TRANSCRIPT
In his classic Michtav M’Eliyohu, my grandfather, Rabbi Eliyahu E. Dessler zt”l, explains that
the observance of Jewish festivals is far more than a mere remembrance of the distant past.
Rather, one returns to the sanctity of the season which influences us today as in the past.
Contrary to human perception, time does not pass the individual. Rather, spiritually, the
individual journeys through time. As such, each year, as the festival of Shavuos approaches,
every Jew returns to the “station” of kabalas haTorah, the acceptance of the Torah at Sinai,
enabling him to relive the experience once again.
With the clarion declaration of the words naaseh (we will observe the Torah) and nishma
(we will listen to Hashem’s word), six hundred thousand ministering angels descended and
crowned each individual Jew with two crowns—one corresponding to each commitment.
The crowns represented a most worthy tribute to the Jewish people for their unwavering
commitment to Hashem and to the Torah, which is our blueprint for Jewish life.
Moreover, at that particular moment a Heavenly voice emanated and asked, “Who revealed
to My children the secret of the angels?” An angel, a strictly spiritual being, heeds Hashem’s
command unconditionally; and, like an angel, the Jewish people accepted to perform the
Divine commandments without qualification (Talmud Shabbos 88a). Thus, Klal Yisrael, the
Jewish Nation, attained an unprecedented level of strength and faith. Throughout the
generations, the historic statement of naaseh v’nishma has remained the enduring symbol
of Jewish dedication and belief. It represents the apex of our spiritual persona, and remains
our abiding aspiration even today.
But what makes the covenant so powerful is the fact that the declaration was avowed by
the entire Jewish nation k’ish echad b’lev echad—as one man with one heart. Our people
merited to accept the Torah as a nation, as one body, united by shared goals and common
beliefs. Indeed, achdus, Jewish unity was at its best. This, too, represents our spiritual
plateau and remains our aspiration even today.
Our sacred mission is to continue the legacy; to observe mitzvos, to study Torah and to
cherish it. But let us not continue the legacy alone. Just as the Torah was accepted by a
unified, collective Klal Yisrael, we might widen our umbrella and, under the banner of
Torah, embrace acheinu bnei Yisrael and lovingly guide them toward the truth, beauty and
joy of Torah.
As we rededicate our lives to those ideals, may we merit an abundance of blessings from
our Creator.
Have a wonderful Shabbos and a joyous Shavuos!

Before a capacity crowd of proud parents and grandparents, the fifth grade talmidim
celebrated their siyum on all of Sefer Shemos this past Sunday morning. The boys actually
began learning Shemos in fourth grade and continued to learn and complete it recently
this year. After divrei bracha from Rabbi Dessler and Rabbi Newman, the boys each
presented a brief dvar Torah from all of the parshios in Sefer Shemos. Everyone was
invited to the lunchroom for refreshments. This was followed by a fleishig siyum for the
boys and their Rebbeim. Special thanks to the dedicated fifth grade rebbeim: Rabbi Elias,
Rabbi Klein and Rabbi Mann for all of their mesiras nefesh and love of
learning which they instill in their talmidim each day. We look forward to
many more siyumim and accomplishments which we can all be proud of!
Mazal tov to fourth grader, Meir Rokowsky who made a siyum this week
in his classroom on Meseches Beiah. Mazal tov also to Rabbi Drazin’s
fourth grade on completing Parshas Yisro. The boys had a two day siyum
which consisted of slurpees (sponsored by the Farkas family), a pizza
lunch at Kinneret (sponsored by the Shawel family) and ice cream
(sponsored by the Schlesinger family). What an especially enjoyable way
to celebrate such a wonderful accomplishment!

The Oakwood Campus was quite busy this past week!
Last Thursday, we had the tremendous kavod to hear from Rabbi Dovid Shustal, shlita,
Rosh Yeshiva, Beth Medrash Govoha, Lakewood, New Jersey. The boys all gathered in the
beis medrash, were inspired by the divrei chizuk, and had the opportunity to personally
greet the Rosh Yeshiva.
On Sunday, all the boys who completed level three of the Pesach program gathered at Rabbi and Mrs. Kahn's home for a
deluxe barbecue!!
On Monday, we got a better understanding of the saying "when it rains it pours". We
were zocheh to three simchos; the bar mitzvah of Meir Malcmacher, the bar mitzvah of
Ari Bernstein, and we hosted the Jacobs bris. The feeling of simcha was evident
throughout.
On Tuesday, Ezra Pollack made a siyum on Seder Moed which he learned with Rabbi
Ahron Lipa Mann during the past four years. Everyone was treated to a deluxe breakfast
and heard words of inspiration from Rabbi Kahn and Rabbi Mann. Mazel tov!

