Nobles and Ladies, thisyear is flying by. It’s difficult tobelieve we’re half way throughand preparing to “go dark” for

the summer, isn’t it? But going dark isn’t quite accurate, as thereare lots of activities planned in and around our Temple all summerlong, for those of us lucky enough to spend the summer in the Val-ley!

May 5th will find us at the Yavapai County Shrine Club’s AnnualGolf Tournament enjoying some cooler weather, we hope, while en-joying the company of our Brothers up North in the Prescott Val-ley area. That evening will be the Kentucky Derby Party atthe Temple, so Ladies, wear your finest Derby hats, as Iunderstand there’s a little competition taking place, mixedin with the mint juleps and horse races.

May 11th is the Salt Lake City Intermountain Unit’sOutreach Clinic held here in Phoenix. Lady Sandi andI love meeting our Shrine kids and we know you will, too. Come on down to visit, get acquainted and refreshand renew the reason we all joined the World’s Great-est Philanthropy.

May 9th-12th will find us in Reno, Nevada, for West-ern Shrine Association. This is a chance to renew oldfriendships and make new ones with the Temples located“out west.”

If you find you can’t attend WSA, please try to make theDaughter’s of the Nile Fashion Show & Luncheon May 12th. OurLadies organizations do so much to help the Temple and the Shrinekids and it thrills them when we visit their events.

May 13th we will once again host our Champagne Mother’s DayBrunch. It truly is a Feast of Love, Honor and Celebration! Bringyour mother, your wife, your children – shoot, bring your neighborstoo!

Our 15th Annual Shriners Golf Tournament will be held May18th and the famous Bash After the Clash will be May 19th. Lotsof folks work really hard to provide quality golfing experiences, not to mention the Bash After has grown into a much-anticipatedyearly event! This will be our 2nd Annual Shriner’s CountryCasino Night featuring Texas Hold ‘Em with all proceeds benefit-ting the El Zaribah General Fund, so go “all in” and join the fun.

June 16th is the Prescott Valley Parade so enjoy some of thecool pines and great camaraderie. Stick around after the Parade,as the Yavapai County Shrine Club’s serving up a big lunch withhot dogs, hamburgers & all the trimmings for Shriners and their

families. Father’s Day, June 17th, will find us enjoying an IceCream Social at the Temple while the end of the month

we journey to Charlotte, NC for the Imperial Session. Another Salt Lake City Outreach Clinic will be held

July 6th, then there’s Temple Guard’s Munds ParkWeekend July 27th-29th. The Mounted Patrol willalso hold a Ride that weekend, so you know it’sbound to be a fun time.

August 3rd finds us having a Los Angeles Out-reach Clinic here. Zane Grey Shrine Club’s GolfTournament will be August 17th, followed on the

18th by the Payson Parade and OV. We finish outAugust with our 21st Annual CornFest and Arts &

Crafts Show in the auditorium. “Going dark” for the summer??? NAH – there’s a lot

going on you won’t want to miss! Yours in the Faith, /h

Greetings from the bucket closet. Once again I have the distinct pleasureto let you know our buckets of restricted accounts are doing good. Come tothe Stated Meeting to hear the actual amounts of each. Of course, we allhave to keep working to replenish the working accounts, as they continue topay out to service the needs of the building and the kids, but then that’s whatgives us Shriners and Ladies purpose and meaning.

Try to get down and get involved and check out the good year Sir Hut is

having thus far. Of course, we all know it’s mainly his lovely Lady Sandi whodeserves credit for all that’s going good, but Sir Hut constantly is around, anddoing a great job as leader of the pack.

The Divan has a full slate of upcoming events and are working hard to en-tertain you all in good old Shriner tradition. Come on down and enjoy someof it. Hope to see you at one or all of the functions. Until then, take good careof you and yours. The Bucket Man

Nobles and Ladies, there still seems tobe some confusion among some of ourUnits and Clubs regarding CharitableFund Raising. Here’s how it works:1) Unit or Club submits request to the

Recorder to sponsor a Charitable Fund-Raiser.2) Recorder sends that request to Imperial for approval. Imperialsends their approval to the Recorder.3) Recorder receives Charitable Fund-Raiser request approval fromImperial.4) Recorder sends Shrine Charity Activity Form to the Unit or Club.

