I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking... Recently, I gave a sermon, in part remarking on the number of holidays we celebrate in April and May. While I spoke to the idea that the holidays should be a vehicle for change and self reflection, I have been thinking about three particular holidays that occur within a single week every spring; Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom Hazikaron – Israel Memorial Day, and Yom

Ha'atzma'ut – Israel Independence Day. In a recent article, Alan Joffe reminded us that Israel Independence Day is celebrated on the fifth of Iyyar, the Hebrew correspondent of Israel's May 14 declaration of independence. Certain ultra-religious Jews have long protested the occasion. The Neturei Karta have declared it a "day of mourning for Torah-faithful Jews" and burn Israeli flags in protest. The next day, May 15, is commemorated by Palestinians as "Nakba Day," the day of "catastrophe." It is entirely negative: It mourns Palestinian dispossession at the hands of the Jews rather than celebrating any idea of Palestinian nat ionalism. Nakba Day speaks volumes about Palestinian political psychology. There are also protests against Independence Day from within Israel, from Israeli Arabs—that is, Palestinians with Israeli citizenship—and leftist Israelis who want Israel to be a "state for all its citi-zens." This critique parallels the criticism of Israel's national anthem, "Hatikvah". The state, say the critics, celebrates the experience of the majority and further alienates the minority. But, to what extent do the symbols and rituals of Yom Ha'atzma'ut include and exclude? It is useful to look at other independence days and national anthems. Greece cele-brates March 25, the beginning of its War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire in 1821. It is also a Greek Orthodox holy day, the Annunciation of the Theotokos, on which the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would bear a child. Greece's anthem, "Hymn to Liberty," looks to this past for the nation's legitimacy. "From the graves of our slain," says Rudyard Kipling's 1918 translation, "shall thy valor prevail as we greet thee again: Hail, liberty, hail!" Independence and freedom mean independence and freedom for Orthodox Greeks. Hungary celebrates March 15 to recall the unsuccessful 1848 revolution against the Hapsburg Empire. The Hungar-ian national anthem, "Himnusz," begins, "God, bless the Magyar with Thy plenty and good cheer!" It goes on to recount the country's beauty and bounty and to give thanks for the Magyars' freedom from "the Turkish yoke we knew, which a free-born nation dreads." On September 16 Mexico celebrates its 1810 independ-ence from Spain. Its "Himno Nacional Mexicano" warns,

"Mexicans, at the cry of war, make ready the steel and bridle. . . . If some enemy outlander should dare to profane your ground with his step, know, beloved Fatherland, that Heaven has given you a soldier in every son." The Palestinian national anthem, "Fida'i," is even more blunt: "Palestine is my home, Palestine is my fire, Palestine is my vendetta and land of resistance." The objection that Yom Ha'atzma'ut and Hatikvah are insufficiently inclusive or representative of all citizens fails the comparative test. A nation-state frequently begins with one group that subsequently defines its culture and politics. Nearly every independence or national day depicts the spe-cific journey of a specific people, which is then musically celebrated—with usually martial and sometimes mixed results. It is the specificity of those experiences that gives most nations the core of their identity, which is then broad-ened by law, culture, and experience. There is a symmetry between the Israelis and the Ameri-cans. Both people's national anthems recognize that inde-pendence—indeed, survival—is fragile and conditional.

America's principles, the ideas of l iber ty and fundamental equality, are tested by challenges whose outcome is by no means certain. "Does that star-spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?" This is the question we Americans ask ourselves—unfortunately, without much knowing it—every time we sing our national song. In Hatikvah, the uncertainty is expressed as an ancient yearning: "Our

hope, the hope of two thousand years, will not be lost: to be a free people in our land, the land of Zion and Jerusalem." Neither will give up a hope. Indeed, this stubborn determination may account for the unique acrimony that both nations attract on their independence days and throughout the year. But there is a key difference. Americans are the quintes-sential modern, sprawling "invented people," who "brought forth on this continent a new nation." Israel is based on a peoplehood that is small and ancient. Protests against Yom Ha'atzma'ut ultimately reject this idea of peoplehood—not simply the idea that Jews deserve a state, but the idea that they exist at all as a people through time, with a spiritual center in Zion and Jerusalem. Greeks, Hungarians, and Mexicans are rarely called upon to give up their symbols and anthems in the name of inclu-sion; they do not face the eagerly-sought possibility of their disappearance as peoples. Jews are told to give up these symbols precisely so as to hasten such a disappearance. Hope requires symbols and ceremonies, and such hope is the ultimate target of the protests against Yom Ha'atzma'ut. To lose hope is to lose all.

To Know Us Is To Love Us!

Connecting with members of our congregation is not just the responsibility of your rabbi and cantor. You should get to know the stories behind those strangers’ faces, too. You might be pleasantly surprised to discover that only 46 years ago they were like you.

