The month of May brings to mindtwo important occasions. One

is Mother’s Day and the other isMemorial Day.

In Atlanta, Georgia, there is astatue of one of the south’s promi-nent journalists, Henry W. Grady.Behind the statue is the story ofhow he, in older years, assumedthe burden of many public respon-sibilities. One day he left his officewithout a word to anyone. FromThursday to Monday, nobody knewwhere he had gone. When Mondaycame, he returned with a smile onhis face. Later it became knownthat he had slipped off to return tohis homeland. He needed some-thing that was missing. Upon see-ing his mother after such a longabsence, he told her, “Your boy hasbeen too much out in the world andhas been losing his ideals and hascome back to be re-nourished.” Hismother put her arms around him.Without a rebuke or complaint, herhand touched his wounds to heal

his weariness. Motherhood iswhere our roots are.

On Memorial Day, we shallthink and pay tribute to those val-iant men and women who havedied in all our wars. Each of us inour own way will try to expresssorrow and gratitude. It is beyondthe power of oratory to do justice tothe task. Only one man has evercome close to voicing what we feel.Abraham Lincoln said it, “Thebrave ones who struggled here haveconsecrated (what we feel) farabove our poor power to add ourdetractions. It is for us to be herededicated to the great task remain-ing before us - that we here highlyresolve that these dead shall nothave died in vain - that this na-tion, under God, shall have a newbirth of freedom.”

So, we who wear the Square andthe Compass will always be awareof that freedom so zealouslyguarded that our posterity may en-joy its benefits as much as we do.

At this time of year, I’m particu-larly aware of the awesome

units Sahib has, just got done tak-ing photos (mostly of Sahib ShrineClowns over at the Sahib ShrineCircus - see front page.) Every yearthe members of our units do somuch—parades, circus, the TampaShriners Hospital for Children, theChildren’s Christmas Party, Hos-pital Days, Imperial Potentate Of-ficial Visit and lots more. I’m notreferring to just a unit performingsome duty for Sahib, I’m referringto a unit doing what it was createdto do, like the Band, Banjo Band,Clowns, Legion of Honor, Model Ts,Oriental Band and Pipes & Drums. These nobles take their specialtiesin front of the public and representwho we are to many of our citizens.Somehow we just don’t seem to

give them credit for the great thingsthey do to make Sahib what it is.Then there are the service units, the Temple and Provost Guards,Greeters, the Golf Cart Herdersand the King Pins. That’s not tosay the performing and serviceunits are the only ones workingaround here, but they do everyweek the things that make SahibShriners who we are in front ofoutsiders.

Unfortunately, a lot of whatmany of them do, is not known toour nobility, as there is no public-ity for what they do. Only abouthalf of them submit a regular col-umn here in the Reporter, sure wishall of them will tell us just whatthey did for us last month. Pleasehelp us tell everyone about thegreat things you are doing!

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

April was a busy month. May is going to be the same. This month’s majoractivity is the Florida Shrine Association meeting in Fort Myers, Florida. Many of our units will be competing and we need to support their activi-ties.

Ken Pedersen, Past Commodore of our Mariners unit, will be installed asthe Commodore of the Florida Shrine Mariners and Yacht Club Associa-tion. Congratulations, Noble Pedersen.

I am sure there are other nobles from Sahib assuming leadership posi-tions in the various Associations of the Florida Shrine Association. Sup-port them in their various roles.

Our Sahib Shrine Circus was very successful and I want to thank every-one for his or her support and participation. Circus Chairman Ken Ship-ley and Noble Bob Trudel and Lady Pam worked very hard to make this asuccessful Circus year. There were others on the team who contributedgreatly. They will be noted in another article. Thanks to all the CircusDad and Circus Mom supporters. Your contributions helped send manychildren to the Circus.

Our Ceremonial was very successful. We will have another CeremonialNovember 30 and December 1. Now is the time to start working on ob-taining petitions from Master Masons to become Sahib Shriners.

This month is the Grand Communication of the Grand Lodge of Florida. It is anticipated that a new lodge formed by one of our Shrine clubs willreceive their charter. Congratulations to all who have labored in thevineyards of Freemasonry.

Yours in the Faith,

Charles M. Levan, 33°, Potentate

Chief Rabban’s notesby Bill Zurlo, [email protected]

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Rocky Kearney, [email protected]

I trust all of you nobles enjoyed the Easter season.Spring is here and your Divan is busy at work

making sure that all the activities at Sahib are per-formed in a business like manner.

Potentate Illustrious Sir Charles Levan 33° had avery enjoyable and successful cruise. This cruise is avery rewarding experience for the Potentate. It en-ables him to relax, and rub elbows with those thathave joined him.

As we approach the slow months ahead, rememberthe importance of supporting your restaurant andlounge. We have new menus and musicians in thelounge. The menus will have many more items to pickfrom, all at reasonable prices. Come and see foryourself.

The Florida Shrine Association Convention willbe held in Fort Myers on May 2 through 5. Sahib’sModel T’s and Clowns will be competing for sure andwill win as in the past. We wish them the best.

Membership is coming alive. High Priest andProphet Connie Jacobi and I have been calling

lists of Master Masons and have been able to landmany candidates. In addition, our Past Masters unithas been hard at work with Frank Albinson, PM,PDDGM submitting a candidate, Phoenix Lodge Sec-retary Deryl Smith submitting two candidates andHerb Mueller submitting another. We are currentlyat 11 candidates with the possibility of several moresoon.

