What has now become a much-anticipated

tradition, the May 2008 issue marks the sixth

year of AFM’s annual Swimsuit Edition. This

time around, we’ve devoted a dozen scintillating

pages to our famous feature, all shot within

Austin’s growing east side. It’s by far the most

expansive pictorial we’ve ever done, featuring

some of the hottest suits of the season.

We hope you enjoy it.

FRoM ThE PUBLIShERMAY 2008 m a g a z i n e

WIth the upcoMInG elections looming and

the rhetoric flying around universal healthcare, it’s hard for us to

figure out if any of the candidate’s programs will really work.

one thing I do believe in is the old adage: “an ounce of

prevention is worth a pound of cure.” now I don’t know if a 16

to 1 ratio is exactly right, but I do know that preventing disease

through healthy living has to be a better solution than treating

illness after the fact. Unfortunately, this is not always as easy as it

sounds because it requires a lot of personal commitment and is

sometimes difficult to stick to.

Well, there is one approach going on right here in Austin that promises to change all that

because of its innovative and fun approach. youth InterACTIVE (yI), a non-profit organization

based in Austin, is already affecting the lives of more than 50,000 Texas children through its

ACTIVE life initiative, with plans to expand across Texas and nationally.

That expansion will take an exponential leap forward with an innovative in-school and

at-home, family health and fitness program called “The ACTIVE life Challenge,” being piloted

this spring in the Austin Independent School district (AISd).

As a “celebration” of the successful completion of the Challenge, yI is launching its first

annual ACTIVE life Tour (AlT) event on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Toney

burger Center in Austin. The AlT-Austin event will celebrate the fun of being physically active,

making better choices in nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle.

In partnership with AISd, the AlT event will also be free to everyone. There will be high-

tech, active gaming equipment such as Gamebike, GamePad and Wii, as well as “old school” fun

such as awesome obstacle courses, Ultimate disc and the Austin Idol competition. There will be

healthy food and beverages, loads of free stuff and good, clean family fun with lots of laughs. If

you want more information about supporting or attending the event, visit activelifetour.com or

email nancy Germond, AlT Coordinator, at [email protected].

In speaking with youth InterACTIVE, I came away with several important ideas. first,

obesity and poor health are huge issues and we’ve not been successful in solving these problems.

Secondly, it takes tremendous energy — in fact, it takes a social movement — to make headway,

which is exactly what ACTIVE life is. And finally, our kids can help us by becoming healthy

change-agents; setting a new example and showing us that healthy lifestyles can be fun.

So, mark your calendar for May 17 and get ready for a fantastic time. The ACTIVE life

Tour event will be a chance for families and kids to have a great time while learning how much

fun a healthy lifestyle can really be. We’d love to have you and your family stop by to get a look

at what an ounce of prevention really looks like!

It’s noW understood that standard plastic water

bottles (stamped with a “1” on the bottom) and sturdier sport or

camping bottles (marked with a “7”) release small amounts of

chemicals into the water they encase; the question is whether

or not these chemicals are harmful. low levels of phthalates

— found in single-use bottles — seem to have passed

the test, but a consensus has yet to be

reached concerning the true nature

of bPA (bisphenol A) — an estrogen-

mimicking substance that leaches from

hard plastic. A few studies (some of which

were funded by plastics companies) say that we’re fine, but others

have shown that exposed animals were more likely to develop cancer.

A scary prospect considering how ubiquitous plastic has become in

our everyday lives.

not only is bPA found in some water bottles, it’s present in dental

sealants, baby bottles and canned food linings as well. due to its

widespread use most of us have traces of this chemical in our body

right now, so it’s clear this issue is about more than just whether

or not you should trade your nalgene for a Sigg.

In 2006 San francisco took steps to ban children’s

items containing bPA (the proposed law was never

implemented) and several other state legislatures

are examining the issue. Some retailers have

preemptively decided to stop selling baby

bottles that contain bPA and many consumers

are avoiding them just in case. on the flipside,

the European Union’s food Safety Authority has deemed this to be

much ado about nothing. There’s a lot of information muddying the

waters, so we’ll just have to stay tuned until it all becomes clear.

you thought you were doing the right thing for your health and for the environment by modifying your water-consuming ways, but it turns out that if you use and reuse plastic water bottles you may be ingesting more than you know. Here’s a closer look at the dangers plastic presents for ourselves and our young ones.

Spring haS definitely Sprung, and soon

Austin’s fittest women will be taking full advantage of the

balmy weather by leaping forward into tri season. Kicking off

a calendar of challenging events that includes the danskin

Triathlon in June, the Skeese Greets Women’s Triathlon

lets competitors ease into the racing state of mind by

participating in a 300-meter swim, 11.1-mile bike ride and

2-mile run. An attractive venue (the Texas Ski Ranch in new

braunfels), pre-race yoga and — it sounds cheesy but it’s

true — good vibes make this a can’t-miss event for beginners

and experienced athletes alike. “The first-time triathlete may

feel some trepidation when approaching the start line,” says

race director Stacy Keese, “but at an all women’s event the

supportive and friendly environment helps to calm some of

the nerves.” In addition to rewarding the top three finishers in

each age group, this second annual event includes door prizes,

a post-race party and a spectator-friendly set-up. Whether

warming up their skills for future races or proclaiming this

a pinnacle competitive accomplishment, the hard-working

women who make up this competition are bound to succeed;

through their athletic performances and by strengthening an

up-and-coming Austin fitness tradition.

lET’S GO fIshInGMaking heads or tails of fish consumption can be slippery business, so here’s a quick refresher course. Just a way

to help out when you find yourself wondering what you’re taking a bite of upon ordering that favorite fish filet.

MeRCURy MeteR

Low modERATE HiGH

This unpretentious dinner choice often appears fried in the Southern United States and

it’s a favorite in Indonesia and Europe as well. Some people snub it as flavorless but it

makes a healthy meal rich in Vitamin D, so add some Cajun spice and opt for wild over

farmed if possible (it’s leaner).

CatfIsh

LOW

Also available farmed or wild, trout can have a mild, earthy or nutty flavor depending on

its origin. A wild filet has more than 30 grams of protein and is packed with vitamins;

also, like other fish, trout is high in “good” cholesterol and therefore is considered a

“heart-healthy” food.

RaInbow tRout

LOW/MODERATE

With similar stats as its fellow fish in terms of cholesterol and vitamins, salmon is a

crowd favorite that’s suffered from some bad PR lately. Many people skip it for fear of

ingesting toxins and mercury, but when consumed in moderation it’s generally agreed

that it’s okay to eat salmon up to twice a week.

salmon

moDERatE

In a can, it’s a college student’s staple and it serves as a sushi standby, however

worrisome mercury levels have recently sent many fish-lovers packing while others

blithely continue ordering bluefin rolls. What to make from this sea of confusion? Even

experts disagree, so the smartest thing is to stay educated and diversify your diet.

tuna

MODERATE/HIGH

This sport fish appears less frequently on the dinner table than its cousins, but trendy

foodies willing to drop a few more bucks adore the meaty flesh of this elusive ocean

dweller. Too bad money can’t cancel out pollution; these guys are generally high in

mercury and pregnant women and children are advised to steer clear.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

technically it’S Simply a walk-up/drive-thru

newspaper and coffee stand, but visiting Emerald City Press

feels like glimpsing into the future. Sandwiched between peaceful

Shoal Creek and busy Lamar, this hybrid establishment offers

the laid-back vibes of a neighborhood cafe along with several

touches that will accommodate sophisticates on the go. With a

busy espresso machine at its heart, this new business succeeds

in encompassing the spirit of the city by offering an array of

Austin goods; menu items from Tacodeli, Upper Crust Bakery

and Cipollina have been procured for your convenience, and

many of the pre-packaged products (brownies, nuts, candy) are

of local origin. True to its worldly name, however, Emerald City

also displays an international flavor with an exotic selection of

newspapers and magazines for sale. As far as atmosphere goes,

the shady outdoor seating area is the perfect place to read the

Sunday Times or take a workday breather. But if you’re in a rush

you can pick up your chai, samosa or bouquet of fresh flowers

without getting out of the car. If you do decide to take a moment

or two away from your routine by sippng an almond milk latte,

snacking on a scone and catching up on the German stock

market at a quiet table out back, you may experience a passing

moment of not knowing quite where you are. Disorientation isn’t

always a bad thing, so consider letting Emerald City Press show

you what else is out there.

tasting; the point isn’t to party, it’s to drink a small amount

in order to “get the taste buds dancing,” says Scott. “The

combination…allows you to explore all your senses.” She even

includes Mary louise butters brownies at her gatherings,

qualifying these get togethers as true celebrations of life and

evolution. Held at vineyards, yoga studios or tailored to fit the

needs of an interested group, Scott’s “yoga+wine+chocolate”

experiences may not be by-the-book as far as the bhagavad

Gita is concerned, but they are meant to promote positivity

– something true yogis should find no problem with. “open

your mind,” encourages Scott. “It’s a big world out there

waiting to be discovered.”

wHAT A croc!Chic has nothing to do with it. A certain clunky-yet-ubiquitous brand of shoes has made it this far based on function and comfort

alone, and it looks like they hope to stay afloat with an expanding batch of styles. Watch out, because Crocs are out to get us all!

Nurses and chefs who want to unleash their inner Carrie Bradshaw might be interested

in these little numbers. This hybrid shoe offers a three-inch heel along with the traditional

comfort features of the classic Croc; who knew “circulation nubs” could be so almost-sexy?

The least Croc-y of them all, this style will please a stylish dude’s feet without killing his

street cred. Slip ‘em on for a boating trip or a pub crawl; unless you kick up your wasabi-

colored heels and let the label show, no one will know your dirty little secret.

This shoe aims high, as it’s intended to ease the troubles

that diabetics often encounter. Super soft foot pads, a

protective toe cap and — listen carefully — embedded

silver particles that create an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal

shoe-wearing experience which set these soles apart.

Everyone in the family can snag a pair of these virtuous

slip-ons, whose appeal lies in their eco-friendliness. Made

partly from recycled materials, purchasing a pair of these

normal looking Crocs also indebts the company to donate a

pair to the needy. Everyone’s a winner!

Designed for the smallest tootsies, these itty bitty shoes

mimic the feeling of being barefoot in order to minimize the

risk of toddler tumbles. With a weapon that’s breathable,

flexible and undeniably cute, Crocs knows how to capture

the young ones.

Show a little toe without giving up the confidence that goes

along with double-cushioned comfort and sand-friendly

“croslite” material. Available in an array of sassy two-toned

colors, these fancy flip-flops are destined to become the

must-have accessory for cruise ship frequenters.

Say what you will about traffic problems, a crane-cluttered skyline and things not being “how they used to be,” Austin

has much to offer if you know where to look. not every metropolis lets its residents escape to the wilderness without

leaving city limits, so take a hike already. Here are four of our favorite Austin trail spots, each along the beaten path.

Going south on Mopac from downtown

take the 360 north exit and stay on the

access road; stop before reaching the bridge

ahead (usually there are cars parked along-

side the road). The highways make it easy

to access the Greenbelt from wherever your

starting point may be without interfering

with the serene ambience of a mind-clearing adventure. before you

know it you’ll be trading traffic sounds for waterfalls.

Another doorway to the Greenbelt can

be found at the intersection of barton

Skyway and Mopac. A climbing wall lies

less than a mile down the trail if you turn

right, and runners and cyclists will find

the terrain they seek as well. Use care

when foot traffic is high and be sure to

observe the rules of the trail; keep dogs leashed and be respectful of

the 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew.

photos provided by Alex Thompson, Redbudisle.org, Susan Astray.

Though technically not on the Greenbelt,

this landmark is a must-visit for dog own-

ers. located at Town lake on Redbud Trail

near the lake Austin dam, a leash-free

area and a mini-loop will give people and

pets a trail-hiking experience without

making them venture too far off the grid.

Well-kept facilities (thanks to hard-working friends of the park) and

happy pups make this a fun place any day.

Perhaps barton Springs Pool is your

final destination, but also be aware that

just right of the pool building is a trail

entrance point. Head out for an instant

dose of peace and quiet; again, you’ll

marvel at the fact that even though you’re

practically downtown you’re surrounded

by lush greenery and breathing room. Hike for a couple miles and then

return for a refreshing dip – it’s a perfect Austin afternoon.
