LOCALLY OWNED SINCE 1972

Summer GetawayMany of our residents

left in April, but for those of you still in the planning stage for your summer getaway, here are some reminders:

1. Pick up a House Watch Form from the office and fill it out. This form provides us with contact numbers in case we need to talk with you about your property. Having a local contact during the summer is also a very good idea.

2. Have someone service

the outside of your prop-erty while you are away to keep your plants green and the weeds from growing. Monsoon winds can leave a lot of debris in your yard, especially near construc-tion sites. Monsoon rains, if they come, can transform your beautiful yard into a weed patch. It’s easier and cheaper to plan now for landscape maintenance than to wait somewhere up north for a letter from me. The

Activities Office maintains a list of residents who will watch your house and yard while you are gone.

3. Be aware that some-one could be looking for vacant homes to burglar-ize. Make your home look lived in. Check with your neighbors to see if someone nearby is staying through the summer. Ask them to watch for newspapers, flyers, phone books and other un-wanted items lying on your

front patio, and ask them to discard them. For the same reason, ask your summer maintenance person to keep your front and rear patios clean. Monsoon dust and dead leaves and flowers are a sure sign you haven’t been home for awhile.

4. If you haven’t already done so, treat your yard with pre-emergent weed control to prevent weeds from sprouting after summer rains. Talk to your landscape maintenance service regarding this.

5. Turn off the water sup-ply to toilets, washing ma-chines, dishwashers, and ice-makers. If you turn the water off at the main line outside, re-move the handle. That makes it less obvious that you are away for an extended time.

6. Cancel your news-paper subscriptions. Re-subscribe in the Activities Office when you return, and your Activities Fund gets a commission.

7. Unplug electronic devices to protect from light-ning induced power surges.

Garden & Golf Condo As-sociations

The House Watch Form is especially important for Golf 1, Golf 2, and Garden Condo residents. Between April 1 and October 1 we will put you on a City of Mesa Trash Furlough Program while you are away. This will save the Associations significantly on monthly trash collection charges!

GripesSome residents have

asked me to remind everyone of the obvious – something that needs to be done every once in a while. If you are using the Dog Park, you are responsible for your pet and should be watching it at all times. If you are using the Fitness Center and no one is watching the big TV’s, turn them off. Thanks.

ErrataMy apologies that Burt

Marcus was left off the Com-mittee Member List in the April edition of the VOICE. He is in his second year as a member of the Finance Committee.

Starting May 1 . . .. . . the Association/Activities Office will open at 8 AM

and close at Noon, Monday through Friday. If you need keys for an evening activity, be sure to get the keys picked up before noon. Also, Coffee Time has moved to the Superstition Room every Tuesday at 9 AM.

Tag-A-Long Tour . . .. . . of the Ronald McDonald Houses in Phoenix will be on

Tuesday, May 4. We need your help in delivering buckets of pull tabs. After our tour we will stop for a Dutch Treat lunch at Jerry’s Restaurant. Meet on the east side of the Auditorium at 9:30 AM for carpooling. Please sign up in the Activities Office. Many thanks to all of you for your continued support of this ongoing project. We have now collected 1,114,325 tabs and $841 in cash donations. Keep bringing those tabs to the office.

Memorial Day Picnic . . .. . . plans are underway for Monday, May 31. We will

provide fried chicken, plates, silverware and cups. All you need to bring is a salad, vegetable or dessert for feed 12 people. Don’t forget a serving spoon. This event is for SSV residents only (and out of town overnight house guests). Doors open and Attitude Adjustment is at 4:30 PM. Dinner bell rings at 5:15 PM. Tickets are only $3 and MUST be purchased in advance. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door.

Room requests . . .. . . for the June 1, 2010 – May 31, 2011 season are

completed and confirmations are ready to be picked up in the Activities Office. A HUGE thank you goes to all of you who filled in ALL of the blanks on your request forms – this helps so much in trying to accommodate everyone. If I could just figure out a way to add four more days to a week for the many groups, clubs, events and activities needing rooms, the reservations would be a breeze.