Recorder’s Message...

5) Unit or Club completes the form within 60 days after the event.6) Unit or Club sends completed form, along with a check from theevent, to the Recorder.7) Unit or Club must designate on the check if the event proceedsgo directly to Shrine Hospitals or to the El Zaribah TransportationFund for Children.8) Recorder sends check for the Shrine Hospitals to Imperial.9) Checks for the El Zaribah Transportation Fund for Children:Recorder submits request to Imperial to retain the proceeds for theEl Zaribah Transportation Fund for Children. shrine Clubs & units Meeting Nights... August 1st

Is Your Due Date

for the September

Issue of the

Arabian Tales

Although we call June, July and August “dark” here at the Shrine Temple,we’re still certainly very active. Check out the calendar of events at this issue’sinside back cover. Everyone puts forth a lot of effort and does a wonderful jobputting this section together keeping all of us informed. As you can see, there’s a lot going on.

Congratulations to the new Nobles Installed at the Spring Ceremonial. Youmay have had more fun becoming a member of Shriners International thanothers have had in the past several years.

As you browse through this magazine, you’ll see articles from various Unitsand Clubs that may hold some interest for you. You’re most welcome to in-vestigate becoming a member of any Unit or Club. Don’t hesitate to ask anyquestions or offer suggestions.

We look forward to seeing you and working with you around the Templeto fulfill our mission of helping the Shrine Children. Fred Wulff, Editor

It’s May and it’s hard to believe the year is almost half way complete. The Temple will soon be going dark, but thatdoesn’t mean the Clown’s work is on hold.

Firstly, WSA in Reno should be a fun timefor those Clowns attending. There are alsosummer Parades on June 16th in PrescottValley and August 18th in Payson, so look forus and our world famous Parade props. I’m

sure Soggy will be sweeping your mess under his rug or Chick Pea willbe framed once again.

Let’s also remember to make a showing at the Clinics on May 11th,July 6th and August 3rd. So, if you’re a Clown who doesn’t have a jobschedule on these Fridays, please think about going down to the Clinicto put a smile on the faces of our children.

As always, George “Z” Mather will be holding a Clown training sessionon Tuesday evenings so if you need help on a skit, grease, Parade props,or any other Clown category, please contact him and make the neededarrangements. If you’re a new Clown and need help getting started, aprospective Clown who’s curious, or a well-seasoned Clown looking fornew ideas, then this is the perfect chance to get together and work onperfecting our Clowning skills.

Having fun making the world Smile, a proud El Zaribah Clown

band...

El Zaribah is one of the few Temples that still have a Band Unit. OurBand was chartered at the same time and date El Zaribah was chartered- June 24, 1896.

We need the continued support of ourDivan. We’re very pleased our Den MotherChris Hagenian (High Priest and Prophet)has been a frequent visitor and has offeredsuggestions to help us. Mel owes a hugeapology to Phil Houghton, PP for not recog-nizing him when he came by the Band during the Pre-Stated Meeting pro-gram we presented in March. We’re working hard to win back ouraudience (Ladies included) for our 6:30 - 7:00 performances. New musicreflecting the season, Units/Clubs activities, holidays, etc. will be fea-tured each month.

The Band Unit will be dark from the end of the May 16th Stated Meet-ing until the Sept. 6th rehearsal for the September Stated Meeting. Achange in the Circus schedule may change our September dates. MEL

Culinary...

Greetings from your friendly servers behind the chow line. Thanks toour dedicated volunteers and the leadership of our past President Mike

Fenno, this year’s CIF Barbeque was suc-cessfully handled. The next big project for theCulinary Unit will be the CornFest, which willrequire a full crew to handle the serving.Check the El Zaribah web site and youremails for details and updates. The CornFestwill be August 25th & 26th, so keep those

dates open. The Spring Ceremonial was April 28th, and that reminded us of the im-

portant role our new Nobles will play in the future of our Temple. Although we’ll be dark during the summer months, there will still be op-

portunities to acquaint our friends, especially those who are already Mas-ter Masons, with the benefits and rewards we enjoy through ourfraternity and our connection with the Shriners Hospitals. There are alsoways to help others decide to inquire about membership. Let’s see if wecan have a large group of Candidates for the next Ceremonial, and hope-fully attract some new Culinary members.

