RCC’s ESTC Hosts Tactical Tracker School, Tactical Defense Academy

Randolph County and Asheboro City police offi-cers and National Guardsmen from as far away as Indiana benefited from some unique training op-portunities at Randolph Community College’s Emergency Services Training Center this week.             Twenty-four members of the Indiana Na-tional Guard were in Asheboro for two weeks to take part in Tactical Mantracking for Law En-forcement, Level I and Level II, training with Lawrence Wilkinson, president of the Tactical Tracker Training School in Angier, N.C. The Na-tional Guardsmen stayed in local hotels and ate at local restaurants, contributing to the economy, not-ed Paul Goins, RCC’s Basic Law Enforcement Training director and coordinator of continuing education criminal justice classes. “The county’s investment in this training facility is paying off,” he said. Goins said the training focuses on giving members of the armed forces, law enforcement, homeland security, and search/recovery personnel the skills and confidence to track in any terrain.             In addition, Asheboro Police Department officers, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office deputies and several other agencies took part in a Tactical Defense Academy at the ESTC using a 180-degree virtual shooting simulator. The simulator replicates real-life deadly force situations utilizing hundreds of different possible scenarios. Users wear a belt that “shocks” them if they sustain virtual wounds. Verbal interaction with the computer system can determine scenario outcomes.             The Tactical Defense Academy training is based in Hickory.

Squirrel In The Office !I told God I wish people would stop and look at our win-dow displays at the studio. Today I pulled up and people were lined up looking in. I thought WOW. You see as I approached, they all said we love your squirrel. God al-lowed a squirrel to enter the building and people flocked to watch. Let God build and guide your business - he has ways way beyond our thinking. Reminds me of these verses. James 4:13Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14How do you know what your life will be like to-morrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.!

Funeral Ser-vices, 11 a.m., Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Parks

Crossroads Christian Church, Ramseur. Officiat-ing, Rev. Randy Kelley, Rev. James Turner. Burial: Sunset Knoll Cemetery, Ramseur, with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. He was born March 27, 1920 in Randolph County to the late Walter and Dora Cox. As a boy, Elvin grew up working on the family farm. He often said he spent his youth on the "south end of a north bound mule." Elvin played sports as time allowed and was an accomplished baseball player in high school. He was married to his high school sweet-heart, Nettie Moody, until her death in 1993. Elvin was a WW II veteran serving in the US Army. He received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star in 1944 after being seriously wounded in Italy. Elvin worked at Bosong Hosiery until being named Ramseur Postmaster in 1959. He retired from the post office in 1989. He was an active member of the Ramseur First Christian Church for many years prior to rejoining the church of his child-hood, Parks Crossroads Christian Church. Elvin was a member of numerous civic organizations over the years, including the Lion's Club, Ameri-can Legion, and DAV. He was elected and served

as a Ramseur Town Commissioner for three terms. Many people will remember Elvin for his involve-ment in local youth baseball as a coach and league official for the better part of five decades. He began by coaching his oldest son in the 1950s and often said he would "retire" after his sons aged out of the program. Thirty years after his youngest played his last game, Elvin was still help-ing ensure Ramseur had a little league program. He only retired when age caught up with him in his 80s. After the death of their spouses, Elvin and Doris Simmons married in 1994. They loved to travel, garden, and spend time with their families. Elvin thought of Doris' sons and grandchildren as being his own, and they all loved going to visit "Grandpa Elvin." He is preceded in death by wife, Nettie Moody Cox, brother Howard Cox and sister Mary Ruth Cox. Survivors: wife, Doris Simmons Cox, sons, Terry Cox, and wife Judy, of High Point, Jeff Cox, of Shalimar, FL, Brian Cox, and wife Sharon, of Charlotte, step-sons, Richard Simmons, and wife Connie, of Richmond, VA, Brian Sim-mons, and wife Mary-Belle, of Staley, Andy Simmons, and wife Stacy, of New Bern, grandchildren, Jason Cox, and wife, Stephanie, of High Point, Kristin Rairden, and husband Matt, of Greensboro, seventeen step-grandchildren.
