Trip Report - Condamine Gorge - 3.10.2004At last after 3 years of procrastinating I had finally joined the Subaru Club onthe previous Monday and going on my first trip on the Sunday. It was a topday to go on a trip with great weather. I had my two children with me – Sam(11) and Lizzy(8) – so they had prepared sketch pads, books to read etc.

We all met at the little park just inside Boonah and by the time Dave gave usthe pre-trip talk and said ’s Goeaded off down the Boonah Rathdowney Roadfor a couple of kilometres and then turned off onto a dirt road to go along aridge line with some great views. First thing I noticed was that the Geolanderstended to slide on the gravel and with the kids in the car I had to slow down.Unfortunately being up near the front of the convoy I slowed everyone elsedown – Sorry Guys.

Eventually we got back onto the Boonah Rathdowney Road and did a smallbacktrack to get to Lake Maroon for Morning Tea.

While we had a small break and the kids could run amok in safety it wasnoticed that there was an unpleasant smell coming from underneath aBrumby and it was soon found that it was leaking fuel!! Well, this problemwas dealt with quickly and off we went on the next stage.

Again a little bit of backtracking to get us onto Burnett Creek Road and thenwe drove on dirt roads through some magnificent country. We crossed intoNSW and then back into Qld again and headed onto Condamine River Road.We did many easy creek crossings and stopped to do a group car photo andhave another break.

Once the break was over we kept going and did more fun creek crossingswith everybody ending up at Queen Mary Falls for lunch. The falls actuallyhad water going over it and was impressive how high those falls were.

After lunch we headed off to Lake Moogerah and again went through somemagnificent country.

5

Just before we got to Lake Moogerah, David’s XT had a flat tyre and everybodystopped to see how long it would take to change.

At Lake Moogerah we had afternoon tea and from here we went our separateways back home. The trip was a great day out and my kids actually enjoyedit as well. The Forester X performed well and it felt good to take it off thebitumen for awhile.

The only problem I had duringthe day was that when I was atLake Maroon I tried to open thecar door and it didn’t open, Ipressed the remote locking afew times, used the doorhandles and it still didn’t open.It was only when I stepped backto think about what washappening that I saw it wasn’tmy Forester.Ooooopppppsssss!!!!!!

Shane and Libby’s Subaru StoryLibby and I have had a few Subaru’s over the years. My love affair with theseawesome cars started when my dad bought a single range 1982 M.Y wagon. We went all over West Australia in it and from that moment on I wanted one.My first wagon was a bright yellow, 1982 dual range model. It came with theengine in the boot! I went to work on it first fixing the engine (it needed headgaskets) then I was on the road. A year later I got a lift kit and some 14”Peugeots wheels. The car lasted two years before the engine died. So I boughta 1980 wagon which had just had a reconditioned motor and gear box put in.I used them and the rest of the car for spares, which came in handy. Thewagon went well after that. I entered many gymkhanas and went on all sortsof 4x4 adventures until the body gave up. It was time for a new project I decidedto build a 4x4 M.Y. sedan. I used my old wagon as a donor car and bought a1982 G.L. 5 speed, front wheel drive Leone sedan. It cost me $1500.00 andwas in great condition. It had the G.L. dash with the taco and oil pressuregauges in the dash. I set about converting it to 4x4. It was a fairly simple job,as I used the engine that was in the sedan (it had low km’s). The rear end andduel range box came out of the wagon. At this stage I had heard about theSubaru 4x4 club and decided to join. After about a year in the club I decided Ineeded more power so got an EA81 turbo motor and put that in the Leone.Libby decided she wanted in on the Subaru action so we went out and got hera 1988 Brumby which we put a lift kit in and put some 14” wheels on. Thenshe got Suba Extreme front replacement bull bar and roll bars for the tray. Idecided on going and getting something newer so I bought a 1992 G.X. Liberty. It had power everything, and a sun roof which made a nice change from theM.Y’s. We pulled all the good gear out of the Leone and put it in the Brumby. Igave the Leone to Libby’s parents. We then later decided to sell the Brumbyand it was then the Liberty got written off in an accident. We were back todriving the Leone (as Libby’s parents kindly gave it back), so I restored it to itsformer glory with lift and 14” wheels and a twin carb motor. When we gotmoney for the Liberty I bought an RX Turbo. So, that’s what we have had todate, and if I have any say there will be many more to come.

Wanted: 2 used offroad tyres for my Liberty. They need to be 215/70-15 or205/75-15 in an all terrain or highway terrain tread. The tyres I have now area Dunlop A/T snow tyre which aren’t a very aggressive pattern, so somethingsimilar would be good. They don’t need to have a lot of tread left, as long asthey are evenly worn. I only put them on the car when I’m heading off-road. Ineed them to be close in diameter to the 215/70-15’s I currently have whichprobably only have 30% tread left.Contact Dane Allison on 0438870184