The Culinary Unit meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month to discussitems of great importance, so please try to be there if you can. We’re al-ways looking for new members and we can use your help.

Say Happy Birthday to Al Bielsky, Harmon Cadis and Ron Dunlap thismonth. I’ll see you soon. Ralph Jones, Sec.

Ok, OK, Oh-Kay! Not all of our Drill Team Members are grey hairedold fat guys. We got a skinny guy, we got a seriously hair-challenged guy,we even got a ponytail guy. One of the thingswe all got in common is we love our HarleyDavidson motorcycles. Each of our activemembers have one. We also got social mem-bers that ride bikes of a different flavor - dis-tant cousins of the motorcycles that gowing-ding-ding… Or is it ringa-ding-wing-wing? Whatever, rice burners. They got two wheels so they can’t be allbad. Beyond the desire to feel the wind on your face and bugs in yourteeth, we’re dedicated to raise coin for the Shriners Children’s Hospitals.

Our Annual spring funds-raisers, Bowling Palooza and MotorcycleSwap Meet, are over. When the smoke clears we’ll find out how we didmonetarily. We had serious help from others helping our Unit.

In another week I’ll be able to hitch my belt back to where it was be-fore Mick and Janelle’s Cook Off. No doubt we had a good time. Our Min-nesota faction has started to look longingly to the northeast. They’ll beheading out to discover if their neighbors Sven and Ollie have thawedyet.

Our ranks may have thinned a bit, however we’re still hard-core rid-ers. There are mornings and evenings that are perfect for rides.

The Unit meeting is the 2nd Thursday at the Temple. Until the gavelfalls (actually a sap) at 7 pm, you can find us in the Red Fez Room par-taking of refreshment. Yawl come, hear?Little Jim Drill Team Member

Legion of honor...

With a great amount of pride, the Greeters wish to take this opportu-nity to bring to your attention an honor recently received by a memberfrom within our ranks. Potentate Hut Hutson honored Greeter Pres. ChuckRichards, during April’s Stated Meeting, as being El Zaribah’s “Shriner ofthe Month.” Of course, we Greeters have always considered Chuck to bethe person one envisions when attempting to describe an outstandingShriner Mason, so it didn’t really come asa big shock to us but congratulations justthe same, Chuck. Way to go!!! We’re re-ally proud of you.

I’m sure that over the years you’ve allheard of lucky individuals winning fascinating, relatively inexpensive‘dream vacations’, right? And about how much fun the winners of raffleshave enjoyed the likes of Cancun, Mexico or Las Vegas or an oceancruise. I can’t elaborate much further in the Arabian Tales. However, wecan utilize this space as a way to get your attention and make you awareof a Greeters Unit fund-raising activity that will provide you with opportu-nities to win what has been described as “a vacation of a lifetime.”

Keep a close watch during the next few months while at various Shrineinvolved activities and functions for Greeters information. Who knows, perhaps on Dec. 7th your ticket may be drawn and you, too, could be-come the winner of a “dream vacation.”

We’re proud to welcome Gary Lionberger into our ranks as our newestGreeter. Gary, a member of our most recent Ceremonial, is employed asa Regional Manager with Western Stucco. He and his lovely Lady Nancymake their home in Glendale.

And last but not least, the Greeters are still searching for some kindsoul with one powerful pickup truck. On occasions we need to tow ourtrailered Greeter mobile to outlying areas for Parades. I might add, notwithout remuneration and a lot of appreciation. If you might be in a situa-tion to help out, please give Chuck Richards (480-998-3227) a call.Until next time.

Howdy Ya’ll, hope this finds you and yours doing well and enjoying life.As our year progresses, our capable Capt. Paul Sourbread and his “in-teresting“ line of Officers has us booked with a busycalendar, which is very good for us all. Our friendlyget-together and Unit Ride in Munds Park will beJuly 20th-22nd. If you can’t make anything else, make that one. Also very important date to remem-ber is the Fall Ride of October 4th-7th. Please tryto make that one and bring a friend or two.

Along with those, to help fill the calendar we’rescheduled for a few Parades. We have PrescottRodeo Parade June 30th, Payson Aug. 18th, Anthem on Nov. 10th andthe Fiesta Bowl Parade and shindig Dec. 31st. Make whichever ones youcan, hopefully all of them, ‘cause it’s the fellowship and chance to seeeach other that makes the Unit great.