In addition to these perspective new nobles, theRestoration Team headed by Dale LaBell, PP hasreturned 11 members who had not paid their dues toour current roster. Ill. Sir Dale expects additionalresults to follow. I recently heard from Dick Menzakthat he and his team have reduced the list of nobleswith outstanding dues owed to 174.

We have some very encouraging news from all ofour Membership Teams. Oriental Guide Carroll Scrib-ner, High Priest and Prophet Connie Jacobi, Re-corder Oscar Cloutier and I will be visiting our Blue

Lodges starting in May. Letters have been distrib-uted to all of these Lodges in our jurisdiction and thusfar, we have received permission to visit four Lodgesand present our short Membership DVD and pro-gram.

In addition to Membership, Noble Jacobi and Imet with several members of the Venice Shrine Clubon Tuesday, March 27 for a visit with three Publixmanagers, Team Captains for Hospital CollectionDays, Hospital Chairman Jesus Cabalo and a hospi-tal child and her mother. Co-Chairs for Hospital DaysTim Kinchla and Bill Long took the lead at thisbreakfast. This affair was set up to thank Publix andspecifically individual store managers for their par-ticipation in our Hospital Collection Days. The entireaffair was paid for by the Venice Shrine Club. Plaqueswere distributed to each individual manager fromVenice S.C. and Sahib Shrine.

That’s all for now but it would be nice if morenobles would feel obligated to participate in Member-ship development.

Another month has been ripped off the wall calen-dar. My God where is the time going? And of

course, I’m late getting my article in to Gary, oureditor. It will be quite a change as things are slowingdown with the departure of our northern visitors. Idon’t know if it’s me; but I can’t remember seeing somany accidents around town. Are our northern visi-tors in that much of a hurry to get back up north? Thispast week I drove by three accidents where the peopleinvolved were airlifted out. Please be careful!

April was sure a great month, with the SahibShrine Circus right across the street and our SpringCeremonial. With all the circuses in the Sarasota

area, the members of Sahib do a great job puttingpeople in the seats. From the gals sitting in the ticketbooth with 90° temperatures to our world famousClowns, everyone worked very hard. I unfortunatelymissed the Circus as I was representing our Poten-tate at the Morocco’s Potentate’s Ball. I really wasglad, as I have been friends with Ill. Sir Luke Bakerfor many years. Shrinedom has truly been wonderfulfor me, as I truly have met many great people throughthe Shrine. That is the one thing I like to tell our newcandidates. Well I guess I’ll keep it short this monthso, keep supporting our Shrine and let’s not forgetyour Blue Lodge.

Change is inevitable, Growth is optional!

More than a dozen Motor Corps members andseveral Widows Sons members made their an-

nual trek to Murphy, North Carolina in April fromthe 19th to the 21st. Murphy is a great location formotorcycle riding and our guys had a great time thisyear as they have every year. Many of our membersstayed at Rivers Edge Mountain RV Resort, owned byone of our former members, Gary Nickols. Ask any of theguys who traveled north to tell you about their experi-ence. See <www.riversedgemountainrvresort.com> ifyou want to get an idea of the scenery the ridersexperienced.

Several of our members have been attending GulfGate Bike night on the first Tuesday of each month. The business establishments supporting this eventhave been donating a portion of the proceeds to helpkids with cancer.

Come early and stay late to help, so thenmany hands will make light work!

A good crowd of nobles, ladies and guests turnedout for our April Mixer at the Olde World Restaurant. And our “Deep Fried Turkey” picnic at Dallas WhitePark was well attended! Twenty nine of our noblesand ladies worked 314 hours (22% of total Sahib time)to sell and collect tickets, plus staff the Shrine boothat the Sarasota County Fair. Plus, nine of our clubmembers participated in the March Arcadia Paradeand enjoyed the after-glow at Noble Joe Smedley’shome there.

Each Tuesday 7:30 a.m., rain or shine, 52 weeks ofthe year, our nobles, ladies and friends breakfast inseparate rooms at the Olde World Restaurant forinformation, fun and fellowship. Nobles Don White, JoeHarrington, and Dave Moote are recovering fromrecent outpatient treatments, and Lady Mary Janereports that Noble “Doc” Schaeferle is doing better athome in Iowa. Please keep these folks and theirfamilies in your prayers.

In our latest ‘Quotable Notable’ contest, no readeridentified notable conservative columnist Dave Brookswho wrote urging a national service program - “It’swrong to describe an America in which the salt of theearth common people are preyed upon by this or thatnefarious elite. We need a program that would forcemembers of the upper tribe and the lower tribe to livetogether, if only for a few years.”

So here’s our May ‘Quotable Notable’ quiz - Whatnotable historian recently observed, “Let us reviewthe various American policy options for the MiddleEast over the last few decades. Military assistance orpunitive intervention without follow-up mostly failed. The verdict on far more costly nation building is stillout. Trying to help popular insurgents topple un-popular dictators does not guarantee anything bet-ter. Propping up dictators with military aid is bothodious and counterproductive. What have we learned?Tribalism, oil, and Islamic fundamentalism are a badmix that leaves Americans sick and tired of theMiddle East – both when they get in it and when theytry to stay out of it.”

