road Skate Park and to the basketball court at Ashbrook recreation ground.

Annual Parish Meeting (18 Apr) The well attended and convivial meeting heard Chairman Robert Duggan explain how the challenges of the previous year had been met and the council’s vision for a very busy 2012/13.

Councillor Oliver Statham explained that WPC is considering the production of a Neighbourhood Plan in response to the government’s Localism Bill giving Wendover a clearly defined legal status in AVDC’s new Vale of Aylesbury Plan.

Councillor Bob Lewis, Chair of WPC’s finance committee, reported that the balance sheet is strong but there are a number of exceptional items, such as the necessary repairs to the Clock Tower, that will need careful financial management and a determined approach to finding grant funding.

WPC had invited Isabel Edgar Briançon from AVDC to talk to the meeting about changes to the waste collection service that start on Tuesday 4 September for Wendover residents. Isabel is happy to hear from anyone with any questions or queries - AVDC 01296 585858.

The Chairman then acknowledged WPC’s Deputy Clerk and her amazing commitment to keeping the Council working effectively during the long absence through sickness of the Clerk.

There were displays from various groups WPC has been involved with this year including Bucks Carers, HS2, St Mary’s Church, W Celebrates, W Twinning Association, W Youth Centre, W News and W Community Car. There was also information about various activities undertaken during the year with Councillors present to answer questions. Many thanks to all who contributed, including refreshments from Ami and Steve of The Coffee Stop.