Early reports show the Spring Ride to be successful and phun. Ourthanks again to Scott for the use of the beautiful EZ Ranch and facilities.Speaking of whom, congratulations are in order for Scott as he recentlytied the matrimonial knot, as did our Unit mascot Chuck Lufkin. Congrat-ulations boys, and let’s all hope the new brides have the patience of asaint and the understanding of a therapist. Just kidding of course… bestwishes now and forever.

Along with the busy schedule we have in the Unit, hopefully you hada chance enjoy some of the functions at the Shrine Temple. Hut’s CigarNight was a big hit and a fun evening even if you don’t smoke. Also, theBig Nite was a fun event. Check the Arabian Tales for upcoming funthings.

Thanks again to Capt. Sauerkraut and his handy crew of Officers forleading us down the right path. Take care and Vaya Con Dios

Please make a note to doPrescott Valley and Payson and rememberthe Circus, along with helping ticket sales.

Just a word to all, we’ve been real strongat our Parades and I know our Pote appreciates our attendance. Let’skeep up the good work and enjoy our fun and friendship.

We all need to work on our membership for the remaining part of theyear, not only daily but we have another Ceremonial coming up later, sowe have another good chance to expand our Unit.

Please start thinking about our fund-raiser since we have none. For ashort idea, let’s see if we can’t join another Unit, help them and split theprofits. We need everyone to make an effort to do their best.

Thinking about our attendance, not only at the meetings but at Pa-rades, we’ve done a good job all participating, but I know there are mem-bers who have cars who think they’re in a museum so they don’t showthem, along with themselves. Come on, we’re a strong Unit with greatleadership and brotherhood, so get off the couch, into your car and makean effort to join in please. John

LOS Director’s Staff. Congratulations, Lou Ann! On a separate note, those in attendance at our St. Pat’s Party agreed

the corned beef was some of the finest they’d ever eaten. There’s a say-ing among locals in Hawaii when complimenting the cook on a great mealthat goes, “It tasted so good, it broke the mouth.” Fernando, you broke alot of mouths that night. Thank you.

The Patrol wishes all Nobles and their Ladies a safe and happy sum-mer vacation, and for you snowbirds, drive safely and we’ll see you in thefall. Father Floyd

Computer...

The Officers and Members of the Club invite all members of El Zaribahand their Ladies interested in computing to attend our Club meetings.Ladies as well as their Noble attend and par-ticipate.

The Club meets the 4th Monday of eachmonth at 7:00 pm except June, July, and Au-gust and when there’s a conflict with Christ-mas. The Red Fez Room is where many ofus meet for dinner prior to the meeting.

Experience the camaraderie of others interested in computers. Wehave several “Lab” computers you can practice on.

A lot of good information is presented at each of our meetings. Don’tbe shy about bringing your problems for us to study. Dumb questions don’texist, as the answer to a question you might think dumb is what one ormore members wanted to ask but were shy or perhaps had a problem ex-pressing it. Sometimes the answer to your question brings questions in re-lated areas from other members. In other words, please bring questionsabout computers and related software.

We spend little time with administrative action and most talking or work-ing with computers. If you have a computer problem that requires bring-ing in your computer, don’t hesitate to do that.

Plan to attend one of our meetings and bring software or hardwareproblems, or your expertise, which is always welcomed. Bring to the meet-ing misbehaving computers for our GURUS to evaluate and/or work on.Virgil Johnston, Club Sec.

Mobile Nobles...

Wow! Where has the winter gone? Seems like our Nobles from theNorth just got here and now they’re planning their journey back home. Our Sunday Brunch held March 11th was a huge success, as we had over50 Nobles and their Ladies in attendance. Thanks to Noble Ron Walker,

our activity director, for planning the event. Our regular March 15th meeting was well

attended and was special, as Club OfficersNobles Tom Rickard and Ill. Bill Mc Keigan,PP served snacks and drinks. The snackswere very tasty and Nobles Tom and Bill dida great job as servers. Our March meetingwas the last meeting we’ll have until Oct. as

we go dark until then. At the March Stated Meeting, Mobile Noble Pres. John LeClair pre-

sented 2 checks to the Potentate, Ill. Hut Hutson, one for the Temple Sur-veillance fund and one to the Shriners Childrens Hospital in Salt Lake.