The first non-club member to email this notable’sidentity to the scribe at the above email address orphone to (941) 429-6882 wins a free Tuesday morningbreakfast for two with the North Port Shrine Club.

Sports can be an incredibly strong motivator – even for those coping with difficult orthopaedic conditions. For an elite few – including patients and former patients of Shriners Hospitals for Children® – that drive and ambition will earn them a spot at the Paralympics. The Paralympics is a worldwide competition that is the equivalent of the Olympics for athletes with physical disabilities, and is held immediately following the traditional Olympics. Here are a few of our track stars:

Jerome SingletonJerome Singleton, 25, of Irmo, S.C., was born without a right fibula. Throughout his childhood, he received expert care at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville, including a below-the-knee amputation and his prosthetics. Jerome ran track in high school and college, and in 2007 he began competing on the U.S. Paralympic track and field team. In 2011, he won the men’s 100-meter event at the IPC Athletics World Championships in New Zealand and earned the title “Fastest Amputee in the World.”

Despite his success and busy schedule, Jerome takes time to visit the place that gave him an opportunity to thrive at a sport he loves.

“This is where it all started for me, right here in this hospital,” said Jerome. “I know what Shriners Hospitals does for the kids. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for this hospital.”

Ryan FannWhen Ryan Fann of Nashville, Tenn., was 3 years old he was struck by a car while playing in front of his family’s home and had to have his left foot amputated. Growing up, Ryan struggled with prosthetics that broke frequently, particularly when he played sports like football. When he was 13, Ryan’s father learned of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Lexington and made an appointment. The hospital provided Ryan with three properly fitted and appropriate prosthetic legs – one for walking and two for sports. “I couldn’t believe right away they gave me three legs to use,” said Ryan. “It just shows you how Shriners Hospitals have absolutely zero limitations for their patients.”

With his new and more durable prosthetic legs, Ryan’s football game improved; he was selected for the Tennessee East-West Shrine Bowl Game his senior year. After high school, Ryan began to run track at Tennessee State University and also for the Paralympics, where he was a teammate of Jerome’s. Ryan retired from competing in track in 2008. Now 28, he works as a prosthetist and has become a role model for other young amputee athletes.

Alan SanchezAlan Sanchez of Monterrey, Mexico, was 5 years old when a stack of bricks fell on his left leg while he was playing at a construction site near his home. He was taken to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston and underwent an above-the knee amputation. After the surgery Alan received top-notch treatment and prosthetic devices from the pediatric orthopaedic hospital.

Now 17, Alan has developed a love for running and won several gold medals for his high school’s track team. His next goal is to follow in the footsteps of Jerome and Ryan and train for the Paralympics.

“I owe a lot to my teammates and my coach for all of their support,” said Alan. “I’m also thankful for all the treatment and help at Shriners Hospitals.”

Shriners Hospitals for Children applauds these successful athletes and looks forward to helping more patients become active and achieve their goals in life – and in sports.

Well fellow Shriners and Dolls, another winterhas come and gone, and what a beautiful one it

was. March was such a busy month. We entertainedthe folks at Pleasant Lakes Mobile Home Park thenseveral of us were at a spring fling at J. P. MillerElementary School in Bradenton. We were also presentat the Arcadia Rodeo. Many of us, as well as manyfrom other units, helped in a variety of ways at therecent county fair. As a warm-up to the Shriner’sCircus, we preformed at the last Thursday luncheonin March. It was a hoot!

Then came the Circus itself; three shows on Fri-day, two on Saturday, then two on Sunday. Boy, werewe pooped after that.

Reminder that we meet at the Shrine every Mon-day evening, drop in!

Time to say “au revoir” to all our “snowbirds,” thatis including me. We will see y’all in the fall.

Remember to take it safe, think before action, andour best to all the wonderful children we have and arehelping. God bless.

We need tokeep these nobles, and all Greeter family memberswho are ill, in our prayers. We have also learned theBlack Camel has come for Fred Walters, condolencesto his family.

We only have one birthday in May—Vince Flow,Happy Birthday.

We welcome back our Arcadia brothers, they werevoted in at our last meeting.

John Winters has arranged for new Greeter ballcaps and new orange shirts, more to come soon.

Thanks to our Greeterettes for the great food andsweets provided for our annual picnic in April. TheGreeterettes awarded badges for extended service totwo officers who have served for many years withhonor. President Midge Jordan awarded the badgesto Secretary Jean Batten and Chaplain DottieLaGreco. Congratulations, ladies!

Be a Greeter, join the prestige unit!

The Legion of Honor was disappointed we could notprovide enough men to carry the colors for the

Palmetto Children’s Parade on April 6.At the Spring Ceremonial, the Legion of Honor

had a candidate going through and he will be in-ducted shortly into our unit.

Are you registered with the VA? Very soon, youwill be able to file an “electronic claims applicationform.” About 45 minutes to complete and you will beable to “submit any private evidence you want consid-ered in the case.”

Were you in the US Navy during the Vietnam Warera? The VA has just added 47 more vessels to its listof US Navy and Coast Guard ships exposed to the

defoliant Agent Orange list. You can be eligible fordisability benefits and compensation if you served onany ship that meets VA criteria for service in RVN.