On Friday, April 13, 2012, you would have had the perfect opportunity to meet and greet some very important members of our congregation. For the first time in my memory, we devoted an Erev Shabbat Service to the founders of our synagogue. Some of whom are pictured below. These were Jews living in the Dallas community in the mid 1960’s who had the foresight, courage and yes chutzpah (nerve) to create a new congregation in Far North Dallas. They came two weeks ago to laugh and reminisce about the days when they were “young marrieds” some with infants or pregnant back then, just like some of you are now, who wanted to be part of a vibrant temple they could call home.

It was a time when the congregation was in such an infant stage that everyone pitched in to make the organization work. During the dinner after the service, they remembered how they had to cover up the crosses when they met at Northaven United Methodist Church; how every family brought sweets to the oneg, how everyone was included in simchas (joyous occasions) or minyans. If a couple didn’t show up for a service others were on the phone checking up on them to be sure they were alright.

Dan Krause, our official archivist, (he’s sitting way over on the left in the picture) told stories about what it was like back in the 60’s when all of these people got to know one another; that’s what made the congregation special and holy.

Now we are no longer a small congregation but that’s no reason not to know as many people, your fellow congregants in Temple Shalom, as you can. It is a fact that some people opt to resign from our friendly organization because they felt “left out” or “didn’t know anyone.” Our older members do make an effort to introduce themselves to strange faces, but it is a two-way street. Don’t be shy. Here’s an idea: Go into our new board room and see the pictures of our past presidents, many of whom are here on Friday nights. Seek one out. “I saw your picture in the board room. I’m Sam Shapiro and I’m new to Temple Shalom.” Join one of our auxiliary groups like Sisterhood, Brotherhood or Adult Choir, and introduce yourself. Come to an Adult Ed class during the week or on Sunday. Volunteer for a temple event; you don’t have to be the chair, but every committee needs help.

Remember: nobody bites here because-- to know us is to love us!

Hi- I’m Cantor Don Alan Croll. Nice to meet you! [email protected]

As the Religious School year comes to a close, I want to send a special thank you to our faculty – our teachers and our Ozrim. You have been so dedicated to the holy work of educating our next Jewish generation. Without your willingness to give of your time and your selves, our school would not have the energy, compassion and hope that infuses the walls with the sounds of laughter and joy every week. We thank you for your commitment to the future of the Jewish people. You are amazing people and I am blessed to be engaged with you in the Mitzvah work we do.

In addition, a special thank you to Karen Thompson, our Lifelong Learning Office Manager. She has worked at our congregation tirelessly for 35 years and her dedication to our community is profound. We are grateful for the work that she does with such pride and integrity.

As we approach the summer, many of our educational programs will go on hiatus. However, we will be offering a prayer book Hebrew class. This class is the next step to our basic Hebrew class. Knowledge of the Hebrew letters and vowels and their sounds would be a pre-requisite for the class. If you are interested in learning the meaning, intent and chanting of the prayers in our weekly Shabbat service, this is the class for you. Please see the ad on page six with further information.

I hope that you will join me in thanking our faculty and staff and I wish you all a wonderful summer of 2012.

Join a Havurah Today and Make Friends That Will Last a Lifetime.

Celebrate, Socialize, Learn Together The word Havurah is Hebrew for a group of friends.

Individual Havurot are small groups that have similar goals, with Judaism as the binding thread.

New groups are being formed at Temple and we would love to add you to the mix. Each group determines for themselves what their emphasis will be and how often they will meet. Whether it is social, study-oriented, or community service, the choice is up to you.

No matter what you choose, a Havurah is a great way to meet new temple members and form lasting friendships, which will ultimately add something to each of our Jewish lives.

As I sit here pondering these past two years, I have to smile. I have had the luxury of having an incredible executive board as well as a strong and highly involved board. My biggest challenge as president was to not get in the way of a group of men that know what to do and how to do it. We have continued putting on one successful project after another. And when it came time to ask for chairmen for the many committees, they were there at the ready.

I would like to take this space this month to thank the men that have kept me on track, moving the Temple Shalom Brotherhood on the successful path that it has been on in its recent past. First, thank you to Dennis Eichelbaum who has been my mentor as our immediate past president. He has taken on many positions including writing and publish-ing the new BRO monthly newsletter. Thank you to Scott Butnick, my 1st vice-president who has filled in whenever I have been unable to perform my Presidential duties and is more than ready to take the reins in June and I believe he will elevate the Brotherhood to a new level. Scott and 2nd Vice-President Perry Zidow have, together, been there to ensure that I kept my focus on maintaining the momentum that Brotherhood has reached and drive this organization to continued success in all its endeavors.

There are too many others to single out, but I must say that any man within the Temple Shalom family that has not been involved with your Brotherhood is missing out on enjoying the company and success of a great group of men.

Thank you all for this opportunity to serve you, the men of Temple Shalom Brotherhood.

All the best, Michael Kaplan President – Temple Shalom Brotherhood

Their facility is located 5 minutes from Temple at 13959 Peyton Drive. The Tikkun Olam Council will be focusing on the needs of two programs:
