The art of planting a treeA tree cannot be planted just anywhere. It must be chosen according to the area you live in, the quality of the soil and how much sun it will receive. Its size at maturity must also be taken into account so that it doesn’t take up too much space or block the view.

In the spring, trees are sold with roots bare of soil. To plant bare-root trees, all you have to do is dig a hole slightly big-ger than the root system or, even better, allow 15 cm extra in order to add more planting soil. This soil can be purchased or you can prepare it yourself by mixing black earth with peat moss or compost and bone meal.

As soon as their leaves open, trees are sold in fibre, plastic or wire containers in which the roots will form. Trees which are freshly potted usually come in fibre or wire pots. In order to avoid breaking up the root ball, do not remove a tree from this type of container.

If the tree is in a fibre pot, remove the bottom of the pot and make a few cuts in the sides before planting it. If you have chosen a tree with a root ball wrapped in burlap and enclosed in a wire basket, cut the wires on top and open up the burlap to two-thirds down the root ball. If the pot is made of plastic, there’s a good chance that the tree will have been in

this container for at least a season, if not longer. In this event the root ball has to be removed from the pot but, as the roots have had time to develop, there’s little risk of the ball breaking up. If you don’t take the root ball out of the pot the tree could become root bound. If this has already occurred, the roots will have to be carefully straightened out or pruned to prevent the tree from choking itself and eventually dying.

in the right spot.