Ever heard of the “Stolen Valor Act?” This fed-eral law makes it illegal to lie about being a warveteran and to make related false statements. The10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has just upheldthe constitutional validity of this 2006 Act. An un-known person(s) somewhere filed a claim that itviolated his/her First Amendment rights!

Who is the oldest Legion of Honor noble with hisbirthday in May? Of the May birthdays on file, thathonor belongs to George Cumming with a May 6 birth-day from the year 1925, way to go, Noble George.

Well, the big item on the “Great Sahib OrientalBand’s agenda is, The ASOB Imperial in Char-

We sadly missed Toronto andDenver. Therefore, we are ready to tumble! Let’s playour heavenly tunes as we never played before. Re-member the dates: June 30 thru July 4.

Good news in the sunshine department; BillCaraker is recuperating at home after a serious backoperation where five vertebrae were fused and wiredtogether. In addition, Lady Dee King had her shoul-der rebuilt in a 3-hour operation. Both are doing

relatively well and we wish them a speedy and com-plete recovery.

As the month of April has passed, we still want towish our winter residents a safe trip home, and surelyhope to see them in the fall safe and sound after theirsummer hiatus.

Nobles, there is still lots to do at our Shrine duringthe summer months, even if you just have lunch ordinner in our lounge.

Remember, support your Shrine, collect pull-tabsand keep a child in your heart.

The Sarasota County Fair is over and I am happyto report that we all survived and are still talking

to each other! There were a few bumps along the roadto the final day; but we made it thanks to all the workof all dedicated volunteers.

What a pleasure it was to have the support andcooperation of sooooooo many Shriners, their ladies, neighbors and friends! What a great experience itwas to see the friendliness and cooperation of all thevolunteers! A big thank you goes out to all who hadany part in helping to fulfill our obligation to theSarasota County Fair. Also a big thank you to fairofficials for giving us this opportunity again thisyear. The North Port Shrine Club came through onboth opening and closing day and some even filledpositions in between. Some workers were there sooften, they began to think they were taking up resi-

dence! In addition, all their efforts were not just forthe monetary benefit as they have been volunteeringfor years; that is typical of Sahib members. I hesitateto mention names but it would be remiss of me not toacknowledge the help and advice of past Sahib FairChairmen Bill Athas, Ken Shipley and particularlyCliff Bloodsworth for all their help and advice.

This year, for the first time, proceeds are sharedby the units and clubs designated by the volunteers. This is in keeping with the Unit Councils desire tohelp the units/clubs financially so they can be in abetter position to help themselves, Sahib, and par-ticularly our Shriners Hospitals for Children. Thanksagain to all our volunteers. We could not have ful-filled our obligation to fair officials without the coop-eration of everyone involved.

Einstein is quoted as saying that insanity is doingthe same things and expecting different results.

The Circus committee is not insane. While some ofour efforts are similar to the past, much is new as faras getting support and results for the success of the31st annual Sahib Shrine Circus. Instead of televi-sion advertising, we went with radio and newspaperadvertising. Past efforts with both cable televisionand network television resulted in big bucks spentand very little performance or results. We may as

well have been selling can openers. We duplicatedsome of the information on the posters and coupons inSpanish. It was realized that there was a large His-panic population in our locale and they like to partici-pate in family oriented activities like the county fairand circuses. Our radio ads also included the localHispanic station. We separated the mailings for theCircus Dad and Mom from the mailing for tickets. This avoided much of the confusion from the past.

Oriental Guide’s notesby Carroll Scribner, [email protected]

Greetings to all, it’s tough to write into the futureso I’ll try to stay with the past and with hope for

the future.I’ve been very busy trying to finish the yearbook.

Thanks to Editor Gary and Public Relations DirctorHarold Eady, it’s on the way to the publisher. Manythanks to those units who got their pictures andinformation in for publication, we are not miraclemakers and could not do them all ourselves. We havea good representation but a number of units and clubsmay not be in the book.

April was a very busy month. We had our tradi-tional Ladies Luncheon, a great Shrine Circus, SpringCeremonial, candidate’s cocktail party and their tripto the Shriners Hospital for Children etc.

Now, it’s time to be thinking of the Florida ShrineAssociation in Fort Myers. This is always an impor-tant part of our year. Our Divan, Clowns, Mariners,

Model Ts and Oriental Band all turn out to representour temple and have a great time doing it, and ourunits usually come home with trophies won in compe-tition! Wouldn’t it be great to have more of our unitsthere to bring home more trophies?

Our membership committee under Bill Zurlo isworking very hard to stem the losses we incur eachyear. It is a tough and demanding job and there is noend to it! I have been busy with handouts, displaysand speaking engagements. Remember, we can’t doour job without your support. How do we get a newShriner? Ask him! Each one gets one!

Replace yourself! Pass on the membership walletsI passed out! They won’t do any good in your car oryour pocket! Need more? See me!

I guess I’ve just about run out of things to say, soit’s time to quit! Best wishes to all and a safe triphome to our snowbirds. We’ll see you all in the fall.

As you read this, most of our winter visitors havegone back north and the roadways are saner. It is

even more important in the summer months to sup-port the activities of our fraternity. We still have thesame expenses to run the temple as most of them arebased upon the fixed costs for the building ratherthan the cost per user.

I have just completed the four-day session inTampa for Shrine treasurers. One hundred thirty-eight miles each day round trip; what a grind. It waswell worth it; however, for Sahib Shrine and me. Oneof the most significant bits of information that Ilearned was that we at Sahib Shrine are very lucky tobe in the financial shape that we find ourselves. Thepast twenty-nine Divans have done an excellent jobwith their fiduciary responsibilities coupled with the

outpouring of support from the nobles. I didn’t talkmuch but I listened a lot. Many temples are in badshape both physically and financially. Past Divanscontinued to spend as if their membership were grow-ing instead of shrinking. The spending was not on themaintenance of their building and as a result, theirtemple is falling apart. Cincinnati has lost theirbuilding and is meeting in a local Scottish Rite facil-ity. Others are close. I hope we can continue to planfor the future as we manage the present. While wehave a finance committee to watch over and advisethe finances of the temple, I want to emphasize thatthe financial statements of Sahib Shrine are open toany member of the fraternity. Just call me to sched-ule a time to review any records you wish to see.

High Twelve Clubby Bob Rodd, Past State President, [email protected]

May is now upon us and Cortez Hi-12 Club #538has gone dark until the first Monday in Novem-

ber. Starting in mid-March several of our membersand their ladies, being snowbirds, headed north forthe summer and fall.

I hope many of you; have been following our hap-penings monthly here in The Reporter reminiscingabout what we have been doing, for those that havebeen attending, and to see what you have been missingfor those reading the articles and thinking about us.

March 16 arrived and so did 29 of our members, ladies and guests (see photo below) for our annualpicnic out on Anna Maria Island. We reserve thelargest pavilion so we can be comfortable with plentyof space to dine. Usually we have grilled hot dogs andhamburgers, but this time a special treat was in storefor all. To our pleasant surprise, Jim and CarolSimpson offered to supply the main course of pulledBBQ Chicken, which I must say, was delicious. Tothis, many side dishes were added by the attendeesalong with soda, iced tea and water. The day wasperfect and we could sit, talk, eat and enjoy the sand, the beach and have a good vantage point for lookingat the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Several interestingstories were shared and some of us even played BocciBall. One of the highlights of the day was havingSharon Rhyno, spouse of Harold Rhyno, with herguitar passing part of the day with her playing andsinging; several of our group joined in singing some ofthe songs. We even had one of our members, LindyNardone accompanying Sharon by playing the har-monica. We had musical spoons available, but notakers. We thank Dave and Sylvia Gardner, who forthe past several years have put together this veryenjoyable event.

On March 18, 17 of us attended Manatee LodgeNo. 31 F & AM for our official Hi-12 night there. First,a lovely dinner was enjoyed; as is the case on eachthird Monday of the month when the Lodge has a

potluck supper for family and friends. The main dishand beverage is prepared by the Lodge and all thoseattending bring side dishes. Before the evenings Lodgemeeting, all convene in the Lodge room where usuallysome kind of program is put on, after which all non-Masons retire to the dining area while the Masonshave their regular meeting. Usually each year CortezHigh Twelve Club #538 makes an official visitation toManatee No. 31 and shares some aspects of ourorganization. That evening I gave a presentationgiving an overall summary of the purposes, projectsand activities that Hi-12 strives to be involved with.In addition to touching on the several aspects of High12, an extra emphasis was given to the many addi-tional activities our club was involved with duringthe past several months. A couple of these activitiesincluded music and song. Tonight we shared some ofthat by having Sharon Rhyno, dressed in her cowboygarb and guitar, adding some lovely music and songto the evening’s presentation which seemed to beenjoyed by all. An honorary membership was given toWorshipful Master Mike Grimes with the hope hewill come and visit our group; he said he would do hisbest to do so.

Even though Cortez Club is dark does not meanHigh 12 is dark. Several clubs throughout Florida aswell as in other states hold get-togethers variousdays, times and months. To check out more aboutHigh 12 for the State of Florida go to our website:<www.FLHI12.org> and browse around checking thevarious menus on the website. You can also check outHigh Twelve International by going on the website:<www.high12.org>

If you know of someone who qualifies, you or theycan get in touch with me for additional information.

Please put us on your list to come and visit us in onNovember 5 when we meet again in the fall. We willstill be at Duff’s Original Buffet at the corner of 60thAvenue and Route 41 in Bradenton. We usually ar-

Questions on religion & MasonryDoes Masonry use symbols which are diabolical innature? No! Masonry uses many symbols—its ourprimary way of teaching, as it has been the primaryway of teaching from ancient times (just try teachingarithmetic without number symbols—but there isnothing satanic about them. Symbols mean what theperson uses them to mean. X may be a St. Andrew’scross, ancient symbol of Scotland, or it may mean“multiply two numbers together” for “10” in RomanNumerals, or “unknown” in algebra, or “don’t do this,”or “truce,” or “Xenon” in chemistry, or “by” as in 2 x 4board, or “this is the spot,” or even “railroad cross-ing.”) It depends on the meaning in the mind of theperson using it.

It’s the same with Masonic symbols. We some-times use the five-pointed star, for example. Some

people choose to see that as a symbol of witchcraft. Itis their right to use it that way in their own thinkingif they wish. However, we use it as a symbol of man, because that is the oldest meaning (the five pointsrefer to the head, the hands and the feet.) The five-pointed star, with one point downward, is used by theOrder of the Eastern Star. Some Masons like to see itas a symbol of the devil. But it is also known as the“Star of Incarnation,” with the downward pointingray representing that moment when God came downfrom Heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost, and it is in that meaning it is used by the EasternStar. “We have seen his star in the East, and havecome to worship him” (to be continued in the June2012 issue.)

Building is a process which cannot be completelyexplained in the presentation of degree work.

Some additional application must be used to under-stand fellowship, brotherly love and how certain toolspeculiar to the builder’s trade, may apply to dailyliving. Some of this learning we receive throughLodge attendance and repetition of symbolism, butwe need to think about what goal we want to achieveand how best to attain it.

I think we all agree that Freemasonry requiresactive participation by a member to get the most fromit. This is why we suggest that you attend yourMasonic bodies as often as possible. We also need to

encourage our brothers to make every effort to con-tinue their quest for knowledge of our fraternity byreceiving the additional degrees of the Ancient andAccepted Scottish Rite. These degrees will be con-ferred on May 12 and 19 at the Tampa Scottish RiteCenter. Remember, Masonry needs people who areloyal, informed and knowledgeable about the frater-nity. These are the ones who make the organizationwhat it is; and we are justly proud of their accom-plishments. Let’s help all our brothers attain moreknowledge so they can demonstrate the principles ofMasonry for all to see.

rive between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m.; lunch is served at11:00 a.m. with our program starting around High 12(Noon). If you have questions please email me, give

me a call, or talk to any of our club members. We lookforward to hearing from you and seeing you.

The ancient craftsmen were very skilled and theircraft was considered to be indispensable to the

welfare of both church and state. They were the menwho built castles and cathedrals. For this reason, they were not placed under the same restrictions, aswere other workers. They were “free” to do their work, travel, and live their lives in a manner that was inline with their duties.

The Masons organized into “guilds,” somethingakin to a trade union, and individual companies orgroups of Masons contracted for specific constructionprojects.

In the England of that time, various crafts (car-penters, distillers, pewterers, ironworkers, etc. alsoorganized into guilds, but most of the population

worked under bond to the owners of the land on whichthey lived.

The word “Accepted” also goes back to the time ofthe operative mason. During the later years of theMiddle Ages, there were few educated outside themonasteries of the church. The “accepted” mason wasoriginally a man who, in a lodge operative in origin orstill partly so in character, was for all practicalpurposes of membership accepted as a mason.

From this practice grew in course of time the useof the words accepted” and “adopted” to indicate aman who had been admitted into the inner fellowshipof symbolic Masons.

How did the words “Free” and “Accepted” originate?from a R.W.Terry Black submission on the Broward Masons Yahoo Group.

. . .continued from page 24Treasurer’s notes

Nobles and supporters knew that thecontributions from the Circus Dad andCircus Mom program were to offset theexpense of the Friday morning show forabout 1200 area schoolchildren. A listingof those contributors is listed elsewherein this Reporter. Again, the response hascontinued its downward path yet I thankeveryone that participated or eventhought about participating and werenot able to. It meant a lot to each andevery one of those kids which means a lotto me. To see their faces as they gazedupon a camel or the gracefulness of thehuge elephants, live for the first time, isa miracle in itself. Another new effortwas the group sales effort run by OmerQuesnel, the results will be known in afew weeks but the reception by many ofthe organizations was positive.

As you read this, the Circus is history. As I write this, the circus is two weeksaway. I can’t predict the future. I canonly tell you of the Herculean effort ofthe entire committee to produce a greatshow and return a suitable profit to ouroperating budget. I can’t put into wordsmy gratitude to Bob and Pam Trudel fortheir many hours and days coordinating

the schools, Dad and Mom returns, ticketreceipts, program book ads, and justkeeping everything on track; GarySchweinshaupt did another great job onthe program book cover; CharlesHamilton organized the program bookreceipts; Mary Jane Hamilton scheduledand managed the ticket sales; the Pro-vost Guard managed the traffic and park-ing; the Greeters and Greeterettes helpedthe patrons safely to their seats; BillBatten and Bob Rodd sold programs;Linda Glendinning and Jackie Mitchellmade popcorn and drinks for the schoolkids; the Honor Guard impressed theguests with their presentation of theColors; Ron and Jackie Conner for thehospitality room for all participants; andlastly, but certainly not least, the SahibClowns greeted the guests and performedtheir usual professional antics. As usualwhen you try to list names and groupslike this, you omit at least one. I apolo-gize if that happened to you.

One of the many interesting presen-tations pertained to the Shriners Hospi-tals for Children. As you know, we operate22 hospitals. Most of the cost of thosehospitals is met by donations andfundraising efforts just as other hospi-tals like St. Jude’s. The big difference isthat we have an endowment to assistpaying for the children’s care whereasSt. Jude’s spends it as they get it and arealways just a breath away from disaster. While we try to limit the need for distri-butions from that endowment, it is al-ways there for the kids. As a point of

lbs each) of pull-tabs for our Shrine Hos-pital. Before I had a chance to “thank”them, another Noble Larry Warner gave

. . .continued from page 24High Priest & Prophet’s notes

me a large bag of pull-tabs that he col-lected at Country Lakes Village wherehe lives. What a great feeling to be aShriner and have people working hard tohelp us help the hospital.

Thank you. Thank you all.On the Lighter side:When you pray for others, God listens

to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, rememberthat someone has prayed for you.