This past Shabbos, Yavne High school students and staff spent an uplifting
Shabbaton together at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Beachwood. This year's
Shabbaton was devoted to the topic of hakaras hatov - the "Attitude of
Gratitude". Based on the words of our matriarch, Leah - "Hapaam Odeh es
Hashem", the theme of the weekend, our girls explored the meaning of
gratitude through divrei Torah (presented by both staff and students),
workshops, song-dance and choir. Our keynote speaker was Mrs. Fally Klein
of New York, noted author, who led us on a "Miracle Ride" filled with both
laughter and depth as she shared her experiences as a teen diagnosed with lymphoma. Her life-altering decision to
exchange "kvetching" for gratitude, inspired us all. A new feature this year was a student panel where talmidos shared
their own insights and thoughts. Shabbos morning was especially meaningful for our tenth graders, who heard the
haftara they had just finished learning with their morah, Mrs. S. Klahr. A spirited Pirkei Avos game and heartfelt singing at
seuda shlishis brought the event to a beautiful conclusion as the girls heard a parting message from Mrs. Klein. Rabbi
Simcha Dessler and his wife joined Yavne for the Shabbos. Rabbi Dessler shared with the girls three meaningful vignettes
on the theme. Our most sincere hakaras hatov to Shabbaton coordinators, Mrs. Reva Roffman and Mrs. Shani Kohn,
Menaheles Kohn and the Yavne Shabbaton heads, committee
heads and all students who contributed time, effort, and talent to
create such a special Shabbos. Delicious food, gorgeous
centerpieces and original kits, all combined to produce this
memorable experience. Thanks to one and all.
Yavne Seniors volunteered one afternoon at the Jewish Federation
to pack emergency backpacks that will be placed in all the Jewish
schools in Cleveland. B'ezras Hashem, we will never have to use the
backpacks, but thanks to the Jewish Federation and the Yavne
seniors, the Jewish schools will be ready in an emergency.
The girls have been very busy preparing for Shavuos. They have been
learning the halachos, minhagim and the story of Megillas Rus. Mrs.
Chavi Matitia has helped all of our classes
make beautiful art projects to grace their
Shavuos tables. Miss Rennert made stained
glass flower cookies with her classes to
enhance our yom tov.
Mrs. Ribiat’s class gave out a treat in honor of chodesh Sivan. They made adorable, mini
sifrei Torah out of “winkies”.

Invention Convention
Our second annual
Sixth Grade Invention
Convention was held
last week with much
success b"H! Our
student inventors
and entrepreneurs
were well prepared.
They had spent four
weeks learning
about the process of
inventing: noticing a
problem, thinking of
possible solutions,
narrowing it down to
the one solution they think will best solve the problem,
learning about Intellectual Property from local patent
attorney, Mr. Warren Sklar, keeping a journal, planning and
designing an invention, creating a prototype, getting
feedback, making revisions, and preparing an "elevator
pitch" to share with the judges.
Our students did an outstanding job! They were creative,
innovative and thorough as they set out to find simple
solutions to everyday problems. They did a wonderful job
presenting their ideas and their prototypes to students,
adults, and judges alike. Many of our visitors wished that
some of these inventions were already on the market as
they found them to be useful solutions for daily challenges!
Our judges were so overwhelmed by the quantity of quality
inventions and presentation that they had a very hard time
choosing winners. After several hours of deliberations, they
selected a number of students to be recipients of the
winning prizes, but they concluded that everyone was a
winner based on how much effort they'd put in and how
much they had learned!
Our Girls winners are:
1st place: Sari Koval - The Smart Scanner
2nd place: Elisheva Chafetz - The Cupper Upper
2nd place: Sari Kohn - Expandages
3rd place: Malka Koval - The Popkernel Strainer

Our Boys winners are:
1st place: Binyomin Feuer - Wirelist Charger
2nd place: Yehuda Zev Goldbaum - Inflatable Garbage Bag
2nd place: Ahron Zelig Silverberg - Pump Milk
3rd place: Yaakov Bookman - Bagsholder 2000

time and expertise to really listen to our students and encourage them to keep honing their critical thinking and
creative problem solving skills. We are certain that all the skills and confidence our students gained from this program
will serve them well in all their future endeavors. And who knows?!? Maybe one day we
will actually be able to buy one of their products in the store!
Thank you, Teachers!
Teacher Appreciation Day offered a cool scoop of Ice Cream for our amazing teachers.
Thank you for your efforts and investments in our future!
3rd Grade Economics Unit: The sweet success of hard work
The 3rd graders in Mrs. Geberer's and Mrs. Geraci's classes are deep in the trenches of
economics. This Project Based Learning unit was created by Mrs. Geraci who is on our
Curriculum Development team. The students are studying the Economic/Social Studies curriculum within a literature-
based book study, The Lemonade War. While delving into the story, that portrays young siblings who create their own
business, the students analyzed what it means to create and manage a business. Shannon Road Ice Cream (SRIC)
presented a real life entrepreneurship opportunity which turned a basement-based ice cream shop into a Cleveland
favorite! Miss Sarah Dadusc shared the story of how her family first started making ice cream, the trials and
tribulations of having a home business, and how SRIC has flourished into a city-wide business that also ships
nationwide! Of course, to prove that the ice cream is as good as it sounds, SRIC brought in samples for all of the young
entrepreneurs in the audience. SRIC is a goods-based business, and the classes also heard from service-based
businesses.
We would like to thank Shannon Road Ice Cream for taking the time and sharing their delicious product with our 3rd
graders! If you would like to taste the sweet ice cream yourself, you can pick up delicious varieties at Ungers, Tibors,
Boris, or Heinen’s. Special orders are available by calling call 216-285-0720. Thank you to Mrs. Geraci and Mrs. Geberer
for sparking the interests and providing authentic learning for our future entrepreneurs of tomorrow!
We would also like to thank our speakers who own their own businesses that offer services. Mrs. Aliza Feldman spoke
to the 3rd grade boys about her business, Advanced Therapy Solutions, which specializes in Occupational, Speech, and
Physical therapy. For more information on Mrs. Feldman’s services you can visit http://
www.advancedtherapycle.com/. Mrs Essie Neuman spoke to our 3rd grade girls about her home daycare business, a
must have in our growing neighborhoods!
Ending this economics unit, the students will create their own business`ses and share what they have learned, and
developed, during an end of year Market Day.

Shavuos has arrived with lots of colorful flowers and Torahs and happy children.
Morah Chana and Morah Tova Chaya’s children learned that the Torah was given on
Har Sinai and the children measured, poured, and mixed ingredients to make
cupcakes. These cupcakes were special because they were Har Sinai cupcakes
decorated by the children with sprinkles and a Torah on top. The children also
worked hard making a beautiful home for the Torah, an aron Kodesh.
Morah Chana Ora and Morah Chaya’s children were very busy this week. For
Shavuos they made a beautiful lollipop flower bouquet and they also made
wonderful centerpieces, flowerpots with the children’s pictures on them. What
could be more special than flowers and children! But this is certainly not all they
did. They learned about a new shape, a triangle, that has three sides. To reinforce this triangle concept, they made pizza
because each slice is a triangle. Yum!
Our fathers are going to be surprised when the Shavuos bag filled with the children’s creations arrives at home. Aside
from the colorful table and wall decorations, the Abbas are receiving some very special presents, made by the children
with lots of effort and love. Morah Bluma and Morah Smadar’s children made their fathers a “stay up cup for coffee” that
they can use on Shavuos night to help them remain awake to learn Torah. Some of the three year olds made bookmarks
in the shape of a watch to help their Abbas keep the place when they are learning Torah. We love our Mommies and
Abbas and love making presents for them.
The K’tan-tan classes for next year are almost full. If you have not yet sent in your
registration packet, please do so right after yom tov.
There is no school tomorrow, Friday, and Monday. Tuesday morning we will begin at
9:30 in the children’s regular classrooms.
We wish everyone a good Shabbos and yom tov and may the excitement that we
experienced at Har Sinai when we first received the Torah remain with us and never
lessen. Shep nachas from your children, what they learned about Shavuos and Megilas
Rus, and what they made with their very own little hands to enhance your yom tov!
Volunteers Needed
We are looking for volunteers for the Fun Run Sunday, June 3. We need help with set up at 11:00 am, during the event
1:00-4:00 and clean up after 4:00.
We are also looking for volunteers for a Girls Field Day on June 19th from 12:30-3:00. We need 8-10 volunteers to help
with setting up activities, instructed by the gym coach and helping to run the activities such as jump ropes, relays, and