The Nobles who work the aluminum can project have been really busyas this is the time of year when we collect the highest volume of cans. Asa way of thanking these Nobles for the great job they do, the Club votedto treat the Nobles and their Ladies to a dinner at the Pier de’ Orleanscafé in downtown Mesa.

Have a great summer and we’ll be looking forward to your return in thefall.

The Drum & Bugle Corps would like to congratulate and welcomethose new Nobles created at the Spring Ceremonial April 28th. We sin-cerely hope you enjoyed your day. You may have seenthe Drum & Bugle Corps play a couple numbers foreveryone if we were able to take a few minutes off fromour other responsibilities during the day. The Drum &Bugle Corps has members that are all quite active inother Units and Committees, so this makes it a challengeto get everyone together during the day to play our in-struments.

We enjoyed performing for the CIF BBQ on April 15th.There’s always a great crowd in the Auditorium to listento us, and that makes it so enjoyable.

The Drum & Bugle Corps will probably take a month or two off frompractice during the summer, but we’ll be back again practicing in Augustfor the CornFest. We have around 15 members active in our practicesand performances. During the summer months we lose a few who spendtheir time in cooler places.

If you’ve been thinking about coming by and trying out an instrumentwith us, there’s no better time. You DO NOT have to be an expert musi-cian to join us. Over half of our membership had never picked up an in-strument before they came down and joined us. Sure, it helps if you’veplayed an instrument way back in High School. But no matter how muchexperience you have, if you’re interested in joining us for the summer,we guarantee you’ll be up to speed and performing with us in the Fall.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer. Alto Bugle

Illustrious Sir Hut at the CIF BBQ

• Authenticity

Authenticity is a word often used and poorly under-stood. We see things like “Authentic Replica” on items ofart or “Authentically Homemade Soup” labels on cans ofsoup when they clearly came from a soup refinery. Areplica of a piece of art is just that, a replica and it’s not au-thentic, it lacks the original energy and creative spirit ofthe artist. As for Authentically Homemade Soup in a can- as I remember, my mom’s soup was good and was madewith love for the family. However, I do admit some of thesoup in a can tastes a lot better than mom’s. That differ-ence is an authentic difference, and I’m sure mom justmight agree.

The best example I can use for a quick lesson on the dif-ference between truth and authenticity is a famous scenefrom one of the Pink Panther movies. Intrepid InspectorClouseau was checking into a hotel in the Alps. The deskclerk was an irritatingly slow, partially deaf, elderly man. After Clouseau had checked in, he started towards hisroom and encountered a small dog. Smiling as he lookeddown at the dog, he asked the desk clerk, “Does your dogbite?” The clerk glanced up at Clouseau and down at thedog. The clerk shook his head from side to side and said“No.” Clouseau proceeded to bend over and pet the dogwhich promptly bit Clouseau. Recoiling his hand andrubbing it in pain, he angrily yelled at the desk clerk, “Ithought you said your dog doesn’t bite?” The desk clerklooked at Clouseau, down at the dog and quietly said,“That’s not my dog!”

The desk clerk answered honestly and correctly. Whathe saw was Clouseau about to pet a dog. Clouseau madean incorrect assumption that the dog at his feet, the one he

wished to pet, belonged to the desk clerk. So he asked thedesk clerk if the dog, the one he assumed belonged to thedesk clerk, bit. The desk clerk, ignoring Clouseau’s obvi-ous intentions to pet the dog at his feet, answered thequestion correctly and ignored Clouseau’s intention.

An example of what could be an authentic answerwould be “No, my dog doesn’t bite, but if you intend topet the one at your feet, that dog does bite.”

Authenticity is not only more than truth; it’s harderthan truth. For one must not only answer truthfully butalso make an inquiry as to the inquisitor’s intentions inasking the initial question and try to answer, not justtruthfully, but authentically.

Please understand I’m not saying I bite – I’m not say-ing I don’t bite. I’m saying we need to think carefully be-fore we ask or answer a question. We need to make surethe target of our question understands the intent of ourquestion. We must also work to understand the nature ofan inquiry from our inquisitors.