Stay healthy and remember those whoare not!

comparison, in 1978, our fraternity had amembership of 941,799 and spent about42 million dollars on the hospitals. Thatcame out to about $44.60 per noble. In2012, we have a membership of 309,894and have a budget of 759 million dollars. That comes out to $2,449.22 per member. We all gripe about the price of gasolineand we can’t control that. We can controlthe cost per member of our hospitals byincreasing the number of our members. Most of us came into the Shrine the old-fashioned way; we asked to join. It isallowed by our by-laws to invite a brotherMaster Mason to join the Shrine. Go backto your Blue Lodge and talk about thegreat things that we do and present theopportunity to accomplish even more withtheir membership and participation.

I didn’t mean to turn the financialreport into a membership drive; yet, youall realize that they are so tightly inter-woven. We had our initiation Ceremo-nial this past month and are lookingforward to the celebration of our 30thyear in operation. Dust off the memora-bilia and come join us in June for thefestivities.

. . .continued from page 33How did the words “Free” and“Accepted” originate?

Candidates were “accepted” into free-masonry no earlier than the mid-seven-teenth century. We first meet the phrase“free and accepted” in 1722.

By the late 1600’s the demand for thetype of architecture that lent itself to theguild type of operation was declining.Architecture itself was changing; and thenumbers of men, as well as the number ofoperative lodges, were declining.

Increasingly, Masonry adopted thelegends and habits of the old operativelodges, for spiritual and moral purposes.

As time went on, there became manymore “Accepted” members than therewere “Operative” members.

Sometime in the eighteenth century, the “Accepted Masons” outnumbered the“Operative Masons” and Masonry becameexclusively a speculative organizationrather than an operative one.

beashrinernow.combeashrinernow.com continues to attractquality candidates. To date, more than1,200 men have inquired about Freema-sonry or becoming a Shriner. While thenumbers of those interested are impres-sive, we really need more mentors toensure candidates receive the attentionthey need and deserve. Consider joiningthe more than 1,150 Shriners who arealready virtual mentors.

As a virtual mentor, you will be pairedwith a candidate in your area who has

similar interests. Communicating byphone, email or in person, you will havethe opportunity to share your knowledgeand enthusiasm about Masonry andabout being a Shriner. You will answerquestions or concerns, help find the Lodgebest suited to the candidate's interests, and help him with his journey to becomea Shriner.

For the first time since Health CareHeroes began, readers chose the Phi-

lanthropist of the Year through an on-line survey. Middle school student LeighMarie Dittman, 11, is the winner.

Dittman has been a patient atShriners Hospitals for Children® - Tampasince she was an infant, being treated forthe condition of osteogenesis imperfecta,a brittle bone disease. For the past eightyears, Dittman and her family have heldan annual fundraiser and have raisedmore than $350,000 for the hospital.

Dittman is an ambassador of her hos-pital and works to promote awarenessand funds so that more children willreceive the medical care that has changedher life.

Leigh’s event consists of dinner, asilent auction, a live auction and generalraffle prizes. Approximately 600 peoplefrom the community attend each event.

Dittman has said she is on a quest toraise $1 million. She has devoted themajority of her time spreading the word

about Shriners Hospitals for Children®- Tampa. She has had 29 breaks thatthe hospital has casted, seven rod sur-geries in her femurs and tibias thatthe hospital has performed, and thenthere is the medicine she receives tokeep her bones strong. In addition tothat, she has received walkers andwheelchairs.

“Words cannot describe the grati-tude or love that we have for the hospi-tal and its staff,” Dittman’s parentssaid. “They have helped Leigh becomethe wonderful, generous lady that sheis today.”

Dittman has given several speechesthroughout the United States abouther disease and about Shriners Hospi-tals for Children® - Tampa, and hasappeared in several public service an-nouncements for the hospital.

Many of you have heard me discuss how you asShriners can be personally involved in support-

ing our Shriner’s Hospitals for Children by becominga contributor to Sahib’s Plaque Program. The pro-gram is new in that funds raised through this meansnow go directly to the hospital; prior to this, the fundswent to the Transportation Fund. This is a programby which you as an individual, as a Shriner and hislady, yours or a friend’s business, etc. desire to assistand be a personal giver to the Shriner’s Hospital forChildren. You might desire to make a gift in honor orin memory of someone special that you love, loved orthat you feel deserves special recognition.

What better way than to share $100 or more, tomake you feel great about what you are doing andknowing you are directly contributing to the children, that we as Shriners, are determined to do our best tomake their life better. The plaque you receive is verya very beautiful one (see photo) that you will, I amsure, be proud to display in your home or workplaceor give to someone, the plaque is in honor of, for all tosee and enjoy. The plaque has a place for five years ofparticipation where we will send you a current yearplate to be attached. You are only obligated to do thefirst year but we sincerely hope you will want anddecide to continue each year to completion. And whoknows, you just may want to continue and get anotherplaque started after that. It is all up to you. Each yearyou send Sahib a minimum of $100 payable toShriners Hospital for Children, if you are stayingin the loop, and we will in return send you your yearlytab.

