GOD SAID NO…

I asked God to take away my pain. God said, No.

It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole. God said, No.

Her spirit was whole, her body was only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience. God said, No.

Patience is a by-product of tribulations; it isn't granted, it is earned.

I asked God to give me happiness. God said, No.

I give you blessings. Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me pain. God said, No.

Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow. God said, No.

You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life. God said, No.

I will give you life so that you may enjoy all things.

I asked God to help me LOVE others, as much as he loves me. God said... Ahhhh, finally you have the right idea.

In Christ’s Love, Deacon Bob Seidler Administrator Pro Tempore

FAITH FORMATION

Dearest Saint Kateri Family, As soon as you are able to join us back inside the church for Mass, please do! Your presence will add to our joy! And, wait until you are part of the new way of sharing the sign of peace! It has given us a reason to cast our eyes over everyone in the church nodding, waving, sending peace signs, all while bursting with joy from just getting to worship together again… even if we can’t recognize each other with our masks on!

As we move more towards the end of this incredibly difficult year and a half, we are planning some powerful ways to celebrate our family reunion with WELCOME BACK events. Throughout the summer watch for these monthly, multi-generational get togethers. Dates and types of events will be determined by where we are in the easing of restrictions caused by the pandemic. We want everyone in our parish community to feel comfortable and be able to enjoy the fun. And, we want you to feel good about inviting your friends. I bet there a lot of people you know who, during their own difficult journey, yearned for Jesus and a faith community like yours. Let’s get this party started!

Have you heard about SPIRITS RESTORED? We are planning on a great turn out for this powerful evening of spirit-filled music, prayer and inspiring talks. I don’t know about you, but after this past year or so, I could use some extra spirit-lifting from the Holy Spirit. Let’s move into the next tier of our pandemic journey with hearts on fire for God. See you Sunday, May 23 at 5:30 in the church at SPIRITS RESTORED. Your Sister in Christ, Molly McCarthy

Studying the faith through the wisdom and perspective of women. A new Endow small group study started April 15, meeting at 7:00 pm on Thursday evenings on Zoom. For more information and/or to sign up contact: [email protected] and she will get you in touch with Linda, our group leader.

“ENDOW has made a lasting impact on my journey back to Christ. I cannot wait for it to continue to mature my

intellectual roots in the faith, to be able to confidently take it out into the world. So thankful for the Endow women and

all they are doing to share the Gospel and empower Catholic women.”

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? CURIOUS ABOUT CATHOLICISM?

Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Or do you know someone who has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Are you a baptized Catholic who never celebrated the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation?

We have a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) to accompany you on this faith journey! Come and see more about becoming a Catholic.

GOSPEL READING Mark 16:15-20

Jesus is taken to heaven, and the disciples go forth to

preach as Jesus commanded

It can be very important whom we sit next to. Any family that has tried to sit down to a family dinner or packed the car for a trip has heard children argue at least once about who should sit where. To sit next to someone, especially if that person is important, is to have a place of honor. Jesus has this place of honor seated at God’s right hand, but there’s more to this metaphor than where Jesus sits in relation to God. To be in the place of honor is also to be in a place of power. Knowing people in powerful places can be helpful. Our children remind us of this each time we are called upon to referee a conflict. Jesus, honored at God’s right hand, is a powerful ally for us. As you gather as a family, recall a time when there was a discussion, or perhaps even an argument, about where people were going to sit. Talk about why it might be Important to a person to sit in a particular place. Observe that in today’s Gospel we will learn about Jesus’ place in heaven. Read together today’s Gospel, Mark 16:15-20. Talk about what we might learn about the relationship between God and Jesus from today’s Gospel and what we learn about Jesus’ relationship to us. Observe that one of the things we learn is that Jesus continues to help us from this place of honor in heaven. Pray together the Apostles’ Creed. https://www.loyolapress.com/catholic-resources/liturgical-year/sunday-connection/ascension-of-the-lord-

YOUTH MINISTRY

Life Teen message from Kelly Dunnahoo

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. This is where we recall Jesus going up to Heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father. He had accomplished what He had come to do and it was time to leave the Apostles and the earliest Christians to carry on His mission – preaching salvation to the entire world. The actual event of the Ascension is recorded in today’s First Reading, taken from the beginning of the Acts of the Apostles. But wait – this reading tells us that the Ascension happened 40 days after Jesus’ Resurrection - why are we celebrating it today? Well, historically it had been celebrated on Ascension Thursday, but in recent times the Bishops have moved the feast day to the following Sunday. They recognized the importance and sacredness of this particular Feast Day and, realizing that proper celebration might be difficult on Thursday for some people, moved it to a time where it can be properly appreciated.

Certainly, the Ascension was a very important event during the birth of Christianity. However, put yourself in the Apostles’ shoes for a minute. It must have been very baffling. They had already lost Jesus (or so they thought) one time during the Crucifixion. Amazingly, Jesus rose from the dead and they understood they had not lost their friend. Now, only 40 days later, after they finally started figuring how who He truly was, Was he really going to leave them again? It’s hard to imagine the confusion at first – but then their consolation came when “two men in white garments” told them that Jesus would come back again.

Still, it must have been very hard for them when Jesus left. All of a sudden their friend (and their God!) seemed far away. And so it can be with us. Have you ever felt that God is just too far away, that He doesn’t listen, that He doesn’t care? How do we even know that God hears our prayers – I mean after all, they aren’t always answered the way we want them to be. Honestly, it all boils down to faith and that can be hard. Faith is a gift given to us by God at our baptism. Hopefully, as we grow older, we nurture that gift and grow our faith, but events in our lives can challenge that faith, even make us question it. If any of this has happened to you – and don’t worry, it is actually a normal occurrence in our faith journey – don’t shrug it off. Your faith is such an incredible gift and to lose it would be devastating. Every day, say a prayer to God asking Him to help you with your faith. Every single day. After a while, you will be amazed at the change in your faith life. Be like the man who begged Jesus to help him believe more deeply in Him. (Mark 9:24)

Life Teen is a community for teenagers where we help each other, through support and prayer, to be intentional disciples and lead others to Christ. Unfortunately, we are not able to meet weekly during the pandemic, but we will be meeting on the Plaza on the second Saturday of each month, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, for the time being. In addition, the adult volunteers remain committed to supporting our teenagers whenever possible. If you would like to pray with two of the adult volunteers, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will set up a Zoom meeting for you.

Registration for Level 1 and Level 2 Confirmation will begin toward the end of May.

Please watch the bulletin for further information and updates.