The end of May . . .. . . is the close of the 09/10 season. I thank our many,

many valuable volunteers for all of your time and effort help-ing me with committees, events and activities. I couldn’t do it without YOU ! ! !

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you moms!

An Appreciation Dinner was held April 8 for the Voices and their spouses to say “Thank you” for their fine perfor-mances. We dined on KFC chicken, green beans,

coleslaw, biscuits and chocolate bundt cake. It was delicious.

Larry Stevens spearheaded the event, gave the blessing,

and made a short speech thanking Dee Rabjohn and pianist Val Gibson, noting that Mary Williams and Sylvia Hansen were not able to attend. Dee Rabjohn, Director, thanked the chorus then led us in our signature song “Go With a Song in Your Heart.” (Some of us had forgotten the words, but we muddled through it.)

We will gather again in the fall to start preparing for our two performances for the next season. Take care of your voices, stay well, but most of all ENJOY LIFE! See you next October.

Village Voice of HopePastor Milt

Family relationships have lasting significance and value to life. In our senior adult years, we have lasting memories of home and fam-ily. Now, in our grandpar-enting stage of life, we have a priority to be positive and affirming in our relationships. It is a prayer as grandparents that our children, who have been taught Godly principles and respect for Biblical teach-ing, will follow that example in their homes.

Proverbs 1: 8 reads: “Listen, my Son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” This is referenced as being mentors of the faith

we possess in God. There is a comparison in the words “instruction” and “teaching”. A father is to have the Godly trait of instructing his children in Godly principles of action and deeds, as he moves about in the world. A mother has the Godly gift of teaching her children in the home, day by day, the significance and les-sons from the Word of God and how to apply those les-sons to life. The key words are “Listen and do not forsake.” Now as grandparents, it is our turn to reveal faithfulness to Godly things we taught our children and thereby pass on a legacy of faith to generations following. May God enable us to continue “listening”

and not “forsake” what we taught our children. I pray that for you and your family relationships.

You are sincerely invited to attend Springs Chapel Worship each Sunday morn-ing at the beautiful SSV Auditorium at 9 AM. You will find encouragement from the word of God and from the fellowship of our worship-pers at coffee hour following worship. We are a non-de-nominational worship min-istry, with a strong emphasis on what God teaches us in His Word, The Holy Bible. Join us in Worship and be blessed!

Happy Mother’s Day, Grandmother!

BIBLE STUDYArdella Burtman

There is a community Bible Study every Friday morning at 9 AM in the Superstition Room. This is an interdenominational study, open to men and women. We are careful to keep the class to one hour, so you will be out by 10 AM.

There is no charge and no book to buy. Please bring your Bible, any translation will do. We are presently study-

ing Philippians. This is a verse-by-verse study which will take 12-15 weeks total. We started in February and antici-pate that we will conclude the study by the first of June. However, since we have no need to keep a schedule, we will proceed as time and comments permit. Sylvia Hansen is the teacher. Even if you have missed some classes or will miss some classes, you are welcome. Of course, there is some building of content one class on the next, but also in a sense each class stands alone. If you have any questions, call Ardella Burtman at 480-993-3102.

SECURITY COMMITTEE

ASKING YOUR HELP

Bill SheaThe general goal of the SSV Security Committee is

to develop an active Block Watch program throughout our community. A second and growing responsibility is communicating security ideas, concerns and progress to our community.

This particular communication goal is carried out in two fashions. The first is gathering information and the other side of it is to disseminate good information. A Block Watch program is the single best vehicle for getting the word out, however, there are many areas that, unfortunately, do not have a Block Watch. (For more information on Block Watch please contact Mike Tucker at [email protected]).

The single best way for the Committee to get its job done is for you, the members of the community, to keep us informed; in turn we can get the word out to the larger SSV community. We have established a simple way to inform us of any incident that involves security. We have devised a simple Incident Report. We have just finished a new revision, which makes the report simple, direct and fits on one page. The Incident Report itself is a direct request for information, namely what happened, where and when. That will allow the Committee to spread the word, if necessary, and take appropriate measures when warranted.