Just a short while back I delivered a plaque to abusiness in Bradenton; when I walked in a womanasked me what I wanted. When I showed her theplaque, she got real excited and showed me a wall byone of the doors where all of their customers could

see. She had three plaques permanently attached tothe wall with a space for the new one. This would beher and her husband’s 16th year of participation andshe was very proud to be a part. She told me that acustomer, who was a Shriner, told them about theprogram. That was 16 years ago. They were notinvolved in Masonry but had a strong feeling ofwanting to help the children and got involved. Theynow know it goes directly to the hospital and are veryappreciative of that fact. Another note about this wasshe told me last year they were in the red but theystill made sure to stay part of the program.

When we pay our dues we give a token of $5 to theHospital Fund (although more can be added if de-sired) but for many that is the only financial commit-ment we give for the children we love and desire to seeget the best of care.

This is your chance to be a financial giver to ourchildren. Think about it, $100 a year. Think of it thisway it’s only $8.33 a month or $1.92 a week or $.28cents a day or about $.01 an hour. Just think of thesatisfaction you or someone you know will get for thatand knowing that our Shriner children will be a littlebetter off.

If all of us contributed to this fund, it would bestupendous. But for now, we add you on one by one.

For questions or for an application: Please giveme a call at (941) 776-0937 or email me at<[email protected]> my home address is 1252725th Court East, Parrish, Florida 34219. You also canwatch for me at many of the weekly Sahib Shrineluncheons. You can also stop in the Sahib office andask Sherri for an application; you can mail the checkto me or give it to Sherri. Please remember to makecheck payable to Shriners Hospital for Children

I sure do hope I hear from you.

Thanks to Oriental Guide Carroll Scribner, theSahib Shriners got an invitation to participate at

a Pineview School Custodial Day on March 14, where200 people attended. Sahib had a very nice displaybooth and we distributed a great deal of Shrinerpromotional material. Scrib also gave an interestingtalk on Shriners to a class who gave him a rousingovation. The main thrust of our efforts was the pro-motion of Masonry and Shriners on what we do andstand for.

The feedback was very good. This turned out to bea wonderful PR effort and could lead to more mem-bers to our great organization.

Another wonderful PR event took place when theVenice Shrine Club hosted an appreciation breakfastto several of the Publix Store managers who hadpermitted our Shriners to collect donations at theirstores during our Hospital Days fundraiser. Each ofthe Managers was presented plagues to commemo-rate the event. One of many highlights was the pres-ence of one of our Shriner Hospital patients, gradeone student, Sophia who captured the hearts of every-one present. Anthony Vignocchi of the PR committeeattended and provided several photos. Congratula-tions to the Venice Shrine Club for organizing thissuccessful and important special event.

We are approaching our last meeting of this sea-son, as our officers and members head north.

Take with you the prayers and harmony of yourtemple and remember the children in our ShrinersHospitals for Children.

If you have any ideas you would like us to imple-ment, email me. This coming year we want to make alarger donation toward the more than $1,000,000 theDaughters of the Nile gives annually to the Shriners

Hospital; we can do it, and we should do it. Love is notlove until it is given away. Let us show our love.

If you really want to feel a thrill, attend SupremeSession just once and listen to the Head of the Foun-dation report on this year’s donation. It is an amazingfeeling. And we can all take part in it. Let’s do it!

Well now you have seen the “Lights, Camera andAction part” known as our Court Production or

the Installation of Officers held at our Sar-I Theatreon March 31. Our Lady Kay Weyer was fantastic inher “new role” as High Priestess of Sar-I Court #79.Congratulations to Lady Kay, our new High Priestessand all cast members on a job well done!

Watch our Sar-I “Bill Board” for future produc-tions starting with the next feature on May 11 at theusual time, usual place! This will be our last meetingand the curtain will be going down at that time, untilwe all meet again in September!

That’s it for now from the “Little Sar-I Theatre” offBeneva Road. See you in Court, God willing and theCreek don’t rise!

March was a very busy month for the Mariners.Several Mariners worked the Globetrotters

event at Robarts Arena for a fundraiser. Thanks toCub Dickerson who put the event together. Next, theArcadia Parade was well attended by the Mariners.Howard House and Yummie invited the Mariners totheir home for a potluck dinner with over 40 Mari-ners, Mates and guests in attendance. The Marinersjoined Sahib for a fun day at Tampa Bay Downs. There was a lot of betting going on, but I don’t thinkthere was a lot of money won. A good time was had byall that attended. Our next event was a golf tourna-ment at Village Green Golf Club. The weather wasperfect for a challenging game of golf. After golfing, afantastic dinner was served. A big Thank You to TomHardin for sponsoring this event.

The regular meeting was held on April 11. We alsohad our annual picnic on April 18. This year the picnicwas held at the Coast Guard Station on Cortez Road.

There is still time to sign up for the Florida ShrineMariners and Yacht Clubs Association (FSMYCA)Change of Watch on May 4-6 in Ft. Myers. Our veryown Past Commodore Ken Pedersen will be installedas Commodore of the FSMYCA. Congratulations Com-modore Ken!

The 2012 Mariner Handbooks are available to allMariners that have paid their 2012 dues. See GeorgeCancro, Bud Glidden or me for your copy.

There is a lot going on in the Mariners Unit andthe best way to have fun is to get involved. We arealways looking for someone to take charge or helpwith Mariner’s events. You don’t have to own a boatto become a Mariner. In fact, most Mariners don’town a boat. We are a parade unit that likes to havefun. Our ladies are also invited to almost every event.