No price is too high. No, price is too high. What a different just in writing a comma can make,

and our language is even more imprecise than our writ-ing. This is why we must work at authenticity in all ourconversations, in all our writings and in all our deeds.

My intention is to continue to be as authentic as possi-ble as a Mason, a Shriner and as your Potentate, not onlywith the Divan, but with all Nobles in all matters. Au-thenticity also requires me to let you know I may not liveup to this high goal. So if I come up short - be gentle andplease just drop by or write me a letter or an email, etc…and I will do my authentic best to address the issue.

As to the question “Do I bite?” If I’ve messed up andyou’re coming by to show me where - bring a treat.

Nobles, our next Outreach Clinic will be held May 11th and it would benice to have a great showing for our patients. The Outreach Clinics are agreat opportunity for our Shriners and their Ladies to get to meet some ofour remarkable patients and help brighten up their days. Having a nicegroup of Shriners and Ladies always adds to the festive environment andis very rewarding for all who can make it. You’re always welcome if youcan come on down and share some time. The Outreach Clinics are heldat the Maricopa County Medical Center at 24th St. and Roosevelt. We’rein the most western building on the 3rd floor, just look for the guys in thefezzes.

Our recent Clinics have been enhanced by everyone’s great partici-pation. Not only are our regular volunteers always there with smiles ontheir faces, but we’ve also had great participation by the Ladies Organi-zations. Both the Daughters of the Nile and the Ladies Oriental Shrinehave been participating in force. Lady Betty Gough from the Nile has beenthere with quilts, knitted hats and toys for the kids and the LOS Clownshave been doing their thing. Lady Mary Stanfield made her Clinic debutrecently and was a huge hit with the kids.

Volunteering some time in helping our Shriner kids is always a very re-warding experience. We hope to see you there. Jim Miller, PP, Hospital Chairman

CHUCK RICHARDSBorn in Kodiak, Alaska in 1941,

Chuck was the son of a US Navy ship-yard employee. Just a few shortmonths after his birth, Chuck and hismother were separated from his fatherbecause of the declaration of war andfear of an attack. With San Diego theirdestination, they were placed on boarda ship and while en route their ship wasunsuccessfully attacked. Fortunately, all made it through without injury.

After the war, his family moved to Kalispell, MT where Chuck’s Dad andan Uncle opened Richards Sheet Metal Shop. Chuck’s father, who loved fly-ing, owned 4 airplanes and Chuck’s grade school and high school years weredivided between his love for flying and his love of music. He became such anaccomplished sax player he participated in several national musical events in-cluding the Rose Bowl Parade.

Chuck’s college was interrupted when he enlisted in the USAF. His previ-ous years of flying proved him worthy and the military placed him in aviationtraining. While stationed in France during the wake of the Berlin crisis, Chuckfound himself in the same circles as other aviators such as Gary Francis Pow-ers, well known for his many high altitude reconnaissance missions.

shriner of the Month...Following his discharge, Chuck returned to his studies and graduated from

MT State University with a Masters Degree in Architecture. About this timeChuck was raised to the Degree of Master Mason in Bozeman, but with apromise of a more lucrative career in Spokane, he relocated there and openedhis business. His affiliation with friends and members of his local Blue Lodgesoon found him being drawn toward activities at El Katif Shrine and in 1975he walked the “Hot Sands.” Not satisfied with just being a Noble, he yearnedfor further involvement and it was soon thereafter he became a member of theGreeters Unit.

The economic downturn of the early ‘80s caused Chuck to rethink his busi-ness location. Phoenix appeared to show promise, so without much hesita-tion, the Richards family made the move. Chuck was soon employed as anArchitect and, just as soon, became a Noble at El Zaribah and, of course, aGreeter.

In 1985, Chuck incorporated his own firm, T.M. Professionals. However, his list of credits and accomplishments goes back to long before his move toAZ. His name’s attached to the likes of the redesign and remodeling for theSpokane Worlds Fair and the Kellogg, ID corporate office completions for theSunshine Mining Company, which was, and still is, considered a notable de-sign in the field of Architecture.

His AZ architecture accomplishments include several restaurants, schoolsand his involvements in the design of the Federal Correctional Institutions inTucson and Phoenix.

Chuck and his lovely wife Paula reside in Scottsdale.