These Incident Report sheets can be found in the Activities Office. The Incident Report should be given to the block Captain. If there is no Block Captain, the report should be turned into the Office. A representative of the HOA will share the information with the commit-tee with special respect for privacy.

The Incident Report can be used for everything from an aggressive solicitor to a possible break-in. In no way does this Incident Report supplant contacting agencies when it makes sense to do so. We do not replace the Police or Fire or even the Security agency that patrols our settlement. This incident report can be filled out after a Police reportable incident has occurred.

This Incident Report is just another way that the Security Committee assists in continuing to make this community the safe and comfortable place it is.

Sunland Springs Village Homeowners AssociationMonthly Manager Meeting Minutes-

March 23, 2010 SSV Auditorium

Presenter: John Lippert, SSV HOA Manager Jeff Decker-Vice President SSV HOA Board

******The Sunland Springs Village HOA Manager Master HOA

Meeting was called to order at 9:36AM.

Manager’s Report- John Lippert provided the February 28, 2010 financial report. The report showed the receipt of the majority of Annual HOA fees. As of the close of business in February there were approximately 36 late or delinquent fees payments. The propane expense is still at zero for the year, we still have 5000 gallons of propane from last year’s bulk purchase for use at the pool. The next bulk purchase is being scheduled for late March or early April. John said in the winter we use approximately 1000 gallons a week. The general maintenance expense includes fixing the icemaker and a refrigerator in the Auditorium. Because it was an un-usual expense, the repair expenses from January’s storm were charged to the Reserve Fund. Questions and comments from Residents, John and Jeff:

1. Resident- Concern was expressed for the amount of plants and the irrigation of the trees and cacti that causes them to have shallow roots. John explained that the City of Mesa required the builder establish the plants and irrigation, but the HOA will replace them using few plants, slow growing palo verde trees and saguaro that need less water and trimming.

2. Resident-There are several large saguaro in the Village that homeowners would like to give away, why can’t we plant them along Springwood? Jeff said he is aware of the trees but although the trees would be donated it would cost several thousand dollars to move them and with their long arms they are more than likely to break apart in the move. Farnsworth is instead looking for 3 that are of similar size to those already on Springwood that do not yet have arms.

3. John-We have a new Fitness trainer. Greg recom-mended him before he left. Wayne Phillips is a retired health & fitness professor from ASU and is already spending a lot of his time at the Fitness Center so that he can meet and help our residents.

4. John-The Annual HOA meeting went well in Febru-ary. It marked the end of several of our committee terms. We have had a lot of folks fill the open spots, but there are still a few openings and turnover. Let John know if you would like to participate.

5. Jeff-Phase 7 (north of Guadalupe) ground work has begun. It will be about a year before the houses are ready for occupancy. The first homes will be started this summer.

6. Jeff- 5 homes were sold two weeks ago and one last week.

There being no further questions or comments the meet-ing ended 9:47 AM.Respectfully submitted, Fran Davidson, HOA Advisory Board

KARAOKE PARTY

Monica Rae SteinSeveral partiers were

dressed in baby attire and brought their baby pictures for our “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby” poster. The room was decorated with all kinds of baby things, and Albert Heuring brought one of his embroidered baby quilts. We saw lots of bibs and pacifiers, along with hair ribbons and bonnets as we paid tribute to our baby days and songs about our baby – no matter what age.

Ivan started the evening with “Take Good Care of my Baby” followed by Dan

with “One for My Baby.” Monica was “Back in Baby’s Arms” and Bud sang “But-terfly Kisses.” Darrel John-son gave us “Rose Colored Glasses” and got the dancers up for “Elvira.” The girls were up with “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby, “Baby Face,” and “Delta Dawn.” Wayne was “Walking my Baby back Home” and was joined by Ronnie for “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby.” The guys sang “Sweet Caroline” and “Beyond the Sea.” Dan intoned “Having My Baby” and “Clementine.” Ivan sang “Sweet Dream Baby”

and “Romeo and Juliet” and teamed up with Bud for “I Be-lieve” and “Bye Bye Love.” Ivan and Monica duo’d on “What a Wonderful World” and were joined by our own Sonny and Cher (Judi and Kathy) for “I Got You Babe.” Bud had the room awestruck as he sang “My Way.” We stood and joined hands for our closing song, “God Bless the U.S.A.”

We are on vacation so no party in May. Join us on June 4 for our Luau Party. Get out those grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts and flip flops and let’s party! See flyer for details.

ADOPT-A-

STREETBarb and Gary DuFour

We would like to thank all the volunteers who helped with the clean up along Baseline Road between Signal Butte and Meridian on Saturday, April 10, at 7:30 AM. Eighteen vol-unteers came to help, and the job was complet-ed in about an HOUR. The workers included: Jerry Nelson, Dale and Martha Hawkins, Wally Hoblit, Dave Coppinger, Carol Miller, Dan and Connie Radeka, Wayne and Holly Pake, Jim and Marilyn Hazel, Mildred Passig, Joe and Kathy Fellhauer, Al and Myra Lillie and Kathy Thomp-son. Thanks again to an awesome crew. We had fun.

Billiards Club

Jane E. HarrelFriday evening pool is so much

fun. It is open to all residents, and you don’t need a partner. Each per-son is assigned a number, then the numbers are called to play at a table for one game. New table alignments are made for each of the six games played, and you never know who your partner or opponents might be. It looks like a Chinese Fire Drill when you start a new game. What a great way to meet people and have a fun time doing it.

The Summer Fun Play of the Kachina Ladies League plays ev-ery Thursday. We travel around to various parks each week, play pool from 1 to 3 PM, but the best part is which restaurant for lunch before play. What a great way to meet others and see the different lifestyles in our neighboring parks. Hope you can join us.

Sunland Springs Village Voice May 2010

Jane E. HarrelAfter a rather wet and cold win-

ter here in SSV, we are now having beautiful spring weather, and it is time to get outside. What do you say to a walk around the Village? You don’t need special equipment, other people, a certain time of day and it won’t cost you any money — just take a stroll.

Did you know that we have our very own arboretum? It is not a very big one, but it is a nice stroll from the corner of Monterey and Spring-wood north to Monte Circle. A nice path wanders through the plants and trees and many are named. Those who live in the Golf Condos, Twin and Town Homes and have no input on the bushes and plants that are decorating their homes may find

this an enlightening stroll of an evening.

Continue your stroll a little further north on Springwood and enjoy the bougainvillea hill hiding the second tee of the Superstition course. The pond (water hazard for you golfers) on the west side of the street is also nice to enjoy. (Remember, you can’t walk on the golf course during playing hours, but you can still take in the fountain and rock waterfall views.)

While you are at this pond, notice the plastic coyotes that were put up by the Golf Course ground-skeeper, Bill Kyle. These animal lookalikes have drastically reduced the duck population. There are plans to place these decoys at the Four Peaks third and fourth holes

if the waterfowl population remains unmanageable.

Okay so now that you have warmed up, you may be ready for the five-mile route through the Vil-lage. Paul Hemsley and Ed Leahy originally marked out this route for bikers and walkers. It starts at the northwest corner of Medina and Springwood, heads West to Olivewood meandering over to Copperwood, down to Navarro and eventually gets you back to the start-ing point. You never retrace your steps, nor do you trespass onto the private condo roads, and you have sidewalks all the way. If you live

anywhere along the route, follow it and you will find yourself back home without getting lost. There are yellow arrows and mileage markers pointing the way. You will also find benches donated by Bingo at the Pro Shop on Wattlewood, Kilarea and Springwood, and Medina and the golf course. A map of the route is available in the Activities Office, and a refreshing of the directional arrows and mileage has been nicely done by Jerry Nelson, who is an avid daily walker.

Jerry thought that the new homes in the southern sec t ion of the Village needed a route they could follow as well. He marked out a shorter 3.1-mile r o u t e w h i c h starts at the Pro Shop on Wat-tlewood, heads south across

Guadalupe, weaves around the streets through the new area to the Softball Field (where you will find restrooms and water) then back up to Wattlewood where you started.

If you are curious about the new Phase 7 and the Siphon Draw being built, you can start at Copper-wood at the very southeast corner of SSV and trek along the drainage ditch (at some time in the future to be known as Meridian Road), and down to Elliott and Meridian. You will be walking in undeveloped land most of the way, so wear proper shoes. The Siphon Draw is a water retention basin that will have water

draining from the north, south and west to the east. It is quite a project, and you really have to walk to see it as you can’t get the effect of it from the street level.

For you more adventurous types who like to do group out-ings, contact Dan Fortney, who is the head of the SSV Hiking Club. They go on scheduled hikes into the desert, the mountains, and all those less inhabited lands. He will tell you the schedule, how to prepare, what to wear, how much water you should have, type of boots, etc. Call him at 602.228.6448 or email him at [email protected] for more information.

After all the exercise, you need a place to relax and join your family and friends for an old-fashioned out-door picnic. What better place for it than at the SSV Picnic Park?

The Picnic Park has four cov-ered tables that seat eight, a large grassy area to play on, a restroom nearby, electrical power and a parking lot. If you have a large gathering on your calendar soon and your house or yard would be incon-venient, please consider using the picnic park for your party. Contact the Activities Office for availability of the Picnic Park.

To get to the Picnic Park, take Springwood to Medina, West to Wattlewood, South to Nell, then an immediate left to Teakwood and right into the parking lot. The dog parks are there too, but unfortu-nately, no dogs are allowed in the picnic area.

Have a great time enjoying the outdoors whatever path you choose.

YOGA OFF THE MAT

Christine MarcusThe Yoga participants at SSV

also enjoy learning about other related topics off the mat. This spring we participated in a lecture on Reflexol-ogy with a presentation and hands-on by a licensed therapist. Many truly enjoyed learning about the “reflex”

areas on the feet and hands that cor-respond to specific organs, glands and other parts of the body. It is believed that applying pressure to these reflex areas can promote health in the cor-responding organs through energetic pathways. Several participated in hands-on Reflexology treatments, which was pure delight!

REIKI, another concept in the world of alternative health treat-ment, was explored. We had an informative talk by several REIKI

practitioners who volunteer at local hospitals. Reiki (pronounced RAY-KEY) means universal energy. It can bring peaceful relaxation to the mind and body. Those interested experienced a “hands-off” session working in the space about six inches above the body. The ex-perience was described as “warm, glowing radiance.”

Have you ever walked a Laby-rinth? Well the Yogis did so at Mariposa Gardens, following a

presentation by the family service counselor. Labyrinths are ancient symbols that can be found in many cultures, such as Native Ameri-cans, Scandinavian and Northern European cultures. Earliest known labyrinths were found in Spain around 750 BC. The Chartres Labyrinth, most often associated with churches, is the style used at Mariposa Gardens. Labyrinths are intended to relax and renew the mind. Each individual’s experience

of walking the labyrinth is unique. The beauty of the labyrinth is that it changes to meet your needs.

YOGA off the mat helps the Yoga participants enrich their knowl-edge off the mat, to compliment their Yoga practice. Join us for YOGA on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 – 10 AM in the SSV Audi-torium. Cost is $3.50; wear comfort-able clothing to move in and bring a mat. If you have any questions, call Chris Marcus at 986-6092.

Clubs and ActivitiesCurly Long At Cub’s Spring Training Game

Linda Granzow, Coordinator of Team Promotion, SSV Softball Club

Craig Ahlstrom of Farnsworth invited one of our SSV Softball Club members, Curly Long, to throw out the first pitch at a Cub’s spring baseball game on March 31. Other members of our Club, namely Dick Paulin, Jerry Mason and Bruce Stofferan,

have also had the opportunity to do this.Curly’s opportunity came in part because he

was an active softball player. Farnsworth is a sig-nificant supporter of Mesa’s HoHoKam Park and the Cubs spring training program, and Curly was sure that because of this Craig wanted someone who stood a good chance of getting the ball over the plate. Curly said he was also most concerned about not embarrassing himself, the Softball Club and SSV – he said he could see himself missing the catcher completely! Actually, all went well as the player who caught the pitch said it was a strike over the plate . . . whew!

Craig also made several tickets available to other Softball Club members, and a number of current players took advantage of the opportu-nity. Curly and the Softball Club thank Craig and Farnsworth for this thoughtful gesture on behalf of our Club.

Computer Club

Jane E. Harrel, [email protected]

Ahhh, summert ime — when things slow down, the temperature rises, the A/C hums and ceiling fans whirr 24/7. It also means that the Computer Club only meets twice a month instead of weekly. Usually we meet

on the first and third Wednes-day, but just for May we will meet the second and fourth Wednesdays. The Men’s Golf Club wants to use the Superstition Room, and it was easier to reschedule our meetings rather than hurry to finish before they invade.

In the summer no dues are collected, no attendance is taken, and we don’t con-duct any of those boring busi-ness meetings. We just have fun. Here is what we have

scheduled (may be subject to change) for May:

May 12: Allen Schaef-fer will show us the improved SSV HOA website

May 26: Jane Harrel will present her class on Email.

ALL SSV RESIDENTS TAKE NOTICE: Do you have some VHS tapes that you would like to convert to DVDs? Contact Kathy Anderson (480-699-6342) to borrow the Club’s dub-bing machine. It is an easy

process, and all it takes is the time to play the tape so it can record to a new, blank DVD. Kathy has been converting the VHS tapes in the library to DVDs, so check some out to see how good it can be.

Whether you are a new beginner to computers or have years of experience, there is always something to learn at Computer Club. We meet Wednesdays at 10 AM in the Superstition Room. See you there.

The election results were as follows: Joe Couey – President, Mike Allen – Secretary, Mike Gordon – Director and Curt Walden – Director. The remaining board positions are: Cody Barnett – Vice President, Jerry Lovelady – Treasurer and Al Yost – Director.

The golfers who had hole-in-one shots during winter league play were Al Yost and Arnold Menning. They received trophies and a cash award for their achievement. Stretch Better - Play Better (In Sports And In Life!)

Dr. Wayne PhillipsAs your new ‘Trainer’ in the Fitness Center, I have talked to a lot of residents who love

playing sports. However they also told me they suffer a lot from minor injuries that interfere with or prevent them from playing: Strains, sprains, muscle stiffness, back pain, etc. Many felt that this was just a normal part of aging. It isn’t! What I discovered from my conversa-tions was that. . .

(1) Most players do not warm up at all or warm up effectively before their sport.(2) Most players do not stretch at all or stretch effectively before their sport.(3) All players want to stay injury-free.(4) All players want to improve their game.

To achieve (3) and (4) you have to do (1) and (2)!Some years ago, I was involved in a national campaign in England called “Sport for All.”

They had a great catchphrase which also applies to SSV:Get fit to play sports; don’t play sports to get fit!

“Get Fit” is really just another way of saying “Get Prepared.” Research tells us is that the best way to prepare for play is to stretch – not the actual muscles, but the ‘fascia’ that surrounds them and seamlessly ‘wraps’ the whole body. The stiffness and soreness you feel before, during or after exercise is probably fascia tightness. Learning to self-stretch fascia is easy, and you will find that it not only reduces everyday aches and pains but will reduce injury risk, increase mobility and improve your game! The most effective method of stretching fascia is called “Fascial Stretch Therapy™” (aka “The Stretch Wave™”). This is a revolutionary new technique that has been highly successful in reducing injury and improving performance with professional athletes. The Stretch Wave™ can be easily modified for non-professionals with similar beneficial results.

To learn more about Wave Stretching and how it can improve your ‘game’ – in life or in sports – contact Dr. Wayne Phillips (602) 793-0752 or [email protected].

Also see my flyer posted on the Fitness Center notice board.

Softball Spotlight

Linda “Scooter” Granzow, Coor-dinator of Team Promotion, SSV Softball Club

Welcome to May and an accelerated transition to warm weather. The SSV Softball Club now begins its period of semi-hiatus in winding down most scheduled activities for the season. We still want to remind our fans/supporters that the Softball Club continues

sales of soda pop and snacks at all Thursday evening Bingo games, beginning when Auditorium doors open around 5:30 PM and ending after intermission.

Proceeds raised for the Softball Club treasury are used toward Soft-ball Field upkeep and team(s) equip-ment, etc. Your generous assistance to make our varied fundraisers successful is greatly appreciated throughout the year!

The following slate of presid-ing officers were recently elected for the upcoming 2010-2011 season beginning next fall: President, Jerry Pointer; Vice President, John Davis; Secretary, Rich Hunt and Treasurer,

Bill Neely. Team managers for next year’s season are: Brian Hyde, Pos-se; Mary Boyack and Barb Pointer, Scorpions; Ron Allen, Bandits; Paul Hensley, Golden Oldies, and Al Yost, Coyotes.

Regular seasonal league play has wrapped up, but there may be intramural games organized for the “off-season” (check bulletin boards and Channel 22 for games slated for play here). Planned open practices for SSV residents/Softball Club members/authorized guests are held at 8 AM Saturdays at the Softball Field throughout the spring and summer.

The women’s team, the Scor-

pions, continues to actively recruit potential new team members. Any ladies who are current SSV resi-dents and who would like to play softball (or even just try their hand at it!) should contact Barb Pointer at 480-393-3814 for more information regarding next season‘s potential team line-up and ball-playing op-portunities in the winter 2010-2011 time frame.

We are publicizing our field usage policy for SSV residents/ho-meowners and their guests only (not applicable for organized teams not authorized/recognized by the SSV Softball Club). Residents who wish to reserve the Softball Field

for their personal use should call Rex Smith at 380-8544 for reservations. Reservations are available on a non-interference basis with existing teams’ play-ing schedules throughout the entire season.

Good wishes to all the travelers…we hope to see ev-erybody back, raring to go, next fall/winter!

SUN DUFFERS MIDNIGHT GOLFJackie Muller

‘By the light, by the light of the silvery moon, my honey and I, my honey and I, we want to play golf.’ What’s that, you say, golf? Yep, that’s right; 44 members of the Sun Duffers Tuesday golf group enjoyed a picture perfect evening golfing. After a BBQ dinner we teed off at 7 PM, just as evening was arriving. As the illuminated golf balls began rocketing through the air, the full moon peered over the Superstition Mountains. What a gorgeous site that was!

Initial reactions ran something like this: “I feel like the ground is moving and I can’t tell where I am going and we are probably crazy to be out here at this time of day.” This was followed by: “I think I am always going to golf at night. I do much better at hitting the ball in the dark.”

After the round, as we gathered together for dessert, we exchanged stories of those great shots we had and what a perfect night we had shared. This is all the more reason to begin planning for the third annual “Midnight Golf” next year.

Sunland Springs Village Voice May 2010 1

Sun American Mortgage, one of Arizona’s largest independent Mortgage Bankers is slicing its closing costs putting more money back into the hands of seniors. A reverse mortgage allows people who are 62 years old and older to convert their home equity into cash, without ever having to make another payment, and with no out of pocket expenses. Instead of the homeowner writing a check to the bank each month, the bank now pays the homeowner, who can elect to receive a lump sum, a line of credit or monthly payments. One of the biggest criticisms of reverse mortgages has been the fees, which before the new changes could have totaled up to 5% of a home’s value. But the

new cuts in fees mean that some homeowners can save $10,000 or more on the closing costs. Parker Turk, from Sun American mortgage related a recent reverse mortgage savings… “of course they could see the benefi t of the program, but were a little concerned with the closing costs. When they heard costs were being cut, they came back to see us here at Sun American Mortgage and wanted to give it one more try. By cutting the origination fee, and servicing fees, were able to cut their closing costs by over $13,000, which put that money directly back into their pocket.” The new changes, combined with recently increased lending limits allows more seniors than ever to qualify for this

program, making it worth looking into. Consumers should consider more than closing costs in deciding whether a reverse mortgage works for them. Finding a local businesses with a great reputation is also important. Sun American mortgage is a Farnsworth company and has been writing Reverse Mortgages in Arizona for over 20 years. In fact they wrote the fi rst reverse mortgage in Arizona.
